A Christmas Package for the Quarantined Faithful
O Wisdom, who proceeds from the mouth of the Most High,
reaching out mightily from end to end, and sweetly arranging all things,
come to teach us the way of peace. (Advent O Antiphon)
Its funny how time gives a different perspective on things. When the first notice
came down in March for our country’s two week quarantine, I took it as a challenge:
“Let me see how long I can go without leaving to buy groceries.” I said. Living as a
Carmelite hermit, to stay in place was not difficult . Working from home already, I
was able to survive on the food I had on hand. But many of you are not as lucky. I
understand it is a struggle for many who have lost their jobs or for parents to home-
school their children and maintain their jobs at the same time. What to do?
Many friends have told me about The Surrender Novena, written by an Italian
priest, Fr. Dolindo Ruotolo, where each of the daily prayers end with these words:
O Jesus, I surrender myself to You, take care of everything!
Friends tell me that it has had a
profound effect on the way they
live, for it helped them to find
peace in spite of the stresses that
the Covid pandemic imposed upon
them. Look it up on the internet
where you can easily print it out.
Using this for prayer for nine days
will help you to trust the Lord dur-
ing this stressful time. Think of Joseph and Mary as they fled into Egypt to es-
cape danger. Do you think they needed to trust in the Father for each day’s
needs? Yes! Are we not children of God through our Baptism? Our heavenly Father
wants to gift each of us with peace. “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by
prayer and petition….present your requests to God.” Phil.4:7 If you like, send me your
petitions, and I will join you in prayer for your needs to be met and also for peace
of mind and heart as you live your lives during this difficult time.

An Advent Novena prayer to help you
prepare your heart for Christmas.
December 16 - 24
Jesus, you are the Radiant Dawn of our Sal-
vation. You leapt from eternity to time with-
in the womb of Mary your mother. Intervene
with your grace and bring an end to this pan-
demic, heal those who are ill, protect and
strengthen all healthcare workers, and bring
eternal rest for those who have died. Jesus,
thank you for hearing and answering all our
special intentions (name them here).
Amen
Now that I have been seven years at this new location, I
am re-evaluating my situation. I have decided to close
the liturgical vestment business as of January 1st,
2021. For 37 years I have been happy to serve the
Church in this way, but I believe that it is time to step
down. It has been wonderful to meet the priests, dea-
cons and others who have come to place orders. I have
loved being able to contribute
to the beauty of the Divine Lit-
urgy in our Church. To be sure,
the style of vestments have
changed over those many
years and I enjoyed the chal-
lenges. I will continue making
miscellaneous craft items such
as cards and tote bags which
can be sold in local gift shops.
Returning to watercolor paint-
ing is also on my “to-do” list.
The Hermitage Arts website will continue to be one place
where you can purchase all my notecards, as well as
Sympathy and Christmas cards. In this way you can con-
tinue your support for the Hermitage. Thank you!
I’m thinking of you as this strange year comes to a
close and I pray that this coming New Year will
bring you good health and peace! Even if this Christ-
mas may not be celebrated as it usually is, nothing
can prevent us from adoring Christ in our hearts.
Let us make some return to the God who humbled
himself for us: Adoration, Joy, Gratitude and Love.
With gratitude for your friendship and love, Christmas
Blessings from Sr. Kristine Haugen, Hermit of Mt. Carmel
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition,
with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of
God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts
and your minds in Christ Jesus.
