Dear [Recipient_Name], The Burbank Tech Talks concluded another successful, four-part entrepreneurial speaking series. A total of 500 attendees listened to reputable industry professionals in media, information technology, and venture capital provide advice and knowledge on how to succeed in the entrepreneurial industry, while also networking with local entrepreneurs. The City's Economic Development staff created this series, in part, to help highlight Burbank's technological and entrepreneurial attributes and assets while also assisting start ups with opening or relocating their business to Burbank. In partnership with the newly opened WeWork Burbank, staff hosted two Burbank Tech Talk events on site. We Work provides co-working space and services for entrepreneurs, freelancers, start-ups and small businesses. The partnership was mutually beneficial to both WeWork and the City. WeWork was able to market their available co- working space to local entrepreneurs, while the City was able to further solidify its position as a hub for entrepreneurial activity. Attendees were surveyed after each event and due to overwhelmingly positive feedback, Burbank Tech Talk events are slated to return with new speakers and additional networking opportunities in Fall 2017. Burbank Unified School District

September is Attendance Awareness Month

An awareness campaign about the importance of attendance has been recognized by many school districts throughout the country by proclaiming the month of September as “Attendance Awareness Month.” Encouraging regular school attendance is one of the most powerful ways to prepare students for success—both in school and in life. Good attendance helps students earn better grades, develop healthy life habits, avoid dangerous behavior, and ensure graduation from high school.

Increasing school attendance requires community-wide involvement and begins with an awareness of the cumulative negative effects of chronic absence on academic and social success. Chronic absenteeism, defined as a student missing 10% of the school year (or about 18 days a year), is one of the strongest indicators of future dropout. The importance of regular school attendance begins as early as kindergarten. Absenteeism in kindergarten is a predictor of low academic achievement in later grades. Students chronically absent in kindergarten and first grade are far less likely to read proficiently at the end of third grade. This trend is borne out in later grades, as well: 75% of students who are chronically absent in sixth grade will drop out of high school. In addition, school funding is tied to a formula known as ADA (Average Daily Attendance). Each student absence results in a loss to the District in funding of $47.29 per day.

For parents, it is important to determine the reasons for student absences—both physical and emotional and to take advantage of support services that the District and wider community have to offer. These resources include confidential counseling services offered by the Burbank Family Service Agency, free literacy tutoring offered by the Burbank Public Library, and afterschool activities.

Although Burbank Unified has a relatively high attendance rate of 96%, our staff will focus this year on finding the root cause of student absence in order to develop strategies to improve this number. Improving attendance is directly tied to the District goal of “creating a positive school climate by maintaining a safe environment and developing a sense of belonging for all students and staff.” Every staff member at Burbank Unified is working to achieve this goal.

At the August 17 Board of Education meeting, the Board adopted a formal resolution to bring a greater awareness of the importance of attendance. By proclaiming September 2017 as “Attendance Awareness Month,” the District wishes to encourage all of our stakeholders to reinforce for our students the importance of regular school attendance.
