Description:
Video link- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIy-kp5Zfno Reading, writing and comprehending form the three main pillars of education. The inability to acquire these skills despite possessing the required intelligence is a specific learning disorder also called as Dyslexia. It was shocking to find out that the prevalence rate of dyslexia is estimated to be around 9.87% among Indian school children and 40% of these children quit school due to the frustration and don’t even finish their 5th grade education. The primary purpose of my project is to determine how can I provide children with dyslexia in India the kind of attention and special education they deserve, in the most efficient way, using the already existing resources? For the more specific research- individual, group and expert interviews were conducted in various parts of India to understand the local conditions. Using local and global data, this study was designed to investigate the missing links. I discovered from my research that there is a harmful and an unacceptable wide gap between the extensive research on dyslexia and how this knowledge is not implemented by schools. It was also observed that the teachers and the parents who play the most significant role in a child’s mental development are least or not aware of dyslexia at all in 80% of the cases. Consequently, the dyslexic children go un-identified and un-remediated with great harm to the children, to the family and ultimately to the society. Therefore, my aim as a business designer is to act to bridge this gap and spread awareness by shifting the focus of the problem from children to the teachers, in the primary schools. To adapt and apply the available knowledge within a complete system of detecting, treating and tracking the disorder in the most efficient way.
