Dear Friends, On a recent visit to Wouldham school I enjoyed looking at a large poster

of St. Francis of Assisi, which was a collaborative effort by Dove class,

and depicted the saint surrounded by a large number of animals.

Francis is probably best known and most admired for his simple lifestyle

and for his care for all of God’s creation and for these qualities he would

be a good patron saint for all those who care for the environment.

However, as the Christmas season approaches, I am reminded of

something else which Francis did.

He was the person who introduced the practice of placing a crib in church

at Christmas. He did this because he felt that many people in the church

and in society in Italy at the time had become wealthy and

materialistic and neglected the needs of the poor.

Frances noticed that worship, especially in very grand and ornate

churches, emphasised the greatness and power of God, and that a

reminder was needed that God came to earth in the person of Jesus, born

into a poor family, and at the time of his birth, a homeless refugee,

depending on the hospitality of strangers.

The crib was a revolutionary idea, allowing people to see the humanity

and vulnerability in Jesus as a small child. It also reminded people that

Christian discipleship involved caring for the poor, the homeless and the

refugees.

It’s a good message for Christians today.

I hope that this Christmas we will worship the Christ child and seek to

serve him in others in the way that God desires.

Wishing you joy and peace, throughout Advent, Christmas and Epiphany.

In peace, Mike.

WINCHESTER HOUSE NURSING HOME, WOULDHAM

We are a very creative bunch here at Winchester House and November has

been a busy month for residents as we prepared for Christmas with lots of

festive arts and crafts projects on the go!

December now has a jam-packed list of events planned, we are looking

forward to visits from The Upchurch Bell Ringers, The All Saints Church

Choir and a firm favourite with our residents is the visit from the local

school children, these events along with our many entertainers will be

getting us all in the festive mood! We will also be holding a Christmas

raffle in aid of the ‘Cash for Sash’ campaign.

Sasha is a young mother of two, who suffers from Leukaemia and follow-

ing a bone marrow transplant, has relapsed after being in remission. The

NHS has refused to fund a second bone marrow transplant despite the fact

that there is a suitable donor available. Sasha now needs to fund this

second transplant herself at a cost of £250,000. We have committed to

help Sasha, her family and friends to raise the money that she needs. We

would be very grateful for any support by donating raffle prizes or buying

raffle tickets. We hope that you can help us to raise money for this cause. continued

COMPASSION, ACCEPTANCE, RESPONSIBILITY, FORGIVENESS, TRUST

Following the half term break we returned to school for 'Multicultural Week'

which provided a week of enrichment for children in all year groups. The week

involved learning about other cultures and religions as well as lots of creativity,

including baking. Panda Class (Year R) even had their own Mexican Restaurant!

Friday 4th November saw our PTFA hold their first Firework Display. This was

a great evening and we would like to say a big thank you to everyone who helped

with the organisation and who attended this event. It looks like our PTFA raised

in the region of £1,000 for school funds for which the school is very grateful.

During the week leading up to the 11th November the children gave generously to

buy poppies, wristbands and other merchandise in support of the Royal British

Legion. On the 11th November itself the whole school observed the traditional

two minute silence and were reminded of the sacrifices of our servicemen and

women, both past and present.

The Year 6 children enjoyed a trip to the theatre to see a production of Roald

Dahl's 'George's Marvellous Medicine' while Mrs Carlow continued to run

workshops for the parents of children in Panda Class (Yr R) covering areas such

as phonics, reading, maths and cursive writing. We also welcomed Arabella Paul

from the Faith Mission into school to run the annual 'Treasure Seekers' after

school club for children in Yrs 2-6.

In December, as always, school life is busy with many events and activities

planned. The month starts with our Christmas Fair on Friday 2nd December. This

is always a great fundraising event for school that everyone looks forward to.

During the weeks that follow, we will be enjoying a performance of the

pantomime Cinderella before our children do some performing for parents in the

KS1 and KS2 Christmas productions. Children from Burham Preschool have been

invited to watch the KS1 dress rehearsal while children from Panda Class (Year

R) will visit Burham Preschool to enjoy their Nativity. The PTFA are holding

Christmas Discos for all the children on the 15th December while the 16th

December sees a variety of things happening including Christmas Jumper Day

(raising money for Save the Children), the Christmas lunch and our Advent

Eucharist which this year will be held at Burham Old Church. The last day of term

sees us welcoming the Family Trust Christmas Panto into school, followed by a

Family Time performance and sing along to which all parents and carers are

invited. We Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

WOULDHAM PARISH COUNCIL

The Council meeting was held in the village hall on Tuesday November1st.

We heard from residents about improvements they would like to make to

the village hall and concerns about speeding.

Photo exhibition The Parish Council held a photo exhibition in the

village hall. There are hundreds of photos of old Wouldham bringing back

memories for many residents. Our thanks to everyone who attended.

Survey The Wouldham Project and the Parish Council need as many

surveys as we can get regarding a new village hall. It is not too late to drop

a survey into any Councillors door or leave at the shop. Many were filled

in in the hall and on Facebook but the more the better for the Lottery Bid.

Halloween Drop in Once again there were spooky goings on in the

village hall on the night of All Hallows. Many witches and wizards,

skeletons and monsters were out and about and welcomed into the hall

with hot dogs and hot drinks. Thank you to Anne Marr for organising this

great night for the village.

River Wall At the PC meeting the Borough Councillors gave a report on

the River Wall. There are 2 main problems, the sinking of the path causing

the tarmac to shrink and crack and the rebuild of the concrete river wall.

The financial provision for this work is available and it has planning

approval. It is not known when it will need to be carried out. The full

report is on our website.

Progress of CCTV The Parish Council are arranging for power into the

new cabins on the Rec, once this is done the CCTV can be installed, again

we are aware of the time this has taken but it will be worth it for future

Fun Days and use of the Rec.

Evening 155 service Just a reminder about the Evening service, KCC

are still part funding the service so we need to use it or lose it. Make sure

the driver scans your ticket or pass so that numbers are properly

monitored. Finally as this is the last report until the February issue,

Wouldham Parish Council would like to wish all residents :

A Happy and Peaceful Christmas and New Year.

Wouldham All Saints Church of England Primary School

Remember, remember, remember – that was the theme for November! It

all started with thinking about Guy Fawkes and how this very famous plot

was a strike against democracy and the rule of law. This helped us in to

thinking about how precious these qualities are in our country. We had a

really successful fireworks event with lots of people coming along to enjoy

food and fireworks organised by ‘The Friends of Wouldham All Saints’. If

you came and supported us then ‘thank you!’

On a similar theme of remembering we spent a week considering all those

injured or killed during service in our armed forces with a special service

of remembrance in the church on Friday 11th. Well done Kestrel Class for

leading us in this.

Next came UK Parliament week for more thoughts about democracy and

the School Parliament met to make a few decisions around Children in

Need and other fund raising! We also challenged the school to recognise

and name a number of past prime ministers – we wonder how the adults

would do with this task as well?

December is now here and so we turn towards advent and then Christmas.

Our school decorations are being themed around famous and favourite

Christmas carols giving us chance to look into the stories behind them as

well. December is set to be very busy with children performing in nativity

plays, carol singing in different places as well as celebrating parties and

rounding the term off with a carol service on Tuesday 20th led by Swan

Class Year 6. We’re also being treated to a whole school trip to The

Central Theatre, Chatham to see Jack and the Beanstalk on Friday 16th.

Thank you to ‘The Friends’ for doing this for all the children – we’re

bound to enjoy it – oh no we won’t!!!!

We finish the term at the usual time on Tuesday 20th December and then

return to school for Term 3 on Wednesday 4th January 2017. We’re now

nearing potential bad weather days and so please keep a check on our

website for more information about what to do in the case of snow. We

will endeavour to open in all weathers but we do need to make sure we can

keep everyone safe and this can only happen if we can guarantee enough

staff on the day. January will see new themes and more excitement in

learning and more details can be found on the school website –

www.wouldham.kent.sch.uk

Have a very wonderful Christmas and New Year

December & January in Your Garden

Winter waves a magic wand over this world,

and behold everything is softer and more beautiful’

Now that winter has arrived, the trees have lost their leaves and the garden is

going to sleep for the winter. One of the most valuable jobs to do at this time of

year is to clear any remaining leaves from the lawn & beds and bag them up for

leaf mould giving you a fabulous soil conditioner in a year or two. It also helps to

prevent slugs and snails from hibernating in your garden by removing the dark

damp places in which they hide. Depending on your preference, you can also

either cut back the spent heads of perennials or leave them over winter to provide

a place for bugs to hibernate. If you do cut back, don’t forget to leave a small pile

of leaves and cuttings at the back of the garden somewhere less disturbed to

encourage the beneficial insects to over-winter.

It’s not too late to add some winter colour to your garden, there are plenty of

winter bedding plants such as Cyclamen and Bellis, or shrubs such as Skimmia

and Ivy that can all be used in pots to create a winter display. Or choose evergreen

grasses such as Carex that will look good all year round. It’s also an ideal time to

plant summer fruits bushes and canes such as raspberries, strawberries &

blueberries whilst they are in their dormant season, and should ensure a crop next

year as they will have had time to establish before spring. Blueberries prefer an

acid soil, so plant them in a separate area or in a pot for best results.

Do you need an additional bed for growing a few veg, or perhaps a cutting patch

for bringing flowers indoors throughout the year, or a small bed for the children

to experiment with seed sowing and harvesting their own crops ? Winter is an

ideal time to start creating new beds or gardening areas. Roughly dig a new area

with a spade and leave the cold weather the break down large clumps of earth, &

by spring time the digging over will be a much easier task.

Other things to be doing in the garden this month:

Prune Apple & Pear trees and Currant and Gooseberry bushes to maintain

an open shape

Clean tools, pots & greenhouses with a mild disinfectant solution

Sow Broad Beans & Sweet Peas ready for early crops next year

Harvest brightly coloured stems and braches with berries for a seasonal

display or Christmas wreath.

Keep bird feeders topped up over winter for our native birds

& bring the outdoors in by adding a few fairy lights & baubles to the bare

branches during the Christmas season

We have some Wouldham allotment plots available.

BURHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWS

It has been noted that some cold callers are targeting Burham, Downsview in particular.

Please be very careful who you open the door to, use a security chain if possible. Don’t let

anyone in without an appointment. or agree to have any work carried out. If you are

concerned, contact the Police on 101.

Anti-social behaviour: We cannot stress enough the importance of reporting any and all

anti-social behaviour to 101. This includes “boy racers” and speeding vehicles. If you feel

that there is a potential danger of life then 999 can be called. The more calls 101 receive,

the higher the Police presence will be.

Parking: We have received complaints about parking on the pavements particularly in

New Road. Please do not park on the pavements, it can restrict access for emergency

vehicles and of course pedestrians.

Burham Allotments: For the first time in ages, we have a few ½ plots available. Please

contact Cllr Dave Young on 01634 867669 for more information

Fly Tipping: All fly tipping reported to the Parish Council is passed on to TMBC as the

appropriate authority and investigated by them. Recently there was a fly tip at the

recycling site. TMBC were notified and the offender identified and a fine of £80 issued.

Payment has been received by TMBC. This was the second offender in Burham this year

to receive a fine. Do not leave any items around the recycling area that cannot be placed in

the recycling banks. This area is constantly monitored and fly tipping will be reported.

Dog owners: Once again we need to remind dog owners to be responsible when their dog

fouls. Complaints have been received regarding dog poo not being picked up. There are

many bins around the village for disposing dog deposits. Dog poo is a major concern to

members of the public and of course carries very nasty germs which can be dangerous

particularly to young children and older persons. A Bag and Flag (dog poo collection) took

place on New Court Road footpath (end of Scarborough Lane). In approximately 1 hour,

32 bags were collected. This shows there certainly are irresponsible dog owners using the

pathways and pavements in Burham.

All residents should now be in receipt of Trenport latest Newsletter dated November

2016. We would like to draw your attention to the back page “New Court Road – right of

way update”. Hard copies of the newsletter are available from the Parish Office

Bull Lane (Eccles) junction with Pilgrims Way: As you are all aware this is a very

difficult junction when exiting from Bull Lane, Eccles. Many of you have personally

experienced “near misses” on this junction, although there have been NO REPORTED

accidents in the last 3 years. KCC have agreed to carry out a feasibility study and traffic

monitoring to ascertain if anything can be carried out to improve the safety of all. Watch

this space.

On a lighter note, the Parish Council would like to wish all the residents of Burham (and

of course the surrounding area) and very happy Christmas and a peaceful 2017.

If you have any items that you would like the Parish Council to discuss, just give me a call

on my new number 01634 685936, e-mail me on [email protected] or come along to

the monthly meetings, normally held the last Monday of the month. The next meeting is

scheduled for Monday 19th December 2016, 7.30 pm The Parish Building, ROCHESTER

ROAD, BURHAM . January 2017 meeting is scheduled for Monday 30th .
