Holy Family Day School:Happy Advent! This time next month we will be entering in to a new calendar year. But, first let’s savor every moment of this joyous season as we enter the new liturgical year and prepare to celebrate the birth of Christ. In chapel and the classrooms, we are talking about waiting patiently. Oftentimes the quality of being patient is hard to find in today’s society. Take time out this Advent to slow down and savor some quiet time – make room in your life for Jesus Christ!

Farm Fresh: The Key Tags Have Arrived! For everyone who has been waiting so patiently, it’s time! The key tags are in the Day School Office during the week and available at the Welcome Office after each Mass on the weekend.

Holiday Food Drive:The Day School classes collected canned food items, brought them to school, sorted them, and watched the mountains of food grow in the Atrium the week before Thanksgiving. They were completely amazed on Monday morning to see that all that food had been bagged up and was ready to be given out to the many families in need during this holiday time. The opportunity to help others is an invaluable experience at any age!

CHURCH OF THE HOLY FAMILY VIRGINIA BEACH, VIRGINIA

THE YEAR OF MERCY: Pope Francis chose to inaugurate the “Jubilee Year of Mercy” last Tuesday because December 8 marks the 50th Anniversary of the closing of Vatican II. That council, Pope Francis reminds us, inaugurated a new phase in the Church’s history. The Spirit called the Church to tear down the walls that for far too long had made it a fortress, and to proclaim the Gospel in a new, more accessible way. Pope Francis quotes Saint John XXIII in declaring the Church’s preference for “the medicine of mercy,” and Blessed Paul VI in proposing the Good Samaritan as our model for discipleship (Misericordiae Vultus, 4). Pope Francis adds that God’s mercy is “the beating heart of the Gospel,” and that mercy “must penetrate the heart and mind” of every disciple (MV, 12). Three times today’s Gospel asks, “What should I do?” Pope Francis would say: Imitate Jesus, who came not wielding the fiery judgment that John the Baptist had threatened, but instead imparting healing, compassion, forgiveness – mercy!

“CARE FOR OUR EARTH:”In my article last weekend I mentioned green businesses without explaining them. Green businesses are environmentally and socially responsible companies. They adopt and operate on principles and practices that protect people and our Earth. THEY CARE FOR THEIR WORKERS, providing them with a living wage and healthy conditions to work in. THEY PROTECT THEIR CUSTOMERS, insuring that they use safe ingredients in their products to keep their customers and families healthy (toxins like lead, used in lipsticks and carcinogenic benezene, used in baby shampoo, would not be found in their products). THEY STRIVE TO IMPROVE THEIR COMMUNITIES by insuring that their facilities are not polluting their local communities and by taking steps to make the places that they call home more suitable living spaces. FRONTIER, a member owned co-op, selling natural and organic seasonings, SIMPLY ORGANIC selling pure, delicious extracts, the CALVERT FOUNDATION providing investments that are socially responsible channeling their dollars to organizations addressing real needs in low and middle income areas, the BETTER WORLD CLUB, a green alternative to AAA auto club, offering the same roadside assistance, auto insurance, and travel service AAA does, but with a green twist, and FAIR TRADE groups would be a few examples. Consider supporting these and other green businesses by directing your business to them and at the same time be contributing to the well-being of our Earth and its inhabitants.

Our gratitude to Alfie, our capable and talented pastoral associate, for the pertinent quotes from the pope’s encyclical,” Laudato Si,” which she has been including at the end of my weekly articles.
