Debra Van Swearingen

Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery is very pleased to announce that Debra Van Swearingen will have

a month long solo art exhibition and she will be featured on the gallery’s front page and in the “Solo Art Series” archive.

Debra Van Swearingen resides in Oklahoma and she is a fine art nature photographer. She will be featured

on the Light Space & Time website, in press releases and throughout the gallery’s social media networks.

In addition, Debra will be featured on our YouTube channel, in our event catalogue and on our event postcard.

The “Solo Art Series” is a series of monthly solo art exhibitions for established artists who have a body of

work to present to the public. Artist participants were asked to submit the following 3 components for the

“Solo Art Series” competition; 1. Their art. 2. Their artist biography. 3. Their artist statement. All 3

elements were evaluated and judged, which resulted in the art gallery choosing 4 artists to be featured in

4 individual 1 month solo art exhibitions.

Below is Debra’s Artist’s Biography, her Artist’s Statement and 15 images of her photography. We hope

that you will take the time to read Debra’s information and to take a look at her wonderful nature photography.

Artist Biography:

Debra Van Swearingen has had a passion for photograph since the age of 11 when her father gave her a

Kodak instamatic. Being a visual person, it seemed very natural to view life through a lens. She has studied

and been influenced by a broad range of photographers and artists such as Ansel Adams, Margaret Bourke-

White, Georgia O’Keefe as well as many contemporary photographers of today. Over her 30+ years of

experience, she has studied various processes such as black and white, Polaroid transfer, Polaroid manipulation, hand painted, and digital capture.

After graduating from the University of Oklahoma, she worked for the Department of Defense in

contracting and pursued photography in the evenings at the Oklahoma School of Photography. It was after

2 years of cancer remediation in 1995-1996 that Debra decided to make her passion her profession. She

established a studio in the Paseo Arts District of Oklahoma City in 1997 and has become an accomplished award-winning photographer in the photographic arts field.

Debra’s subjects are derived from the “beauty of nature” in the form of animal and botanical images, landscapes, and still life’s. She prefers working with natural light.

Although she used film for many years (making fiber prints and hand-coloring with oils and pencils), she

now strives to give each image its own individual appeal utilizing digital technology. Her work is displayed

at her studio/gallery and private collections, and may be obtained through her website

(vanswearingenphotography.com). Some of her images have also been published, marketed, and licensed through publishing companies.

Her goal is to continue to provide photography that provokes emotion within the viewer; whether it be solemn, inquisitive, nostalgic or wondrous.

Artist Statement:

Throughout the winter of 2013, I became intrigued by the beauty and fierceness of several hawks that were

searching for food in our woods and in the field behind our house. Something about the power of their

huge wingspans and the majestic presence of these birds had me hooked. Being somewhat obsessed, I

found that the process of photographing them became a challenging sport which ultimately gave me more

and more experience at shooting large birds in flight.

The experience gained was soon put to use as my husband and I were taken to some property in Texas that

our in-laws were getting ready to build on. It was a beautiful piece of property by a lake with towering bare

trees, and to my delightful surprise, an egret and heron roost. Being awestruck, I immediately took out my

camera and became absorbed by photographing these graceful, splendid birds. They completely filled me

with inspiration with their huge, impressive wingspans and slender, elegant necks. Watching their

behavior up close and personal was absolutely fascinating.

In January 2015, I took the opportunity to photograph the Sandhill crane migration in New Mexico. What

grand and interesting wading birds these are. Once again I was inspired to capture these creatures in a most artistic sense.

This series of photographs has been a pleasure to work 0n and I am now very excited to show. My

photographs have now become more like the vision that I wanted to express by utilizing some computer

enhancements. The series has also grown with new photographs and has become very special to me as a new branch of my photographic art journey.
