LOOK TO THE SKIES:* December 11 - Mercury at Greatest Eastern Elongation. Look for the planetlow in the western sky just after sunset.
* December 7-17 - Geminids Meteor Shower. It peaks this year on the nightof the 13th and morning of the 14th. It is considered by many to be the bestshower in the heavens, producing up to 120 multicolored meteors per hour at itspeak. It is produced by debris left behind by an asteroid known as 3200Phaethon, Best viewing will be from a dark location after midnight. Meteors willradiate from the constellation Gemini, but can appear anywhere in the sky.
* December 14 - Full Moon, Supermoon. This full moon was known by earlyNative American tribes as the Full Cold Moon because this is the time of yearwhen the cold winter air settles in and the nights become long and dark. Thismoon has also been known as the Full Long Nights Moon and the Moon BeforeYule. This is also the last of three supermoons for 2016. The Moon will be at itsclosest approach to the Earth and may look slightly larger and brighter than usual.
* December 21 - December Solstice. The South Pole of the earth will be tiltedtoward the Sun, which will have reached its southernmost position in the sky andwill be directly over the Tropic of Capricorn at 23.44 degrees south latitude. This isthe first day of winter (winter solstice) in the Northern Hemisphere and the first dayof summer (summer solstice) in the Southern Hemisphere.
* December 17-25. - Ursids Meteor Shower. It peaks this year on the thenight of the 21st and morning of the 22nd.The Ursids is a minor meteor showerproducing about 5-10 meteors per hour. It is produced by dust grains left behindby comet Tuttle, Best viewing will be just after midnight from a dark location faraway from city lights. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Ursa Minor, butcan appear anywhere in the sky.
* December 29 - New Moon. The Moon will located on the same side of theEarth as the Sun and will not be visible in the night sky. This phase occurs at06:53 UTC. This is the best time of the month to observe faint objects such asgalaxies and star clusters because there is no moonlight to interfere.

Do you need a ride for an Out of County Medical Appointment?
The Geauga County Department on Aging provides the Out of County Medical Transportation to Geauga County seniors, age 60 and older
to designated parts of Lake, Cuyahoga, Portage, Ashtabula, and Trumbull counties, and the city of Twinsburg.
Out of County Medical Transportation is available to Geauga Seniors on a first come-first served basis, Monday through Friday. There are
vehicles equipped with wheelchair lifts. This is a curb-to-curb service and individuals need to be able get in and out of the medical buildings
on their own. A family member or attendant can also ride with senior. When you call to book your ride please provide us your doctor’s
name, address and phone number, the appointment date and time and approximately how long the appointment may last.
There is no fee for this program. Although, we will gladly accept donations to help enhance and grow the program. For further information

CLOSING POLICYThe Geauga County Department on Aging winter snow closing
policy for 2016-2017 Geauga Senior Centers will be closed if the CountyCommissioners close the county offices. Senior centers will remain open even if
local schools are closed. If you have any questions, feel free to call the Department onAging at (440) 279-2130. For county office closing alerts watch WKYC Channel 3 or WEWS Channel 5.
You may also tune your radio to AM1330, AM1460 or AM1100.

Senior Center Outings and Activities
DECEMBER PANCAKE BREAKFAST Chardon Senior Center hosts Monthly Pancake Breakfasts on the
1st Friday of every month. Pancakes, sausage, coffee, juice, milk,
are served from 9:00am, until 10:30am at no cost. Our Site Meeting
will immediately follow, so please come and join us to assist in the
planning of our senior events. Your input is both important and
appreciated!!. This month’s breakfast is scheduled for Friday
December 2nd. This is a free event; however donations are
welcome if you would like to help with the cost for this event.
RSVP is required. For future monthly Birthday Bashes, seniors
who need transit to the senior center for this event, the deadline is

RUG HOOKING IS HUGE AT CHARDON!!! Therug hooking group meets every Monday morning from 10 a.m.until noon for fun, fellowship and creativity. We make rugs, wallhangings, pillows, table mats and footstool covers. Using a hook,strips of fabric and a hoop or a frame, and using a technique utilizedin the 1800’s, one can create beautiful items for the home. AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE CLASS /ATCHARDON SENIOR CENTER Learn the basics of SignLanguage including the ASL alphabet, numbers, finger spelling,gestures, and grammar. Classes will be held on the first and thirdWednesday of each month from 1:00-2:30pm. This is a freeclass, however seniors must be registered to participate.
FIGHTING AGAINST PARKINSON’S - A NON-CONTACT BOXING & FITNESS CLASS!Fighting against Parkinson’s is a class for seniors diagnosed with orwho have early onset Parkinson’s disease whose symptoms are mild.This class, offered through the Geauga County Department on Aging,will provide non-contact boxing style fitness programs. The goal ofthis program is to delay the progression of Parkinson symptoms.Strength, speed, balance, and flexibility will be worked on through avariety of exercises and core conditioning. Improving your overallfitness levels, maintaining a strong healthy body while working onpostural imbalances and increasing your core strength will be focusedon throughout this program.

Refund Policy for the Geauga Department on AgingAs of July 1, 2016 The Department on Aging will no longer be issuing refunds for programs and events in an effort to honor ourcommitment to our vendors and transportation companies. When signing up for programs and events you become responsible
for that reservation. In the event you are unable to attend a program or event you signed up for, you may transfer yourreservation to another Geauga County Senior. If someone attends a program or event in your place you must contact the
Department on Aging with the individual’s name and contact information. In the unusual event that the Department on Agingcancels an event we will refund the ticket price via check. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
In consideration of acceptance into the above referenced program, I do hereby, for myself, release the County of Geauga andthe officials, officers, agents and employees of the County from liability for any harm, injury, or damage which I may sufferwhile participating in the above described program. ST. ANSELM’S YOUNG OFHEART normally meet on the 1st and 3rd
Friday of the month at noon at St. Anselm’s
parish center in Chesterland. However, there
will be no meetings in December other than
our Christmas Party on December 2 at
11:30. It will be held at Manakiki Country
Club in Willoughby Hills.
A Christmas trip has been planned for
December 8 to Tara, A Country Inn in
Pennsylvania, which will be beautifully
decorated for the holidays. Dinner is
included there. Also included are stops at
Daffins Chocolates, Kraynak’s Christmas
Display and more. The cost is $75 ($78 for

A trip has been planned for a Panama
Canal Cruise on March 8-18, 2017. We will
fly to Ft. Lauderdale and board the Coral
Princess. Several stops will be made. Fares
start at $2,500 (depending on cabin choice)
and include roundtrip airfare from Cleveland,
cruise, transfers to/from ship, taxes, port
charges, and government fees. Payment is

The Bainbridge/ChagrinAARP Chapter #4527 will host our
Holiday party on Tuesday, December 6th,
2016, at 1 pm. It will be at Mangia, Mangia
Italian Restaurant at 11081 Kinsman Road
(Rt.87) in Newbury. Members should call

reservations. Due to limited seating, this is
for members only, and is in lieu of our
monthly meeting.
Our trips are done for the season, and
we want to thank Skip & Marge for all their
hard work, giving us enjoyment all season
long!
Our January meeting will be Tuesday,
January 3, 2017 (weather permitting) at
1pm, at the Bainbridge Town Hall, 17826
Chillicothe Road, Bainbridge Twp. (behind
the Fire Station). Come and join us for an
interesting program, and have a nice warm
cup of coffee and a sweet treat.
If the Kenston School system is
cancelled due to the weather, our meeting
will be cancelled also. Check your television
stations for school closings.
We are still collecting food, paper
products, etc. for our “Food for Friends” food
pantry, and dog food, blankets, etc. for the
Geauga Dog Shelter. The shelves are bare
now and with the Holiday Season upon us,
they are in need of everything!

These volunteers,once trained, can deliver meals as asubstitute (when the driver is available),once a month or as often as they would like.Companies and civic groups organize theirmembers to reduce the number of timesindividuals volunteer.Meal routes aredelivered Monday through Friday and providea nutritious lunch for 10 and 15 homeboundseniors. If you are 18 years of age or older,have a valid driver’s license and proof ofinsurance, your help is needed. To help, callthe Kristen Bibby at the Geauga CountyDepartment on Aging at (440) 279-2138.
