Reflecting on the last few months of 2010, I find myself very proud of WOEA leaders and members.

When the WOEA Board of Directors voted in June to have a Fall Member Forum rather than a Representative Assembly, WOEA’s Core Function Committees led by Jimmie Tipton (Collective Bargaining), Teresa Leo (Leadership Development and Training), Linda Thomas (Professional Efficacy), Sophia Rodriguez (Member Rights and Protection), and Christine Wiseman (Organizing Strategy) met the challenge of arranging sessions for WOEA members. NEA Member Benefits and WOEA Retired also chipped in.

Change wasn’t easy. Attendance was up and evaluations overwhelmingly show that participants were more than satisfied with the event. Their responses will help the WOEA Board of Directors plan for next year’s fall meeting.

WOEA’s leaders and members also worked hard on the campaign front. WOEA members screened and recommended education candidates, canvassed neighborhoods, worked phone banks, spoke up in our work places and with family and friends to encourage people to vote and to vote for public education candidates, and voted. In WOEA, we can be proud that Clayton Luckie (HD 39) and Roland Winburn (HD 40) were re-elected.

WOEA MISSION STATEMENT The purpose of this Association shall be to afford opportunities for its members to improve their professional knowledge, to foster sound education policies, and to promote the best interest of children.

The OEA officers reported at the OEA RA that 60% of our members voted for Governor Strickland. In spite of our hard work and success in working with our own members, the general public did not support public education candidates. We have our work cut out for us to communicate with our elected officials about the importance of public education so that our working conditions allow us to serve Ohio’s students effectively.

As we worked hard to face the challenges of fall 2010, we will now work hard to face the challenges of the New Year. These will be new challenges requiring us to work in new ways and to involve even more members. We’ve done it before. We can do it again. As Dr. John H. Jackson, the DLAMC speaker, reminded us, let us never weary of doing good. Together we can. Together we will. Dawn Wojcik WOEA President

WOEA 2010 Fall Members Forum

The WOEA Board of Directors voted to change the WOEA Fall meeting from a representative assembly to a member forum. Inviting not only the RA delegates, but all WOEA members, the WOEA Core Function Committees worked hard to prepare nine workshop sessions. Over 150 members and guests attended this meeting not quite doubling the attendance of recent fall meetings. This year’s WOEA Fall Member Forum was held at Northmont High School. Prior to participating in the sessions, senior WOEA Board of Director David Young led the OEA Briefing. WOEA delegates voted to support the recommended changes to the OEA Constitution to be voted on at the December OEA Representative Assembly. WOEA Board of Director Phil Long filled in for WOEA’s representative to the OEA Legislative Committee, Linda Fisher, explaining the recommended changes to OEA’s Legislative Agenda which the delegates then voted to support.

The workshops were The Education Read, Meet and Greet with the OEA Officers, Sondra Williams speaking about Asbergers Syndrome, NEA Member Benefits Online Academy, Technology Pitfalls, New Healthcare Laws, Know Your Rights, Recruit & Retain Volunteers, and WOEA-Retired, There Is Life After School. At the conclusion of the forum, several prizes were given away: Jimmie Tipton (West Carrollton Classified EA Co-President) won a Kindle; Clarice Thomas (Xenia ESP) won a $250 Dorothy Lane Market gift certificate; Mindy Campbell (Trotwood-Madison EA President) won a $200 gift certificate to the Great Wolf Lodge; Dan LeForce (West Carrollton Classified EA Co-President) won a Canon PowerShot digital camera; and Tom Milord (Dayton EA) won an iPod Touch. At the end of the forum, members completed an evaluation. These evaluations will be used to determine how to conduct the 2011 Fall meeting.

Due to size limitations, this workshop is being limited to 10 local associations with no more than two representatives from the local. WOEA Awards Deadline WOEA offers several awards with more information on the WOEA website. Two awards with deadlines approaching on January 15, 2011 are the: • WOEA Friend of Education Award

DLAMC Dinner WOEA supported the Doris L. Allen Minority Caucus Dinner on Friday, December 3, 2010. Over twenty WOEA members including WOEA members of the OEA Board of Directors and other OEA committees enjoyed the festivities. The guest speaker was John Jackson, President and CEA of the Schott Foundation for Public Education. In his remarks as he outlined the many challenges facing public education, he reminded us to never weary of doing good. We were also entertained by the Central Ohio Drum Collective, a diverse group of drummers of various skill levels. The DLAMC also presented a speaker who spoke as Frederick Douglass.

OEA Representative Assembly WOEA delegates participated in the OEA RA where the highlight of the RA were speeches by outgoing Governor Ted Strickland and NEA President Dennis Van Roekel.

Jerry Oberhaus was elected as NEA Director 6 and Robin Jeffries was elected as a Board of Director At-Large. WOEA screened and endorsed both candidates.

There were 1,046 registered delegates at the assembly who contributed $32,647.75 to the OEA Fund for Children and Public Education.

WOEA Board of Directors Holiday Dinner The WOEA Board of Directors met at The Caroline in Troy on Tuesday, December 14, 2010. The WOEA Board was joined by OEA Vice President Bill Leibensperger and OEA Secretary Treasurer Jim Timlin.

WOEA Education Support Professional of the Year Award 2010 - 2011 Application Form

WOEA Education Support Professional of the Year Award

Some years ago, support staff were not members of the Ohio Education Association. Today, OEA/WOEA Education Support Professional members are actively involved in the Association, in bargaining, political action, community organizing, and school restructuring efforts, as partners with their teacher colleagues.

Once a year, WOEA/OEA/NEA members join school districts and communities on National Education Support Professional Day to honor the many dedicated education support staff around the nation. The WOEA Board of Directors approved a special annual honor, the WOEA Education Support Professional of the Year Award, to further emphasize the contributions of education support professionals to their schools, communities, and all education workers.

WOEA will present the Education Support Professional Award to a WOEA member whose activities reflect the contributions of education support professionals to public education. Recipients will receive a monetary award in the amount of $1000.

The award will be presented at the Spring WOEA Representative Assembly. For additional information, please contact the WOEA office: For additional information, please contact the WOEA office at 937-339-9509 /1-800-598-9632 or at [email protected].

Note: The completed official application from for the WOEA Education Support Professional of the Year Award must be returned on or before the deadline:
