For 98 years, Girl Scouting has been a forward-thinking organization intent on imparting to girls the wisdom and tools they need to access the widest range of opportunities. Within a safe and nurturing environment, girls explore and acquire practical skills, broaden their cultural horizons, and use newly discovered leadership skills to improve the world in ways both small and large.

In 2009, Girl Scouts of Ohio’s Heartland moved forward on many fronts to improve our delivery of service and provide a wealth of program and leadership development opportunities for our 35,000 girls and 10,000 adult volunteers. With improvements to our infrastructure and more efficient use of our resources, we expanded our capacity to extend the Girl Scout experience to more girls, with the goal of reaching all who wish to participate. By recruiting, supporting and retaining excellent adult leaders, we are ensuring that our girls will have shining examples of courage, confidence and character to show them the way. These leaders make our programs come to life and help girls develop strong values, which guide their decision making and life choices.

Please enjoy the enclosed stories of our girls and leaders in action, knowing that we have our donors, community collaborators, friends, families and volunteers to thank for their contributions to such great successes. Together with you, our valued supporters, we will continue engaging volunteers and strengthening girls.

Yours in Girl Scouting,

Suzy Swanson TammyH.WhartonPresident and Chair of the Board of Directors Chief Executive Officer

Annual Meeting 2009Thousands of volunteers give their time and skills and outpour their devotion for girls every day in Girl Scouting. At our annual meeting, GSOH recognized outstanding volunteers who went above and beyond expectations. Also honored was troop leader Tamara Brennan. Tamara was a bus driver for Maysville City School District near Zanesville. She calmly evacuated her bus full of students after detecting a fire. What started out as a small flame around the tire consumed the entire bus in only 10 minutes! GSOH celebrated her quick thinking and unselfish commitment to others by naming her as a Hometown Hero.

Keep the Promise 2009!On my honor...

The third annual Keep the Promise Leadership Conference and Recognition Luncheon was held at the Ohio Historical Society on Tuesday, April 21, 2009. A total of 123 girls attended this empowering event, at which 19 presenters conducted workshops on topics from the college experience and financial literacy, to business etiquette and diverse leadership styles.

At the luncheon, the girls and other guests heard from Mariah Hake and Amber Nowell about the paths they followed to earn the Girl Scout Silver and Gold Awards, the highest awards a Girl Scout can receive. Guest speakers Elfi DiBella and Mary Jo Hudson conveyed their admiration for the skills and strengths girls gain from the program that Girl Scouting delivers.

In the afternoon, the participants made the rounds of 27 career and college fair booths offering information to help them envision their future education and work life.

Echoing the service that is the hallmark of the Gold and Silver Awards, the girls completed three community service projects to round out the day. For LifeCare Alliance, one group made tray favors for the recipients of Meals on Wheels. A second group cut blanket squares for the personalized blankets donated by My Very Own Blanket to children in foster care. The third group assembled activity packets and created posters for children staying at Nationwide Children's Hospital.

In 2009 Ohio’s Heartland Council was proud to have 34 girls attain the Girl Scout Gold Award. On June 28, in a ceremony at Limited Brands, we proudly presented 26 in attendance with their Gold Award pins. The late Bobbie Ruch spoke, imparting to each girl inspiring words of wisdom. These young women called upon the leadership, organizational, and networking skills gained in Girl Scouting to envision and implement projects which will have a lasting impact on their communities. We thank all of the parents and mentors who have guided each of these outstanding young women.

We celebrate their achievements, confident that they will remain committed to a lifetime of service.

The TRuTh cAn SeT TheM FRee: Girl Trafficking Awareness

Dakota Thorn of New Concord earned her Gold Award for a project entitled, Remember Nhu. Through speaking engagements, fliers, postcards and e-mails, Dakota’s project brought awareness to more than 565 people about the injustice of the trafficking of girls throughout the globe. Dakota collected personal care items and clothing to send to safe houses in Thailand and Cambodia established by the foundation. She also made blankets for the girls at one of the homes. She obtained support from her church and her youth group, and recruited a Girl Scout Troop to continue her project. In her words, “It is so crucial to tell these girls in the safe houses that there are people willing to help them and make others aware of their needs.”

In October 2009, Girl Scouts of Ohio’s Heartland celebrated the 15th anniversary of our life-changing program, Bonds Beyond Bars. Attorney Patsy Thomas stated, “the Bonds program…gives the girls and moms extra time to bond and believe in their dreams.”

One mother stated, “I have been incarcerated for 10 years, and would have missed out on my daughter’s life if it wasn’t for the Girl Scouts Bonds Beyond Bars program. Girl Scouts Bonds Beyond Bars has made my daughter a leader.”

Her daughter says, “My mom and I would not be as close if it wasn’t for Girl Scouts…I plan on giving back to the Girl Scouts Bonds Beyond Bars program by becoming a volunteer to help those who need it like my mom and I did.”

We look forward to the future and our continued efforts to reinforce the bonds between girls and the mothers who love them. In the words of Patsy Thomas, “The girls’ and moms’ current situation does not define where they will end up in life.”

For eight months, Girl Scout Daisy Troop #406 in Jackson and Junior Troop #515 in Gallipolis worked together to provide the comfort of head scarves to cancer patients in southeast Ohio.

The leaders of Troop #406, Heidi Bowman and Deanna Bragg learned of the need, then asked the girls if they wanted to tackle the project. The girls jumped at the opportunity to help. After receiving donations of fabric and thread, the girls learned to cut and sew the scarves, and created cards to attach to each one. Perhaps most touching, the first scarf recipient was a Girl Scout volunteer. In all, the troop delivered 515 scarves on Make A Difference Day to hospitals in Chillicothe, Jackson, Athens, Portsmouth and Gallipolis.

For their service, the troops received the Make a Difference Day Ohio Outstanding Project Award, as one of 10 recipients out of 650 nominations statewide.

In October 2009, at Wilson Hill Elementary School in Worthington, several Girl Scout troops wore pink to show support for breast cancer awareness month.

Action! Troops Work Together to Make a Difference

The Spazbotz LEGO Robotics team consisiting of seven girls, ages 9-14 competed in the Smart Moves Regional Competition at Columbus State Community College on December 12, 2009. The girls placed 5th with their robot challenge and 1st place with their research project!

Debbie Winn is the epitome of volunteer engagement. When she became the Olentangy service unit manager in 2005 after four years as a troop leader, she took over what would become the council’s largest service unit, with more than 1,430 girls and nearly 700 volunteer leaders.

Her service unit performs a constant stream of community service projects, including Service from the Heart, where each month, they identify a different group and work to help meet their needs. Since 2007, there have been more than 100 beneficiaries such as the YWCA Family Center, The Humane Society of Delaware County and Delaware County Children’s Services.

They’ve also performed service projects for people in South America, Cuba, and Haiti, where they sent three vans full of medical supplies to earthquake victims.

Debbie is leader of a seven-member troop of eighth graders, and is a planner and presenter for the council’s service unit manager training sessions, has developed a recruitment presentation and video, created a service unit Web site, and has championed doing as much as

possible electronically to conserve resources. She also has spearheaded World Thinking Day events for more than 1,300 girls.

“I do it because I love Girl Scouts and I love the girls,” she says. “I have an extremely deep faith and I believe I have a responsibility to mentor young girls and bring them up with the right values to become women of excellence through Girl Scouting. I’ve watched leaders grow too, as well as myself. I have a wonderful team of incredible leaders and I couldn’t do it without my team!”

Debbie’s busy life also is filled with a husband, three children, and a full-time, home-based business. She also was a Girl Scout for six years when growing up.

Field Executive Rebecca Scott says, “Debbie is an exemplary volunteer who truly shines ‘green’ throughout Central Ohio Counties and across the globe. Her conception and dream of Service from the Heart has made our world a brighter place. The values imparted with the leadership of Debbie Winn are golden and will live for generations to come!”

On April 10, 2009, a powerful F4 tornado blew through Murfreesboro, Tennessee, leaving a 23-mile path of destruction after being on the ground for 36 minutes. It destroyed or damaged more than 800 businesses and homes, causing more than $41 billion dollars in damages. Fifty-one people were injured and two people were killed.

Heath, Ohio Girl Scout Daisy Troop #1170 is a sister troop to Murfreesboro Troop #868 through two sisters who are Girl Scout Troop Leaders, Tyna Doran of Heath and Trisha Leija of Murfreesboro. Thankfully, no Girl Scouts in the Murfreesboro sister troop suffered any damage.

Unfortunately, the home of the George family was in the direct path of the tornado and mother Cathy, father Mark and sons John and Christopher were all at home when the tornado came through. Family friends of Trisha Leija, they lost their home, so the Girl Scout Daisy troop of Heath decided to collect items to help them. Heath Girl Scout Troops #520 and #60016 also donated items.

A drop-off day was held in May at the State Farm Insurance building in Newark, and enough items were collected that the co-leaders rented a moving truck to transport them to the family on June 9, 2009.

Through this experience, the girls have learned valuable lessons about tornado safety, the wide-reaching sisterhood of Girl Scouts and the idea that their community extends beyond neighborhood and even statewide boundaries. Thank you to leaders Tyna Doran, Kimberly Parker and Laurie Kugel; girls Abigail Doran, Allison Parker, Christina Kugel, Lilly Clayton, Kelsi Green, Katie Johnson, Allie Morgan, Kelsey Wilson, Caylie Hite, Maddy Cline; and leader-in-training, Sarah Predmore.

Family Partnership is our annual giving program which gives Girl Scout families the opportunity to support the organization that helps their daughters grow strong. Through their generous gifts to Family Partnership, our Girl Scout families helped support local programs and kept services affordable for Girl Scouts in your community. The donations from 175 GSOH families helped supply opportunities for leadership development and personal growth for more than 35,000 girls throughout central and southeastern Ohio. Family Partnership donors are identified by the ♥ on our donor list. Thank you to our Girl Scout families!

Make new Friends, but Keep the Old... Were you a Girl Scout? Perhaps you loved camp and fondly remember making your first sit-upon or friendship

stick; maybe earning badges and traveling on a Wider Opportunity or destination helped you explore new interests. It might be that you are still friends with the sister Girl Scout you met fifty years ago; or possibly you discovered a passion while in Girl Scouts that led you to your current major in college. Whatever your connection to Girl Scouts, we want to hear from you. Please consider joining our Alumnae Association. As we approach the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouting in 2012, we are looking for all current and former members to join together in celebration, and it just won’t be a party without YOU.
