For her début album, Karen Gomyo has joined forces with guitarist Ismo Eskelinen in a programme offering fireworks as well as graceful tenderness. A violin virtuoso as well as an expert guitar player, Niccolò Paganini wrote a number of works for the two instruments together. He thus forms a natural point of departure as Gomyo and Eskelinen embark on a journey some hundred years backwards in history, and offer works by three other famous Italian violinist-composers. Neither the violin sonatas by Vivaldi and Locatelli nor Corelli’s celebrated ‘La Follia’ were written specifically with the guitar in mind. They are instead provided with so-called basso continuo accompaniments to be performed on various chord-playing instruments, such as the harpsichord or the organ. Larger continuo ensembles might also include a lute or a guitar, and it is to this tradition that Ismo Eskelinen harks back as he performs his own realizations of these accompaniments. With one exception, the works by Paganini are on the other hand intended for the combination of violin and guitar – or, in the case of the Grand Sonata, ‘per chitarra e violino’. The centrepiece of the disc is formed by the famous 24th Caprice, provided by the composer with a guitar accompaniment and renamed Variazioni di bravura. Another favourite closes the disc, as Karen Gomyo and Ismo Eskelinen perform their version for violin and guitar of Il carnevale di Venezia, Paganini’s take on a Neapolitan folk song.

Aram Khachaturian Piano Works

Born in 1903, Aram Khachaturian became the most significant twentieth-century musical figure in the then Soviet Republic of Armenia. Many of his most important works date from the first half of his career. The expressive immediacy of his music, conditioned by his Armenian heritage with its sensuous melodic writing, its vibrant orchestration and rhythmic drive – all resulted in a popularity equalled by few composers of his generation. Although he is primarily associated with large orchestral scores – including the ballets Gayaneh and Spartacus, perennial favourites with concert audiences – he also left a number of works for piano solo. For his début disc, the Jordanian-Palestinian pianist Iyad Sughayer has put together a recital spanning from the ample and demanding Sonata to the delightful Children’s Album, consisting of ten miniatures, in turn playful and poignant. The recital closes with a piece which did a great deal to establish Khachaturian’s name near the outset of his international career. Composed in 1932 (allegedly in a single evening), the Toccata in E flat minor soon established itself among the showpieces of the modern repertoire and was to become a calling-card for aspiring virtuosi. Iyad Sughayer was born in 1993 in Amman, where he received his early training. He is currently based in the UK.

Principal trombonist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Jörgen van Rijen is also much in demand as a soloist with a special commitment to promoting his instrument. Various composers have written new pieces for him, including James MacMillan and Theo Verbey, whose works are included on the present disc together with Luciano Berio’s SOLO for trombone and orchestra. The present recordings were made at concerts with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, conducted by Iván Fischer, Markus Stenz and Ed Spanjaard respectively. They have previously been showcased on three different discs on the RCO’s own Live Horizon label, and are gathered together here for the first time. The disc therefore highlights the versatility of van Rijen as a musician, but also of his instrument as perceived and presented by three very different composers.

This CD marks the recording premiere of four cantatas by Gottfried August Homilius for Advent and Christmas. Homilius was the number-one composer of Protestant church music during the second half of the eighteenth century and during his lifetime was regarded as ‘perhaps today’s very best church composer’. After his death the lexicographer Ernst Ludwig Gerber expressed the view that he was »without contradiction our greatest church composer.« Homilius’ music already displays elements of early Classicism and the sensibility of the empfindsamer Stil, his cantata choruses are frequently homophonic and songlike in design, and polyphonic sections are rather rare. His cantatas composed around 1776 prove to be works of individual design and conception and attest to his mastery as a composer. Arias of great tonal beauty, the naturalness of their expression, and the dramatic suspense of the various numbers continue to fascinate listening audiences even today!

In the 1960s Aram Khachaturian engaged in a number of experiments in which he covered terrain situated at an astonishing distance from the immediately appealing tone of the works that he had composed prior to those years. These experiments included the first of his three concert rhapsodies, in which he completely emancipated himself from the established forms that he had filled out in his concertos for piano, violin, and violoncello, which already then were world famous. While the virtuosic ambitions of the rhapsodies are in no way inferior to the technical demands of their older sister works, he now requires what is perhaps an even higher measure of expressive shared experiencing and solo messaging. The direct juxtaposition of the two concert violin compositions recorded by Antje Weithaas and Daniel Raiskin and the Rhineland-Palatinate State Symphony Orchestra conveys the extraordinarily grand leap into a ‘modernism’ that hardly anybody would have thought possible for the author of the Sabre Dance. In 1971 Aram Khachaturian was honored for his rhapsodic risk-taking when he received the State Prize of the Soviet Union for his second concert trilogy.

Richard Strauss Symphony, Op. 12; Concert Overture in C minor

During the summer of 1883 Richard Strauss composed two large-format orchestral works in traditional genres, the lengthy Concert Overture in C minor and the Symphony in F minor op. 12, both of them also with the same instruments. The overture is anything but a secondary effort; it also cannot be understood as a simple »work of his youth.« Although the key and the opening stance of the overture clearly point to Beethoven’s Coriolanus Overture, the subliminal irritations, frictions, surprises, and saliencies already present here become even much more apparent in the symphony. As in the overture, so too in the symphony: the composer abstains from any sort of allusions to content, and – even more strikingly – he does not include a dedication, even though the work was immediately published. And the finale pursues an unusual course, not with a breakthrough but over a festive path leading to a hymnic theme followed by an absolutely wild conclusion.

Julius Röntgen Works for Violin & Piano, Vol. 2

The works on this CD feature the Scandinavian influences that the Swedish violinist and the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg exerted on Julius Röntgen’s music for violin and piano. Amanda Maier was Röntgen’s great love and his first wife, and Grieg was his best friend. Significantly, Edvard Grieg is represented in the first work on this CD in the form of the sonata that Röntgen composed »In Memory of Edvard Grieg.« However, precisely this work is the only one on the present program that was not published during Röntgen’s lifetime. His Swedish Melodies and Dances may initially seem unassuming, but they display the highest virtuosity. They require great technical mastery from the instrumentalists with their third, sixth, and octave intervals, swift passages in the highest register, and leaps extending over several octaves. Even though the Norwegian Variations last a mere seven minutes and thus are not very lengthily dimensioned, they number among Röntgen’s best variation works. The exposition of the theme in D major is followed by eight variations in which the piano and the violin take turns in the lead role.

During the late nineteenth century countless composers modeled their operas on Pietro Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana, hoping that this strategy would likewise bring them success. These composers included not only Leoncavallo with his Pagliacci but also the young composer Pierantonio Tasca. Although Tasca had grown up in Sicily, in A Santa Lucia he depicted Naples, Italy’s largest city and a metropolitan world plagued by poverty and the everyday struggle for survival. This opera celebrated its premiere not in Naples, not in Rome or Milan, but at the Kroll Opera in Berlin on 16 November 1892 and enjoyed great success. For some years this captivating, impassioned, and tender music and its highly atmospheric local color earned Tasca the rank of the most esteemed »young Italian« composer in Germany, right along with Mascagni and Leoncavallo.

Jean-Baptiste Loeillet was from a Flemish family whose members included a number of musicians, two of whom went by the name of Jean-Baptiste Loeillet. Already in the eighteenth century this onomastic fact caused irritation and confusion. Our Jean-Baptiste, who later enjoyed a career as John Loeillet in London, was born in Ghent in 1680. What motivated him to go to London when he was a young man? Unfortunately, our sources are silent about this matter. However, he is termed »Mr John Loeillet« in printed editions, which perhaps reflects the fact that he chose London as his home in the 1720s. His Trio Sonatas for flute (transverse flute and recorder), oboe, and basso continuo are virtuosic and multilayered. Galant tones endow the sonatas with rhythmically finely pointed, flowing tone clusters. The members of the EPOCA BAROCCA chamber music ensemble interpret the trio sonatas on original Baroque instruments and with their trademark passionate verve.

Our first collaborative venture with the Constanze Quartet from Salzburg also marks the production of the first complete recording of the string quartets of Felix Draeseke – a German composer, a representative of the new German school, and a contemporary of Franz Liszt, Richard Wagner, and Johannes Brahms. Draeseke’s string quartets are unique in style. In them we often encounter influence from Wagner, even if not in the form of an imitation of Wagnerian compositional style but as a creative continuation of the legacy of Classical composers such as they were transmitted to Draeseke through Wagner. The idea of a »melodic thread« holding the music together while serving as a unifying element is in evidence everywhere in these works. Both quartets impressively demonstrate the words of the Draeseke expert Christoph Schlüren: ‘Draeseke is primarily lyrical in nature but at the same time has his appealing harshness and explores the dark, introverted expressive worlds with a unique imagination. The far-reaching melos is tailored for contrapuntal suitability, and for German circumstances the rhythm is particularly zestful and highly varied’.

Longingly awaited: L’Arte dell’Arco now at last has recorded more instrumental works by the composer Francesco Veracini for cpo. The first release met with a unanimously enthusiastic response: »Here everything fits perfectly; here instrumentalists perform with passion; here a very great ensemble is revealed. The team effort is fascinating; here musicians, friends, and kindred spirits are at work. CD of the Month« (Toccata 1/10). The goal of this project is to record Veracini’s complete overtures and violin concertos and to combine them with a selection of his most interesting sonatas from the collection without opus number (1716) and his Opus 1 (1721). When these three groups of works are juxtaposed, Veracini’s various stylistic characters come into even clearer view. The succinct tutti passages and the virtuosic élan of the violin concertos meet the festive tone of the overtures, which frequently goes over into tones of greater exuberance and greater folk character, while in the sonatas chamber flexibility is articulated in which refinement and contrapuntal erudition find even clearer expression.

The ensemble of Alexander Zagorinsky, a Russian cellist, Honoured Artist of Russia and professor, and Einar Steen-Nøkleberg, a Norwegian pianist, two-time Grieg Prize winner and professor at the Norwegian Academy of Music, is well known to a wide range of music lovers. Each of the musicians has been an active solo performer for many years. Their albums have been released on major labels around the world, and this one is not their first joint project on Melodiya. The album includes solo performances of each of the musicians. So, Alexander Zagorinsky plays two cello concertos by Antonio Vivaldi, a great representative of the Italian Baroque school. The Red Priest wrote about thirty masterful cello concertos that are not inferior to his violin masterpieces. Einar Steen-Nøkleberg, who is best known for his romantic repertoire, has frequently turned to Bach’s works showcasing his refined sense of style and deep insight into the world of Baroque music. He performs three clavier concertos by the great Leipzig cantor.

During its peak popularity in the century from 1820, the art of transcription provided access in both the home and the concert hall to the riches of the symphonic and operatic repertoires through the conduit of the piano. Recorded as part of the 2018/2019 Piano Series at Turner Sims, Southampton, Alessandro Taverna celebrates a lost art that made great music available to the widest audience in an era before the first recordings and radio. Treated to a masterly re-imagining by Rachmaninov, Bach’s Third Violin Partita opens a recital that also showcases Taverna elegant virtuosity at the keyboard. A characteristically combustible re-working of themes from Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Liszt’s Réminiscences de Don Juan takes full advantage of the piano’s full orchestral range and sounds all the more remarkable in Taverna’s by turns poetic and powerful performance. Liszt’s transcriptions of three Schubert songs reveal his sensitivity to the originals and his appreciation of the piano’s ability to conjure fantasy to mesmeric effect, his ‘paraphrase’ of Verdi’s Rigoletto a miniature marvel for the piano.

When Yodit Tekle was diagnosed with stomach cancer in late 2014, her partner, Martin Anderson, who runs Toccata Classics, asked a few composer friends to write some music for strings to bring her comfort in her illness. As her life slipped away, he had the idea that she might be remembered in music and so he began to commission other pieces for string orchestra in her memory. To his surprise, almost everyone he asked generously agreed, and so the project snowballed: there are now over 100 composers who have now written or agreed to write for it – in an undertaking that is probably unique in the history of music. This third volume presents eleven more pieces in an initiative which, in effect, transforms love into something you can hear. Under the guidance of Paul Mann, who is co-ordinating this project as well as conducting it, the young players of the Ukrainian Festival really took this music to their hearts and produced performances of real intensity. Another point of interest: Yodit was from Eritrea, and so in these days when the classical world is worried that it might be appealing largely to a white, middle-class elderly male audience, here is a sequence of new classical works composed for a young black woman from north-east Africa.

Busoni’s transcriptions of Bach have long been one of the mainstays of the piano repertoire. Bach himself worshipped the music of the Danish- (or Swedish-) born Dieterich Buxtehude (1637–1707), famously walking 250 miles to Lübeck to hear him play. The Liszt student August Stradal (1860–1930) obviously shared that admiration, transcribing ten of Buxtehude’s most imposing organ works for piano, thus creating alongside ‘Bach-Busoni’ a corpus of grandiose – and virtuoso – Baroque music for the modern concert grand that has somehow remained almost entirely unknown. Meilin Ai studied for her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance with Joseph Banowetz at the University of North Texas and is now a full-time faculty member of the Conservatory of Music of the Sichuan Normal University in China.

Alexander Brincken, born in Leningrad in 1952 and Swiss-based since 1992, writes in an accessible and unashamedly late-Romantic language. His grandiose Fourth Symphony of 2014–15, written for a huge orchestra, has echoes of a number of earlier composers, among them Berlioz, Bruckner, Martinů, Wagner and, especially, Franz Schmidt and Richard Strauss, all assimilated into a big-hearted style that blends dignity, lyricism and power, with a strong sense of the Swiss landscapes in which he has made his home. The earlier Capriccio for piano and orchestra – a concerto in all but name – has, in turn, something of the sober strength and wiry energy of Frank Martin – curiously, since it was written seven years before Brincken moved to Switzerland. Rainer Held’s recent Sutermeister recording for Toccata Classics was a revelation, and here’s proofs that he has not yet run out of symphonic surprises.

Like hardly any other personality in music history, Harry Partch has freed himself from the constraints of musical conventions. He has not only left the beaten paths of the conservatories, but has also developed his own microtonal sound system, which he has captured in spectacularly beautiful, archaically wild yet angularly modern instruments that are indispensable for a live performance. Since 2013, Ensemble Musikfabrik has been the only ensemble in possession of a full set of replica Partch instruments. These are not used solely for the performance of Partch’s own music, however; through numerous commissions in the context of their project ‘pitch 43_tuning the cosmos’, they have inspired composers from all over the world to immerse themselves in these fantastical musical sculptures and their world of microtonal sounds. This CD presents three outstanding examples of the many and varied ways in which the Cologne-based ensemble has taken up Partch’s legacy: Sampo Haapamäki’s ‘Heritage’, ‘Wooden Clouds’ by Martin Smolka and’ Voices for Harry Partch’ by Carola Bauckholt. Manfred Trojahn was invited to the Villa Massimo in Rome in 1979/80 to work on his Second String Quartet, which had been commissioned by Radio France. What initially seemed like a golden opportunity for a young composer turned out to be a difficult period in Trojahn’s life, and this was reflected in the quartet, which moves restlessly between emotional outbursts, stasis, brusqueness, and moments of almost tender lyricism. The work documents a young composer’s search for an individual musical language in the early days of what we would now call the postmodern period. Manfred Trojahn was not interested in atonal dogma; the tonal relationships in his music reveal many sources of inspiration, including Romantic composers. ‘Hommage à L.v.B’. is an ironic tribute to the Classical tradition, while in ‘Abgesang’ [Farewell], Trojahn brings together diverse elements from earlier sections of the piece: restless fluttering motifs, elegiac cantilena passages, and bizarre clusters. To prepare this production of what is for him a very personal work, the composer worked closely with the Minguet Quartet, mezzo-soprano Tanja Ariane Baumgartner, and clarinetist Thorsten Johanns. The fruits of their efforts can be heard in this impressive recording.

Erwin Schulhoff saw no contradiction between the worlds of Dada and dodecaphony. As one of the most stylistically ‘multilingual’ composers of the early twentieth century, his output is unparalleled in its variety – a variety that is impressively displayed in this selection of piano music for two and four hands. Schulhoff’s ‘10 Klavierstücke’ from 1919 reflect the influence of Arnold Schoenberg and the Second Viennese School. The ‘Ironien’ for piano four-hands have the Dadaist, anti-establishment spirit of the great European cities of the 1920s. Though composed in free atonality, the cyclical ‘Musik für Klavier in vier Teilen’ from 1920 has many of the characteristics of a Baroque suite, while the miniature 11 Inventionen für Klavier’ from 1921 emphasize a broad spectrum of sound colors. Schulhoff explored classical form and tradition in his Piano Sonata No. 3 from 1927. Born in Prague in 1894, Schulhoff – the son of German-Jewish parents and a staunch Communist – died of pneumonia in a concentration camp and his music fell into obscurity. That makes this recording all the more important as a document of the dazzlingly varied output of this remarkable composer from the period between the two world wars.

Born in Pescara, in Abruzzi, Gabriele D’Annunzio (1863-1938) was a prominent figure of the Italian poetry at the turn of the 20thcentury. Before the Italian Unification in 1861, Abruzzi, just like Apulia, was part of the Kingdom of the two Sicilies with Naples as its capital. In Naples, where the memory of the Bourbons was still alive, in 1891 D’Annunzio met Niccolò van Westerhout (1857-1898), an Apulian composer born in Mola di Bari. The long and tormented life of D’Annunzio meets Apulia through the numerous encounters with Apulian composers who setmany of his lyrics to music. This discographic projects ideally keeps this past bond alive by offering contemporary Apulian composers the opportunity to set lyrics and texts by D’Annunzio to music. Seventeenth issue of the aforementioned collection of Greeting Cards op. 170 is the Ricercare sul nome di Luigi Dallapiccola, another of the dearest friends and colleagues of Castelnuovo-Tedesco, with whom, even at a great distance, the human and spiritual correspondence was interrupted only by the death of Mario. “Gigino,” defined “my old friend, and musician for whom I have the highest consideration,” was the dedicatee of this work, of which the author was proud as the best of all his ‘Pezzi Alfabetici’ and which was printed by the Florentine publisher Forlivesi in 1959. Preceded by the illustration of two musical transpositions of the letters of the alphabet (one with chromatically ascending notes, the other descending) and identified the corresponding ‘musical mottos’ forming the name and surname of the dedicatee, Castelnuovo-Tedesco builds a Prelude, a Fanfare and a monumental Fugue on these melodic cells, creating a contrapuntal structure of great complexity and expressive variety, as well as of considerable instrumental commitment.

The sonatas on this CD (except K311, this sonata was written in Mannheim) were composed in Munich as part of a cycle encompassing six sonatas. Mozart found himself in the Bavarian capital over the winter of 1774-1775 to produce his opera La finta giardiniera. The degree of imagination that Mozart, as a youth of 18 or 19, drew upon in his approach to the sonata genre is truly astounding. Each of these works – which based on their extensive virtuoso demands were presumably written for his own use – offers an individual and profoundly original solution to the specific problems of the genre, and if the young composer perhaps lacks something in his mastery of the form compared with his later works, it is well compensated for by his sheer wealth of imagination. What is more, we read in Mozart’s correspondence that he repeatedly performed the works himself from memory, which was not a given in those days.

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy was born in Hamburg in 1809 and died in Leipzig at the age of 38. He was very early musically gifted. Mendelssohn performed in public at the age of 9 and composed already from the age of 11. As a pupil of Friedrich Zelter, who was a friend of Goethe, Mendelssohn composed at the age of 17 his first masterpiece: the Overture to the Midsummer Night’s Dream. This is included in the extensive CD box as well as a large number of other known or less known pieces by him. The String Quartet in F Minor Op. 80 - written in memory of his beloved sister Fanny - which was recorded in this collection by the Aurora String Quartet is undoubtedly one of his most beautiful works. Beethoven’s piano output alone is enormous and arguably the greatest collection of all, and surely its most remarkable feature is the sheer variety of expression. Among the 32 Sonatas you will not find two that are similar; and in the 20 sets of Variations one marvels at the range and inspiration of his vision and imagination. Indeed, he was a rebel and he defined the course of classical music probably more than any other composer. He travelled fast and far, from the influence of Haydn and Mozart in his early works to his own idiomatic language of the middle period works and, finally, reached heights of great spiritual depth in the last 10 years or so. The works are presented in chronological order, but there are many instances where scholars cannot pin down the precise time of composition. Also, in a few cases, strict chronology is deliberately ignored so that on each CD the order offers more attractive listening’.

Born from a meeting that happened between Philip Glass and flutist James Strauss in 2011, Venezuelan Elegy is a celebration of music, of collaboration, and the triumph of the artistic sprit while the tragedy of world events as they unfold around artists creating it. When meeting Strauss in 2011, Glass encouraged him to arrange his music for flute and chamber orchestra. Despite being a flutist by training, and playing flute himself until the age of 30, Glass has not written extensively for “his” instrument. For Strauss, this has always been a frustrating situation since he wanted to perform Glass’s music with orchestras. So Strauss set about arranging Glass’s music for flute an ensemble including two major works: a large suite from Glass’s opera Orphée, Glass’s Violin Concerto No. 1, as well as selections from Metamorphosis, The Hours, and Glassworks. Despite the title, Venezuelan Elegy is not a somber album at all. It’s a boisterous celebration of music and life. Glass spent many summers in South America and not a year has gone by that he doesn’t visit. Starting in 2016, Strauss moved to Venezuela right at the time that political troubles were coming to a head. He had great collaborations with the young musicians who are still emerging from the El Sistema music program there.

The instruments in a woodwind quartet usually have different ranges that allow for rich harmonies with high and low tones. Since these four instruments are from different subgroups of the instrument family, wind quartet music has timbral variety from each instrument’s resonance.

Swarowsky began his conducting career at the Stuttgart Opera in 1927, this after a short period as a répétiteur at the Vienna Volksoper. He then moved on to Hamburg and succeeded Erich Kleiber in Berlin. He was placed under a conducting ban in Germany in 1936 (his father´s side of the family was of Jewish background) but was able to continue his career in Zurich for a few years. During World War II he had to limit his work to opera assignments for the Bavarian State Opera and the Salzburg Festival. He was the director of the Polish Philharmonic in Cracow for a short time in 1944 and became the principal conductor of the Vienna Symphony after the war. He also served as the director of the Graz Opera until 1950 and as the conductor of the Scottish National Orchestra from 1957 to 1959. Herbert von Karajan then appointed him to a permanent conducting post at the Vienna State Opera. Swarowsky had taught a conducting class at the Vienna Music Academy since 1946 and left a mark on a good many younger musicians, among them conducting stars such as Claudio Abbado and Zubin Mehta.

Anton S. Arensky was born in Novgorod on 12 July 1861 and spent his boyhood years in a comfortable family setting conductive to the early detection and encouragement of his extraordinary musical talent. His father, a physician, was an avid cellist, and his mother was an excellent pianist. Arensky was already composing songs and piano pieces at the age of nine and began his studies at the St. Petersburg Conservatory in 1879. Rimsky-Korsakov, a firm advocate of Russian School and the artistic rival of Tchaikovsky (who was ostracized as a Westernizer) was his composition teacher. Arensky passed the final conservatory examination with distinction three years later and immediately received a professorship at the Moscow Conservatory. Among his pupils were Rachmaninov and Scriabin, both much better known today than their teacher. In Moscow Arensky came under Tchaikovsky´s influence and emerged as a composer of Western stamp.

This time the music was created during mere hours over the course of a few evenings. There is a magic in the moment when improvising that I’ve found difficult to recreate afterwards. ‘A Better Place’ consists mostly of written down improvisations and then recorded with the trio without further processing. I think one tends to make better musical decisions on the spot, instead of at the desk where time is unlimited’.

Ellas Kapell was formed in the fall of 2016. Sharing an enthusiastic view on the great musical catalogue of Ella Fitzgerald, the band found its moniker and initial repertoire. The repertoire has since expanded beyond the limits of Ella’s songbook, but the band name remains. In 2018 the band started working on its upcoming debut album, Longing. Each band member chose their select few favorite jazz standards and expanded on their thematic and symbolic contents. Clad in new arrangements, the compositions retain their original core, but make bold excursions to modern, daring and personal realms. Addressed topics include rejection, abandonment, romance in the autumn of life, obsession and longing for the past. Some of the interpretations remain simple, carried only by the fragility of lyrics and harmony, while others make room for virtuosity and playfulness. Four of the tracks include guest musician Klas Lindquist on saxophone/clarinet.

Icelandic pianist Anna Gréta Sigurðardóttir moved to Stockholm in 2014. The following year, she and Stockholm-based guitarist Max Schultz met while playing with Håkan Broström‘s big band, New Places Orchestra. Discovering their mutual interest in the acoustic duo format of a nylon stringed guitar and acoustic piano, they started playing their original songs together. The duo’s acoustic sound at the center, they expanded the setting to a quintet, featuring Joakim Milder on the saxophone, and as co-producer, Magnus Gran on the drums, Christian Spering on the double bass. Sound engineer Åke Linton joined Anna Gréta and Max, and in February 2019, they recorded 10 songs in the Svenska Grammofonstudion in Gothenburg. Deciding to add the flavors of a string quartet, Anna Gréta and Max wrote string arrangements that were recorded by Sjöströmska kvartetten (Samuel Runsteen violin, Annie Svedlund violin, Märta Eriksson viola, Lisa Reuter, cello). This album was mixed in Gothenburg by Anna Gréta and Max together with Åke Linton, who proved to be not only a fantastic sound engineer but also a talented producer with many great ideas about the music.

Flauto Brillante is a record filled with flute music of Romantic composers (Johann Nepomuk Hummel, Anton Reicha, Friedrich Kuhlau, Carl Maria von Weber) performed in a breathtaking manner by Magdalena Pilch (Romantic traverso flute), Marek Pilch (square piano) and Bartosz Kokosza (cello) – artists who specialise in performing early music. The title of the record emphasises the role of the flute in the repertoire, while at the same time makes references to the brillante style, which developed in piano music in the first half of the 19th century. Its distinguishable features can be found in the works presented on this record, which are full of masterly figurations and passages. The album was recorded on the replicas of historical instruments: a transverse flute (Wilhelm Liebel, Dresden c. 1830), a cello (Antonio Stradivari, Cremona 1701) and a square piano, renovated for the needs of this recording (Pehr Rosenwall, Stockholm c. 1840).

LeeMeet Trio was awarded with getting to the finals of prestigious competition Jazz Juniors in Krakov, as chosen among 47 bands.

Within this new album the Armonia delle Sfere ensemble is delivering to us the complete Produzioni Armoniche by Antonia Bembo, a collection of fourty one motets dedicated in 1701 to Louis XIV, the Roi Soleil, to whose court she landed after a series of vicissitudes occurred in Venice, her hometown, including the failure of a marriage and important family disputes, for which she was deprived of his paternal inheritance. After being trained under the musical guidance of Francesco Cavalli (1602-1676), organist of the ducal chapel of San Marco, Antonia secretly married Lorenzo Bembo, a Venetian nobleman, from whom she had two children, and from whom in 1672 she herself asked divorce, due to the continuing absence of her husband, whom she also accused of continuing abuse and betrayal. She then moved to Paris, perhaps following the guitarist Francesco Corbetta, where she concentrated on music and composition, and where she had the opportunity to perform in the presence of Louis XIV, at the court of which she would find acceptance and protection until the end of her life. It is the fascinating story of a strong personality that sought and found a way to oVercome the difficult conditions of a seventeenth century female artist.

Uri Caine took the piano works from Beethoven and composed 33 variations after the waltz from Diabelli for orchestra and piano especially written for the famous German Baroque Orchestra, Concerto Köln. Each variations seems to be a new chorus like in the traditional style of jazz performances. This adaption is a new analysis of classical music by Uri Caine who has re-composed previously the music of Gustav Mahler, Richard Wagner, Robert Schumann and Johann Sebastian Bach. Caine finds a new natural way to build a synthesis with classical music from the past and contemporary jazz.

In 2018, the ‘‘Golden Gallery’’ of the Central Bank of France, and more precisely its renovation in the style of the 18th century by the Count of Toulouse, celebrated its tri-centenary. Like the Hall of Mirrors at the Château de Versailles, it counts among the most lavish ceremonial galleries of France: it was in this glorious setting that several scenes of the movie Marie-Antoinette, by Sofia Coppola, were shot. On this occasion, the baroque ensemble ‘‘Concert de la Loge’’ and its musical director Julien Chauvin drew upon this incredible setting, its paintings and its sculptures but also its history, and brought together various pieces from the baroque and classical repertoire : Lully, Rameau, Couperin, Boccherini, Charpentier, Vivaldi, Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Handel… Thanks to an elaborate scenography and to a smart lighting design, the program is also a journey through the mysteries of the visual works displayed in the gallery: for instance the allegories of the young Louis XIV at the beginning of his reign, the story of Henry IV... all of which is explained at length in a gorgeous booklet written by art specialists.
