The best “Christmas story” I have read this year was written by John Lehrer . . .

Holiday Happiness? Not Under The Tree We live in an age that is obsessed with things. We fill

our homes with the latest gadgets and fashions and then, when we run out of space, rent a storage unit.

This obsession is most vividly on display during the holidays, especially now that the weeks af-ter Thanksgiving have become a frenzy of mad sales, long lines and end-less emails promoting free

shipping. Christmas has become a collective excuse for consumption, as if the best way to celebrate the spirit of the season is to rack up credit-card debt buying stuff for others. The implicit assumption is that happiness can be gift-wrapped.

Here’s the problem: Material things can give us jolts of pleasure, but that pleasure isn’t rooted in the thing itself. As a result, we end up squandering Christmas looking for joy in all the wrong places.

Consider a new experiment led by the Oxford Uni-versity researchers Mengfei Huang and Andrew Parker. They were interested in the different neurological reactions triggered by a genuine Rembrandt portrait and a fake one, painted by one of his pupils. Though the canvases might look similar, real Rembrandts are worth about 100 times more.

We pay such different prices for these paintings be-cause we assume that there is something special about an authentic Rembrandt, that the Old Master filled his art with discernible flourishes. Though we might not be able to identify these minor differences, we think we can still appreciate them, which is why we hang Rembrandts in the finest museums and consign his imitators to the basement. We sense great art!

But that’s not what the researchers found. When their subjects were shown real and fake paintings while being monitored in a brain scanner, there was no detectable difference in their sensory reaction. The masterpiece didn’t excite the visual cortex any more than the knock-off did.

The scientists did locate a pattern of brain activity, however, that appeared whenever subjects thought a painting was authentic. There was a spike in activity in the orbitofrontal cortex, a chunk of brain just be-hind the eyes that’s often associated with perceptions of reward and pleasure. What’s interesting is that this area responded just as robustly when the stamp of au-thenticity was applied to a fake.

This principle doesn’t just apply to art. In a 2009 experiment, Caltech scientists gave people in brain scanners a range of California Cabernets, priced from $5 to $90. Not surprisingly, the subjects consistently reported that the more expensive wines tasted better. Here’s the catch: the scientists had reshuffled the labels, so that subjects were sometimes given a $90 bottle filled with cheap jug wine. But the pleasure areas of the brain responded solely to the perceived price. A fancy label can make even the cheapest plonk taste great.

Similar results have been achieved with shoes, tequila and jewelry. In study after study, the actual products seem to matter less than our superficial beliefs about them.

Does this mean that the only gifts worth giving are those plastered with prestigious logos?

Quite the opposite. The real moral of this research is that even the most wonderful things in the world—and what’s more wonderful than Rembrandt and fine wine?—aren’t wonderful for purely material reasons. Instead, the joy and beauty we find in these objects

depend on all those feelings and beliefs we bring to them, infusing the lifeless possessions with the life of mind. It really is the thought that counts.

Given this psychological reality, we should reassess our holiday priorities, spending less time shopping and more time with the people we’re shopping for. As the Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman observes, “It is only a slight exaggeration to say that happiness is the experience of spending time with people you love and who love you.”

So put down those presents—you’re missing the best part.

—CC— The best part of our Christmases has been getting

together with all the family. There was never a time, up until their deaths, that I didn’t spend Christmas with my parents.

Many times the gifts were scarce but the joy was abundant.

As the kids grow older some are unable to come home for Christmas and others just have things they would rather do. However when there is a vacant chair at the table there is sadness in the hearts of Mom and Dad.

Edgar Guest talked about that sadness in the fol-lowing poem . . .

Going Home For Christmas He little knew the sorrow that was in his vacant chair;

He never guessed they’d miss him,

or he’d surely have been there;

He couldn’t see his mother or the lump that filled her throat,

Or the tears that started falling as she read his hasty note;

And he couldn’t see his father, sitting sorrowful and dumb,

Or he never would have written that

he thought he couldn’t come.

He little knew the gladness that his

presence would have made,

And the joy it would have given,

or he never would have stayed.

He didn’t know how hungry had the little mother grown

Once again to see her baby and to claim him for her own.

He didn’t guess the meaning of his visit Christmas Day

Or he never would have written that he couldn’t get away.

He couldn’t see the fading of the cheeks that once were pink,

And the silver in the tresses; and he didn’t stop to think

How the years are passing swiftly,

and next Christmas it might be

There would be no home to visit and no mother dear to see.

He didn’t think about it -- I’ll not say he didn’t care.

He was heedless and forgetful or he’d surely have been there.

Are you going home for Christmas?

Have you written you’ll be there?

Going home to kiss the mother and to show her that you care?

Going home to greet the father in a way to make him glad?

If you’re not I hope there’ll never come a

time you’ll wish you had.

Just sit down and write a letter --

it will make their heart strings hum

With a tune of perfect gladness --

if you’ll tell them that you’ll come.

If you were in any doubt that Christmas has not come to Healdton, you had only to be in attendance at any church in the area this past Sunday and you would be convinced.

I attend the First Chris-tian Church. The church has been transformed. Holiday wreaths, candles in the windows, a bank of Poinsettias near the left pulpit, the Chrismon tree on the right side of the pul-pit, candles and greenery

in each window, wreaths each side of the baptistry, wreaths in the foyer and on the front doors of the church and the Children’s Santa Tree in the Fellow-ship Hall were all in evi-dence.

For many years the members of the church have purchased Poinset-tias in memory of loved ones and the pots of flow-ers are banked across the aisle from the Chrismon Tree. Each of the seven-

teen ornaments on the Chrismon Tree were made many years ago by the church members and each one has a meaning which is voiced as the chrismons are placed on the tree. The chrismon symbols placed on the tree are monograms of Christ. The white stands for our Lord’s purity and perfection; the gold for His majesty and glory,

etc. Every church in the

community will have spe-cial services during the holiday season. A special one is the Christmas Eve Candlelight service at the First Christian Church in Healdton. As each person comes forward they are given a small candle. The service concludes with the candle of the last per-

son being served is being lighted from the commu-nion table and then others are individually lighted around the room as the song Silent Night is being sung. After all the candles have been lighted and the song ends, those who at-tend pass quietly out of the church.

The Candle Light Com-munion Service begins at 7 pm on Christmas Eve. The public is invited.

for a care-free winter

It is said that we are all a product of our upbring-ing and that seems to be holding steady and true regarding our president. Barak Obama is said to have been born in Ha-waii. His father was a Kenyan and his mother an American. Some of his school years were spent going to a Muslim school in Indonesia. Crit-ics say this “school” was more of a radical indoc-trination event. Later, young Obama attended a Catholic school. Just how much this all affected his outlook and likes and dislikes is unknowable but is worth remember-ing. For sure, he is more sympathetic to Muslims as a result of his growing up experience than say an Oklahoma farmer would be during these hectic

times. Americans have a lot on

their plate this Christmas season. An election is coming up with all sorts of candidates appear-ing daily on their TV screens and newspapers. What are they looking for? Last week’s events in San Bernardino were a rude awakening for many Americans. Now (finally) tagged as an act of “ter-ror” by the FBI and the President, the shootings led by Tashfeen Malik and her husband Syed Fa-rook shocked the world. And why not? Farook is an American citizen (from Pakistan originally) with a college degree, a good paying government job who was living the

“American Dream” in the Redlands. Despite sev-eral trips to Saudi Arabia and Pakistan and mar-rying an Arab woman over there he never made “any” watch lists.

His wife attended a Mosque under Pakistan’s most notorious radical cleric (Maulana Aziz) in Islamabad. She had a Doctor’s of Pharmacy degree plus a Master’s in Pharmacy. Aziz had led the famous Pakistani uprising a few years back in which several hundred died and continues to preach his hate on the ra-dio and TV in Islamabad. Tashfeen even used a fake address for her entree visa to the USA. You just wonder how much it takes to ring a bell at Homeland Security or at the FBI. Our president wants to bring in a few hundred thousand more of these immigrants saying they will be “vetted” and the terrorist screened out. Just like they screened out this Tashfeen person.

We are warned to keep love and peace in our hearts toward these ter-rorist and the President’s Attorney General, Loretta Lynch, in a recent speech said she would not toler-ate “Anti-Muslim rheto-ric” prosecuting anyone who spoke such. So much for the 1st Amendment. Americans will obviously be seeking a new presi-dent next year, or will they? The most likely winner is Hillary Clin-ton. To elect Hillary will be a vote of no change. The president who has so many American’s upset because of the lack of any apparent leadership or even pro-American ide-als was reelected and will have served eight years. There are real indications

that if he could legally run again, he would be reelected. Ouch.

This may explain the administration’s noncha-lant attitude to the elec-tion. Perhaps they figure that with 90% certainty of block voting by gov-ernment workers, union members, blacks and im-migrants, they will get reelected anyway. Thus

Hillary’s blasé attitude in her failure to address present National Secu-rity concerns regarding Islamic terrorism. Heck. She can’t even say the word.

Be sure and go to church Sunday and don’t forget to pray for our country.

Have You Earned Your Place In Heaven? After donating a whopping $50 million to a gun control effort and because of his work against obesity and smoking, former New York City Mayor, Michael Bloomberg was quoted as saying: “I am telling you, if there is a God, when I get to heaven I’m not stop-ping to be interviewed. I am heading straight in...I have earned my place in heaven. It’s not even close.”

How does that sound to you? Presumptuous? Arrogant? The very idea that Mr. Bloomberg could think he could “buy” his way into heaven must be offensive to God. Howev-er, is it less offensive when we believe and act like we can earn our way into heaven by going to church each Sunday? Or, by reading our Bibles daily? Or, giving generously to the church? Or, helping the poor? Or, being a good father, mother, husband, wife, son, or daughter. The list could go on and on.

Do we, along with Mr. Bloomberg need to be reminded that after doing all we could possibly do, we are still unprofitable servants (Luke 17:10)?

Do we also need to be reminded that our righ-teousness – the best we can offer – is as filthy rags to God (Isaiah 64:6)?

You see, Heaven isn’t a matter of our attain-ment, it’s a matter of Christ’s atonement for us. If we’re allowed into Heaven, it definitely will not be because we earned it. It won’t be because we wowed God with our morality, righteousness or good works. And, it won’t be because God is indebted to us and owes it to us. On the contrary, if we reach heaven it will be because of what He has done for us, leaving us indebted to him! “…not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us…” (Titus 3:5)

With the support of the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy (FORHP), Rural Health Innovations (RHI), a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Rural Health Resource Center, is excited to an-nounce that Holdenville General Hospital of Hold-enville, Oklahoma has been chosen to be sup-ported through the Small Rural Hospital Transi-

Holdenville General Hospital has been chosen by SRHT to assist in Value Based Health Care

tion (SRHT) Project. The SRHT Project is funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration’s (HRSA) FORHP through a contract to RHI.

The purpose of the SRHT Project is to provide on-site technical assistance (TA) to support small rural hospitals in bridging the gaps between the current volume-based health care system and the newly

emerging value-based sys-tem of health care delivery and payment. Participat-ing hospitals must reside in persistent poverty areas of the U.S.

The top eight ranked hospitals were selected based on program eligibil-ity requirements, organi-zational readiness, lead-ership and commitment to implementing consul-tant best practice recom-mendations that improve performance, as well as strategies that assist pro-viders in transitioning to a value-based system. RHI received 27 applications from 15 states. The scor-ing and ranking process revealed a competitive pool of candidates.

Congratulations to Hold-enville General Hospital for this accomplishment! For more information on the SRHT Project, visit the website at https://www.ruralcenter.org/rhi/srht.

Holdenville General Hospital has been

chosen by SRHT to assist in Value Based

Health Care

With the support of the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy (FORHP), Rural Health Innovations (RHI), a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Rural Health Resource Center, is excited to an-nounce that Holdenville General Hospital of Hold-enville, Oklahoma has been chosen to be sup-ported through the Small Rural Hospital Transi-tion (SRHT) Project. The SRHT Project is funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration’s (HRSA) FORHP through a contract to RHI.

The purpose of the SRHT Project is to provide on-site technical assistance (TA) to support small rural hospitals in bridging the gaps between the current volume-based health care system and the newly emerging value-based sys-tem of health care delivery and payment.

Sunday we had out the poinsettias and the Christ-mas tree. We are anx-iously looking forward to Christmas. We will be having our Christmas program Sunday night at 6:00 on December 20th. We will be serving cook-ies and punch following the program. We invite all the parents and friends

to attend. This Sunday our group

sang “There’s Still Pow-er in the Old Rugged Cross.” Bro. Larry’s message was taken from Jeremiah 33:1-9 and en-titled “ Christmas-Time to Turn to Christ.” Jer-emiah’s prophecy came during desperate times. Rebellion, disobedience

and neglect had led to the downfall of the nation. They had simply forgotten who they were and what they were to be. Most had been taken captive, their cities and lands plundered and lost.

Jeremiah pleads with God’s people to call upon him. In the middle of all this desperation and loss optimism would be dif-ficult. Yet, in the middle of all this comes the Word of God to His people: “Call to me and I will an-swer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” Could it be that God is waiting today to hear once again from His people. How in tune with God would you say America is today? What could happen if we once again turned to Him with all our hearts?

Jeremiah delivers God’s promise for a better fu-ture. God promises to release His people from captivity. We can be held

captive by our greed, lust, selfishness, indifference, and lack of godliness. They had forgotten God and were suffering the consequences. They had brought the judgment of God upon themselves.

Jeremiah points God’s people to Christ. Even in those days the light of

Grace was beginning to dawn. He proclaimed it to the people. Christmas is a time to remember the great gift that God gave for our salvation: Jesus. By Him we are saved, sanctified, healed and restored. Let us call upon Him as never before. May this season be our reminder!

Telephone-based mass notifications systems are used by thousands of public safety agencies across America to warn citizens about local emergencies, hazards and other threats.

Residents of Pontotoc County can now rely on Hyper-Reach to provide the potentially life-saving capability. Service in Pontotoc County is fully operational now, according to Chad Letellier, director of Emergency Management for Pontotoc County.

The new emergency alert system will provide rapid notification of hazardous and urgent situations using a mix of telephone calls, text and email messages, said Letellier. The service is also available for the hearing impaired.

In addition, Hyper-Reach provides Pontotoc County residents access to the Wireless Emergency Alert sys-tem developed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

A free smartphone app for iPhones and Android de-vices allows users to display and organize messages for specific addresses that are important to them, Letellier announced.

“Our job is to protect the citizens of Pontotoc County as effectively and cost-effectively as possible,” said Letellier. “We reviewed many of the major vendors for emergency notification service, and Hyper-Reach gave us everything we needed for what we believe will be the best price. We’re really excited about this new capability.”

Hyper-Reach is a state-of-the-art mass emergency notification system designed specifically for public safety. The system sends thousands of telephone calls, text messages and emails to geographically targeted households in seconds. A new feature sends broadcast messages to most current mobile telephones in an af-fected area.

Additionally, Hyper-Reach Anywhere is a smart-phone app allowing people monitor their home, office and other addresses they care about.

Pontotoc County plans to use the service primarily for alerts about weather and environmental hazards, criminal activity and missing persons. Landline phones are automatically enrolled, but mobile phones are only included when citizens enroll. Pontotoc County resi-dents are encouraged to enroll by going to the county-specific enrollment page at the following link: http://www.hyper-reach.com/okpontotocsignup.html

“We’re honored to have been selected by Pontotoc County to provide its emergency alerts,” said Sam Asher, president of Hyper-Reach. “It’s gratifying to be part of an effort to save lives and protect property and we take that responsibility very seriously.”

About Pontotoc County Office of Emergency Management

The Pontotoc County Office of Emergency Manage-ment was established a decade ago with a mission to protect the citizens of Pontotoc County. Under the direction of Letellier, the office operates the county emergency operations center, provides coordination and support to all emergency agencies of the county, provides communications support, logistical support, emergency planning for the county, and other coordina-tion and support functions.

About Hyper-ReachHyper-Reach (www.hyper-reach.com) is a mass noti-
