Dear Rising 5th Grade Parents, The 4th grade students have worked hard this year to master skills, stretch their thinking, and develop strategies for solving problems. My hope is that the students will continue to keep their problem-solving skills sharp over the summer. Included with this letter is the required Summer Math Packet for each rising 5th grade student. Our goal is to help students keep their math skills current. By practicing over the summer, students are able to avoid the “summer slide” with regard to skills in math. In addition, our goal is for students to make certain they have automaticity with regard to basic math facts: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. This packet is to be completed and returned during the first week of school. We purposely chose to create a paper packet so that it is portable, not dependent on a device or the Internet, and so we could also post it in case it is misplaced. The packet is posted on the Heathwood middle school webpage. Students are welcome to seek help from a parent if needed, but we kindly ask that calculators are not used. Students should show all their work, which should be done in pencil. In addition to the required Summer Math Packet, I have also included some suggested practice work for those who want more practice and an extension section for those who really want to challenge themselves in math! Please let me know if you have any questions. Sincerely, Heather Capone [email protected] Required Work: Summer Math Packet-Complete one page per week Review of basic facts: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division Suggested Math Work: I suggest that students revisit and complete any exercises on the 4th-grade level of IXL. The students can use their same log in and password. While students are welcome to redo an exercise that has already been completed, they should focus on skill sections that have not been completed. Extension Math Work: If a student feels ready, he/she can extend thinking by exploring the different grade levels on IXL and trying the exercises given. Khan Academy is also a great source for a student who wants a challenge.

Dear Rising 5th Grade Parents,

The 4th grade students have worked hard this year to master skills, stretch their thinking, and develop strategies for solving problems.

Sincerely,Heather [email protected]
