Holiday traditions help buildthe foundation for familymemories.
Regardless of what religious
holiday you celebrate, familytraditions are what make thistime of year special.
The traditions that I grew upwith have continued with my
family and they are the hall-mark of our holiday celebra-tions.
Jennifer Baker grew up in a
family with a Jewish father andMexican heritage from hermothers side.
For Jewish tradition, we light
the menorah and make potatopancakes for Chanukah. ForHispanic tradition, we make anobscene amount of tamales,Baker said. Both cultures arevery surrounded by food so that
is how holidays are defined forus.
Food is often the center ofmany traditions, but for LindaDansby, one activity always sig-
nified Christmas. Her entire life, Dansby has
enjoyed doing puzzles. EachChristmas Eve, her father wouldget a new puzzle between 350and 500 pieces for the family to
do. Dansby said that it wasalways something he enjoyeddoing on Christmas Day andthe family completed the puz-zle in a couple of days.

Above, Mike Murphy proudly displays the basket-ball ornament he received last year. When givingornaments to friends and family, select an orna-ment that has a special meaning to the recipient.Giving joke gifts at the holidays may seem to bea silly tradition, but it's one that my family has hadmore smiles and laughs about than you can imag-ine. My husband Lou Brown, at right, doesn't liketo use chopsticks because he has a difficult timeusing them. A couple years ago, one of our daugh-ters gave him a chopstick-aid. The idea is to
spend very little money, but lots of imagination.

When I was a kid, mygrandmother would makeall the grandchildren newpajamas to wear onChristmas Eve. To thisday, one of my daughters
favorite parts about theholidays is being able toopen those new pajamas.
Although my daughtersare now young adults andour family has grown withthe recent addition of mynew son-in-law, theirfavorite childhood tradi-tions are still alive andwell. In addition to thepajamas, they eachreceive a new ornament.
This was another tradi-tion that my grandmotherstarted for all her grand-children.
By the time my hus-band and I got married, Ialready had a full tree ofornaments and this hasalso been the case withour girls.
The third of the threegifts that were allowedto open on Christmas Eve(because we wait to openthe rest of our gifts onChristmas morning) is themuch anticipated joke
gift. Yes, this is an unusualtradition and one that Ivenever heard of anotherfamily doing.
A month or so beforeChristmas, we exchangenames. For the person wedraw, we purchase ajoke gift for them thatrepresents something thathappened during the yearor that just relates tothem. This was started inmy mothers family and a
tradition that would makeour holidays complete. Some of the gifts are sillierthan others but theyalways make us smile, laugh and talk about whythat particular gift wasperfect for the recipient.
Maybe this list will giveyou some new ideas foryour family or youll juststick with your tried andtrue traditions.
I want to take a minuteto thank you for alwaystaking the time to readInside Lincoln, and onbehalf of myself and allthe The Lincoln NewsMessenger staff, we wantto wish you a wonderfulholiday season filled withlove and laughter withyour friends and family.
See you next year!

The holiday season hasarrived!
If you took your queuefrom the larger chain
stores, it actually arrivedseveral months ago.We have been inundat-
ed with television, radioand web-based ads to getus into the spirit. I toldsomeone last week thatit's difficult to get excitedabout holiday shoppingwhen weve been seeingthe ads and watchingChristmas trees go up inthe stores for the last
three months.I do get excited about
holiday shopping forbeing able to patronizeour local businesses. The
difference betweenshopping with our localmerchants and takingyour shopping out toanother town is that notonly do our downtown
businesses offer uniquegifts, the holiday spirittruly comes across whendealing with local busi-ness owners.
Whether it's lookingfor a gift for a coworkeror purchasing somethingfor a family member,Lincoln business ownerscan offer you somethingunique that most otherstores cant, which is the
small hometown servicethat comes from a townlike Lincoln.
Here are just a few rea-sons to shop locally:
1) Spread the wealth -
When you shop locally, those dollars multiply.Local business often dobusiness with other localbusinesses, they bank
with local banks, theysometimes advertise inThe News Messenger anduse other local servicessuch as printers, account-
ing, legal assistance, etc.
2) Contributions abound Its the local businessesthat often help supportour charitable organiza-
tions. Whether its spon-soring Rotary or KiwanisClub events, donatingmoney to fund variousprograms with the local
schools or donating in-kind contributions orfunds to other events suchas Relay For Life, its often
the small mom and popbusinesses that thesegroups turn to when theseevents roll around.

3) Service with a smile andmore - I repeatedly hear aboutliving in Lincoln that every-one is so friendly. I love walk-ing into a small store or restau-rant and having the proprietor
and staff know me by nameand sometimes know what Imlooking for to purchase or eat.Being a Bay Area transplant, over the last 12 years, I havemade a lot of friends who ownbusinesses downtown. Everytime I walk into one of thosebusinesses, I feel like Im wel-comed as if I were one of theirfamily members.
4) Nothing generic in your
shopping cart The downtownshops are going to offer uniqueitems for your shopping list.Even if youre looking to pur-chase something genericsuch as soap or candles, thosesometimes mundane itemswill take on a very personal-ized aspect when you pur-chase them locally. All the
shops Ive run across that sellthese items sell either hand-made, custom or locally-made
soaps and candles. There reallyis nothing ordinary aboutthem.
5) Save money! - What thehigh-profile chain stores try toconvey in their ads is that youll
save money by shopping there.Even if the item is less expen-sive, however, other factorssuch as driving 30 to 60 minutesmake it so you dont save themoney you anticipated. The
cost of fuel, wear and tear onyour car, having to stop forsomething to eat becauseyouve spent several hours run-ning in and out of stores, not tomention what your time isworth, are all going to makethat item less of a deal than youoriginally thought.
Regardless of the time of yearyoure shopping, dont forgetabout your local merchants.
Youll receive a great product, excellent service and youllrecycle your hard-earned mon-ey back into the economy.
Who knows? Maybe youllshop for a gift and walk out of astore by making a new friendwith the proprietor. What bettergift to give yourself than a newfriend?
What holiday season wouldbe complete without a visitto Santa? One of Santas
favorite stops is alwaysLincoln Florist. Be sure to seeSanta on Dec. 7. He'll bewalking around to greet allyoung kids and young atheart.
Regardless of the time of
year youre shopping,
dont forget about your
local merchants. Youll
receive a great product, excellent service and
youll recycle your hard-
earned money back into
the economy.

My daughters are grown and the days of handmadeprojects from school are all but a distant memory.
Some of the items they created have survived manyChristmas holidays as the items have been removed
from the box where theyre lovingly stored year afteryear.
I treasure each gift the girls have made my husbandand me. I am always a little sad when I have to retiresomething because it broke beyond repair one toomany times.
With so many restrictions that have been put on theschools and teachers, holiday projects are not alwayssomething that can be created these days. But everychild should feel that joy of making something specialfor a friend or family member and each parent shouldbe able to look in their childs eyes to see the pure lovewith which the gift was created.
I remember being so excited as a child to give a hand-made gift to my parents that I could hardly avoid givingthem the gift early.
Here are some projects you can make with your child. In years to come, when they are 6 inches taller than you, these treasures will remind you of how they were onceso small.
Its little mementoes like these that help preserve yourkids childhoods and remind us that life is all too fleet-ing.

Once the snowmen are dry, paint on coal but-tons, eyes and mouth, as well as carrot nose.

INSIDE LINCOLN
With cookie exchanges being a sta-ple of the holiday season, I wantedto take the opportunity to share a
couple of recipes that are a staple in myhouse. One of them has been in the fam-ily for generations and is always part ofthe holiday cookie repertoire and theother is one that I havent made long butfriends cant get enough of.
Chewy Noels are something that mygrandmother made every year. Mygrandmother lived with us during mostof my childhood so we would watch hermake dozens and dozens of cookies andthen freeze them. Although she startedbaking in November, and she thoughtshe'd make plenty for the holiday sea-son, her four grandkids would alwaysfind their way to the cookies and deplete
her supply, thereby causing even morework for her.
Im sure we thought it was funny at thetime, but now that Im an adult, I canonly imagine how much extra work wecreated for her. At one point, my parentsdecided they needed a larger freezer, andmuch to my grandmothers delight, theypurchased one with a lock on it.
I do remember, however, that she nev-er was able to hide the key without one
of us finding it so I think grandma gaveup and just realized she needed to con-tinue baking those cookies.
I cant make, or eat, a Chewy Noelwithout thinking of Grandma Wandaand all the years I watched her bakethem. The recipe calls for walnuts, but if
you're allergic to them like I am, you cansubstitute another nut or even leave thenuts out altogether.
Bake cookies to bring the
holiday spirit to your house
CHEWY NOELSYOU WILL NEED
2 tablespoons butter
1 cup packed brown sugar
5 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/8 teaspoon baking soda2 beaten eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup chopped walnuts/nut of your
choice (or omit them altogether)
1/4 cup confectioners' sugar for dust-
ing
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.Melt the butter in a square bakingdish. Tilt the dish to coat all sides.Grandma found that putting it inthe refrigerator to let the butterharden a bit helped keep the
cookies from sticking. In a medium bowl, stir togetherthe brown sugar, flour and bakingsoda. Mix in the eggs and vanilla. Then stir in the walnuts. Pour overthe melted butter but do not stir.
Bake in a preheated oven for 20minutes or until the edges beginto brown. Cool, cut into squares, then dust with powdered sugar.

YOU WILL NEED
1 package (8 ounces) softened cream cheese

6 ounces melted white chocolate
1/3 cup finely chopped pecans (or your nut of choice)
2 ounces melted semi-sweet chocolate
Mix cream cheese, cookie crumbs and bananas.Shape into 1-inch balls and dip them into melted white chocolate. Place on a
wax paper-lined pan and then sprinkle with nuts and drizzle with melted choco-late.
Refrigerate 1 hour (or until firm).
DECEMBER 2013 INSIDE LINCOLN 9
Chocolate, banana and cookies make these Christmas Balls delicious! Iactually make these all year, but by the addition of some colored whitechocolate, you could make these festive for the holidays. Feel free to sub-stitute peanut butter for the cream cheese and graham crackers for thecookies.
This is a recipe that I often makethroughout the year but its great at holi-day time, as well.
The bananas add a freshness to some ofthe heavier items we consume at the hol-idays and they can also be changed up for
a holiday flair. Although it calls for achocolate drizzle, I sometimes dip them inchocolate and Ive thought about using
colored white chocolate to make themeven more festive. The great aspect aboutthis cookie is that its a no-bake item. When your oven is full of other holidaysweets, you can make this one on the side.
By substituting the cream cheese for
peanut butter and the vanilla wafers forgraham crackers, you can create a verydifferent version of this cookie.

Even with all the choic-es, many customers stillopt for the classic red ones.
Some of the unusualones that are also verypopular are jingle bells(red with white splotchesthat look like someonesplattered white paint onthem), she said. Cortez
burgundy is another pop-ular one. Ice Punch isprobably the newest one.Its very popular with alighter pink in the centerand darker pink towardthe edge of the bracts.

Smaller pots require

BY TRISH GRENFELLPLACER COUNTY MASTER GARDENER
Question: What is thedifference between a frostand a freeze and howdoes each affect plants?
Answer: To answer yourvery astute questionabout the affect of cold ongrowing plants, I mustadd a third category: achill, which can damagesome plants by injuringtheir parts with tempera-
tures above the freezingpoint. If you purchased the
plant, it is likely that youreceived information giv-ing you the lowest tem-perature the plant couldsustain without injury.Plants of tropical or sub-tropical origin are mostsusceptible. Chilling-injured leaves maybecome purple or reddish
and in some cases wilt. Both flowers and fruit ofsensitive species can beinjured.
In defining a freeze vs. afrost, I think it is impor-tant to know how theNational Weather Serviceuses those terms.
When your local mete-orologist issues an adviso-ry in spring or fall, this iswhat he/she is means: 1)Frost is when the temper-ature of the Earths surfacefalls below 32 degreescausing the formation ofthin ice crystals that can
cover the ground and oth-er cold surfaces. 2) Freezeis when the temperatureis expected to remainunder 32 degrees for anextended period of time.
These terms are impor-tant to know becauseboth can drastically affectgrowth. Since a frost aloneis temporary, all you mayneed to do is protect ten-der plants by covering
them or bringing themindoors the night before afrost is predicted. You canthen uncover them once
the temperature climbsback up during the day. Afreeze, meanwhile, gener-ally spells the end of thegrowing season for tenderplants.
For more informationon how frost and freezesactually injure the plants(using slightly different
definitions of the terms),please read pages 133 to138 in Abiotic Disordersof Landscape Plants: aDiagnostic Guide. (UCPublication 3420).

The most commonmistakes are over water-ing or under watering. The plants also needcareful handling theyare very brittle so theybreak easily.
They are intolerant ofweather, Davis said. Ifyou take them out in therain, it will spot the
bracts. Because they arebrittle, the wind candamage the branches.
When choosing poin-settias, make sure the lit-tle flowers in the centerare not open yet or just
starting to open. Whenthey are fully
open, it is a sign the plantis older and will have lesstable or shelf life to it, sheexplained.
At Avantgarden inDowntown Auburn, own-er Kim Wright said sheuses a lot of poinsettias indecorating her home forChristmas.
To add color to herlarge potted plants, sheputs a row of 4-inch con-tainers of poinsettiasaround the inside edge.
So all you can see isthe foliage, she said.
Theyre also great for atable.
Put poinsettias in abasket and stick in somepots of ivy for a nice lowcenterpiece, she said.
Or use the flowers tobrighten the entryway larger poinsettias will cre-ate more wow factor.
Put them on thefloor, inside, beside
the front door,Wright said. Itmakes the whole
entryway lookfestive,

ecently, a 20/20 televisionepisode promoted its dirtylittle secrets investigations,
attempting to expose the under-belly of different professions, including veterinarians.
The gentleman veterinarianinterviewed for this segmentconfessed to routinely sellingunneeded services and diagnos-tic tests to unsuspecting clients, playing on their emotionalattachment, claiming that it wasa fairly common practice.
Friends and colleagues in theprofession found his revelationto be particularly offensive. When the background of thisgentleman was reviewed, itturns out that he had lost his vet-erinary license and was nolonger in private practice.
Is this a gentleman with somesort of ax to grind? Or is this a
person, as my mother taughtme, accusing others of what hehimself is capable of doing?
