A unique Christmas

Dear Julie,

This evening I have cause to thank a total

stranger for potentially saving my little boy‟s life.

Two ladies in a white Renault stopped outside

my driveway and honked their car horn to catch

my attention as my little boy had escaped

through the gates and was stood on the curb of

the A18 in Hatfield, right in the middle of peak

hour. Whilst I was only feet away in the garden,

he had slipped away, potentially forever, and I

have these two unknown ladies to thank for

stopping just at the right moment.

I have no other way of finding out who they are

other than to hope they are local residents and

read the Hatfield Arrow. I owe them everything.

Please publish this little note so that they might

know how one distraught mother is eternally grateful for their attention and immediate

action.

Kind regards,

Kate Groves, mum to Darcy, 15 months

Stuart Wade has

recently returned from

Alicante where he took

part in the ISKA World

won a silver medal in

the Men's Korean

disappointed to come in

second place, although

he says with hindsight,

his category was one of

the largest and pretty much everyone in it was

world class Therefore, coming second was

quite an achievement. He worked hard in the

competition but the judges awarded the victory

to a competitor from Germany by a slim margin

on the scorecards. Stuart would like to thank

his sponsors „For Goodness Shakes‟ for making

it possible for him to enter the competitions.

Tender¸ loving care at Travis. During the week of October 18th, the children of Hatfield Travis School were learning about their

environment and how they share their world with

different creatures. The children investigated their

area, looking for signs of animals such as birds,

minibeasts etc. They also met a wide variety of

creatures when Sam‟s Safari visited and learnt about

the animals‟ habitats and behaviour. On the final day,

they worked with their parents to create gardens to

attract these animals, making wormeries, butterfly

feeders and bug hotels as well as planting lavender and

sensory plants. Here are some of the reporters‟ views

on the week and its activities.

At school we had Sam’s Safari and Get Your Grown Up

Gardening. At Sam’s Safari there was a Coral Snake and a

giant snail. At Get Your Grown Up Gardening I did the wormery and a paper flower.- Sam.

I saw a chinchilla and a millipede and a king snake and a snail and a gecko- Amber.

I saw a chinchilla, it was grey and cute and a snake. I touched it- Emily.

When I was gardening I did some seeds for the borders. I built a house for the birds. –Jade.

I planted a bulb and it might grow big. I made a bug hotel with my Grandad.- Leo

The activities continued throughout the half term holidays where the children and parents created

imaginative and colourful gardens in a shoe. The shoes are on display both in and out of school and

are frequently commented on (even by a representative from the RHS!). Well done to all involved!

NORTH EAST DONCASTER CITIZENS

ADVICE BUREAU

Since moving house recently I have been getting letters and phone calls

almost daily from debt collection firms chasing money apparently owed

by the previous occupier. I‟ve tried explaining they‟ve got the wrong

person but they don‟t take any notice. What can I do to stop this?

The first thing to remember is that if it's not your debt, you aren't liable for it. You can't be sued or

made to pay, and debt collectors have no power to come into your home.

What you can do:

Ignore them, they can't do anything.

Contact the company pursuing the debts in writing and explain that the person they are chasing

for payment no longer lives at this address and has no connection with you.

Point out in the letter that harassment is a criminal offence and that you will take further

action if it does not stop.

If the debt is in the previous occupant's name and they have left a forwarding address you could

pass this information on, (it's their debt not yours!) but you're not under any duty to do so.

Use a call-barring service or change your phone number and go ex-directory.

Keep a record of any harassment, including dates, times and content of any telephone calls, and

keep copies of all correspondence. Report the matter to the police if debt collectors threaten or

intimidate you

Write a formal letter of complaint to the debt collector and original creditor, if you know who

it is.

If this still doesn‟t work, take your complaint further to the trade body they belong to (the

Finance and Leasing Association; Credit Services Association or the Consumer Credit Trade

Association all have Codes of Practice for their members).

Speak to trading standards - they may have other complaints about same company - and inform the

Office of Fair Trading, which regulates debt collection

If you require any advice/assistance from our Thorne or Stainforth offices, concerning the above or

any other issue, please contact our Assessment Team at North East Doncaster Citizens Advice

Bureau on 0844 499 4137 Mon-Thurs between 10:00 & 2:00, Fri 10:00-12:00. Or email:

If you have a Welfare Benefits enquiry/

problem, we now also operate an

We currently have a new self-help

The Trolleybus Museum at Sandtoft has been

officially „Accredited‟ by the Museums, Libraries

and Archives Council (MLA).

The Trolleybus Museum at Sandtoft is home to

the world‟s largest collection of preserved

trolleybuses, opening selected weekends

throughout the year. Visitors on open days can

take a journey back in time on one of many

finely preserved working trolleybuses in the

collection. Visitors can also wallow in the

nostalgia of our 1950‟s/60‟s pre-fab bungalow

and shop window displays and discover the

various exhibits which extend well beyond the

transport theme.

The MLA‟s Museum Accreditation Scheme sets

nationally agreed standards for all museums in

the UK. The Trolleybus Museum‟s award proves

it measures up, meeting the guidelines on how it is run; how it looks after its collection and

services it provides its visitors.

Graham Bilbé, Museum Chairman, said, “I was

delighted to hear the news that we have been

awarded Accreditation. It is a significant advance

in the continued development of our museum

and a hearty thank you to all those dedicated

volunteers involved.”

Andrew Motion, Chair of MLA, said, “Being

awarded Accreditation is an impressive

achievement. It recognises the high standard and

service that The Trolleybus Museum at Sandtoft

provides and acknowledges the hard work of its

volunteers.”

The Trolleybus Museum is next open

on Sunday 14th November from

11am to 6pm for „Twilight‟ trolleybus

services. Admission prices are £5.00

Adults, £4.00 Seniors and £3.00

Children.

Watts Associates have launched their

Business Navigator service which they

have used successfully with a broad range

of businesses. We asked George Watts

of Watts Associates what the service

entails... “What we deliver is tailored to each business. We use the analogy of the business owner being the

Captain of their ship which is on a journey, and we work alongside the captain as their Business Navigator. We help businesses to see where they

are, plan for where they want to go, provide them with navigational aids so they can track their journey and correct course when things don‟t go

to plan, make the business work efficiently, identify and avoid the icebergs and arrive at their destination safely before setting off on the next

journey. The emphasis is on knowing where you are and looking forward to the future” Q “So what exactly does that entail?”

A “Everything is tailored to your business and what you will require will depend upon where you are on the journey. Being Chartered Management Accountants with over 25 years of broad

management experience we bring that experience to your business and have both a management and financial approach. We produce the accounts and

tax returns and provide appropriate advice as you would expect, but we also work closely alongside business owners and managers to plan and take

their business forward, with a clear emphasis on navigation and looking forward. In many ways it‟s a service that is similar to the role of a Finance

Director in a large plc, but it‟s tailored to all types of businesses, from start up through to medium and large companies”

Q “What results do you achieve?” A “The results directly depend on what we do. We‟ve helped businesses clarify their direction, simplified systems to make things easier, improved

management information and given owners a clearer view of where they are, produced accounts quicker (including earlier production of annual

accounts), helped businesses raise finance, increased their profits and reduced their tax. In addition, by working closely alongside people

we‟ve learnt about their business and then helped them develop their own business skills, so they are more in control of both their business and their

life”

For more information on the Business Navigator service please contact George Watts on 01302 842831 or visit the Watts Associates website

You had to see it to believe it….

Working in Human Resources in the current economic climate has made me about as popular as

Nick Clegg at a Student Union discothèque. As an example, I stopped someone in the corridor the

other day and they had fainted before I‟d time to ask them the way to the post room. Even though I

am an HR champion, there are times I shake my head and wonder where these so-called modern

day fads and terminologies come from. „Down-sizing‟ basically means redundancies. „Wiggle Room‟

means flexibility and a „Pre-think‟ basically means having a chat before making a decision. I often find

myself wondering what would have happened if the pit manager at Hatfield Colliery had taken a call

from a miner complaining of Seasonal Affective Disorder and requesting a „duvet‟ day. I imagine the

reply would have contained a selection of the following words “arse, bed, now, get, here, you‟re,

sacked!”

Another wonder of the modern-day working world - namely dress down day - resulted in one of

the strangest sights I have ever witnessed in a working environment.

Back in 2000 I began my HR career at a large call centre north of Doncaster. It was a big old place

with lots of shop floor personnel dealing with enquiries on an endless cycle. The management were

always keen to introduce the latest business initiatives designed to narrow the gap between

themselves and their workforce, to promote a sense of unity and hopefully reduce the „them and us‟

perception that ruled. The staff were encouraged to use these days to don fancy dress costumes and

raise money for charity, a worthwhile cause everyone would agree.

However, there were a number of issues, one being that the costumes often cost employees money to hire and, secondly, the management never seemed comfortable with joining in! After some

cajoling from yours truly, management were persuaded to get into the spirit of things in the hope

their sacrifice would bring them closer to their charges. Luckily, I was excused as I would routinely

have to visit job centres on these days and needed to look more business chic than Fred Flintstone.

One day I received a call from an irate senior manager who was ranting that one of his “problem

employees” had sent out an abusive e-mail and the matter needed to be addressed immediately.

I escalated this to the Head of HR who explained that I should advise them, along with another

member of HR and another senior employee, to meet with the problem body to investigate the

matter and then take disciplinary action if required. Now, this would not normally pose a problem

but today was fancy dress day and so when I explained to the manager what was required I was met

with a long, uncomfortable silence - followed by a sigh and an desperate plea for assistance!

However, I was needed at the job centre in half an hour and the matter couldn‟t wait if the

employee was to be suspended. They were on their own. I eventually gathered up my job packs and

set off on my way to the car park, passing the interview rooms

on the way. I had to do a double take. What I witnessed that

day scarred me for life and made me realise that breaking down

barriers is not as straight forward as it sounds. The accused sat

there on a chair dressed as Marilyn Monroe, and was being

quizzed Gestapo style by a pirate, Little Bo Peep and Fuzzy Bear

from the Muppets. To make matters worse, Marilyn sat there

legs akimbo, leaving nothing to the imagination, while Captain

Hook undertook the interview complete with eye patch and

metal hand. I watched on astonished as the pirate struggled to

write with his bad hand while steadying the notepaper with his

hook. Alas, much as in real life, there was no happy ending to

this tale as it was Goodbye Norma Jean and Marilyn faded like a

candle in the Yorkshire wind. Hook got rid of his problem

employee, Bo Peep took time out from her sheep to type up

the disciplinary letter and Fuzzy Bear lived happily ever after in

Wath upon Dearne where he married one of the office Spice Girls and had two little cubs.

I eventually left the company but often chuckle to myself as to what I saw that fateful day and at

Page 29: December 10, Issue 60, The Hatfield Arrow

how some of these modern business initiatives don‟t quite cut the mustard. I have now decided to

seek a wife, not because I want companionship, love, affection and a long-lasting friendship, but

purely and simply so I can have kids, apply for flexible working, family tax credits, work-life balance

time and time off for dependents. Call me fickle if you wish. It is always strange doing this in mid

November but I sincerely wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a fantastic New Year. I doubt it

will be long before Christmas is sponsored by ASDA or Marks & Spencer and kids grow up thinking

that Father Christmas lives in Sainsbury‟s from just after Bonfire Night and camps out at the

Frenchgate Centre for kicks at weekends. Please remember to think about those less fortunate than

yourselves, our servicemen and women abroad, those who care for others and people who have to

work over the festive period. Finally, why not put on your glad rags and have a good old fashioned

night out over Crimbo, please support your village

pubs as they need it over Xmas as much as ever.

A final season‟s greetings to everyone who reads

my articles and especially those who stop me and

pass on their thoughts – whether good or bad!

I write about genuine experiences so I‟m happy to

answer questions about my purple Y-fronts and

the like. Although it is hard enough for me to chat

up the ladies anyway without someone also asking

if I am wearing the offending underpants at the time. All the best to you and yours and watch out

for the 2010 Difference Top 10 awards in January.

The school‟s autumn term has been another busy one. Each class has continued to work hard, both

in the classroom and on extra activities.

Everybody Writes Day- FROG

INFESTATION!!!

Breaking news! Frogs infest the whole of

HWPS. When children arrived at school

one day in late October, water covered a

majority of the playground. Grass was

strewn everywhere. The younger

children were astounded at the sight of

this mess! Mr Pettigrew our site manager

told us in assembly that he had heard a

strange sound coming from the hall when

he arrived to open up that morning. He

even had the noise recorded. This gave

the children their inspiration for the Big

Write.

P.C. Plumridge arrived to investigate the

matter for us. As part of a day to

highlight the importance of writing skills, PC Plumridge talked to us about how

writing influences his job as a policeman.

If the frog infestation did happen, he

would have to take notes about the scene, times and places.

Two frog enthusiasts came in to show us 2 different species of frogs, which

year 5 used to create some factual writing about frog life cycles.

Mrs. Acton and our teachers say they are thrilled with the quality of the

writing produced by the whole school as a result of this special day.

Tag Rugby Tournament

Two teams from year 3 and 4 at HWPS competed in the Hatfield pyramid tag rugby tournament. All

of the players received praise for their win. What we are most pleased with is the amount of

brilliant sportsmanship from both teams. Our first team won the pyramid competition and our

second team came fourth. We would like to congratulate the other teams for being excellent rivals.

We would also like to thank Manor Junior School for hosting the tournament. Many thanks to

Doncaster RLFC for organising and running the tournament.

Remembrance Day

KS2 all assembled in the school hall to show their respect for the countless soldiers that risked their

lives in wars over the years. We all stood for the minutes silence on the 11th hour, of the 11th day of

the 11th month. KS1 and Foundation Stage carried out a minute silence on the front playground. As

well as the minute silence, children bought their own poppies and the money will go towards the

Poppy Appeal.

At the cenotaph at Hatfield Woodhouse one of our pupils, Kyle Evans was privileged to lay a wreath

on behalf the family of Corporal J. Harper V.C – a past pupil of our school.

Merksplas

Continuing with our link to Merksplas, Belgium, Mr and Mrs Roulen visited Hatfield Woodhouse in

November to find out more about our school and some of the other schools in Hatfield They both

thoroughly enjoyed the presentation we prepared for them. It was about the history work that KS2

children had been learning, presented through song and photographs on our big screen. A treat was

in store for year 6; Mrs Roulen had brought home-made honey waffles and Belgian chocolates!

Learning from Others.

We would like to thank Hatfield Manor Junior

School and Hatfield Travis Infant School for

showing our school council what they do at

lunch-time. This year our school council are

looking into ways to make our lunch-time break

more interesting so the KS2 councillor visited

Manor School to see how they zoned their

playground for different activities. They had a

wonderful time representing the school and

were very well behaved. The KS1 councillors –

who were also well-behaved, enjoyed their visit

to Travis Infant School to investigate how they

organise their lunch-time. The school

councillors are now meeting to decide which of

the ideas they have seen to adopt for our

school.

With Christmas just around the corner, KS2

classes are preparing a traditional carol service

for the parents and friends of Hatfield Woodhouse Primary whilst KS1 and Foundation

will perform a Christmas show called „The Little

Red Robin‟.

In the next edition we will be telling you about

the exciting pantomime, which the whole school

will be attending in Hull.

Until then, have a very

Merry Christmas!

Seasons greeting to you all.,

A good gear change is so smooth that your passengers won‟t even notice it has taken place. To

achieve this smoothness, you must select a gear that matches the engine speed and road speed, and

you must use the accelerator and clutch skilfully. Your goal is to drive as smoothly as possible all

times.

Drivers often get a false perception of how smooth their driving is, because they have the steering

wheel for support. Ask your passengers for an assessment of your driving smoothness, or watch

them in your peripheral vision. If they are rocking around as you negotiate a roundabout or corner,

your technique isn‟t smooth enough and needs more work.

When changing up a gear, release the accelerator and depress the clutch simultaneously, and only

press the accelerator again as your foot is releasing the clutch.

Expert timing will produce silky-smooth changes every time. When changing down a gear, you‟ll

increase smoothness by matching the engine speed to the road speed with a brief blip of the

accelerator.

Good gear changes re also good for your car (and wallet). They keep your clutch and gearbox in

excellent, condition for longer and save petrol. Poor gear changes and “riding the clutch” causes

expensive premature wear.

Block changing-changing gear from say, third to fifth or fifth to second in one movement is an

important part of Advanced Driving.

Advanced Drivers make excellent progress by applying firm acceleration whenever it is safe and applicable. This could often mean reaching a 60mph speed limit in, say, third gear after an overtake

manoeuvre. What is the point in changing from third to fourth and fourth to fifth just to maintain

the same speed? This is an opportunity to minimise your driving inputs (and your fuel consumption)

by changing straight from third into top gear missing out fourth gear.

Like wise on approaching a roundabout or junction, slow your speed, by using your acceleration

sense or brakes, and then select the gear for your exit. This may well mean changing straight from

fifth to second. You should always aim to make gear changes after braking and before you turn the

steering wheel.

This produces a smooth, safe, progressive and

economical drive, which your passengers will

really appreciate.
