A new research report has shown that the likelihood of distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks on businesses has increased over the past few months.

Arbor Networks collected data from all over the world to create a new Atlas Threat Portal, including information on security events, vulnerability disclosures and the propagation of worms.

The company found that there are at least 2,500 DDoS attacks worldwide each day, which seem to be increasing in both size and complexity.

The aim of a DDoS attack is to deliberately overload servers in order to slow them down or crash them completely.

Cyber criminals and even company competitors are increasingly using them maliciously to cause chaos in various different sectors, particularly when it may not be possible to steal data.

Even in the short time since the start of this year, the average scale of such an incident went up by 43 per cent, with almost half now measuring over 1Gbps.

Larger-scale occurrences also appear to be on the rise, as attacks between 2Gbps and 10Gbps doubled in frequency and 41.6 per cent more measured in excess of 10Gbps.

"This portal allows us to share global threat information with the community at large, to feature our team of expert analysts, highlight their research and integrate the latest news and social activity that is going on across the industry," commented spokesperson for Arbor Networks Dan Holden.

It follows a recent poll by Neustar, which discovered that 22 per cent of businesses located in Britain experienced a disruptive attack on their IT infrastructure during 2012, 37 per cent of which lasted at least a day.

Despite this being a relatively large figure, over 20 per cent of those polled said they do not have protective measures against DDoS in place.

Security analyst Jeff Wilson said: "Good, old-fashioned pointless mischief and mayhem is being driven by the easy availability of bots/botnets for hire and easily distributed crowd-sourced attack tools."
