Here’s Our Response to this Issue’s Apologetics IQ TestQUESTION: Christians claim that Jesus was born of a virgin. But that’s scientifically impossible! Why would anyone be so naive as to accept the claims of an old religious book over hard science?

ANSWER: It may surprise you to learn that with the advent of embryonic transfer, in vitro fertilization, stem cell genetics, and other new developments, a virgin birth (see parthenogenesis) is now considered to be at least theo-retically, technically, scientifically possible. In fact it always has been possible for a female to become pregnant (by seminal fluid) without actual sexual intercourse having occurred, as reproductive health officials often try to make clear. But of course the biblical account of the conception and birth of Jesus refers to much more than a mere human event. The angel Gabriel told Mary: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy — the Son of God.” Does that strike you as “unscientific?” Or at least supernatural and miraculous? It was. But miracles happen. And this would have actually been a fairly ‘small’ miracle for a God who created the entire universe. Centuries before Jesus was born God’s prophets had predicted that, when He came, the Messiah would be born of a virgin. The fact that those prophecies came true is one of many evidences that the Bible is certainly not just “an old religious book,” but the Word of God.

Here are Tim and Amy with (left to right) Malachi, Kaylee, and Logan. They live in Linneus, Maine (Aroostook County), where Tim works as Materials Manager for the Louisiana-Pacific company and Amy is an Occupational Therapist. Tim is also a registered Maine Guide. He typically leads a few wilderness trips each summer for family and other groups on Maine’s waterways (such as the Allagash).

So here come the holidays and more cold weather. I recallthe mad rush that I encountered at the mall some years ago.I was being pushed along by the crowd. Turning to a lady nearby, I said, "Have you ever seen such chaos?" She said, "There's a reason for it, buddy. You're in the ladies' room!"

Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas to all. We’re al-ready anticipating meeting with you in the brand new year.
