W ell... Hey There! W ell... Hey There! Interested in getting into the hobby of R/C model submarining? We're the right place. D&E Miniatures is here to provide you with just about every item you need to construct, outfit, and operate your own radio controlled model submarine; the items not carried by the local hobby shop... the hard-to-get items.

INTRODUCTION

If you don't have any R/C vehicle experience yet, I recommend you first purchase and assemble either an R/C boat or car kit to better familiarize yourself with the building and operation of R/C vehicles. This will help you learn the special maintenance, logistical support, and repair tasks associated with R/C Models. This game is definitely for the R/C experienced!

An experienced R/C model operator or not, we strongly encourage you to buy and study our videotape, `Introduction To R/C Submarining'. We also recommend you join the SubCommittee, an organization dedicated to the hobby of model submarining - their quarterly magazine, the SubCommittee Report, is a wealth of information about the sport of R/C

submarining. Within the pages of the Report you will find additional sources of hulls, and devices. D&E is a source to several GRP hull kit manufacturers in this game: we have produced tooling and detailed hull

masters for three of the Thor Design and Development kits. We also produce pressure cast polyurethane and cast metal parts for other kit manufacturers.

Come on in the waters fine! - David & Ellie Merriman

COMMON QUESTIONS "How can I shop for R/C submarine hulls and devices if I don't know what is on the market to make these models work under water?" That should be the first question you asked yourself as you considered getting into this game. Here are some answers addressing that and several other frequently asked questions. ARE THERE ANY SPECIAL DEVICES NEEDED TO OPERATE AN R/C SUBMARINE?

R/C submarines, specifically those employing a ballast tank, require two special control devices. The first one is an automatic pitch stabilization device, which controls the servo that drives the horizontal stern planes. The other device, called a fail-safe or missing pulse detector, steps in to automatically command a ballast system `blow' to surface the model in the event the R/C signal is not detected by the R/C system receiver. Even the most experienced R/C submariner can't see his submerged submarine well enough to send corrective commands in time to assure positive control of the submarines pitch angle. Stepping in to drive the stern planes, the APC works to keep a "zero bubble", making the R/C submarine very east to drive under water.

Page 4: D&E MINIATURES 2000 Model Submarine Catalog

4 D&E Miniatures – 2000 Spring/Summer

Because a submerged model submarine is subject to occasional interruption of the R/C signal between transmitter and receiver a fail-safe circuit, such as the SubSafe missing pulse detector must be installed between the receiver and ballast system servo/solenoid to prevent the loss of the model. With the exception of the angle keeper and fail-safe, the R/C system installed aboard a model submarine is very much like that employed by a plane, car, or boat model. HOW DO I MAKE WATERTIGHT THOSE SPACES ABOARD MY MODEL THAT HOUSE THE PROPULSION AND CONTROL EQUIPMENT? The traditional answer, and still a viable option employed by many, is to build into the submarine hull two or more transverse bulkheads, topping the compartment(s) with a seating flange, and capping the compartment(s) with a clear acrylic or lexan lid. The lid is typically secured in place with mechanical fasteners. A gasket, between the removable lid and flange, forms a (hopefully) watertight seal. Within such a watertight space(s) are housed those devices that have to work in a dry environment. Making watertight spaces represents the most daunting task the R/C submarine model builder faces. However, if you don't want to go to all that trouble, we offer a series of watertight containers designed to fit within just about any commercially available R/C submarine hull kit on the market today. Our WTC’s are varied in physical size, ballast tank reserve buoyancy (floodable capacity), and number and type of propulsion motor(s). Each WTC contains factory installed propulsion motor(s) with attached gear reduction unit(s), o-ring sealed compartment bulkheads, drive shaft and push-rod watertight seals, mounting equipment, and an assembled and tested gas-type ballast sub-system featuring a `gas-saver.' Our WTC's come complete with all the propulsion and ballast elements needed to operate your model submarine. Buy one of our WTC's and drop in an R/C system, fail-safe circuit, angle keeper, battery, speed controller and you're ready to Rock 'n' Roll!

WILL THE RADIO SIGNAL FROM MY TRANSMITTER REACH MY SUBMERGED MODEL?

No matter what R/C system you use, the radio signal will penetrate fresh water a surprising distance - operating a model submarine at `periscope depth' over 100 feet away is not a problem! Care must be taken to comply with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules; you must use R/C equipment working on the assigned `surface' frequencies allocated by the FCC. Most of our equipment works on the 75mHz band.

The only special R/C system design consideration of importance to a sub Driver is the transmitters stick and switch layout - is it `user friendly'; does the transmitter permit easy and quick control of rudder, stern plane, bow plane, and throttle commands? A test, conducted a number of years ago by Skip Asay (The 'Godfather' of American R/C Submarining), saw an R/C submarine escorted to the bottom of a 20 foot deep, fresh water, rock quarry lake by an observer/Diver. The Diver later reported that the model was receiving and responding to all transmitted commands from the shore-side operator. I routinely operate my R/C submarines at cross ranges in excess of 200 feet at depths between 1 and 2 feet with no loss of control. HOW DEEP CAN THE MODEL GO? That depends on the shape, materials used, and design of the watertight spaces within the R/C model submarine. A square `box' like compartment is subject to distortion and failure when exposed to only a moderate hydrostatic force (water pressure). A cylinder is considerably more resistant to deformation. A sphere is the perfect pressure resistant structure, but not very practical for our use. Design of the watertight space within a model submarine is critical. One specific submarine kit has been on the market for many years and several customers have experienced a failure of its watertight compartment, which resulted in the models loss. Most kits and scratch-built R/C submarines will occasionally dive to depths in excess of 10 feet without leaking or compartment failure. However, it is not recommended to dive deeper than 5 feet as that depth is more than adequate to run beneath most deep keeled sail boat models that may cross your path. But, to ease your mind, our WTC's are certified to maintain their structural integrity to a depth of at least 33 feet (one atmosphere)! HOW ABOUT VISIBILITY?

Significantly limiting how deep you can safely run your R/C submarine is the waters visibility. As with any other type R/C craft, `if you can't see it, you can't drive it'. The R/C submarines periscope is your best visual cue as to where and in what direction your R/C submarine is traveling. The majority of an R/C submarines operating time is at periscope depth. Just about the only time you would dive the model deeper is to avoid collision with a surface craft, or to sneak in to attack a surface craft or unsuspecting duck. Rarely will you find a lake whose visibility will permit operation of your R/C submarine below a 5-foot depth. Chlorine and other chemicals in pools will block the R/C signal at depths below 3 feet or so, restricting your operating depth in those bodies of water.

WHAT'S A DRY-HULL TYPE R/C SUBMARINE?

In the old days of the hobby, R/C submarine hull kits were designed as completely dry vessels; the envelope of the hull formed one big watertight enclosure. The advantage to this type design is the ease of equipment installation throughout the hulls length. The disadvantage is the need to provide watertight seals for every penetrating device - seals often located in hard to reach areas. And dry-hull type R/C submarines need exceptionally large amounts of fixed ballast weight to counter the models high displacement, making even a moderately sized boat a very heavy affair.

WHAT'S A WET-HULL TYPE R/C SUBMARINE? The majority of R/C submarine hull kits offered today are of the wet-hull type. The outer hull is nothing more than a free-flooding fairing - usually constructed of fiberglass (often referred to as glass reinforced plastic, or GRP). Free flooding openings in the bottom permit for quick flooding/draining of the hull. This type R/C submarine employs a special watertight box or cylinder within the free-flooding hull to house those components that need a dry environment. The R/C submarine hull kits offered in this catalog are of the wet-hull type. BE HONEST WITH ME, HOW MUCH IS THIS GOING TO COST? We'll assume you have no batteries, R/C equipment... you're starting from scratch! Lets take two examples to answer: With your typical dynamically diving R/C submarine, you'll drop nearly $650. It will not be able to `hover' underwater and you'll have to keep it moving to remain submerged. On the other hand, outfitting a ballast tank equipped boat, like those offered in this catalog will put you back at least $1200! ...Need some Oxygen? Why the high price, and what is the difference in capability between a dynamically diving and ballast equipped model submarine? Well, read on: HOW DIFFICULT IS A SUBMARINE HULL KIT TO CONSTRUCT?

Talk about a loaded question! The degree of difficulty - and cost - varies with how much work and care the kit manufacturer took and the type subject. I'll put it to you this way: some kit manufacturers give you little more than a box full of Fiberglass and solid cast resin parts, but no drawings or instructions, leaving you to scratch build the deck and all detail items. As a consequence, you pay little and get little. High dollar kits, such as our SKIPJACK, come assembled and need only to have a few flood/drain holes opened up, a final painting, installation of the recommended WTC-3, a quick trimming session, and your ready to make the lake safe for Democracy! An R/C Sub kit can take days or weeks to assemble!

D&E Miniatures – 2000 Spring/Summer 7

For those with little time and who can afford it, D&E Miniatures offers a complete built-up and ready to go (turnkey) service: any R/C submarine you wish is built, painted, outfitted, tested, and shipped your way. But it ain't cheap! For example, our turnkey 1/96 SKIPJACK would put you back $2800! (Kind of makes you want to practice those model-building skills, doesn't it?). Contact us for a quote and availability.

Bottom line: You get what you pay for.

Most kits demand of you such skills as adhering fiberglass parts together, cutting out flood and vent holes, making and installing control surface yokes and linkages, filling, priming, and painting - a background in scratch building is a definite asset. ARE THERE CLUBS AND GROUPS DEDICATED TO THE HOBBY OF R/C SUBMARINING? Yes, The SubCommittee (complete information available elsewhere) produces a quarterly magazine full of R/C submarine building, testing, outfitting, trimming, and operation tips of profound interest to the R/C submariner.

Ask your hobby shop for contact names and locations of local model clubs, International Plastic Model Society, and Scale Ship Model Society Chapters. There are regional SubCommittee chapters throughout the United States and other countries. Computer servers such as America On-line, CompuServe, and Prodigy have special forums and discussion groups specifically relating to R/C submarining. Various Home Pages on the Internet cater to our interests as well: D&E Miniatures and the SubCommittee are `on line' and more sites are being added all the time! Here is a couple to start: (URL is to be keyed exactly)

CAN I ARM MY MODEL WITH WORKING TORPEDOES AND MISSILES? Yes, but such weapons are recommended only for experienced and mature R/C sub Drivers. Torpedoes are typically propelled by small electric motors or Propel gas. For those of you wishing to pose an intercontinental threat, Matthew Spade has perfected a Propel boosted ballistic missiles that he launches (submerged!) from his 1/96 OHIO class submarine. Incidentally, these weapons, and more, are all explained and demonstrated in our videotape, `Introduction To R/C Submarining'.

DYNAMICALLY DIVING AND BALLAST TANK EQUIPPED R/C SUBMARINES We can further define an R/C submarine as either being a `dynamically' diving type or one employing a ballast tank system. A wet-hull type R/C submarine kit such as the ones we offer can be configured to operate as a dynamically diving or ballast tank-equipped boat. DYNAMICALLY DIVING R/C SUBMARINE

The less expensive R/C submarines, offered by Robbe, Graupner and Krick for example, are typically dynamic divers. These models rely on speed and horizontal planes to force the boat under. Though traveling at sometimes unrealistically high speed, these R/C submarines can be made to work quite well. Dynamically diving R/C submarines rise to the surface once forward speed has dropped below a critical level.

BALLAST TANK EQUIPPED R/C SUBMARINE Equipped with a ballast tank (gas, piston, or pump type) an R/C submarine can be operated underwater with great precision. Piston and some gas type ballast systems even permit you to hover the model motionless at a specific depth. Unfortunately such enhanced underwater performance has a price: the complexity, internal volume occupied by such a system, and the need (with the gas-type) to periodically recharge the on-board gas bottle with propellant, makes for an expensive and high maintenance installation. By making the model nearly neutrally buoyant underwater, a ballast system provides the driver (you) with the ability to stalk a target at minimum speed without fear of broaching the boat, or to firewall the throttle and dash across the lake or pool to escape an attacking Destroyer.

WATERTIGHT CYLINDERS

WTC-3/DEWTC-3/$360 - This 3" diameter watertight cylinder contains everything needed to propel and control most wet-hull type R/C submarines measuring between 30" and 45" in length. The WTC arrives with all ballast and propulsion elements installed and tested for correct operation and watertight integrity. Though recommended for use with 4-channel equipment (using only two standard sized servos), the WTC-3 can accommodate a 5-channel system if mini or micro sized servos are used.

The forward dry space of the WTC-3 houses the battery and speed controller, which are accessed through the forward watertight bulkhead. The center area of the WTC is the ballast tank with a reserve buoyancy of 12 ounces. The installed on-board bottle holds enough Propel for 15 blow/vent cycles between charges. The gas-type ballast system includes an installed servo and `gas-saver' mechanism, which acts to prevent wasting Propel overboard when the tank is dry. The after dry section contains the control and propulsion elements, all accessed through the removable motor bulkhead. The installed Graupner 400, 7 Volt motor drives, through a 3:1 gear reduction unit, the single output shaft. Simple push rod and propulsion shaft connectors between the WTC and models drive and control surface linkages make for very quick installation and removal of the entire WTC package from the hull. The WTC-3 can be removed or installed within a hull in only seconds. Easy access to the internal items within the WTC makes for quick adjustment or repair at the lake.

Page 15: D&E MINIATURES 2000 Model Submarine Catalog

D&E Miniatures – 2000 Spring/Summer 15

Push rods, servo connectors, speed controller/motor/battery cables, Dumas universal couplers, and other hardware included. Over 30 pages of instructions not only show you how to outfit the WTC-3, but go on to show how to trim your R/C submarine for successful operation. Additional items needed to outfit the WTC-3: 4-channel R/C system with two standard servos, Traxxas speed controller, APC-3, SubSafe, 7 Volt 1500 mAH Ni-Cad battery, battery charger, can of Propel, and Propel charging fitting.

WTC-3 mod 2 /DEWTC-3 mod 2/$405 - This unit is recommended for model R/C submarines with two propellers and a need for greater reserve buoyancy. This 3" diameter watertight cylinder contains everything (less the battery) needed to propel and control most wet-hull type R/C submarines measuring between 45" and 70" in length. The WTC arrives with all ballast and propulsion (two Graupner 400 7 Volt motors) elements installed and tested for correct operation and watertight integrity. Though recommended for use with 5-channel equipment (using three standard sized servos), the WTC-3 mod 2 can accommodate an 8-channel system if mini sized servos are used. The WTC arrives with a ballast tank sized to produce 30 ounces of reserve buoyancy. This number can be reduced by either physically shortening the length of the cylinder or by inserting solid foam displacing material within the ballast tank. Simple push-rod and propulsion shaft connectors between the WTC and models drive and control surface linkages makes for very quick installation and removal of the WTC package from the hull. The WTC-3 mod 2 can be swapped between different submarine hulls in only minutes. Easy access to the internal items permits quick adjustment or repair at the shop or lake. Push rods, servo connectors, speed controller/motor/battery cables, Dumas universal couplers, and other hardware included. Additional items needed to outfit the WTC-3 mod 2: 5 to 8-channel R/C system with two standard or three mini servos, one 20 Ampere or two ST-10 Speed Controllers, APC-3, SubSafe, 7 Volt 4Ah gel-cell battery, BE/VR Battery Eliminator Circuit, can of Propel, and Propel charging fitting.

This red/black colored silicon insulated multi-strand conductor is extremely flexible, won't burn when soldering with a torch, accepts solder readily, and offers the minimum resistance to high loads. Cables are premium heavy-duty conductors.

PROPEL CHARGING ADAPTER/DEWTC003/$18.00 – Compatible with any gas-type ballast system using a `tire valve' to charge the on-board bottle. Our Propel charging adapter is simply screwed onto the Propel can and you're ready to charge.

3/16" flanged `oilite' bearing/DERG002/$2.00 each - These thrust and transverse load bearings are used at the stern of many R/C submarine hulls to retain the propeller shaft. The flanged faces insure low friction ahead and astern load points.

Gear Drive Reduction Unit/DERG001/$30 - A very economical choice over other units that sell for three times the cost! This 3:1 gear reduction unit mounts directly to the face of most 05 sized electric motors. To match the high speed/low torque propulsion motor output to the slower turning/high torque requirements of a marine propeller. Motor pinion gear is bored for either 1/8" or 3/32" sized shaft - please specify. 3" Cylinder Watertight Cap/DEWTC001/$30 - Custom make your own watertight cylinder! This o-ring equipped watertight cap fits cylinders with an inside diameter of 2.75". Use it to mount a motor, to cap the front end of a WTC, or remove the flange and make it an internal watertight bulkhead. Specify if you want it equipped with a pressure relief valve. 3.5" Cylinder Watertight Cap/DEWTC002/$30 - Custom make your own watertight cylinder! This o-ring equipped watertight cap fits cylinders with an inside diameter of 3.25". Use it to mount a motor, to cap the front end of a WTC, or remove the flange and make it an internal watertight bulkhead. Specify if you want it equipped with a pressure relief valve.

LOW PRESSURE BLOW-VALVE/DEWTC004/$20 - This tire valve type blow-valve fits the D&E Miniatures ballast tank bulkhead, but can be used with any servo or solenoid actuated gas type ballast system. Depressing the valve stem (only 10 ounces of force required when controlling a 50psi gas source, such as Propel) releases the gas into the ballast tank. Blow valve comes with attached 4" length of medium pressure flexible hose.

THE SUBCOMMITTEE Want to be kept up to date on R/C and static submarine model building through the pages of a quarterly magazine? Read on:

The SubCommittee is a group of people interested in submarines; with a primary interest in building models of them for both display and radio-control operation.

That interest extends to the history and design of submarines of all nations and eras, research and reference material about submarines, specific information on building model submarines, both static-display and radio-controlled, reviews of model kits and sources of modeling supplies, the collecting of submarine memorabilia and anything else submarine-related.

Direct contact between members, by phone, letter, and Internet, as well as through the magazine, is promoted. The SubCommittee is, at its core, an information network of friends helping friends. The SubCommittee conducts the premiere annual model submarine regatta held at the United States Naval Submarine Base in Groton, Connecticut.

The SubCommittee is a non-profit mutual-benefit group and is not affiliated with any vendor or model manufacturer.
