Dear Ross:

Re: Southern Region Geohazard Assessment

Fall 2011 Instrumentation Monitoring Results

Site S37: Highway 533:02, Springhill Creek Slumps

This letter documents the Fall 2011 instrument readings at the above-noted site and presents

an updated site plan sketch, instrument data, and plots.

1.0 OBSERVATIONS

1.1 Field Program and Instrumentation Status

Two slope inclinometers (SI’s) were read at the S37 – Highway 533:02 site on November 1,

2011 by Mr. Tyler Clay, EIT of AMEC Environment & Infrastructure (AMEC), a division of AMEC

Americas Limited.

The SI’s were read using a metric Slope Indicator probe and Digitilt Datamate readout

manufactured by Durham Geo Slope Indicator (DGSI). Inclinometer reading depths were

referenced to the top of the SI casing.

Please refer to the attached Figure S37-1 for a site plan showing the instrument locations.

The instruments at the site were installed following a call-out inspection performed at the site on

February 18, 20101. The site has been exhibiting cracking across the road surface and slumping

in the southeast embankment slope. The slumping of the embankment slope was interpreted as

shallow landslide movement, and the cracking across the road surface was interpreted as

deeper movement involving much of the road embankment. The instrument installations were

recommended to confirm these assumptions and to establish ongoing monitoring of slope

movement and groundwater pressure at the site.

1 AMEC report, “Hwy 533:02 – KM 22 Hill Slumps, Report of February 18, 2010 Site Inspection”,

submitted to Alberta Transportation, March 2010, AMEC File No. CG25309.D.

2.0 INTERPRETATION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

2.1 General

Plots of the instrument data are presented in the attached figures, and summarized in the following sections.

2.2 Zones of Movement

No active movement zones have been identified.

2.3 Interpretation of Monitoring Results and Recommendations

2.3.1 Interpretation

SI 10-1 (Figures S37-2 and S37-3)

• There was apparent downslope movement between 4 to 10 m depth during the period between April 14 and May 27, 2010, but without a distinct shear zone. There has been no movement detected at this zone since. The movement prior to May 2010 is judged to be due to settlement of the borehole backfill. No movement zones have been confirmed to date.

SI 10-2 (Figures S37-4 and S37-5)

• The May 2010 readings showed apparent movement in the upper 2.5 m; however, this

was likely due to settlement around a casing extension that was installed after the initial reading set, as noted on the installation record. No other movement zones have

been detected as of the November 2011 readings.

Vibrating Wire Piezometers VW 10-3 and VW 10-4 (Figure S37-6 and Tables S37-3 and S37-4)

The piezometers could not be located, and are likely buried under road debris. For reference,

the May 2011 readings of these piezometers showed equivalent piezometric depths as follows:

• VW 10-3 –approximately 10.8 m below ground surface.

• VW 10-4 –approximately 8 m below ground surface.

Based on the May 2011 piezometer readings, it appears that groundwater seepage is occurring downwards through the site area, with probable discharge zones at the creek level.

2.3.2 Recommendations

The SI’s have not shown any confirmed ground movement since the initial readings in

April 2010. There has been active movement observed near the scarps along the slope

adjacent to the road; however, there has been relatively little additional damage to the road

surface during the same period. Therefore, it is recommended that the reading frequency for

Page 3: December 19, 2011 CG25352.300 Mr. Ross Dickson Alberta ... Landslide… · This letter documents the Fall 2011 instrument readings at the above-noted site and presents an updated

this site be reduced to annual readings, with the next readings scheduled for Fall 2012. If

ground movement is confirmed from future readings or damage to the road surface is observed

during the 2012 annual inspection or from the MCI, the monitoring and inspection frequency

should be revaluated.

3.0 INSTRUMENTATION REPAIRS AND MAINTENANCE REQUIRED

The piezometers should be recovered using a metal detector during the next reading cycle. No

repairs are required at this time.
