We are pleased to announce the recipients of the 2016 EORA
Outdoor Opportunity Grant Program for the Southeast Region.
Mountain Alliance targets ’at risk’ high school students and
engages them in outdoor activities to boost self esteem and
confidence in overcoming obstacles through team-building on
both ‘low and high’ Ropes Courses.
www.mountainalliance.org
The Outside Foundation focuses on both
environmental education and conservation by
getting 7th graders in the Beaufort County
Public School system outside in Kayaks to
explore the low country backwaters with
trained interpretive naturalists.
www.outsidefoundation.org
The Outdoor Opportunity Grant Program was created to support not-for-
profits that expose youth to the outdoors. We’re always on the look out for
other groups so please let us know of any in your area. 2017 applications
will be available in July.

written by: Marty Cohen of CMC Retail
One of my personal mantras is this: if I am not ”re-inventing” something about what I
do in my personal and professional life, I will become stale and boring. It is absolutely critical that we constantly re-invent what we do in our retail stores. Re-invention often comes as New Year’s resolutions. A problem is that we often set our-selves up for failure by the sheer immensity of those resolutions. An example of the classic “sure-fire failure” is setting the bar too high on how often we are going to exercise; been there, done that. We have all been guilty of that one. It is the same thing in our retail businesses. There are so many areas that can use im-provements, and it is very easy to get overwhelmed by everything that we want to achieve.
Here is my solution: divide & segment, set realistic goals, and delegate; you will suc-
ceed.
There are three main components to your business: inventory, employees, and cus-
tomers. They all impact one another. Even if for starters you initiate the “change some-thing” process within those components, you will be moving forward. Any decision on inventory should be framed around the classification it represents. Look at each class in your stores and decide on one key improvement you want to make on the class level. It could be display, product lines, etc. What might make a big difference in your shoe business is not always the same thing that will improve your apparel. Think: “classification”.
Employees can be our biggest asset or liability. Institute solid metrics for their sales per-
formance. That could be rewarding improvements in items per ticket, monitor their per-
centage of multiple sales, or do more with PMs & spiffs. Just think what it could mean to your business if each salesperson sold 10% more merchandise! How often do you have regular team “sales meetings”?
Customers become “ours” as a result of good merchandise and good salespeople, but they must be constantly nurtured. Do you have a loyalty program? Does your POS system track customer purchases so that you can use that information in your targeted marketing?
Look around you. Set some realistic goals. Get it done.
A retailer who is not learning and gathering more sophisticated information
will stagnate and not grow beyond the same box he/she is in now.
As part of my relationship with EORA, I am available to speak with EORA retailers at no charge or obli-gation on any retail matter. If you would like to kick around some ideas on re-inventing YOUR business, discuss cash flow, seasonal ordering, or employees, please contact me:
