Prayers for the Sick
From the Pastor | Fr. Michael Rudolph
Shaking Things Up… Jesus Christ came to shake things up. He shook up expectations about the Messiah. He shook up the Jewish religion. He shook up ideas about what it meant to be blessed. And He shook up people’s understandings about how God wants to be known and worshipped. Jesus did all this without totally changing anything. He transformed, He added to, He fulfilled, He reframed. But everything that He taught was in continuity with the religion God had given the Jews, with the words of Prophets, and with the deepest and best desires of people all over the world. But what Jesus taught was enough of a change to make many people fearful, anxious, and sometimes angry. I doubt if many people objected to Jesus healing the sick, giving sight to the blind, casting out demons or raising the dead. What many people did object to was His insistence that He was the manifestation of God on earth, and as such could forgive sins and reveal who God really is, and what He really wants. And what God wants isn’t always what people want. That’s true for those of us who are Christians as well as for others. We all have our weaknesses, our blind spots, our areas of rebellion against God. Advent is a time to prepare for the coming of Jesus. This means not only celebrating His birth, but also His coming in our midst every day, at the end of our lives, and at the end of life on this earth as we know it. Then, as God tells us in Sacred Scripture: “The day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and the works that are upon it will be burned up.” (2 Peter 3:10) How can we prepare for such dramatic events? Saint Peter gives us several ways. We are to look forward with hope to the coming new heavens and new earth. We are to conduct ourselves in holiness and devotion. And we are to be at peace. All of these come from embracing God and His will. The shaking things up that Jesus did—and continues to do—is meant to help us let go of everything that is not of God. Only when we are willing to let go of everything that is counter to God will we be ready to spend eternity with Him in heaven. To help us with this letting go, God, in His infinite love, sent us Jesus Christ. The words of Jesus Christ continue to shake things up for us, if we take them seriously. The saints are those people who took the words of Jesus to heart, above the distractions of fruitless chatter, deceitful passions and vain ambition. By taking seriously the words of Jesus, the saints lived lives differently than other people. Saint John the Baptist lived in the wilderness, wore clothing made of camel’s hair, ate grasshoppers, and told people to change how they were living. Saint Francis of Assisi refused to give into the violence, materialism and sensuality of many of his peers, and instead roamed the world barefoot, wed only to “Lady Poverty.” Saint Teresa of Calcutta left the comfort of teaching well-off Indian girls as a Sister of Loretto in response to a call to serve the poorest of the poor, and, as a Missionary Sister of Charity, to live like them. These three, like all the saints, allowed Jesus Christ to shake them up, and so change them radically. By doing so, they all prepared the way of the Lord, for themselves, and for everyone who knew them. By God’s grace, and with the help of the prayers of the Blessed Virgin Mary, may we follow their example. Happy Advent! Father Rudolph
Saint of the Day – Saint Gregory III Gregory was originally from Syria. At some point, he was ordained a priest and moved to Rome. There he became so well known for his holiness, learning and ability that when the Pope died in the year 731, the people spontaneously carried Gregory away from the funeral procession and chose him to be the new Vicar of Christ. This choice was ratified by a representative of the Byzantine Emperor, who had a say at the time in who became the Bishop of Rome. In spite of this ratification, conflict soon arose between the Emperor and Gregory. The Emperor was Leo the Isaurian, an army commander who had seized power in Constantinople after defending that city against an Arab attack. Leo, along with some other Christians, thought that the use of icons, statues and other artistic representations of Christ and the saints for prayer amounted to idolatry. In 730, Leo forbade the veneration of all images. Many images were destroyed in Constantinople and other areas firmly under the control of Leo. There were riots there by people who supported the tradition of praying with images. Gregory vigorously protested Leo’s actions, and defended the use of images. He then summoned a synod in Rome, at which bishops, clergy and members of the nobility approved the excommunication of anyone who condemned the veneration of images or who destroyed them. The Emperor, in response, sent a fleet of ships to capture the Pope. The ships were lost in a storm, but Leo went on to seize lands owned by the Papacy in Sicily and the Italian region of Calabria. In addition to his defense of sacred art, Gregory was also known for his support of missionary activity. He appointed Saint Boniface as Archbishop in Germany and gave full backing to his work of evangelization in that region, sending the English monk Saint Willibald to help him. Pope Gregory III died in the year 741, as the armies of the Lombard tribe were threatening to attack Rome. He was known as a man of deep humility and true wisdom, had a good knowledge of Sacred Scripture—knowing the Psalms by heart—and he preached well in both Latin and Greek. He was firm in upholding the true Faith, protected the poor, and was a special friend to monks and nuns. Saint Gregory III, pray for us!

Draw near to God and he will draw near to you. [James 4:8] If you feel called to make a commitment to a weekly hour or to sign up on the substitute list for the Christmas season or in the new year, please contact Betty or Therese at the numbers above. They are also able to answer any questions about Adoration. (If signing up for the Christmas Holy Days only, you need not call them, just sign up on the sheet on the sign-in counter.) Please, feel free to come and visit whenever you are able 24/7. The Sunday hour from 4:00-5:00 a.m. still urgently needs to be filled by one or two adorers. The Wednesday hour from 4:00-5:00 a.m. needs a prayer partner. There are many hours that need prayer partners or long term subs over the winter months, for those who are traveling or unable to get around as well in the winter weather. Some of these hours are Mondays noon to 1:00 p.m. and 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., Fridays from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., and Sundays from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. The parish has a very good substitute system. Betty and Therese help to find a sub for you, so please do not let that concern you in making a commitment.

Imagine waking up Christmas morning with no presents under the tree….or the smell of a special meal in the oven. Imagine watching all the other children enjoying their new clothes and toys while you have
nothing….not even the bare necessities like a new pair of mittens, a hat, or boots to help keep you warm and dry.
Every time a hand reaches out to help another...it’s Christmas. Would you please help me get a head start on the Adopt-A-Family Christmas list?
Adopt-A-Family is a program that helps families who face temporary financial set backs due to medical bills, job loss (down sizing), the economy, repairs to their car, etc. and have the impossible task in trying to provide a Christmas with all the trimmings for their children. Helping such families would include gifts or help in providing a Christmas dinner through donations or gift cards. If you would like to adopt a family or know of anyone in need, please contact Bunny at 763-537-8401 x214. I will be glad to offer a further explanation of our program. ~ Bunny Arseneau

How one photo of a preborn baby helped to make future generations pro-life Adapted from an article in Lifesite News, www.lifesitenews.com. Used with permission.
By Carole Novielli | October 7, 2017
Many of us have worn it, and others have surely seen it — the iconic pro-life “Precious Feet” pin. But what’s the story behind this symbol?
In the early 1970’s, Dr. Russell Sacco, a urologist from Oregon at the time, was aware of abortion prior to Roe v. Wade because of those who were speaking out on the topic. “I knew as a doctor that abortion kills children; they kill human beings,” he stated in an interview published on Vimeo. Dr. Sacco said he began reading “anatomical books,” and when the Supreme Court ruled that murdering the preborn was “legal,” the doctor became, in his words, “furious.” It was shortly after this that Sacco met a pathologist who was also anti-abortion. This pathologist “… was supposed to take the children that had been killed and destroy the bodies. But he told me that he didn’t do that; he just didn’t like to do that.”
Dr. Sacco said that this pathologist had preserved the babies’ bodies in a bucket of formaldehyde, which he showed Sacco. “… [I]n the bucket were about seven or eight infant bodies. It was a little bit shocking for me to see that but, there they were.” Dr. Sacco asked the pathologist if he could photograph the babies “so that I could put it on slides and I could go around and give talks on how we should save and protect the prenatal children.” Dr. Sacco said he took out “one body at a time” to photograph them. Then, he catalogued each child and their estimated ages. “Then, one of the ones I decided to take was one that I would hold just the child’s feet between my fingers,” which Sacco says he did for scale. “So, I put my fingers on that so that you could identify the size of my hand – then you could identify the feet of the children.”
The image, which Dr. Sacco refused to copyright so it could be used worldwide, has been referred to as “Tiny Feet,” “Little Feet,” and “Precious Feet.”
But it was in Dr. Sacco’s meeting with Dr. John Willke that this photograph became famous. Dr. Willke used that image in his book Handbook on Abortion. Following that, the picture was printed in early pro-life brochures such as “Life and Death” and “Did you Know?” The photo soon “went viral,” as they say, and was published in countless flyers, books and pamphlets. That photo then inspired an Arizona couple, Ellis and Virginia Evers, the founders of Heritage House, which now offers the pins for purchase. And so the “Precious Feet” impacted future generations, bringing to light the truth: that abortion kills very real human beings.
