December 17, 2017

From the Pastor’s Desk,

This weekend, I want to explain one of the most beautiful traditions which many people do not even think about or enjoy. With Fr. Joseph’s help we are going to celebrate a Christmas Novena here at St. Agnes. The final week of Advent, beginning on December 17th, the Christmas Novena is built around the O Antiphons. Their main theme is messianic, stressing the hope of the Savior’s coming. Within them Jesus proclaimed by various titles, mainly taken from the prophet Isaiah. Each O Antiphon begins with an invocation of the expected Messiah, followed by praise of him under one of his particular titles. Each ends with a petition for God’s people, corresponding to the title by which he is addressed in the Antiphon.

On December 17th, Wisdom from the Most High: O holy Word of God, you govern all creation with your strong yet tender care. Come and show your people the way to salvation.

On December 18th, Ruler of House of Israel: the Lord will be there with us, majestic, our judge, the Lord our lawgiver, the Lord our King, he it is who will save us.

On December 19th, Root of Jesse: remember that Jesse was the father of King David, and the prophet Micah had prophesied that the Messiah would be of the house and lineage of David and be born in David’s city, Bethlehem.

On December 20th, Key of David: O royal Power of Israel controlling at your will the gate of Heaven, leading the captive people into freedom and He will rule forever.

On December 21st, Rising Dawn and Dayspring: for the people who have walked in darkness have seen a great light; upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom a light has shown.

On December 22nd, King of the Gentiles: a King of all the nations, and He shall judge between the nations and impose His justice and terms on all peoples.

On December23rd, Emmanuel: the King and lawgiver, the desire of the nations and Savior of all peoples. The title itself means, “God is with us.”

Many people have asked me, “Aren’t novenas supposed to be nine days?” The Christmas Novena continues at the Christmas Eve Mass when I sing the Christmas Proclamation and concludes on Christmas Day with Mass and the Gospel of Jesus’ Birth from John’s account.

I invite everyone this year to share in this beautiful Advent tradition leading up to the celebration of our Lord’s birth on Christmas. Let the Christmas Novena help make this a truly spiritual time. The Novena begins at 7 pm and will conclude at 7:30 and on Tuesday thru Friday we will host our open rectory with all of our 44 trees, villages and 60 nativity sets from around the world. Come and pray, come and enjoy one another’s company during this hectic time of the year.

WE ARE CALLED

Did you watch Best Advent Ever the day that Allen Hunt spoke about Saint Paul’s time in prison? The Roman prisons, according to Dr. Hunt, were in caves or very deep, dark, dank holes in the ground. Prisoners were lowered into the hole and only received food if their friends lowered some to them. Many, of course, died. In spite of the horrible conditions, St. Paul kept telling people to “Rejoice in the Lord!”

I have goose bumps just writing this. I even freeze in the chapel during Adoration. No one else does, it’s just me. But after reading Dr. Hunt’s account, I will never say that again. I will still take my blanket in, but mum will be the word. -Ginny Smithberg

This Week’s Stewardship Message

All of the people in today’s readings - the prophet Isaiah, the Virgin Mary, St. Paul, St. John the Baptist - seemed to understand clearly and rejoice in what God was calling them to be and to do...Do I?

BINGO UPDATE We have some GREAT news! Helen Rapp has agreed to do pay outs on the fourth Wednesdays of the month. She came in for orientation last month and did such a good job. I always tell new volunteers that I’ll stay with then until they tell me to, “Go away.” After a few times she smiled and said, “I think I can do this.” And she did.

If you’d like to be a part of this bingo ministry, give John or Ginny a call at 417-889-7052. We’d love to have some people who would volunteer either one time a month or just fill in if someone is unable to cover their position. It’s a great way to get to know our parishioners, have fun, and help our parish. -Ginny Smithberg

Advent has arrived and a new liturgical year has begun. Make a spiritual resolution for yourself to grow closer to God this coming year. Prayerfully consider committing to one hour a week with Jesus at adoration. Please call Joyce

THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER Children who are poor make toys out of the unlikeliest things: milk cartons, nails, bottle caps, sticks, plastic bags, corn cobs, clothespins. Folks who have plenty consider these things trash. Their abject need gives them a different perspective, seeing blessing where the rich see only waste. Material poverty is a scourge on our planet, and we must never make excuses for it. We must work tirelessly for decent conditions for every human person. As we work, we can learn from the special perspective of our brothers and sisters who do not have enough to live. We can see how depending on others for resources can transform a rich person's trash into a poor child's treasure.
