5th May 2016
Dear Parents and Guardians,
WOWZER! Now how is that for an opening statement in this week’s E-Newsletter?!
Many congratulations to Leicester City Football Club on achieving the unthinkable: the dream
has been fulfilled! We are immensely proud of this extraordinary achievement, of global
noteworthiness, given our very close association with LCFC through our unique Thai Football
Scholars’ Project. What a great moment in the history of our city and county.
Now to matters more serious (but perhaps only from a philosophical point of view!):
I hope that you enjoyed the Bank Holiday weekend, and found time to ‘restore your
batteries’. Following the sports fixtures on Saturday, our Boarding Community appreciated a
wide range of activities organised by the Boarding Staff, while our CCF RAF cadets took to the
skies for a weekend of leadership training.
Numerous trips have taken place: Year 3 to the Botanical Gardens at the University of Leicester,
Year 4 to Grace Dieu Manor Retreat for their Collegiate Retreat, our New Zealand Exchange
students to an exhilarating experience at Alton Towers, and Year 10 Duke of Edinburgh’s Award
students to assist in the community at Primrose Lodge, to name but a few. My sincere thanks go
to all the Staff who made these trips possible and so memorable.
Alongside all the above, many students have been engaged in public examinations: Art, Design &
Technology, Drama, Modern Foreign Languages and PE, and we wish them and all others the
very best. Thank you for your on-going support. This evening’s ‘Coping with Stress’ workshop
for Boarders, together with the Life Education workshops in the Preparatory School and the
Parent Café presentation on emotional well-being 4.30-6.00pm, Tuesday 10th May (Old Library)
are all designed to support our students and parents in an ever increasingly complex and
pressurising world.
Wishing you and your family a very happy, healthy and blessed week ahead,
Yours sincerely,
Gareth P. Lloyd,
Headmaster.

European Band Championship in Lille
Emilia Lawden, Year 12, had a fantastic weekend, last weekend, in Lille, where her band were
runners-up in the European Championship, beaten by one mark by a much older band from
Belgium. The same result as last year, but they were beaten by a wider margin last year, and
there were more countries competing this year. One of the horn players in Youth Brass also won
the Best Soloist award.
Results of the European Debate last Thursday:
38 % of Ratcliffe students voted ‘out’;
62% of Ratcliffe students voted ‘in’.
New Zealand Exchange
Last week, saw the return visit of the New Zealand Exchange students from St Peter’s Gore, and
yesterday saw their departure, when tears were shed from both parties. The students have been
a pleasure to have in school and have really fitted in to the Ratcliffe community. Host families
have enjoyed their company, and have welcomed the St Peter’s students into their homes.
After a busy few days in Italy and London for the St Peter’s students, they arrived at Ratcliffe on
Friday 22nd April. The first Sunday of their stay, we hosted a BBQ and rounders in the school
grounds, before heading to the King Power stadium where Leicester City FC were hosting
Swansea City. And what a game that was! A 4-0 victory and an electric atmosphere made for a
great experience for all.

Following the excitement, and a weekend settling in with their host families, they spent time in
school. The St Peter’s students attended lessons with their hosts, and experienced Ratcliffe
College school life. For the St Peter’s Gore students, it was a great opportunity to understand the
origins of their own school, as the founders of St Peter’s were from the Rosminian order here at
Ratcliffe.
During the bank holiday weekend, students and their families organised their own family trips.
A fun visit was enjoyed by all to Alton Towers, a new experience for the students from St Peter’s
as they do not have any theme parks near them. It truly was a fantastic experience, and I know
the Ratcliffe students are looking forward to their return leg in October 2017.
A thank you must go to all parents, students and staff who were so kind and welcoming to all the
students involved.

CHAPLAINCY
HCPT Lourdes Pilgrimage
This summer, ten Year 12 students are joining the Hosanna House and Children’s Pilgrimage Trust (HCPT) pilgrimage to Lourdes, as helpers. They will be assisting sick and disabled pilgrims who would be unable to travel and fully participate in the experience without caring volunteers. Each student has been asked to fundraise towards the trust. Tilly Wheeler, Emily Sellicks and Christian Waters helped in organising a Coffee Morning in the Easter holidays: baking, delivering flyers and selling raffle tickets. Many thanks go to the mums who rolled up their sleeves to help. Thanks to the students, parents, and friends who supported them, they raised over £1000, so very well done!
The James Wilson Friendship Prize 2016
Over the next couple of weeks, students will be asked to nominate a friend for
The James Wilson Friendship Prize 2016. This prize was donated by an Old Ratcliffian
in memory of James Wilson, his faithful school friend who stood by him through thick and thin.
This is an opportunity to give recognition to someone who has displayed the true qualities of
friendship. Students are asked to nominate, and the winner of the prize will be chosen on the
strength of the comments written about him/her. We would ask Years 11-13 to consider
the prize before going on study leave.
A true friend is …
someone who is honest
someone you trust
someone who is friendly to everyone, not just their own friendship group
someone who would rather listen than be heard
someone who shows friendship at times when it is needed most
To propose someone, please ask your tutor, or Mrs Waters, for a nomination slip. Complete
the slip, stating who you would like to nominate and why. Return it to your tutor or hand it in
at the staffroom for Father Ted’s seed tray.

SPORT Senior School Report as presented at Assembly on Tuesday 3rd May:
Cricket
1st XI
The 1st XI had two games this week. Against the MCC on Thursday, the boys had the better of the match. Tight bowling and energetic fielding restricted the MCC to 87 – 4 at lunch. Sadly, with the School well positioned to press home their advantage, the rain arrived and curtailed any further play.
On Saturday, against King Henry’s, the team could sadly not maintain their level of performance in the field. Although the bowling remained tight, the fielding, which started impressively, became increasingly lackadaisical, allowing the opposition to post a challenging total of 227 from 40 overs. After the loss of the top order, Ratcliffe rarely looked like challenging. Men of the Match, Ben Pole and Toby Snell, fought hard to keep the chase going, but ultimately Ratcliffe fell short, at 163 all out.
2nd XI
The 2nd XI game with Gateway mid-week could have gone either way, but came down to a battle between the two captains. The visiting captain was very confident, but Kasey Newby, keeping the coin concealed for as long as possible, and spinning it viciously, outwitted his opposite number – a dramatic victory in the first action of the season. Unfortunately, from that point, the rain took over and no further play was possible.
On Saturday, despite a solid bowling and fielding performance which restricted King Henry’s 2nd XI to 83 runs, Ratcliffe fell short with a disappointing batting display. Only Man of the Match and Captain, Newby, really applied himself, showing how easy batting could be on a slow, low wicket. The most significant moment of the game was the fall of his wicket with 3 overs to go, chasing an unlikely victory.
U15
A depleted U15s did well to restrict King Henry’s to 109 for 5, with George Morgan-Jones the pick of the bowlers with 2 for 15. When batting, Ratcliffe struggled on a slow wicket, and four run-outs did not help the cause. Matthew Lindley batted well for 22 before running himself out. We were bowled out for 51 to lose by 58 runs. George Morgan-Jones for his bowling and Matthew Lindley for his batting were Men of the Match.
U14
The U14s earned their first win of the season by 58 runs, with a very impressive display with the ball. After losing the toss, Ratcliffe were put into bat, and made an impressive 109 from their 20 overs on a difficult wicket. Top scorer and joint Man of the Match, Oliver Welch, made 34, while Dominic McKaig made 22. With the ball, Ratcliffe dominated from the start, with joint Man of the Match, Carter Walker, claiming 2 vital wickets with his first 2 balls. Ratcliffe eventually bowled out King Henry’s in the last over for a modest 51.
U13
The U13s recorded their first win of the season against King Henry’s. Batting first, King Henry’s scored quickly and it was only the success of the bowlers in the middle overs that restricted them to what we thought would be a reachable 108 for 4. However, Players of the Match, and opening batsman, Captain, Aled King and Fin Back, made their total look below par in the end. After last week’s impressive knock of 68, Fin followed this up with a not-out half-century (56). Aled, looking for some confidence, soon got in to his stride and finished on 39 not-out, helping us knock the runs off in the thirteenth over. This was a very confident performance and will give the team confidence going into the games ahead.
U12
After a disappointing start last week, the U12s responded in style with an emphatic 58-run win over King Henry’s. Batting first, the tone was set from the off with Guy Heywood (36) and Jacob Storey helping themselves to a flurry of early boundaries. Jacob reached his 50 (retired) in good time, bringing Joe Davies to the crease. With the help of Hugo Ziff (10 not-out), Joe displayed an impressive innings of power hitting to bring up his own 50 (retired) in no time at all. The first innings finished at 172 – 2 after the 20 overs. The impressive performance continued in the second-half, with Henry Coombs taking an early wicket, backed up by some
tight bowling from Ben Ashford. Despite a couple of drop catches, Ratcliffe were able to control the game, and cruise to an easy victory. Man of the Match goes to Jacob Storey for getting the team off to the best possible start.
Fencing
Well done to Fin Noble who competed in the Young Hoskyn’s Fencing Competition in Kidderminster last week. He finished 8th out of 22 competitors, losing 10 – 9 in the quarter-final. After this match the organisers took Fin to one side and presented him with the Sportsmanship Award. This was because he noticed and reported that one of his fight scores had been recorded incorrectly awarding the match to him, when he had in fact lost it 4 – 5. This would have had a major implication on the way in which the rest of the tournament would have panned out. This award is not something that is given out regularly, and is reserved for true acts of honesty and sportsmanship. Well done, Fin.
Jake Kirkby came 2nd in the boys’ 13-15 years Kumite National Karate Competition and 2nd in the regional team competition at the weekend. Sam Nightingale, Boys’ Sports Captain
Jade England, Year 9, was part of a team of 4 riders who won the British Riding Club Winter
Championships Junior Intermediate Show-jumping competition. The team qualified after
winning the regional competition earlier this year, and they went on to win the championships
this weekend with a perfect score of 0, with all 4 riders jumping double clears round a
challenging championship course. They won an engraved silver trophy, various prizes and were
interviewed by the British Riding Club, and Horse & Hound magazine – an amazing experience.
