KKie C , danghter of Mr. and Mrs Frank Smith, of Main street, died on Thursday last from congestion of the lungs following the measels, aged 2 years and It months. The funeral was held at the bouse on Saturday afternoon with Hev. T A. Reeves officiating. In- terment in Kockaway Cemetery with John C. Mctirath as director resources, his eighteenth birthday fonnd him employed iu au iron mine at Hurd- town, this county, operated by the Gleu- dou Iron Co., which hud extensive in- terests throughout this section as well as iu Pennsylvania. It was at this mine that Mr. Richards laid the foundation for that practical knowledge which Wm. Gerard. Following is the list of Petit Jurors drawn to serve at the Circuit Court, characteilzed his subsequent endeavors, Court of Oyer and Iermiuer Court of aud it waB not long before his close at- tention to the duties assigned to him re- ceived recognition at the hands of his employers, the logical result of which was his promotion from weighmaster to shaft boss. This was at that time con- sidered a position of great importance, yet it fell fur short of the measure of his capacity, aud his promotion to the otlice of superintendent, in 1K5.H. before he had reached his majority wan a fitting ac- knowledgement u£;the remarkable in- dustry, energy awl ability displayed by him to the brief time be hadboeil in tue company's employ. Not long after becoming superintend- ent Mr. Richards was made manager of all theCilendoii Iron Company's mining interests in this State, filling that posi- tion for upwards of forty years. But even the duties of this latter post, im- portant as they were, were performed by him with perfect ease and from time to time, as opportunity offered, he iden- tified himself with other ventures, or, to be more exact, other ventures were originated by him, as, for example, when machinery was needed iu the op- eration >f the mines, he established a company to build it, aud the Morris County Machine aud Iron Company sprang iuto existence with Mr. Richards us president ; lumber wan required, and the Dover Lumber Company wasforined, he being made president. With this spirit of expansion domiuatiug him it was but n step to organize the Dover Iron Company, tn work up, iu part, the product of the mines uuder his snperin- tendency ; to organize various branch railroads for the transportation of ores, etc. ; to organize a bnuk, which institu- tion, the multiplication of mining, manu- facturing and mercantile institutions made necessary ; ntitil finally his inter- ests became diversified to an almost in- credible degree, as will be seen by n perusal of the following array of posts of usefulness of which he was simulta- neously the inenmbaut : President of tin; Dover Iron Co. ; the Dover and Rocka- way Railroad Co.; the Morris County Machine and Irou Co. ; the Ogden Mine Rnilroad Co ; the Hibernia Mine Rail- ro.id Co. ; the Hiberuia Underground Railroad Co. ; the National Union Bank ; the Dover Lumber Co. ; the Dover Print- Jurors. Farmers, as a class, do not keep their accounts a.- well u h manufacturers, and the returns from farmers may occa- ioually include .serious emirs which a trained eye will at once detect Heuca the furm schedules must be examined aud such errors corrected before th» tubles can be made up from them with safety. If ii farmer imports thitt his laud sowu to wheat \va» ten ucres uud the yield four thousand bushels, it is clear that au average yield of four linudred bushels to the acre IK incredible, aud inuet be rejected or corrected in accord- uce with the probabilities. Sometimes the truth can be made out by an expert from comparison with entries in other parts of the schedules ; sometimes corres- pondence must be opened to settle the doubt. All this ranks uuder the gener- al head of verifying the schedules, and the Agricultural Division plaustogive all the time possible to the work of veri- fying each of the millions of farm sched- ules. To accomplish this iu the time al- lowed, the work of several hnndred clerks will be required, and they must have hard and fast rales to guide them. For example, they might be told : When the wheat reports show a product of over forty bushels to the acre, they are suspicions and mast be laid aside for an expert to pass upon. But auy such rules must vnry with the section of the country. A yield of tweuty bushelB in one section aiislit ue more questionable than a yield of forty bushels iu another. Hence the division must fix in advance what is the range of reports, in each part -of—thoa conntry and for each orop that may be accepted as probable on their face and not requiring special ex- numiution To get tbe limits of proba- bility for this purpose for each county in the Cuited States, tliat is, the maximum nud minimum yield aud the maximum and minimum price which may be ac- cepted without verification, is the object of au extcusivi' correspondence now being carried ou by tbe Agricultural Di- vision under the direction of Mr. L. (J. Powers, Chief .Stalistican iu rharge of that division. Three simple schedules have been prepared and printed ou dif- ferent colored paper in order that they may be readily distinguished one from another. Oue of them covers ordinary garden vegetables, a second covers fruits, aud the third the great staple field crops Each asks about the units of measure •mployed aud the net price realized, aud tbe two more important schedules, those for staple field products and for vegeta- bles, usk for the highest and lowest yield of each crop per acre. These schedules are being miiih'd to prominent farmers all over the country aud iu many in- stances returns have already been re- ceivud. When the returns have been received and tabulated, a scheme will be made from tlu-m of what i- to be accept- ed as correct in each case and what is to be probed farther. The only nun of the ofh'ce is to get \\ hut was really the m- teutiou of the faruier m answering the uestious. If t lie presumption is strong- ly against his meaning what thv sched- ule says, the oftici" will try tn learn by corresponded-* 1 from thf Supervisor, or the Enumerator, (ir the farmer himself what the real facts were. If tho farming pnblic will continue to cooperate with the heartiness already displayed, this effort will result in :» more trustworthy census of fnrnis than has ever been taken. Farmers, as a class, are less able to cooperate than tbe representatives of any other great indus- try. Hence the Census Office can do more for them thim it call for central- ized lines of business, which can aud do make their own investigations, aud it will do its best to preseut a full and ac- enrate photograph of this leading occupa- tion. The Director of the Ceusus urges every oue interest ed to aid the work. Mot ,- e wilincrs of the evpn i,, p , s ^ , Mrs. T, H. B. ,,,., flrs ,' rizp RaTmoIld L . bonbv prize. It was at this minethat Mr. Richards laid the foundationfor that practical knowledge which

Wm. Gerard.

Following is the list of Petit Jurorsdrawn to serve at the Circuit Court,

characteilzed his subsequent endeavors, Court of Oyer and Iermiuer Court ofaud it waB not long before his close at-tention to the duties assigned to him re-ceived recognition at the hands of hisemployers, the logical result of whichwas his promotion from weighmaster toshaft boss. This was at that time con-sidered a position of great importance, yet it fell fur short of the measure of hiscapacity, aud his promotion to the otliceof superintendent, in 1K5.H. before he hadreached his majority wan a fitting ac-knowledgement u£;the remarkable in-dustry, energy awl ability displayed byhim to the brief time be hadboeil in tuecompany's employ.

Not long after becoming superintend-ent Mr. Richards was made manager ofall theCilendoii Iron Company's mininginterests in this State, filling that posi-tion for upwards of forty years. Buteven the duties of this latter post, im-portant as they were, were performedby him with perfect ease and from timeto time, as opportunity offered, he iden-tified himself with other ventures, or,to be more exact, other ventures wereoriginated by him, as, for example, when machinery was needed iu the op-eration >f the mines, he established acompany to build it, aud the MorrisCounty Machine aud Iron Companysprang iuto existence with Mr. Richardsus president ; lumber wan required, andthe Dover Lumber Company wasforined,he being made president. With thisspirit of expansion domiuatiug him itwas but n step to organize the DoverIron Company, tn work up, iu part, theproduct of the mines uuder his snperin-tendency ; to organize various branchrailroads for the transportation of ores, etc. ; to organize a bnuk, which institu-tion, the multiplication of mining, manu-facturing and mercantile institutionsmade necessary ; ntitil finally his inter-ests became diversified to an almost in-credible degree, as will be seen by nperusal of the following array of postsof usefulness of which he was simulta-neously the inenmbaut : President of tin;Dover Iron Co. ; the Dover and Rocka-way Railroad Co.; the Morris CountyMachine and Irou Co. ; the Ogden MineRnilroad Co ; the Hibernia Mine Rail-ro.id Co. ; the Hiberuia UndergroundRailroad Co. ; the National Union Bank ;the Dover Lumber Co. ; the Dover Print-

Iu the Agneulturnl Division the needof time fur pri'limlnury work is perhapsas great us anywhere in the Census Of-fice. Farmers, as a class, do not keeptheir accounts a.- well uh manufacturers, and the returns from farmers may occa-ioually include .serious emirs which a

trained eye will at once detect Heucathe furm schedules must be examinedaud such errors corrected before th»tubles can be made up from them withsafety. If ii farmer imports thitt his laudsowu to wheat \va» ten ucres uud theyield four thousand bushels, it is clearthat au average yield of four linudredbushels to the acre IK incredible, audinuet be rejected or corrected in accord-uce with the probabilities. Sometimes

the truth can be made out by an expertfrom comparison with entries in otherparts of the schedules ; sometimes corres-pondence must be opened to settle thedoubt. All this ranks uuder the gener-al head of verifying the schedules, andthe Agricultural Division plaustogiveall the time possible to the work of veri-fying each of the millions of farm sched-ules. To accomplish this iu the time al-lowed, the work of several hnndredclerks will be required, and they musthave hard and fast rales to guide them. For example, they might be told : Whenthe wheat reports show a product ofover forty bushels to the acre, they aresuspicions and mast be laid aside for anexpert to pass upon. But auy suchrules must vnry with the section of thecountry. A yield of tweuty bushelB inone section aiislit ue more questionablethan a yield of forty bushels iu another.Hence the division must fix in advancewhat is the range of reports, in eachpart -of—thoa conntry and for each oropthat may be accepted as probable ontheir face and not requiring special ex-numiution To get tbe limits of proba-bility for this purpose for each county inthe Cuited States, tliat is, the maximumnud minimum yield aud the maximumand minimum price which may be ac-cepted without verification, is the objectof au extcusivi' correspondence nowbeing carried ou by tbe Agricultural Di-vision under the direction of Mr. L. (J.Powers, Chief .Stalistican iu rharge ofthat division. Three simple scheduleshave been prepared and printed ou dif-ferent colored paper in order that theymay be readily distinguished one fromanother. Oue of them covers ordinarygarden vegetables, a second covers fruits, aud the third the great staple field cropsEach asks about the units of measure

•m ployed aud the net price realized, audtbe two more important schedules, thosefor staple field products and for vegeta-bles, usk for the highest and lowest yieldof each crop per acre. These schedulesare being miiih'd to prominent farmersall over the country aud iu many in-stances returns have already been re-ceivud. When the returns have beenreceived and tabulated, a scheme will bemade from tlu-m of what i- to be accept-ed as correct in each case and what is tobe probed farther. The only nun of theofh'ce is to get \\ hut was really the m-teutiou of the faruier m answering the

uestious. If t lie presumption is strong-ly against his meaning what thv sched-ule says, the oftici" will try tn learn bycorresponded-*1 from thf Supervisor, orthe Enumerator, (ir the farmer himselfwhat the real facts were.

If tho farming pnblic will continue tocooperate with the heartiness alreadydisplayed, this effort will result in :»more trustworthy census of fnrnis thanhas ever been taken. Farmers, as aclass, are less able to cooperate than tberepresentatives of any other great indus-try. Hence the Census Office can domore for them thim it call for central-ized lines of business, which can aud domake their own investigations, aud itwill do its best to preseut a full and ac-enrate photograph of this leading occupa-tion. The Director of the Ceusus urgesevery oue interest ed to aid the work.
