Swim Season Is on in DecaturDecatur Active Living offers a vari-ety of summer aquatic programs. Ebster pool will be open May 25-July 28. Glenlake and McKoy will remain open through Labor Day. Post-season hours once school begins: McKoy Pool will be open on weekdays 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Glenlake Pool will be open 4-8 p.m. Both pools will be open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on weekends in August and Sep-tember 1-2. Pools are managed by Dynamo Pool Management, Inc. Trinity Place at Atlanta Avenue, next to the Beacon Hill Center, which is under construction.

Decatur Pool Guidelines• Large floats or inner tubes are not accept-
able because they obstruct the view of the lifeguards.
• Water guns, throwing toys or other items that may cause harm are prohibited. Pour-ing toys and small floating toys for tots are allowed. Safety of items will be deter-mined by the pool staff.
• Children may only wear Coast Guard-approved PFDs with close parental super-vision.
• Patrons swimming with children who wear diapers must use leak-proof baby swimsuits or swim diapers.
• Swim diapers are available at the front desk.
• We encourage parents to accompany their children to the pool and to supervise them closely while they are in the water. We also ask parents to discuss pool safety rules with their children and to encourage respect for pool rules and staff. All children under 14 must be accompanied by some-one over the age of 14 to be admitted into the pool.
• Shallow end of the pool is reserved for children 5 years and younger with an ac-companying adult.
• No cotton tee shirts or shorts allowed, as cloth fibers clog the pool filters.

Group PoliciesGroups of 10 or more must have a reservation to assure adequate supervision and prevent overcrowding of the pool. To make a reservation contact Aquatics Director Kyle Morton for approval of swim time and an appointment to complete a Group Swim Agreement. Decatur Active Living and Children and Youth Ser-vices programs have priority scheduling for group swimming. Call 404-377-7231 for more information.
1. Youth groups (day care, camps, etc.) must have a 1 to 12 ratio of supervisors/counselors to youth.
2. If there are children under age 5 in the group, the ratio of supervisors/counsel-ors to youth must be 1 to 6.
3. Groups must sign an agreement and:• Come at a scheduled time only• Adhere to staff/child ratios• Provide general supervision of youth• Provide supervision of group belongings• Comply with all pool rules• Non-swimming counselors are not allowed.
Failure to comply will result in termination of the Group Swim Agreement.
Special Event DaysStarting in June, the aquatics staff will have Special Event Days at each of the pools throughout the summer. The event dates and times will be posted a week in advance at each pool. Make sure your family does not miss out on the fun!

To join, you must be able to swim 25 meters and be comfortable in deep water. Gators will be tested during the first practice to ensure swimming capabilities. This is not a water adjustment or learn-to-swim experience. Practices are held at Ebster Pool; away meets at DeKalb County pools. The fee includes practices and meets Monday-Thursday.
How to Reserve a Decatur PoolDecatur pools are rented on a first-come basis. They may be reserved for private parties June 1-Sept. 3. To rent a pool you must fill out a reservation form at least two weeks prior to the rental and pay for the party. Rates listed here vary in price ac-cording to the number of people attending the function. The count includes all people walking through the door whether swimming or just watching.

and DeKalb County competition. Swim meets are held at Agnes Scott and DeKalb County pools. There will be a swim meet every Tuesday starting May 26 for five weeks. The county meet takes place July 2-3.
Intermediate swimmers must be able to swim freestyle/backstroke and have a basic understanding of the breaststroke and butterfly. Chil-dren must be able to swim 300 yards at one time with their face in the water. Swimmers must be able to swim 200 yards between start and end of practice. Advanced swimmers are able to swim all four strokes and can breathe bilaterally (on each side of their body).
Mini Gators • 4-12 yrs191090-02 • $130/$105 • Practice: 4:30-5:15 p.m., M-ThFor swimmers who want to join the Gators but aren’t able to swim 25 meters, we offer the Mini Gators team. This session helps the swimmer get ready to compete. Participants will not swim in meets until they are able to swim 25 meters and are comfortable in deep water, but they will be able to attend meets and cheer on the Ga-tors. Children must not be afraid of the water and must have no problems placing the entire head under the water. They must be independent swimmers with the ability to do a basic freestyle. Dog paddling is not considered independent swimming.
Gator Parents – Volunteers Needed!The Gators need volunteers as timers, judges and scorekeepers. A parents meeting will be held prior to the first meet at Ebster Pool. In case of rain, the meeting will be held in Ebster Gym, 404 W. Trinity Place. For additional Gator information, call 404-377-7231.
Aquatic Fun for Young OnesAt swim camp, children can improve their swimming techniques and meet new friends. All camps are led by water safety instructors, who balance instruction with games and free swim. Instructor/camper ratio is 1:6. The fee includes instructor, supplies and snacks.

After-School Programs 2013-2014Mission: Possible!In the 2013-14 school year Decatur’s seven after-school programs will explore the world of possibilities through the frameworks of science, art, language, so-cial studies, and mathematics. In an article on global learning, authors Menten, Krishnamurthi and Tang wrote, “OST (Out-of-school time) provides the opportu-nity to go beyond the textbook and traditional disciplinary boundaries . . . Global competence . . . requires that students apply knowledge and skills from multiple disciplines to the complex world around them.” (AfterSchool Today, 2013).
Our project-based learning format coupled with a wide range of enrichment activities and evidence-based curricula provide an environment for developing that global competence in participants. Decatur’s After-School programs are of-fered in collaboration with City Schools of Decatur, with coordinated curriculum related to technology, tutoring for students needing additional academic support, fine arts and enrichment activities, physical activity, healthy food choices, and socio-emotional development. Animal Crackers serves kindergarten through 3rd grade children at five locations. The program provides age-appropriate ac-tivities in an open-choices environment, in-cluding daily opportunities for enrichment, social skills building, and physical activity. The Whiz Kids program at Fifth Avenue Academy promotes higher-level skills and activities appropriate for 4th and 5th grad-ers. Students have a strong voice in the design of the program with opportunities to take leadership roles and try new things. Project REAL at Renfroe Middle School engages youth in planning special-interest classes, activities and community service projects. Youth at the middle school can be a part of the program every day or choose short-term classes on topics that interest them throughout the school year. Parent Orientation for after-school pro-grams will be Wednesday, July 24, 5:30 p.m., at Decatur Recreation Center. Join us to meet site directors and administrative staff members, receive a Parent Handbook and a program overview. All after-school pro-grams open on the first day of school.

CYS provides care for students on teacher workdays and weeklong breaks. This allows parents to be at work and gives the children a day with friends from other after-school sites. Children not enrolled in the after-school program are eligible to attend all-day camps. Registration is limited.

Big Kids Camp • Grades 4-8Resident: $45/day • Nonresident: $50/dayStudents attending Big Kids Camp (4th-8th) meet at Decatur Recreation Center and proceed on a field trip or participate in a service learning project that day. Lunch and snack are included in the cost of camp.
Limited financial assistance for after-school programs, all-day camps and summer camps is available on a sliding scale for residents who demonstrate a need.
@ Camp 2013Decatur offers more than 101 different camp sessions this summer and spaces are filling up fast! Camps take place during the day and are offered in full- and half-day sessions. Extended hours are available for an additional fee at select camps. Summer Day Camps include McKoy Safari Camp for rising K-5th graders, Glenlake Discovery Camp for rising K-5th graders, Ebster Explorer Camp for ris-ing K-5th graders, and D.R.E.A.M. Camp for rising 6th-8th graders. Pick up a copy at the Decatur Recreation Center or download the March 2013 Playbook from Decatur’s website via the Playbook link on the Active Living or Children and Youth Services pages of the site to plan for your summer. Summer Special Interest Camps focus on a particular area of interest for the entire camp day. These include a range of 75 different sports, aquatics, and en-richment camps offered throughout the summer. Some examples of interest ar-eas offered in camps this summer are: tennis, fencing, basketball, football, chess, jewelry, Spanish language and culture, Lego robotics, cartooning, photography, Shakespeare, and much, much more! Special Interest Camps require a minimum enrollment. Camps are cancelled two weeks before the start date if enrollment requirements are not met. find forms and instructions for new families. After School Lottery Registration for 2013-14 closed in April. The lottery spin is scheduled for May 4. Families may check their registra-tion status online via WebTrac. CYS will con-tact families by May 18 to confirm registra-tion status. If you missed lottery registration, open registration will begin May 13. New households will need to complete and return an After School 2013-14 registra-tion form for each child and health history forms in order to generate a household iden-tification number in our registration system. Forms should be returned to the Decatur Recreation Center, 231 Sycamore St., next to the public library. Please allow five business
days for processing new household paper-work. A household ID number is needed for use of the online registration system (WebT-rac), accessible via www.decaturga.com/cys.
Waiting ListsIn recent years, the elementary school sites (K-3 and 4-5) have filled up before the start of school. If space is available, K-3rd graders are eligible for their school-based Animal Crack-ers program as well as the Decatur Recre-ation Center Animal Crackers program at 231 Sycamore St. When programs are full, chil-dren will be placed on a waiting list for the desired program(s). Children may attend DRC Animal Crackers and also remain on the wait-list for the desired school-based program. As spaces open during the course of the year, CYS will contact families in the order in which they appear on the waitlist for the re-
spective program. Please make sure we have current contact information for your family. To be added to the waiting list you must: 1) Complete steps to generate a house-hold ID number in RecTrac through Decatur Recreation Center (original forms only, please; proof of residency required for resident fees); 2) Use WebTrac or contact CYS or Active Living staff to add your child to the desired waiting lists.
We have no way to anticipate chances of gaining entry to programs based on waiting lists. Enrollment patterns differ by school and shift substantially from year to year. Please be assured that CYS will contact you when space becomes available for your child/ren in an after-school program.

McKoy Park534 McKoy St.This nine-acre neighborhood recreational facility has a 330-foot baseball field that is fenced and lighted; a picnic pavilion with restrooms; a concession/scoring build-ing; and the newly renovated McKoy Pool, which has zero-depth entry and water fea-tures. The park also has a basketball court for recreational play; playground areas and a greenspace for games; a skate park; and picnic tables with grills and trash recep-tacles. The playground area includes an outdoor classroom with seat walls. McKoy is the home of Decatur High School’s varsity baseball team and Decatur Active Living adult softball programs. Two separate park-ing areas and concrete walkways connect the site features.

Ebster Park 404 W. Trinity Place(Under construction)A large multipurpose field is a key feature of this five-acre neighborhood recreational fa-cility. There is a swimming pool with a pool house, basketball courts and a playground area. Recent additions include a small pavil-ion with tables and grills. The Decatur Ac-tive Living youth sports and Decatur High School athletic programs use the field. The
park shares a parking lot with Ebster Center and Beacon Hill artists.

Mead Road Park 175 Mead Rd.Located on .75 acre of land adjacent to Oakhurst School, the park offers a large, open grassy area, play structure, basketball court and three shaded picnic tables. Park-ing is available during out-of-school hours in the Oakhurst School parking lot.
Scott Park 231 Sycamore St.Located directly behind Decatur Recreation Center and adjacent to the Decatur Library, Scott Park is the perfect place to stop by and let the kids play on the play structure, take a walk through the community garden or have a picnic under the huge shade tree in the middle of the park. The four acres of Scott Park are surrounded by gardens planted by residents and Master Gardener volunteers. Treat yourself to the serenity and beauty of the place. Two lighted ten-nis courts are available for rental. Parking is available in the library/recreation center parking deck.

Pavilions can be rented for picnics, weddings, birthday parties, class reunions, family reunions and graduations. The fees for Glenlake Pavilion are $100/$50 (Decatur resident) for the first two hours and $20/$12.50 (Decatur resident) for each additional hour. Oakhurst and McKoy pavilions are $80/$40 (Decatur resident) for the first two hours and $20/$10 (Decatur resident) each additional hour. Oakhurst and McKoy pavilions can be rented from March through No-vember; Glenlake Pavilion can be rented year round.
