The West Orange Chamber of Commerce exists to serve by “FACILITATING OPPORTUNITY.”

December 2011

The Chamber’s 39th year is nearing its end. As with every year before, the Chamber has focused on its members and supporting each to ensure that we fulfill our purpose, every day. That purpose, which I announced last February at our 2010 Big Orange Award reception, is “Facilitating Opportunity.” That simple phrase means something different to just about every member. For some, learning about business trends or best practices at our Lunch and Learns may be of importance; to others it is the networking aspect of just about every event, large and small that we create. Regardless, of what inspires and ultimately keeps you a vital member of our Chamber, I thank you.

There are some very specific members that I would like to thank. They are the outgoing members of the 2011 Board of Directors. These individuals were tasked with setting the policy and direction of this organization throughout the year. My most sincere thanks go to Felicia Lewis – Regions Bank, John Marzano – Orlando Health, Jim Thomas – Biosphere Consulting, Inc., Yog Melwani – Apex Commerce Center, Chesta Hembrooke – S.T.A.R.S. of West Orange, and Representative Steve Precourt.

Their service has been invaluable and has set a high bar for the new members of the 2012 WOCC board. Yet, these individuals will undoubtedly rise to the task. Join me in welcoming Dr. Cece Rivers - UCF, Christine Moore - OCPS Board Member, Gary Shif of Best Cleaners, Joseph McMullen of Wellcare Health Plans, Jaclyn Whiddon – The Whiddon Group, Bruce Young – Edward Jones Financial, and Star Kraschinsky – Florida Virtual School. They will be valuable additions to our board and will work diligently with our incoming chairman, David Sylvester of Orlando Health in making our 40th anniversary year, a most memorable and successful one for all.

We will be starting our new year of course with a most popular Business After Hours at Health Central on January 19th. Shortly after that, we will be honoring our 2011 award winners at the Big Orange Awards presented by DRB Benefits Group and Orlando Health on February 2nd at the Special Event Center of Valencia College West Campus. These individuals have given of time, talent and treasure to the Chamber and community.

WOCC Members Attended a Free Workshop on Goal Setting and Planning for Next Year

As Lewis Carroll, author of Alice in Wonderland said “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will get you there.” WOCC Member, Peggy Isaacson of HR On Call guided fellow member attendees through the latest Chamber Lunch and Learn to help members get on the right track for 2012.

“If you want to get to where you want to go in the next year, it’s going to take more than time management and to-do lists” said Isaacson. “Goal setting and planning draw the road maps for what you want to achieve.”

This fast paced session was held in the Chamber board room and allowed WOCC members a chance to learn how to wrap their goals around what is most important to them in their business and personal life. They also learned about envisioning their destinations so that they can plan the appropriate steps for getting there. Peggy explained the concept of SMART goals and how to write them effectively.

Perhaps the most important piece of info chamber members left with was the process to get from goal to action plan along with the best way to overcome the obstacles that you may face along the way.

The West Orange Chamber - Your Business Advocate by Krista Carter

The Economic & Governmental Advocacy Committee (EGAC) and the Chamber Board of Directors have been very busy on behalf of the West Orange Chamber membership. The EGAC recommended the Chamber Board support two positions that will benefit not only the West Orange community but all of Central Florida. At the November 4th Board Meeting, the board voted to support and advocate in favor of the Property Tax Abatement Referendum that will be on the January 31st Preferential Presidential Primary ballot in Orange County and to pass a resolution of support for closing the statewide Internet Sales Tax Loophole.

The Property Tax Abatement Referendum, if approved, will allow Orange County Board of County Commissioners to adopt ordinances enacting economic development tax exemptions for qualified businesses. Businesses must meet certain criteria to qualify. The most important criteria, creating 10 or more new full-time jobs with higher wages than the area average. These tax exemptions would be for new or expanding businesses and will only apply to county taxes. The Chamber plans to educate and promote to our members and the general public on the importance of voting YES on this referendum and how it will truly help to create jobs in Orange County.

Closing the Internet Sales Tax Loophole is an issue gaining lots of momentum throughout the state. The West Orange Chamber of Commerce is joining forces with The Florida Chamber, Associated Industries of Florida and My Main Street Florida in closing this loophole. When a Floridian purchases from a seller located outside of Florida, the remote seller does not have to collect the sales and use tax at the time of the transaction, although the tax is still legally owed to the state by the Floridian. However, few Florida residents know that they are required to pay the sales tax owed on remotely conducted transactions directly to the Florida Department of Revenue, and even fewer actually make such payments. This situation is costing the state and local governments hundreds of millions, if not billions, of dollars in lost tax revenue.

The WOCC knows that the Internet Sales Tax Loophole prohibits small businesses, which are required to charge sales tax, from competing on a level playing field against internet-only retailers who are not required to charge sales tax. The WOCC intends be an advocate for our members and to educate them and the general public that a sale is a sale, whether it is made online or on Main Street and that sales tax should be charged and paid. For more information about this issue, please visit: http://mymainstreetflorida.com/

The Chamber will be an advocate for both of these items. The Chamber staff has already notified the Orange County Legislative Delegation of our support of closing the Internet Sales Tax Loophole and are scheduling appointments to meet with key players of this legislation. If you have had experience with this unlevel playing field and would like to share that with our local delegation, please contact me so we can incorporate your story on our visits.

Please keep an eye open for all of this and please help spread the word. Our goal is to encourage our members and Orange County voters to vote YES on the Property Tax Abatement referendum and help create more jobs in Orange County and create a level playing field for all retailers in Florida.

Since it began in October 1998, Reading Reindeer has distributed more than 35,000 books through its holiday campaign and given out to over 13,000 babies born at Health Central during its history.

From now through December 16th, Reading Reindeer hopes to collect 3,000 new books and $4,500 to meet its goal and fill its wish list. Each book distributed includes a brochure from the Adult Literacy League explaining to parents the importance of reading to children, even the youngest infants.

New books suitable for children from infancy through middle school are needed.

Through Dec. 15, Reading Reindeer drop-off boxes are located at the Times office (720 S. Dillard St., Winter Garden, FL 34787), the West Orange Chamber of Commerce (12184 W. Colonial Drive, Winter Garden, FL 34787), Book Warehouse at Festival Bay (5250 International Drive, #326, Orlando, FL 32819) and the four local libraries — Southwest in the Dr. Phillips area, West Oaks in Ocoee, Windermere and Winter Garden.
