Great Expectations?

There is some disquiet around North Grenville regarding the performance of Mayor Gordon. Some, most particularly those who supported him in the election last year, are disappointed with what they’ve seen so far. As someone who obviously supported him in his election campaign, I, too, shared that sense of disappointment for a while. It seemed that he was invis-ible, perhaps overwhelmed by the new job.

But I had to do some serious thinking about this, and I realised that I had been expecting some-thing that was, not unrealistic, but actually unwelcome. Let me explain: for seven years we had a mayor who governed in a very idiosyncratic manner. To put it bluntly, I think he was a bully who misused his position to engage in personal attacks on critics. He used the Mayor’s Chair in Council as a bully pulpit - a position from which he could indulge in spiteful and vitriolic attacks on the integrity of his opponents (and, yes, I was one of them).

Seven years of this, and I think we began to simply accept his definition of the role of a mayor. As I thought over my feelings of disappointment regarding David Gordon, I came to a very disturbing realisation. My actual expectation of the new mayor was that now we would have a mayor who would use the office as a bully pulpit on our side! I wanted to see David Gordon act like his predecessor, only in the cause of Right and the Righteous. I wanted to see him speak out in Council in support of what I thought was right and impor-tant and to chastise the powers of darkness. But if what his predeces-sor did was an abuse of the office, then such action by Mayor Gordon would be just as much an abuse. Is that what I really wanted? Well...yes, actually. But I was wrong.

David Gordon is actually drag-

ging us back to a proper understand-ing of the role of a mayor in our system of municipal government. He sees himself as a manager, a chair of Council, not the Boss. He deserves a great deal of credit for this, like it or not. Do I think he is doing a perfect job? No, I don’t. I would love to see some move towards a larger Council, more inclusion of the public, action on our water supply in Kemptville, and so many other things. I know there’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes, but I think there is room for far better and extensive communication with the public. He must be a leader in that. But he is working with four other individuals, and that requires some-thing more than simply bullying and unilateral decision-making. The danger of David Gordon’s approach is that it can allow strong personali-ties to dominate, unless checked. We want strong public representatives on Council, and their actions can be analysed and criticised by the electorate to a large extent. The Newsletter has offered free space in our pages to all members of Council to write a periodical “report” to their constituents. No one has yet taken up our offer. They should: they can publish it elsewhere too, if they wish.

But when the domineering per-sonalities are not publicly answer-able, we have a problem. And that is the other source of disquiet in North Grenville: the fact that certain staff members, or one at least, seem to be taking over the direction of things. More and more people have had scathing things to say about how they have been treated in meet-ings with staff. The lack of respect shown, the way in which what ap-pears to be inaccurate information is being given to the public and the Council on matters of public con-cern, has led to disquiet and dismay. It may be that the removal of one domineering personality through an election has allowed another to fill the power vacuum, and that could be a disaster for us all. Staff are our employees and should be constantly aware of that fact. In 99% of cases, they do act with integrity and profes-sionalism.

The others should be aware that their behaviour is not going unnoticed. There is a limit to how much the public will take. In the meantime, we look to David Gor-don and Council to lead and follow, collegial, responsible and with the wonderful task of keeping all of us happy all the time!

Adult Development:Active Listening - Key to a Satisfying Christmas Season

One of the most underrated and underused skills in ongoing human

relations is active listening. Active listening occurs when one person chooses to be present to another through the quality of their listening. It is a purposeful choice to more carefully listen to someone who is important to us, or someone who simply needs to be heard.

The person who is the recipient of our active listening can be our spouse, partner, child, boyfriend, girlfriend, neighbour, co-worker, or any person in need. I was once at a public presentation by Jean Vanier, the founder of the L’Arche Communities, where the power of active listening was clearly illustrated. He had fi nished his talk and two mi-crophones were opened for questions. After a couple of people spoke, a middle-aged woman took one of the microphones and began to talk. Her talk went on to become a rant about a number of things in society. It became unclear as to whether this person was of sound mind. Most people would have just called for security and had the person removed. Some of the 300 or so in the audience were becoming impatient with the situation. However, Jean Vanier chose to carefully listen to and validate what this woman was trying to say.

The point I want to make here is that once this person felt listened to and heard in what she felt she needed to say, she was able to turn over the microphone on her own. By his example, Jean Vanier showed us all what in-depth listening was all about. It may not be easy, but we need it if we are to be able to hear each other in our depths. From this example, we can see that it is quite helpful if we can consciously center ourselves in our compassion, empathy, or love for the person. I have witnessed anger dissipated, and hope revived with this simple tool of an active, listening presence. What a precious gift to offer to someone you know. This is, for me, the true spirit of the season. Our presence is one of the truly priceless gifts that we can give at any time of the year.

Upcoming Workshop: “My Relationship with the Christmas Season”- Thurs. Dec. 15th – 6:30-9:30pm

What is Christmas to you?

Have you ever given yourself the opportunity to really explore what the Christmas Season means for you? Do you anticipate it with excite-ment? Do you loathe its approach? Is it a life-giving time of your year? Can you not wait for it to be over? Is it relevant for you? Is it a time of spiritual deepening? What makes your Christmas Season memorable and worthwhile? What has your best Christmas consisted of? What could happen to make this Christmas the best that you have ever experienced? What could you do to actualize this best ever Christmas? These and other Christmas-related questions will be explored in a 3hr workshop called “My Relationship with the Christmas Season” on Thursday, December 15 , 2011 from 6:30pm-9:30pm at KDH in Kemptville, Ontario. Grammar Minute Sit back and relax! It is Holiday Time! Ain't this a great time to celebrate? What? You dare contract am and

not into that terrible word! Ain't at one time was considered illiterate, col-loquial and dialectal. But now, thanks to social media, ain't is occasionally used informally by educated persons. What's a poor mother to do?

Gobbledygook: no, it is not the name applied to turkey jargon. The word was coined by a Texas congressman after attendance at a committee meeting. The dialogue at that session reminded him of turkey gobblers and the sound they make as they strut about.

Example: Feathered bipeds of similar plumage will live gregariously. Please translate into direct English.

How do you pronounce debut? de - BYOO? DAY - boo? DAY - byoo?Is it a verb or is it a noun? Try it in a sentence.

What are you doing when you proselytize?Does it only apply to religion?

You can thank Sally Ann for this abbreviated version of Grammar Minute. My next few weeks will be spent preparing Christmas Hampers. Drop in to see us behind Cheeky Monkey (in space once occupied by the Farah Dance Studio).

KRAFT FOOD for FAMILIES

For most of us, the holiday season is a time of celebration with lots of great food. But for some families it can be a chal-lenging time for the simple reason that there is not enough food to go around. That’s why Kraft Food for Families is supporting local food banks across Canada this holiday season.

Show your support between November 3, 2011 and January 31, 2012, just add your name. It is as easy as going to www.kraftassists.ca and entering your name to support us. If we get 1000 names the House of Lazarus will receive $1000, and Kraft Food Canada will donate $1 to your choice of 1 of 30 local food banks. The Kemptville Library is pleased to present a book read-ing by local artist-naturalist Aleta Karstad, with her biologist hus-band Fred Schueler, on Saturday, 10 December at 1:30 pm.

Art & Science in the South Nation Watershed is a full-colour book of paintings and journal from this fall's travels about east-ern Ontario, enriched by 15 years of familiarity with the South Na-tion River watershed.

In the tradition of the Group of Seven but with the eye of a naturalist, Aleta Karstad paints the Canadian landscape "au plein air". This book showcases nine-teen of her jewel-like paintings from the watershed of the South Nation River in easternmost On-tario. Each is accompanied by in-sightful and lyrical journal entries about the experience of making each painting and about the land-scape and its plants and animals. While Aleta paints, her biologist husband, Fred Schueler, makes a scientifi c survey of the surround-ing area, giving special attention to the interactions between native

and invasive species. Together, this artist/biologist team works to increase public knowledge of not only the beauty of the landscape but also its biological health and the conservation measures sug-gested by their observations.

Aleta will read selections from the book and answer ques-tions about her love of painting outdoors, and Fred can be tapped for his extensive knowledge about everything that grows, hops, crawls or swims in eastern Ontario. See Aleta's original paintings and have Aleta and Fred both autograph your copy of Art & Science in the South Nation Watershed. The book can also be previewed and purchased at lulu.com - just search for the title.

More of Aleta's paintings can be seen at aletakarstad.com

The long wait is over and I’m happy that Canada’s best AC/DC tribute band is still going strong at full volume. Albert, Scott, Drew, Ted and Rick make up Great Scott- a band that has been crank-ing out AC/DC covers across Canada since 1994. Appearances at festivals, a few line-up changes and tours have made this band a powerful machine that only gets stronger. The members have come from local bands to form this tribute which by this time have

clearly perfected their sound. Years of performance and practice have gone into each of these songs which couldn’t sound more similar to the originals. On Saturday 26th, Great Scott played a flawless set of AC/DC covers at The Kemptville Pub, a perfect place to listen since AC/DC started out as a bar band.

No other band can get your pulse racing like AC/DC, the first truly intense band in rock. Pure, pounding energy in each song builds up to an adrenaline rush in the listener. Whether you dance or headbang, everybody listening shows that energy and most people understand why it’s important.

Songs written in the ‘70’s,

Great Scott is at the Top

Alex Buys

when the legendary Bon Scott fronted the group, have always been the favorites of serious fans. Being fans themselves, Great Scott know what people want to hear. They know that anybody familiar with the band, either an obsessive or occasional listener, would have a hard time picking out a song they dislike. Playing the songs of a timeless band must never get tiresome when every song is good. After hearing so many classic songs, it was interesting when the band would fast forward to a more recent number and the singer would have to adjust his vocal style to the sound of Brian Johnston- Bon Scott’s replacement after his death

in 1980. Since the Great Scott singer’s voice sounds so similar to Bon’s, anything from Back In Black (Bon’s unfinished album) would have sounded the way the original band intended. Whether or not any original recordings exist of Bon singing his Back In Black material, this was a rare chance to hear what could have been Bon Scott’s greatest album.

In one evening Great Scott will play songs from any stage in AC/DC’s career. The band members had the right moves along with the look, playing their respective members without being theatrical. This made it a very memorable show and lets hope the band keeps playing these songs that keep Bon’s spirit alive.

It has been a very busy time indeed for the NGHS. We made a presentation to Council last month, asking that our rent of $3,000 per an-num at the Archives be abolished. An amazing number of e-mails were sent to Council in support of our request, and the Society is very grateful in-deed for that. They came from as far

away as Australia and Scotland, and from every Community Association in North Grenville. Although we have not yet received a formal response from Council, we are hopeful that our request will be granted, allow-ing us to use what funds we have on developing our archives.

Council encouraged us to help

ourselves through fundraising efforts, and we have responded immediately. We hope to have a pictorial history of North Grenville published by Christmas: a 140-page, hardback, colour publication of a selection of photographs from our archives. The book will cost $30 and all proceeds will go the Society and Archives. We have had very generous support from individuals and sponsors in the com-munity, who had donated to the cost of publishing the book. This, too, is hugely appreciated.

Overall, the NGHS is humbled and thrilled by the level of support shown to the Society and Archives over this past year. We are growing and having a larger role in our com-munity. Our next meeting, on Janu-ary 11, will be our Annual General Meeting, a very important date in the calendar. We need new members for our Executive. After their term has expired, according to our Constitu-tion, we will need a new President, Vice-President, Archivist and Secre-tary. It would be very helpful to add one or two others as well. If you are interested in any of these positions, or just in serving as a Member at Large on the Executive, do let me know before the meeting. [email protected]

More information about the AGM and how to get copies of the new book: North Grenville - Glimps-es of the Past - will be published in next month’s Newsletter.

Dear Editor,I just read the "History Page"

article by David Shanahan on "Newspapers in North Grenville" and enjoyed it thoroughly from start to finish! North Grenville has been made so much richer by our local historians, who take the time, not only to preserve the history of our area, but who delve into our local ar-chives, researching different topics, and shaing what they find! David is a real asset to our community!

We recently attended Doug Hendry's talk, "The Upside of Peak Oil" at the Branch Restaurant, and he's another of these awesome people with a passion for local his-tory - not only did we learn more about many aspects of oil, but we were shown the history of oil use in North Grenville, from documents and photos from our own local history. I believe that we can make wise decisions about our future, only with reference to the past. Thanks to neighbours with a passion for history, the people of North Gren-ville are learning more about where they live!

10 New Toddler Childcare Spaces in Kemptville!

North Grenville Cooperative Preschool and Learning Centre is launching a new toddler program! Ten childcare spaces for children aged 18 months to 2 ½ years old, will be ready to accept children on January 09, 2012.

NGCPLC has been in operation now for eight years and offers high quality, licensed childcare for children 2 ½ - 12 years of age at it’s two sites - Leahurst, on U. of Guleph campus for children under 6 and at Kemptville Public School, for children 6 - 12 yrs. With the implementation of Full Day Learning for Kindergarten aged children in Ontario, NGC-PLC is making this move to include a Toddler aged program in order to maintain enrolment and to respond to the community’s growing need for licensed childcare spaces for children 2 ½ and younger.

Over the years NGCPLC has earned a reputation of excellence in the quality of pro-grams offered. The lunch program is very well received, offering delicious, nutritious meals and snacks - all prepared from “scratch”. No prepared or processed foods are served. NGCPLC is committed to an environment of healthy food and relaxed, happy eating!

The E.L.F (Ontario’s Early Learning Framework) curriculum is designed to give the children experiences in: creative art, music and movement, drama, children’s literature, socialization and self-awareness, large and small muscle development, cognitive de-velopment, science, group and independent learning experiences, theme exploration, accepting special visitors, fi eldtrips and spe-cial celebration days. Teacher-directed and child-initiated learning strategies are used to enhance E.L.F.’s fi ve developmental domains (Social, Emotional, Language, Cognitive, and Physical Development). Daily program plans are designed to provide a stimulating variety of activities in the arts, literacy, science, math, social studies and fi ne/gross motor skills, en-hancing the development of each child. Most importantly, we focus on nurturing a positive sense of self esteem!

A few minor renovations, to meet li-censing requirements, are underway and additional teachers are required to put the fi nishing touches on the new Toddler program. NGCPLC Board of Directors and teachers are excited and pleased to be able to continue to offer a warm, caring and happy childcare en-vironment to the families of North Grenville!

T’was the night before Christmas and all through the gym

All the elves were assembled, looking healthy and slim.

The spin bikes were waiting, all shined up with care

In the hope that Saint Nicholas soon would be there.

The elves took their places, setting their feet in the cages,

Warming up for another of those tough Tour de France stages.

While some heads sported kerchiefs and some sported caps

They all adjusted their head gear as the Spin Meister spun rap.

The moon was full and bright off the snow

Pouring in through the windows, on the glistening bodies below

And the Spin Meister yelled, “come on! Let’s pick up the pace!”

The Hoot’n Nannas and Poppas are Retiring

It happens to every great band - the Beatles went their separate ways in 1970. REM broke up just this month. Now it’s the turn of North Grenville’s own Hoot’n Nannas and Poppas. As of the beginning of Decem-ber, the band have decided to call it quits and give someone else a chance. In the summer of 2007 some of the future members of the Hoot’n Nannas and Poppas got together at Lilah Beach’s for an afternoon of old time music and singing. From there an idea was born to invite a few more and have regular get-togethers. A few more heard about it and were anxious to join.

Thus the band was formed and as they were all members of Kemptvile and District Home Support, they decided, if they were asked to entertain, to re-quest an honorarium on behalf of that organisation.

From there, the band has moved on to play at the Dande-lion Festival, Bayfield Nursing Home, and anywhere else they were invited. Much fun was had, great entertainment was provided to a great many people, and a good time was had by all. As one member says: “We have enjoyed each other in the band and have had a lot of fun entertaining seniors. Age has caught up with some of us, and we feel the time has come to be entertained instead of entertain-ing”. For all those who have enjoyed the music and singing, we say a big “Thank You” to the Hoot’n Nannas and Poppas for all they have done to bring fun and laughter to so many people in our community over the past four years.

The names of those in the picture reading from left to right are - Dorothy Ralph, Sylvia Hesketh, Marg Milton, Donalda Long, Graydon Abbott, Mary Carter, Lilah Beach (sitting at piano), Bernie Patterson, Hugh Stewart (in front), Alec Hesketh, Harold Patterson. Donalda Long is deceased and Alec and Sylvia Hesketh are now in a Nurs-ing Home in Brockville.

DEBRA GERYLO, PIXELS & PRINT DESIGN I met Debra at a North Grenville

Business Builders breakfast meeting and my fi rst impression was of a woman with energy, enthusiasm and warmth. Later on, when we met to discuss how best to improve our newsletter’s website, her passion for design and for helping busi-nesses to succeed really came out. She made me feel completely taken care of because she is amazingly knowledgeable about all things web related. But before we talk about the Debra of today, let’s see how she came to be a valued member of our business community.

For over thirty years Debra has worked in the graphic design industry in the private sector, the public sector and now as an entrepreneur running Pixels & Print Design out of her home based offi ce in Spencerville. She began her design journey at Metropolitan Life Insurance in forms management then switched to a small start-up typesetting company in Ottawa working long hours and helping to build that business into a success. She then moved on to an advertising agency in Calgary. Although Debra loved the fast pace she missed her family and moved back to Ottawa where she worked for a short period in forms management for Veterans Affairs. Craving more challenge than a government pace, back into the

private sector she went, moving into the ad agency world.

Everything changed in 1986 with the introduction of the Macintosh computer into the world of graphic design and here is where Debra really came in to her own. She loved the challenge of continuous learning the computer age offered and honed her design skills so much she became known as the ‘go to’ person for new design software. “I learn something new every day” says Debra, which is why her career in graphic design and advertis-ing for various companies in Ottawa was such a positive experience. She happily continued until 2009 when a vacation was in order.

Never one to do anything half way, Debra and her husband Greg drove their motorhome for a year exploring the won-ders of thirty states and four provinces. After this adventure on wheels, they parked the RV and returned to Spencer-ville. Refreshed and ready to go back to work, Debra started her current company Pixels & Print Design.

Pixels & Print Design is a one stop shop for small businesses — especially new businesses who don’t know where to start. They offer web design, print design and marketing focusing in on what you specifi cally need to succeed in

today’s world. From designing high traffi c web pages to logos, brochures and signage, they will affordably develop your brand to best market your services with creativity and intelligence. Debra fi nds this work very exciting and the best thing about operating this company for her is the success of their clients and watching their businesses grow.

To learn more about Pixels & Print Design go to www.PixelsAndPrint.ca and to contact Debra email her at [email protected] or give her a call at 613-658-5598.

She’d love to help you succeed.By Margaret Morin

Managing Your MoneyHaving ‘the talk’ with your parents

Maybe you’ve already had ‘the talk’ with your kids. Well, now’s the time to have ‘the talk’ with your parents. The anxious moments and uncomfortable feelings may be the same but the topic is decidedly different. You need to talk to your parents about their health and fi nancial issues now before a crisis occurs that can reduce their estate planning options and increase costs. While their health allows it, your parents should be involved in making decisions regarding their living arrangements, level of care, and estate planning. Your role is to be a supporter and information gatherer. Here are some tips for getting ‘the talk’ going: -Offer an opening – your parents may be waiting for an opportunity to have this discussion; you can provide it. -Use ice-breaking strategies like offering help with their estate and retire-ment planning. -Keep in mind that your parents want and need to maintain their independence and dignity. -Listen – try to understand their fears and anxieties. -Here’s what you should include in the discussion: -Sources of income – including any changes in monthly income should one of them die. -Investments – as well as benefi ciaries for their registered investments. -Expenses – will their income (including government aid) cover their expenses as they are likely to escalate with age? -Insurance – what coverage do they have; are there holes that need to be fi lled? -Existing wills – have they designated personal representative (executor/liquidator) to wind up their affairs and distribute their assets according to their wills? -Enduring powers of attorney for property (in Québec, mandates in anticipa-tion of incapacity) – be sure they have appointed someone to make fi nancial decisions on their behalf should they become incapacitated. -Powers of attorney for personal care, living wills, health care directives – be sure they have appointed someone to make personal and health care decisions on their behalf should they become incapacitated -Location – know where their wills and other legal papers are kept; know the location and content of their bank accounts and safety deposit boxes.

Having ‘the talk’ with your parents can be diffi cult but the benefi ts of knowing their wishes can be extraordinary. There are many fi nancial and estate planning strategies available to your parents. A professional advisor can provide a valuable outside perspective and help sort out the details and ease the awkwardness of ‘the talk’.

Le groupe The French Connexion remercie l’équipe de The Crusty Baker

Merry Christmas! Anouk Tremblay
