A significant element to our success is the SchoolImprovement Agenda, which is used to focus staff andadministration on certain areas of our school at the beginning ofeach year. In 2019, our priorities include Engagement, Writingand Feedback. It is this kind of professional reflection, actionand assessment ‘behind the scenes’, which continuouslypropels Mansfield SHS from great to superb!

As recently as last week the news of our incredible success andunwavering commitment to excellence was showcased in thelocal papers and Channel 9, espousing Mansfield SHS as oneof the top performing high schools in Brisbane academically. This comes as no surprise to me: our students and staff areexceptional! However, this kind of attention has ensured thatour enrolments continue to climb towards 2800 students. Atlast count, we had 545 fresh-faced Year 7 students beginningtheir high schooling journey with us. What an honour! To wearthe Mansfield uniform is certainly a privilege, but it does comewith an accompanying set of responsibilities and highexpectations. Our school is a high performing one becausewe are steadfast in adhering to those high expectations; weattempt our absolute best in every subject and in every lesson. This is not just the responsibility of students, but of teachersand staff: we have a whole school approach to our culture ofcare and excellence and I am so pleased and proud to seeour students beginning the year, as ever, with their best footforward!

Student volunteers

Over the past couple of years we have had a number ofstudents from Mansfield SHS assist in a wide range of sportingprograms at Wishart State School. Some of these programshave included touch football, netball, basketball, wwimming, cross Country and Athletics. Some of the responsibilities theyhave taken on have included coaching, managing andrefereeing of teams. Several of these students are past pupilsof Wishart State School but some are not.

These students have volunteered their time before and afterschool as well as weekends. They have been respectfultowards everyone they have come into contact with and havepositively mentored students and teams.

Not many people would know about their contribution to theWishart State School community as they are all very humble. We are very lucky to have these students in a day-to-day schoolsetting where their positive outlook can bring the best out ofothers.

They won’t all be perfect, but we will address everyissue no matter how small.

Bring Your Own (BYOD)

All BYO students will need to enrol their device in MicrosoftIntune. Instructions can be found on the school website andhave been emailed to all students. This is not always a straightforward process as every computer is different. Please bepatient and talk to our helpful IT Staff at the IT Help Desk if thereare any issues getting connected.

Learning and Performance

Welcome to 2019

A warm welcome to all parents andstudents, especially our Year 7s andthe families of other year levels who arenew to Mansfield SHS.

The Learning and PerformanceDepartment is a whole of schooldepartment which focuses on thelearning needs of all Mansfield SHS

students. You may have heard that we are a growing schooland that the numbers are quite significant. Despite this, youmay rest assured that we take individual learning to be a cornerstone of student success. We have many programs that aredesigned to either enhance, supplement or repair studentlearning needs, always aiming to improve their academicperformance.

As such this department delivers programs and strategies thatsupport the work of several teams of specialist teachers.Educational research is at the heart of all that we do, andour teams take the work of luminaries such as John Hattie,Robert Marzano and Lyn Sharratt and turn them into practicalhands-on programs that work for our students. The Learningand Performance teams are grouped around the following:

Should you have any questions or interest in any of these areas, please contact me via email on [email protected]

Over the coming year, I will be releasing news to hand on theexcellent work of each of these teams and hope to make asmany contacts as possible with families in the wider MansfieldSHS community.

Establish a study plan

To help reduce stress and ensure thatyou're as organised as you can be,

Have a study plan and goals for each day/week. Make sure it'sbalanced with other important things in your life. That way it willbe easier to stick to.

Create a study space that is comfortable, quiet, well lit, organised, and has no distractions nearby, such as TV, phone, people talking, etc.

Make sure you have everything you need for each study sessionas this helps to feel more confident and organised.

When studying, switch your phone and email off to stop thedistractions.

Don't get hungry before or while studying. Grab nutritionalsnacks that keep you going, such as fruit/nuts/dairy, etc.

Rest when you need to

Work out what times of day do you have the most energy andplan to study then.

Don't study more than 40-60 mins without a short break. Evena five minute break will help. A glass of water helps too!

When you have a break do something physical or fun, forexample go for a short run or play with a pet.

Look after yourself

Self-care is especially important when you have a big demandin your life – but what does it mean?

These will all be covered in more detail in future editions ofthe newsletters and also the weekly chats. But if you needinformation now, please come and see me.

Most importantly, if schooling and grades are your priority, youneed to stay focused. What are you prepared to let go of to helpachieve what you want?

And finally...

Student birthdaysAt Mansfield SHS we like to recognise student birthdays. Thisis done by class teachers on the student's birthday and canbe as simple as wishing them a happy birthday as they enterthe class. Some teachers have opted to lead a happy birthdaysong for the student with their classmates also singing. Weunderstand that some faith groups do not celebrate birthdays,so please let Chappy Glen know ([email protected]) if youwould not like your student's birthday recognised.

It is acashless payment method, allowing parents to load funds ontothe student ID card issued by the School. Students whomanage their own spending money can utilise the system bycreating the parent account in their own name, then addingthemselves as the student. Staff are able to utilise the systemfollowing the same set-up.

Advantages of MSA include:

How Do I Set Up an Account?

An account can be created once you know the student IDnumber for your student/s. However, until the student ID cardis issued by the school, the funds cannot be spent. Cards willbe handed out during the second half of Term 1.

• Students do not need to carry cash

• No minimum purchase amount

• No transaction fees apply when using the card

• Faster canteen service during breaks - cashlesspayments use an express line

• Uniforms can be purchased online

• Low balance reminders can be set

At the end of 2018, a fastlane service was introduced. Studentsmaking purchases without cash, can now move more quicklythrough the canteen during breaks. Students have the option to pre-ordermeals before school, all types of payment are accepted andpre-orders are picked up from a separate service area.

Volunteer assistance in the canteen is essential and helpsreduce the wages cost of the canteen, ensuring that the priceof food and drinks remains as low as possible. Lower expenseshelps free up funds for school facilities and amenities thatimprove our school community.

Opportunities to volunteer range from a few hours each month, through to full days each week. All parents, grandparents andfriends are welcome and previous experience isn’t required.Volunteering is a great way to engage with the schoolcommunity and an opportunity to meet other parents and staff.
