MESSAGES

There are many reasons to be excited about the arrival of another WHL season. As the premier juniorhockey league in the world, we all take great interest in watching the remarkable progress our topprospects make during the course of the WHL season. From the established WHL veterans alreadydrafted by NHL Clubs, to the top rated prospects for the upcoming NHL Entry Draft, to the new crop ofhighly touted rookies entering the WHL, these young stars will excite fans in all of our WHL markets. The WHL provides an ideal environment for players to develop as they continue to pursue their dreamof playing in the NHL or representing their country in a major international competition. Many of thesetop draft eligible prospects for the 2014 NHL Draft will have the opportunity to showcase their skills asthe WHL hosts the CHL / NHL Top Prospects game, January 15, in Calgary. The WHL also takes great pride in offering our players the best academic and hockey opportunitiespossible, as we award over 325 WHL Scholarships to graduate players each season, while more than 20percent of all NHL players got their start in the WHL.As you cheer on your favorite WHL team in their quest to capture the Ed Chynoweth Cup and a berth inthe MasterCard Memorial Cup, I am sure you will enjoy watching the world’s finest young prospects inaction throughout the WHL.

Ron RobisonCommissionerWestern Hockey League

Greetings from the WHL

A Welcome from the President

Welcome back to another exciting year of Kootenay ICE Hockey. With the way the Hockey Club finished last year the 2013-2014 season has the potential to be very special. Mirrored in last place at Christmas, the Club posted the fifth best record in the WHL in the second half of the season and made the playoffs for a 15th straight year, while finishing with a .500 or better record for a 14th consecutive season (which are both the longest active streaks in the WHL).

Our organization has been very fortunate since moving to Cranbrook to enjoy an unparalleled amount of on ice success. This year for the first time in franchise history one of our players has the potential to be the first overall selection in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. With that comes added pressure to perform, but with reigning WHL Coach of the Year, Ryan McGill leading our team, Sam Reinhart and the rest of the players will receive the necessary guidance and leadership in achieving all of their goals.

With the invaluable experience our team gained last season, we expect our returning players along with our new prospects to once again battle for contention in the very competitive Eastern Conference. Our expectations of success both on and off the ice will not change. Our fans have come to expect a team that is hard working on the ice and ambassadors for Cranbrook and the entire East Kootenay region off the ice.

On behalf of the entire organization, welcome back and I hope you enjoy the game.

Jeff Chynoweth, President & Governor
