John 3:16-18
“For God so loved the
world that he gave his
one and only Son, that
whoever believes in
him shall not perish but
have eternal life. For
God did not send his
Son into the world to
condemn the world, but
to save the world
through him. Whoever
believes in him is not condemned, but whoever
does not believe stands condemned already
because he has not believed in the name of
God’s one and only Son.”
How do you explain the meaning of Christmas
in just a few words? Well the best way I know is
this:“For God so loved the world that he gave
his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth
in him should not perish, but have everlasting
life.” Amen!
No one could outdo what God has done.
No one could give a greater gift than God
has already given. I would like for us to
consider the meaning of Christmas this week-
what it should mean to each and every one of
us today.
Christmas means a lot of things to a lot
of different people. To some it is-a
time of shopping and spending a time
of drinking and carousing; a time of traveling
and entertaining but, what is the real meaning
of Christmas? What message should it convey
to every one of us?
To me, Christmas is;
A TIME OF REMEMBERING.
Remembering the great love that God had for
each and every one of us. He loved us so
much that He spared not His only Son that we
might be saved. Remembering the uniqueness
of His life, His teachings, His miracles, His
prophesies, His death, His resurrection,
remembering all those humble but great peo-
ple surrounding the Christmas story people
like Joseph and Mary, Zacharias and
Elizabeth, Anna, Simeon, the shepherds, the
wise men, and etc.
A TIME OF LOVING
People make a special effort to be a little
kinder, a little more considerate of others, and
a little more generous during the Christmas
season. They get involved in such things as
Christmas caroling, toys for the needy, for the
misfortunate, etc. It is a time for reaching out
to others with love and concern. God so loved
the world-let us never forget that!!! In all of
our preaching, teaching, evangelizing, etc. let
us always remember that the motivation for all
this is the love of God for lost sinners. He
really cares about us. So should we care as He
cares? So should we love, as He loves?
. A TIME OF GIVING
For God so loved the world that He gave.
Love cannot look with indifference on the
hungry, and the sick, and the lonely, lost souls
of this world. Love must give. God gave all
He could give. He gave His only begotten
Son. This gift was freely given, lovingly
given, graciously given to all of us, who were
undeserving sinners.
Christ shared our human nature that we
might receive His divine nature. Day by day,
those who receive Him are being transformed
into His image, until we all come into the full-
stature of the perfected children of God,
washed in the blood of the Lamb.
A TIME OF FORGIVING
God was willing to forgive us. He was willing
to show mercy to a sinful, lost, and dying
world. Do we possess His forgiving spirit? Or,
is your spirit a judgmental one that looks
down upon others? Is there someone you need
to forgive today?
. A TIME OF RESCUING
God rescued us by His love and mercy. He
saved us from perishing. Without Christ we
are without life, and headed for an eternity
without God-forever separated from the God
who made us and longs to save us.
He wants us to inherit eternal life. We are all
descendents of a dying race. But
for the grace of God, we would all likewise
perish.
A TIME OF CHANGING
The Christ of Christmas changes us. He makes
us new creatures. All things become new
forus. We have new goals, new ideas, new
direction, and new hope. Christ changes peo-
ple for the better.
A TIME OF REJOICING
Rejoicing in God’s unmerited grace; Rejoicing
in the release of forgiveness; Rejoicing in a
new life with a new mission.
I have tried to share with you this week what
Christmas means to me. What does the com-
ing of Christ into this world mean to you?
Have you received Him as Lord and Savior?
If not, I encourage you to come to Him now.
Now you know what Christmas should be.
Amen!

Mini Christmas Tree Pizzas
By: Bettye “Katt” WilliamsELITE NEWS STAFF WRITER
Now you have read my Thanksgiving storyabout how thankful I was of my life andhow I spent many Thanksgivings alone,
but after all that loneliness, Christmas is my sea-son to give to others and just feel the spirit ofChristmas throughout the world. No matter if Iend up spending Christmas alone, I never feelalone as I do other holidays.
To me, Christmas is the only holiday that canlift my spirits and make me feel happy becausenot only do I get the joy of seeing how Christmasaffects not only children but others who receiveChristmas. Just knowing there was a birth of aman name Jesus. Jesus was God’s manifestationof love. “For God so loved the world.” (John3:16). We often say to people that God lovesyou....and this is the proof. It does not say Godloved a few special people, or just those whobelieve in Him, but He loved the whole world. That includes everyone here, in this nation andaround the world, and with knowing that, I knowHe loves me.
Christmas is my time of the year to feel loved. Not for gifts that I may or may not get, but forlove I feel down inside for myself. God remindsme in my heart I am loved.
When my children were born, my face wouldlight up to see their face on Christmas morning, then years later, to see my grandson’s face lightup the same way my children did when they wereyounger. Regardless of whether it was my kids,my grandson, or other family and friends react togifts and gatherings; each of those momentsreminded me I was loved as well.
Christmas has a soft spot in my heart each year, whether I was broke as a door nail and couldn’tgive gifts like I would want to my family andfriends or if I had worked some extra hours atwork to give to others to see them smile, I knewChristmas would make me feel a lot better aboutmyself and feel a joy in my heart that can’t betaken away by anyone.
Christmas seasons in my youth were spent inMansfield, TX at my childhood church (Mt. OliveBaptist Church-Arlington, TX). Christmas wascelebrated during Sunday morning services, atSunday School Christmas programs where Iwould offer recitations with the youth of thechurch and in celebrations by church choirs andauxiliaries. Church was instrumental in fosteringa healthy spiritual perspective on the holiday.
There was no question in our house or in ourchurch that Jesus was the reason for the season.
On Christmas Day, my foster parents wouldawaken me at pre-dawn so that we could see whatSanta brought under the tree. I had to makeChristmas breakfast: homemade biscuits, freshlyground sausage and eggs from the farm. Yes, Iwas a farm girl! After eating our fill Christmasmorning, it was time to get dressed for Christmasvisits with other relatives, friends, aunts, uncles, cousins, much food, and an annual viewing of myDVD of “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch StoleChristmas,” perhaps my favorite holiday fable. My grandmother, who was affectionately called“Big Mama,” who left me in 1987, would be inthe kitchen, making it her Christmas mission toprovide everyone their favorite dish. As she and Igrew older, I tried to gently dissuade her fromcooking my favorite dish so that she could restand enjoy Christmas. Whenever I decide to cooklike Big Mama, it always made it feel likeChristmas.
For some African Americans, Christmas startson December 26th with the harvest time ritualknown as Kwanzaa. The holiday originated in the1960s, during the civil rights movement to com-memorate African heritage of African Americanswho use Swahili language. It lasts for a week. There are family gatherings, gifts are exchangedand a series of black, red and green candles are litto symbolize the seven basic values defined forthe African Americans family life - Collectivework and responsibility, Cooperative Economics,Creativity, Faith, Purpose, Self-determination,and Unity.
By now you can tell that Christmas is myHoliday of choice, it’s my time to feel loved, it’s
my time to give, rather than to receive, and it’smy time to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Onthis and every Christmas we celebrate the birthof the Savior. And, in that birth, we celebrateGod’s presence with us -past, present, andfuture. Merry Christmas from the Elite NewsStaff; Jordan, Bill, Bettye, BJ, Tyrone, andCharles.
My Version of “The Hood Christmas Story”A sister named Mary was to be married to a
brother whose name was Joseph. It was Joseph, you see, who was a descendant of Abraham. Itturned out that Mary was already pregnant, andJoseph wasn’t happy about it—especially sincethe child wasn’t his.But Joseph was a pretty cool brother. Although
he coulda dissed the sister big time and had hersent away, he decided that Mary was an all rightsister (although she did have a big problem). For her sake, he decided that he wasn’t gonnatell everybody her business. So while he sat and thought about how he
would send Mary away without everybodyknowin what was happenin’, an angel of theAlmighty stood before him. “Brother Man, don’tdo this thing you’re thinking. Believe me when Itell you, the kid Mary is carrying is a holy kid.Just like a brother named Isaiah said a long timeago, ‘A virgin will get pregnant, though not byany brother, and when the kid is born his nameshall be called Immanuel,’ which is the name ofthe Almighty Hisself!”And Joseph went, “That’s pretty hip.” Without
another word, he married the sister, Mary, andwhen the kid was born they called the littlebrother Jesus.

“The King ofChristmas”
This is a very spe-cial time of year, which has a spe-
cial kind of meaning toall mankind, or should I say it should be avery special time of year for all mankind. This time of year represents the embryon-ic stage of mankind’s redemption. Manwas lost in sin and had no way of everbeing redeemed, unless there was theshedding of blood, and the blood had to beworthy. For this reason Christmas is morethan gold or glitter, it is more than theexchange and giving gifts. It is a season ofthe year when we should be thankful andgrateful that we have a Savior who wasborn around this time of year who cameinto the world just at the right time to saveus from our sins.
Everybody gets all in the air aroundChristmas time, not because of the mean-ing of Christmas, but because of all thewine and dine atmosphere which sur-rounds Christmas. We have even allowedthe meaning of Christmas to be discon-tinued in our public schools. The wordChristmas is not to be attached to certainfunctions within the schools, because ofthe first part of the meaning of the wordCHRIST. We are allowing to happenmentally what happened mentally andphysically two thousand years ago.
We need to teach our children that thereis more to Christmas than toys, newclothes, wining and dining, and fun andgames. “And she shall bring forth a son,and thou shalt call His name Jesus: for Heshall save His people from their sins.”Now all that was done, that it might befulfilled which was spoken of the Lord bythe prophet, saying “behold a virgin shallbe with child, and shall bring forth a son,
and they shall call His name IMMANU-AL, which being interpreted as, GODWITH US”. (Matt.. 1:21,22 and 23)
The name of the child Jesus in Hebrew“YEHOSHUA” means, “JEHOVAHSAVES.” This within itself proves thevery purpose of Christ’s coming into theworld to save sinners. This statementbecomes the foundational concept of theGOSPEL. Jesus by His very name andnature, is the Savior. The statement,“Thatit might be fulfilled”. This phrase is aGreek phrase, (PLEROO) which indicatedthe inevitability of the fulfillment of thewords of the prophet.
If we look at the logic of this Scripture;it should make us want to cry. God lovedus so, that He started making preparationto redeem man the same time He madeHim. Isn’t that something? How manymen would marry a woman for sure thatshe would be unfaithful to him?
“There is no greater love that layingdown your life that others might live.”This is why the man Jesus was bornKING, and when we think aboutChristmas let us not forget why we haveChrist in the first place. If you are able toread this article and you do not know whoJesus really is, then you should lift upyour eyes to Heaven right now, and say Isurrender my life to you right now, because Jesus is truly “ THE KING OFCHRISTMAS”.
TO ALL OF OUR BROTHERSAND SISTERS IN CHRIST, WEWISH YOU A VERY MERRYCHRISTMAS, AND A HAPPYAND PROSPEROUS NEWYEAR, AND MAY GOD BLESSYOU REAL GOOD, AND MAYHE EVER KEEP YOU IN HISLOVING CARE.

Dear Dr. Hollie,
My best friend’s sonstole an MP3 playerfrom me. It’s not a
very expensive one or any-thing. I don’t know how to goabout telling his mother. Iknow we are going to have afall out, even though I know Ican prove that it belongs tome. I am very close to my best friend’sfamily as well, so I know them. Thisparticular son can do no wrong in any oftheir eyes. No matter what kind of trou-ble he gets into or causes, they have anexcuse or a reason as to why he did it.And all is supposed to be forgiven by allinvolved. I’ve never been on the receiv-ing end of his troubles though. My hus-band suggests that I just go and steal itback and done with it, without his fami-ly knowing in of it. I’m tempted, but it’snot all about the device. I have a realproblem with stealing. How would yousuggest I handle this?
Burglarized
DearBurglarized,
As you approach this situa-tion know that you musttake extreme caution. Yourpresentation to the mothershould not have strongaccusations or convictionsas you realize this child is
seen as one who can do no wrong. Afterall, your goal is to bring awareness andallow them to decide how to receive orrespond to it.

Merry Christmas.Remember the reason for
this season. Celebrate Christand the Christ in you.
There are many influ-ences which competefor our attention;
many different inputs whichseek to shape our view of theworld and, in turn, direct howwe make decisions about ourlife. There is also an enemywho greatly desires to winthis competition. The enemy
is battling for the hearts ofmen, women and children;and he knows if he can winthe battle of the mind, theheart will remain his.
Many of the battle linesare easy to recognize. For example, the direct assaultfrom various forms of sexual temptation and drugs claimnumerous victims every day. But there are many otherplans of the enemy which place hidden mine fields alongthe path and destroy those who are not careful where theystep. Perhaps the best disguised and most effectiveweapon of the enemy is that of worldly wisdom.
Since the Garden of Eden, the enemy has propagateda set of values which sound wise and appealing, butwhich consistently lead down a path of destruction. His"wisdom" attempts to define happiness and success - tellsus we must achieve, push, and obtain in order to succeedand be fulfilled. But if we will come into the presence ofGod, we will see the world's wisdom for what it trulyis...foolishness.
The values of the world are continually promoted inevery type of media and from every possible class ofpeople - even sometimes from those who profess faith inJesus. But these values are lies! They are weapons ofthe enemy used to pull us away from God...they are fool-ishness!! And when we choose to live as a captive toworld values, we have chosen to live outside of God'sperfect plan.God's plan will always require faith - always require
us to be "sure of what we hope for and certain of whatwe do not see". This often means we must have the faithand courage to stand alone. Though the world maylabel us a "fool," we must continue (and continue somemore) to "trust in the Lord with all your heart and leannot on your own understanding".
We are being called to become a fool to the world, butthis is not an easy task. We have been well "educated" inthe world system, and now must reshape the way wethink; "be transformed by the renewing of your mind"(Romans 12:2). This renewal process will take deter-mined, consistent, and intentional prayer and the study ofHis Word; but God will provide sufficient strength for theprocess. Let's refuse to live in a cloud of deception. Let'smake an uncompromising commitment to God and breakfree from the wisdom of the world.

The Message wasdelivered by Pastor Lloyd Morgan fromthe subject “The day the creator cameto visit His creation” St John 1:1-13.This being the season set aside to cele-brate the Birth of the Christ child wewere reminded that all things weremade by Him and without him nothing
was made, and although He made it allthe crown of his creation “man” did notreceive him. The same spirit prevailstoday; society is trying to take Christout of Christmas but you can’t haveChristmas without “CHRIST”. Themerchant man doesn’t want hisemployees to say merry Christmas buthe use the day to improve his bottomline and if it was not Christmas all thoseshoppers would not be there. I hopeevery believer will put Christ inChristmas if no one else does. We con-gratulate Deacon Billy Johnson and Sis.Vickie Dean on their marriage whichtook place on Saturday November 17.Thank God for those that still does itthe Biblical way, get married instead ofplaying house by “shacking”. We themembers of Union Hope PrimitiveBaptist church wish all of the readers ofthe Elite news a very Christmas and ablessed New Year. Christmas is finallyhere,
Let us go out and spread the cheer,Let us send out sincere wishes to allthose we meet, May our hearts be
filled with purity from under-neath.Merry Xmas to you and your
family.

This week I wantto talk about“prepara t ion”
for effective prayer.God in His infinite wis-dom has not left uswithout guidance, oftenstated that prayer is aworking agreement, afixed and invariableone between man andGod. First there must be
time spent in communication; second theremust be a place. Third, the prayer must be inJesus name. Fourth, the prayer must be in har-mony with the teaching of the Holy Scripture.Sixth, the prayer must be actual, simple andconfident. The meaning of Amen in Prayers
The word 'Amen' is a Hebrew wordmeaning firm and faithful. The literaltranslation is 'so be it' and is used where
one person confirms the words of another, andadds his wish for success to the other's vowsand predictions.

The National FootballLeague shows you itsmany personalities this
weekend. I have said on manyoccasions that there are severalteams that are identical to others.
The Giants and the Cowboys for an example are thesame team. If you paid attention the game they justplayed the both made the same identical mistakes.
They both look like they can beat the world whenthey’re well, when they’re not you wonder what do theydo all week at practice.
The first half of the Tampa Bay game the Cowboyslooked like they did in 1993, the second half they lookedlike a totally different team. The second half of lastweek’s game the Giants looked like they were ready to
make a run at the Super-bowl .against the Redskinsthey look like their twin, the Dallas Cowboys.
They didn’t pull straws to have records similar tothe Cowboys they’re the same team. One’s got a differ-ent coach and quarterback. No secondary, no lineback-
ers, decent front 4, nothing spectacular. Justin Tuck(Giants) spends as much time on the side lines in crucialmoments as DeMarcus Ware does for the Cowboys.
Ware is sometimes compared to Lawrence Taylor, and I’m trying to figure how. They don’t play at all alike,Lawrence dominated every play. DeMarcus set his manup for one big rush. After he got that one big rush inSaturday he spent the rest of the afternoon standing onthe side line with his helmet in his hand. The team sayshe’s got a stinger he says he’s ok!
This is not just Cowboys; the league has a split per-sonality. All year Green Bay has been bill as unbeatable, and Aaron Rogers could throw through the eye of a nee-dle. Today I’m hearing Drew Brees could be the league’sMVP. Green Bay looked like The Rams. The Eagleslook like the 85 bears. The Jets look like the Colts.
All you guys that had your Super- bowl picks readytake it easy and be careful. This thing hasn’t been settled.Aaron Rogers was thought to be having the best yearever by a quarterback, now today they’re saying DrewBrees could be the MVP. Would you believe if I Said thePacker may not go to the Super-bowl? Do not be sur-prised who you see in the Super-bowl. Really don’t besurprised who don’t make it. How about Houston - NewOrleans. Anyone that’s got a shot can pull it off, all ofthese guys are professional keep an open mind, it’s a freemovie set back and enjoy.
This is truly a year where everybody has a chanceBengal, Texans, Cowboys, Charges, even Eagles. All ofthis sounds like a joke but don’t laugh until you see thefirst week in February. Not the last week in December.

By the time you are finished opening gifts, sipping a littlecoffee and smacking on that cinnamon roll on Christmasmorning, you’ll be able to dive into another pile of gifts
from the NBA. The NBA gift for Dallas Mavericks fans will bea re-match with the Miami Heat.
A season ago, the Dallas Mavericks worked their way to theplayoffs as one of the top teams in the Western Conference.Despite their regular season, the Mavs were dismissed by near-ly everybody when they got to the playoffs. It started in the firstround and carried over into the NBA Finals against the MiamiHeat where the Mavs shocked the NBA World and brought anNBA Championship to Big D.
Six months seems like a long time to wait for a loved one toreturn. But when we saw the Christmas Day lineup of NBAgames that the schedule-making powers-that-be whipped up forus, it melted any lingering animosity we might have had aboutthe 149-day lockout.
Prior to raising the Championship banner on Christmas night, the Mavericks will have a new look roster in their pursuit of arepeat. A number of the key contributors are back. DirkNowitzki, Jason Terry, Jason Kidd, and Shawn Marion areback. Mavs also made some additions as well. The Mavericksbrought in Vince Carter, Delonte West, and Lamar Odom to adda ton of depth to an already impressive roster, but the Maverickshad one huge loss. Dallas lost their lynchpin on defense. TysonChandler was one of the most underrated players in the NBA ayear ago yet the Mavericks don’t win the title without him man-ning the middle and bringing a toughness and defensive mind-
set to Dallas. This season, the Mavs won’t be flying under theradar. The defending champs will have the bulls-eye on theirback and their quest to repeat became more difficult this off sea-son when Tyson Chandler went to the Knicks.
Owner, Mark Cuban was asked why the roster changed somuch after winning the championship. He answered and said“There is no simple answer other than to say the rules changed. The Collective Bargaining Agreement just changed completely. In the past, when you are a luxury tax team that just meant youpaid money. There were no competitive limitations at all. That’s all out the window. Now, not only do you pay moneyand more money, but there’s a whole list of things that you’re
not able to do or limits on what you can do that change every-thing. We had to change the strategy.”
Merry Christmas to the Dallas Mavericks on Christmas Day,and good luck from the Elite News Staff. Go Mavs!

A Christmas tradition gave slaves some relieffrom their oppressive conditions was the celebra-tion of the Johnkankus (also called the ChristmasMasquerade). This tradition, popular on the east-ern coast of North Carolina and in other parts ofthe South, is considered by historians as one of,if not the earliest, African American Christmastraditions in the United States.

Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson announced thatthere will be a moratorium on the closing or consolida-tion of post offices or mail processing facilities in North
Texas. On Tuesday, fifteen U.S. Senators and the U.S. PostalService (USPS) issued a moratorium on the closure of thousandsof post offices throughout the country until May 15, 2012. ThePostal Service would like to cut costs by consolidating about3,700 post offices, end Saturday service, and eliminate first classovernight mail.
“While I applaud members of the Senate and USPS leadershipfor reaching this agreement, I do have some longstanding con-cerns that I have been seeking resolution on since 2009 when thefirst Area Mail Processing (AMP) feasibility studies were beingconducted. In a series of letters to USPS and meetings with theagency’s leadership, I have been very vocal in my opposition toclosing or relocating these mailing centers in my congressionaldistrict. In an economy where unemployment runs high andsocial mobility runs low, there could not be a worse time to closethousands of retail branches and put even more hard workingAmericans out of work,” stated Congresswoman Johnson.
Since 2009, Congresswoman Johnson has been actively fight-ing to ensure that Dallas residents, as well as the city’s largebusiness community have access to adequate postal services. She understands that the USPS needs to cut costs to stay com-petitive, but wants to ensure cuts don’t hinder residents or theirbusinesses. Congresswoman Johnson met with thousands of
constituents to gather public input on the best approach to keeppost offices open. She has also kept in consistent contact withthe Postmaster General on a host of issues related to access toservices for the 30th Congressional District and North Texas.
Congresswoman Johnson is a co-sponsor of H.R. 1351, theUSPS Pension Obligation Recalculation and Restoration Act, abipartisan piece of legislation to help the USPS recoup nearly $7billion in overpayments to its pension fund.
Congresswoman Eddie Bernice JohnsonStatement onOn Tuesday, December 13, fifteen U.S. Senators in conjunc-
tion with Postal Service leadership announced a verbal agree-ment to halt any post office closures until May 15, 2012. Thismoratorium is intended to give Congress the time it needs toenact comprehensive postal reform without needlessly restruc-turing the agency at the cost of tens of thousands of jobs. Thisannouncement comes at a time when USPS faces a projected$14.1 billion loss in fiscal 2012 and is evaluating the possibilityof closing up to 3,700 local branches and 252 mail-processingfacilities. One such facility and a number of retail branchesthroughout the 30th District of Texas stand to be affected bythese proposed changes.
While I applaud members of the Senate and USPS leadershipfor reaching this agreement, I do have some longstanding con-cerns that I have been seeking resolution on since 2009 when thefirst Area Mail Processing (AMP) feasibility studies were beingconducted. In a series of letters to USPS and meetings with theagency’s leadership, I have been very vocal in my opposition toclosing or relocating these mailing centers. In an economy
where unemployment runs high and social mobility runs low, there could not be a worse time to close thousands of retailbranches and put even more hard working Americans out ofwork. This agreement to delay the closures is a positivesign that Congress and the USPS are able and willing to come toa viable solution in solving the agency’s financial woes. However, at my behest, we have seen such delays before in the30th District and yet USPS has still not developed a comprehen-sive plan to streamline its operations and update the agency’srole in the 21st century. I have requested more transparency andavailability for public input from the agency when conductingits feasibility studies, yet that has not happened in my opinion. Ihave met with USPS leadership to discuss the effects these clo-sures would have on jobs for thousands of Americans, and yettheir decisions have not reflected a serious consideration ofthose concerns.
With this announcement, it remains apparent that the bulk ofour work remains. I am eager to work with my colleagues in theSenate and USPS leadership in the coming months to find prac-tical and cost-effective solutions to this very serious problem.Nobody is ignoring the fact that USPS mail volume has declinedtremendously, however like any business the USPS must evolvewith the ever-changing times and redefine itself in a dynamicand unpredictable economy. I have always and will continue tobe willing to work with my colleagues to facilitate this change;however it is largely up to the USPS leadership to guide theagency into a prosperous future.

With the sudden death of his father, Kim Jong Unwent from being North Korea's "RespectedGeneral" to "Great Successor" — a heady and
uncertain promotion for a young man virtually unknown evento the North Korean people just a year ago. Word of Kim JongIl's death, announced Monday two days after he suffered a fatalheart attack, thrusts his 20-something son in the spotlight as thefuture head of a nation grappling with difficult nuclear negotia-tions and chronic food shortages.Within hours of breaking the news of his father's death, state
media urged the nation's people to rally around Kim Jong Unand to "faithfully revere" their next leader. The son has notappeared publicly since the announcement of his father's death. The death speeds up a succession process that began in earnesta little more than a year ago — scant time to gain experience, build political clout and allay skepticism at home and abroadthat he can lead a nation of 24 million. His father, by contrast, had 20 years of grooming before his father, North Koreafounder Kim Il Sung, passed away in 1994.
News of Kim's death shocked a nation largely kept in the darkabout their leader's health even after he suffered a stroke in2008. Abroad, there was widespread speculation throughout2009 about who would succeed the iron-fisted ruler. Kim JongUn's emergence in September 2010 as the anointed successorsettled the question of which of Kim Jong Il's three known sonswas chosen as the third-generation leader in a family dynastythat has ruled since North Korea's post-World War II inceptionin 1948.And his status as his father's anointed successor has become
clear over the course of the past year. Af ter appointing him vicechairman of the Central Military Commission of the rulingWorkers' Party, Kim Jong Il unveiled the son to the world justweeks later at a massive military parade to celebrate a key partyanniversary.
With the world's media in attendance and transmitting livevideo, the young son appeared on the balcony of the GrandPeople's Study Hall in a blue suit, waving as tanks loaded withlong-range missiles barreled by. Stocky and youthful, he bearsmore than a passing resemblance to his grandfather, Kim IlSung, as a young man — a similarity that plays into the empha-sis on lineage and legacy as just cause to make him leader.
Kim Jong Il's leadership was defined by his "songun" policyof putting the powerful military first. Kim Jong Un's formalascension will usher in a new era of leadership — but it remainsto be seen what direction he will take the nation of 24 millionpeople.
"It is impossible to say with certainty what his era will look
like. Trying to anticipate the near future is tough enough," saidAndray Abrahamian, executive director of the ChosonExchange, a Singapore-based nonprofit group that facilitateseducational exchange with North Korea. "We expect greatercaution and less willingness to try new things in the near term, making our programs more difficult to run. Things look likethey're locking down already."He is said to celebrate his birthday in January, but the year —
or even the name of his mother — have not been revealed pub-licly. Even his name, though whispered for years, was neverpublished in state media until the announcement in September2010 that he had been promoted to four-star general. "There isa rumor that he is married, but officially we don't know," saidYoon Deok-ryong, who specializes in North Korean econom-ic reform at the Korea Institute for International EconomicPolicy in Seoul. On Monday, the state-run Korean Central News Agency
called him the "Great Successor," and urged the people to rallyaround their next leader. Kim Jong Un is expected to lean onmembers of his father's inner circle, including his aunt, KimJong Il's sister Kim Kyong Hui; her husband, Jang SongThaek; and other Kim Jong Il confidants, experts said.
"I wouldn't draw huge conclusions from the fact that he spenta year or two in Europe as a boy," Delury said. "But you know,he's significantly younger, and generational shifts happen nomatter wherever you are in the world, including North Korea,so he is going to have a different orientation."Apart from these few tantalizing details, much remains
unknown about Jong Un or the real breadth of his power."There's much uncertainty," Yoon said. "Because we don't
know who's really in charge."___Associated Press writers Alexa Olesen in Beijing, Malcolm
