A fire that began about eight miles east of the community of Fort Belknap and fueled by gusts of over 40 miles per hour wound up being about a mile wide and nine miles long, consuming about a 5,000-acre swath. And if you were outside last night, you could smell it in the air. Kind of odd to for December, but goes to show that maybe we could use a little snow which is expected tonight into Friday evening, with most areas seeing 1-2 inches.

OBITUARYBen Unrau

Ben Unrau was born on January 17, 1915 in Bingham, Minnesota, the son of Peter H. and Eva (Becker) Unrau. In 1916, he moved to Lustre, Montana with his parents and seven brothers and sisters. His two younger sisters were born in Montana. Ben completed the 8th grade in 1929 and then worked on the family farm until 1934. For the next five years he worked on the Fort Peck Dam. In the fall of 1939 he moved to Los Angeles, looking for employment that didn’t require heavy physical work. Feeling the need to become educated, he enrolled in night high school classes and sheet metal training. In 1940 he went to work for Douglas Aircraft in Santa Monica, CA. Ben was drafted during World War II, and served in the Navy from 1944-1945. He returned to Los Angeles and continued aircraft machine work until he retired in 1980. Ben enjoyed retirement, spending time with friends and family. He moved to Glasgow in 2006 and made new friends at the Nemont Manor. At the age of 98 he moved to the Valley View Home. After retiring, Ben learned to square dance and enjoyed traveling to dances. One of his diary records said that he took dance lessons when he first moved to California. He enjoyed it when family would visit him in California and he remembered the names and other information about his many nieces and nephews. Ben was an avid reader was self-educated, had a great sense of humor and enjoyed visiting with friends and family. Ben married Beatrice Patton in 1943; she died in 1956. Ben is preceded in death by brothers and sisters; Anna Unger, Susan Toavs, Henry Unrau, Peter Unrau, Eva Stunkart, Toby Unrau, Agnes Baerg, and Nellie Baerg. He is also preceded by nieces and nephews. Survivors include his sister, Ruth Coulter in Maryland, his sister in law, Margaret Unrau and many nieces and nephews. Invertebrets Class, by Zora Holt, age 9We learned that not all insects fly. In one of our books we found two vertebrets (duck and frog) and one invertebret (dragonfly). We talked about earthworms and spiders. Linden and I have a big spider in our porch. None of our earthworms wanted to come out. We looked for bugs. Andi found a wasp. Linden found a fly. We wrote what was the same about our bugs, and what was different. Andi found the wasp in the garbage can, so apparently wasps like garbage. The fly tried to excape. I think vertabre are shaped like some kind of airplanes. We worked on a booklet called “Animals without Backbones (Invertebrates)”. The body parts on an ant are: the head, antennae, thorax, abdomen, eyes, and legs. Today’s Invertebats Class was the most interesting.

Linden Holt, Age 7 [teacher’s notes] We did ar priting [printing] expirment. We go don hwen it startid blizrding. The classroom sklotin Mister Boens likes to do akrobatics. Do not mess them up. [That is, it is important not to interfere with Mr. Bones’ acrobatics.] He is a plastik skelotin uv a huemon. I lrnd haw to print hwith tirpintien. [Our experiment for the day was using terpentine to dissolve newsprint and transfer it to a clean sheet of paper.]

Andi Burwick, Age 10 [teacher’s notes]During Play period we rehersed dressing. During reses we played super niga [ninja] warror. It was very fun! I lerned how fly. But i had to quit But it was fun while it lasted In Scince I lernd that the “on it’s side 8” means infinity you maek it like this [infinity symbol]. Becuse it Never ends. Then it was check perod.

Andi Burwick slips in one last practice of her Christmas Program piece (Good King Wenceslaus) after school is out. That’s Mr. Bones at right enjoying Andi tickling the ivories. Incidentally, the Tallow Creek Christmas program is set for 2:00 on Saturday, December 19th, with potluck treats to follow. Everyone is welcome!

George R. “Punk” Nicol born in Glasgow, MT and J. Maxine (Turner) Nicol born in Jordan, MT are blessed to announce their upcoming 70th wedding anniversary. George and Maxine were joined together on December 15, 1945 at the Methodist Church in Glasgow, MT. The couple made their home just south of Nashua where they raised their five children, Janice (Dennis) Shanks, Bill (Kareen) Nicol, Kathy Steele, Bonnie Nicol and Connie (Steve) Culliton. They have been blessed with six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Farming was George’s first love, and he was a professional welder, working for the Ft. Peck Corps of Engineers, as a civilian at the Glasgow Air Force Base teaching welding classes and for Montana Dakota Utilities. Maxine was a stay-at-home Mom during the time their children attended the Nashua Public School; she then worked for the school district for several years. Along with her big heart and love for family and friends, Maxine planted huge gardens (canning/freezing) and sharing her home-grown produce with anyone. She also raised chickens, and always had a milk cow. Many a day she could be seen driving grain trucks or tractor summer fallowing for her husband. Known for her excellent baking ability, her granddaughter complied all her favorite recipes into a cookbook “Treasures From Maxine’s Family and Friends”. Even with all her duties, she always had big meals ready for family (guests always welcome) whether sit down or hauled out to the field during harvest. Along with being well known for their dancing skills, the couple enjoyed spending four winters traveling in Arizona where Punk loved entertaining with his guitar after they retired in 1969. After a couple bad winters, it became evident that remaining at the farm was no longer an option. Although a very difficult decision, in October, 2014,

Nashua Couple celebrates 70 years of wedded bliss

George and Maxine agreed to leave the farm and move into Prairie Ridge assisted living complex in Glasgow. April, 2015, George agreed he needed more care so he moved to the Valley View Nursing Home. Although living separately, they are still connected at the heart, and Maxine spends most her afternoons visiting George, who still has his sense of humor and loves visitors. George celebrated his 91st birthday in October and Maxine turned 88 in August. George and Maxine’s children will help them celebrate their 70th Wedding Anniversary along with the staff and residents of Valley View Nursing Home in Glasgow on the 15th of December. Everyone is welcome to attend.
