South Capitol Street Improvements

At an estimated total cost of $908 million over the next 10 years, the South Capitol Street Project will be the largest in DDOTs history.

To help best manage costs and minimize construction impacts, we have divided the project into in two phases.

The second phase will be advance as the first phase concludes and funding becomes available.

The new bridge will be built just south but adjacent to the existing on.15Traffic Oval West of Bridge

West OvalPotomac Avenue, SENew Frederick Douglass Memorial BridgeHalf Street, SWQ Street, SWR Street, SWPotomac Avenue, SWSouth Capitol StreetNationals BallparkThe west oval will be 250 feet wide by 500 feet long with signalized intersections.

It will restore the vision of the LEnfant plan for the street configurations in this area and also directly reconnect R and Q Street to South Capitol Street

The design provides future memorial space and recreational the green space but also incorporates key elements of the projects storm water management system.

The oval also is an important part of the projects multi-modal accessibility improvements and will provide excellent connectivity with the bridges separated bicycle and pedestrian paths. 16New Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge

The new Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge will provide 18 feet of multi use space on each side of the bridge -- two 10-feet wide paths for bikes and two 8-feet wide paths for pedestrians compared to the current roughly 5-feet wide shared paths on each side of the bridge.

The bridge also includes 4 belvederes, two on each side, that will extend about 12 feet out from the bridge and be 40-feet long,

There will be 3 motor vehicle lanes in each direction compared to the current total of five.

You also can see the bicycle and pedestrian connections both into the park, as well as to Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, South Capitol Street and Howard Road.

Another major segment of the project shown here is also the reconstructed Interstate 295/Suitland Parkway Interchange, which will allow the closure of the current Howard Road Exit off 295. 19Phase 1 Project Schedule(Segments 1 and 2)Statement Of Qualifications ReceivedAugust 1, 2013Notification of Short ListJanuary 31, 2014Issue Request for Proposals 1st Quarter 2014Receive Technical Proposals 3rd Quarter 2014Select Design-Build Team4th Quarter 2014Notice to Proceed1st Quarter 2015Final Completion 4th Quarter 201820Short-Listed Teams Major ParticipantsFrederick Douglass Bridge PartnersTutor Perini/T.Y.
