Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Gary Greene Presents $65,000 Check to The Sunshine Kids

The Bay Area office of Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Gary Greene presented a check for $65,000 to The Sunshine Kids Foundation on November 27 at theBay Oaks Country Club Golf Course. The funds were raised at the Walk the Red Carpet event held earlier this year.

Office manager Debra Blenderman said it was very rewarding to present the check to the charity that works so hard to help children diagnosed with cancer. “Their mission is to bring a little sunshine into the life of a child who has a devastating illness, and we want to continue to help the Sunshine Kids as much as possible.”

Blenderman was joined by event co-chair Dan McCarver in presenting the check to Shannon Malone, director of operations for the Sunshine Kids, and G.W. Bailey, the nonprofit’s executive director and celebrity supporter.

Bailey, who plays Lieutenant Provenza on TNT’s hit series The Closer and Major Crimes, has an acting career that spans four decades. His true passion is his work with The Sunshine Kids Foundation.

As part of the benefit, Marilyn Eiland and Mark Woodroof, co-owners of the brokerage, were joined by G.W. Bailey in donating their time as lunch dates for

bidders during the live auction. Agents Joyce Adamiak, Jeanette Dickson, Susan Maki and Michael Parker teamed up for the winning bid, and were treated to lunch at Tony’s on November 27.

Established in 1982, the Sunshine Kids Foundation provides positive group activities and emotional support for young cancer patients. The foundation offers a variety of programs and events, free of charge, for children receiving cancer treatments in hospitals across the country.

Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Gary Greene supports the Sunshine Kids, with annual events raising more than $3 million thus far for the nonprofit organization.

No. As a reminder, landlords have until Jan. 1, 2013 to comply with a state law that went into effect on Sept. 11, 2011 requiring the landlord of a property with a lease signed before Sept. 1, 2011 to install smoke alarms in each bedroom, in each hallway that services multiple bedrooms, and on each level of the dwelling unit.

Per the Texas Property Code, the duty to install smoke alarms may not be waived. If a landlord

is not in compliance with the law on smoke alarms, a tenant may seek remedies, such as a judgment for damages related to the violation and court costs.

For two ways to alternatively comply with the requirements relating to smoke alarms, see Property Code, Section 92.2571.

Each year, nine women from the Sugar Land area get together to support a great cause and kick off the holiday season, in style! Organized by Karen Daly, the morning begins with a pot-luck brunch at her house before the women leave in a limousine to view each of the six gorgeous, professionally decorated homes that benefit Child Advocates of Fort Bend.

Since 1991, Child Advocates has provided a voice to more than 8,000 children. "We provide a voice for abused and neglected children because we believe every child has a right to be in a safe and permanent home." Always looking for volunteers, there are four ways to help. You can work directly

with the children, you can assist in fund raising efforts, help out in the office, or join their group Friends of CAFB, geared to support the special needs of the children like summer camp or tutoring.

Or you can do something similar like the Mimosa Mamas and organize your friends to view the homes. Karen Daly started the group when she first moved to Sugar Land as a way to do something charitable, yet make new friends as well. “There are so many good organizations meeting the needs of our community. It's easy to find fun and unique ways to support their fundraising efforts and the Mimosa Mamas are a wonderful example and tradition.”

Mimosa Mama's Celebrate 4th Annual Casa Home Tour

Mimosa Mamas enjoyed the Casa Home Tour recently.

A crowd of more than 5,000 people enjoyed an evening of fun at Missouri City’s 29th annual Snowfest Festival that featured a special tree lighting ceremony with fantastic colorful fireworks, the world’s tallest snowman bounce house and a giant Snowhill on Friday, Dec. 7 at the City Hall Complex on Texas Parkway.

Residents who attended the Festival were encouraged to bring an unwrapped toy to donate to the Santa’s Exchange Project.

The toy drive will provide gifts for thousands of deserving children in Fort Bend County.

The following day, Dec. 8, hundreds lined the streets for the annual Snowfest Parade which featured 53 entries. The two-mile long parade included bands, colorful floats and cars, boy and girl scout groups, churches and businesses and organizations from throughout the City that kicked off at the corner of Murphy Road and Cartwright Road.

FOOT FACTSby Dr. Eric Tepper

BOARD CERTIFIED PODIATRIST, ACCPPS

When it comes to your feet, strains, sprains, bruises, and injuries caused by overuse should be addressed immediately by icing the affected area. Ice cubes or crushed ice in a sealable plastic bag will work. Even a bag of frozen corn or peas will conform to the injured area and sufficiently address the issue. Make sure to place a thin towel on the foot to act as a protective layer between the ice and the skin. To avoid any chance of damaging the tissues, any icing should be limited to 15 or 20 minutes at the most. Once the area has become warm to the touch again, the icing procedure may be repeated.

We are specialists in medicine and surgery for the foot and ankle and we would like to welcome you to our practice. Our state of the art office is located at 3143 Hwy. 6 South. Podiatrists are in demand more than ever today because of a rapidly aging population. In addition, foot disorders are among the most widespread and neglected health problems affecting people in this country. We offer comprehensive foot care by appointment. Please call us at 281-980-3668. Don't take your feet for granted - call us for an appointment. Make your next step a comfortable one - call us for an appointment.

HINT: It’s best to wait about an hour before icing an injured foot again.

very pleased the Commissioner’s have the confidence in me to ask me. I feel that I’ve learned many of the do’s and don’t over the past 28 years and I approve and appreciate, as well as have great confidence, in our city’s administration and its employees.”

As a city we will have many growth and new business opportunities, added Moore, in a recent interview.

Referring to city programs such as recycling, on-line bill pay, and the upgrading of equipment, she added that with the new innovations that have been occurring the city will continue to move forward. “The city has a very good working relationship with local and public officials, the county judge and Commissioner Morrison,” she said. “The cities of Rosenberg and Richmond have a good working relationship and we’re sound financially. We

balance our budgets..”Moore feels there is so

much more to look forward to once the completion of Wessendorff Park occurs and new developments in Historic Richmond and the Farmer’s Market expand.

Moore, whose maternal grandfather served as a Fort Bend county judge, has deep roots in Richmond. Her parents, Billie Hunter and Jack Wendt, are active civic leaders on state and national levels and in the

the community as well..Moore’s service to the city, county and state has included serving as president and as a docent of the Fort Bend County Museum Association, a trustee of the Southwest Cattle Raiser’s Association, an officer in the Richmond Garden Club, a member of the OakBend Hospital Board, and as a member of the Fulshear Cemetery board. She is currently active in the Friends of the Fort Bend County Historical Commission. She

more economical than the conventional methods of building a water tower.

While the structure itself is nothing to get excited about, it certainly has proven to catch the attention and curiosity of commuters along the Southwest Freeway.

Past due red light camera fines are $100, but collection agency use by city alleged to be false

Solutions (ATS), which operates the Safe Light Sugar Land program “allowing police officers to focus on other law enforcement activities that enhance public safety,” said Adolph.

Capt. Van, a sea captain who goes by the short name, says that Sugar Land's recent account is false about the use of a collection agency for the unpaid fines. Last week he even filed an open records request with the city, still pending, asking for the name and contact information of the collection agency used by ATS. Capt. Van said a city representative told him the city is not allowed to deal directly with a collection agency, a red flag to Capt. Van. But, it’s ATS which “uses a collection agency as part of their agreement with the city,” said Adolph, and it “manages the relationship with the collection firm.

At this point, not satisfied with the response from Sugar Land, Capt. Van maintains that this “is a blatant attempt to cover-up the fact that RLC (Red Light Camera) fines are

virtually voluntary.” However, Adolph told the "Star" on Monday that “payment is not voluntary per state law.” He also said that ATS handles collections “per the agreement,” although he did not disclose the name of the collection agency.

Sugar Land reports 14,686 violations with an 80 percent collection rate for the last fiscal year ending in Sept. “Net red

light camera collections totaled $529,636,” and 50 percent or $264,818 was sent to the state, he said. Adolph also said that revenue from red light penalties in Sugar Land goes into a special city account for traffic safety programs, intersection improvements, public safety programs and traffic enforcement, including the Safe Light Sugar Land initiative.

has been actively engaged in the rice farming industry with her sisters for many years.

Moore recalls that she was in the first group of women allowed to enter Texas A&M University in the fall semester. “Previously women were only allowed to go to A&M in the summer school, and only if married to an Aggie or the daughter of a professor.”

“I will do my best to honor my husband’s memory and the integrity of our city,” said Moore.

Moore was appointed on the local government code, Section 24.026, which describes how a general law city can fill a vacancy. City Commissioner’s include Bill Dostal and Gary Gillen. City manager is Teri Vela.

Two men are wanted in connection with a robbery at the Walmart store in north Fort Bend County off Texas 99 near Bellaire just south of the rural Katy area.

On Monday, December 17, 2012, Sheriff’s spokesman Bob Haenel said, “Fort Bend County Crime Stoppers, Inc. will pay up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the subjects involved in a robbery of a Katy-area Wal-Mart Supercenter.” According to Haenel, sheriff’s deputies were called to investigate a robbery at 10:11 a.m., on the morning of November 30, 2012. He said, “Two suspects placed two

flat-screen televisions into a cart, covered them with a blanket and walked out of the building with them.”

He went on to explain that the two men loaded the TVs into a black Chevrolet vehicle, then began to leave the parking lot.

A store employee was out in the parking lot trying to get a description and license plate on the suspect vehicle when the car drove up beside the employee.

Haenel said, “One suspect exited the vehicle and attacked the associate with his fists. He knocked the associate to the

ground, got back into the vehicle and the suspects fled the scene.”

In the ensuing investigation, the attacker has been

identified as Dytedric Fortune, 19, of Houston. The second suspect has yet to be identified; however, they are believed to be in the Houston area.

Detectives are seeking information on Fortune’s location and the identity of the second suspect. He is described as a black male between the ages of 18 and 25. He is believed to be between

5', 9", i to 6", with a medium build and has long braided hair. At the time of the incident He was wearing an orange Texas Longhorn sweatshirt. Both men are believed to be in the Houston area.

Information which leads to the apprehension and filing of charges on the suspects involved could earn a reward of up to $5,000.

Call Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office at 281-341-4665, Fort Bend Crime Stoppers, Inc. at 281-342-TIPS (8477) or text plus the tip to CRIMES (274637).

To be or not to be – world to end Friday just like Mayan calendar?

MAYAN, continued from page 1

end of the world…this Friday. This has fueled what many call wild theories about threats and disasters relating to rouge planets, asteroids and intense polar storms among many other scenarios. But Fort Bend County Judge Bob Hebert says, “I’m not losing any sleep over it.”

“I think the significance of Dec. 21 on the calendar is that we only have three shopping days until Christmas,” said Judge Hebert, adding that there could be something catastrophic, but, “I don’t think that it would happen in conjunction with any primitive calendar system, no matter how sophisticated they were back then in counting their days."

Another county official, District Clerk Dianne Wilson has come up with her own approach at checking out whether time will have run out on us all. “I have it on

my calendar to call my son in Australia and see if he answers because it will already be the next day, and if he answers, then I’ll know it’s a hoax and if he doesn’t answer, I’m going to get real concerned.” On a more serious note, Wilson believes that Dec. 21 will represent the end of an era. “It’s the end of a life cycle,” and “we will start a new life cycle, whatever it may be. I don’t know, but I don’t think it’s the end of the world.”

Just like Wilson, there are others out there that say this will be a new beginning. NASA scientists have been reportedly studying and analyzing the possibility of the earth ending in 2012, but the conclusion is that Dec. 21, 2012 will be nothing more than a normal December solstice.

It’s also the birthday of the “Star’s” General Manager Michael Fredrickson, and probably the beginning of another great year for him!

invasion off Old South in the apartment complex. As luck would have it – the deputies, both Sheriff’s and Constable’s, who were crawling, all over the neighborhood - were right there…right now!

Yep, it was like someone threw a picnic and invited ALL the ants! Seems the suspect, in this yet to be determined just exactly what kind of case

this was, tried to get away from a deputy Sheriff, with deputy Constables in the hunt. In fact, He was so determined to get away, he jumped over an apartment railing, the impressive part – the cops snagged the crook in mid-air!

Yep, just one of those days when it all comes together - with a little mid-air crook acrobatics; and cop teamwork. Wow!

Impressive, very impressive.

Dear Editor,

Robert McNees in last week’s letter to the editor is grossly misinformed. I am not now nor have I ever been a lawyer. I am a professional merchant seaman, ex-Naval officer and anti-red light camera activist.

McNees is also way off the mark in his support of RLCs as a safety measure. He has unwittingly succumbed to the big lie technique of political propaganda which

is: Many people will come to believe a lie must be true if it is big enough and is loudly repeated often enough. The lie here is that red light cameras reduce accidents.

No such reduction has taken place in Sugar Land and the silence of the city in this regard is very telling. All the studies proclaiming the safety benefits of red light cameras have been thoroughly discredited by numerous impartial researchers. An excellent source of these is here: www.motorists.org/

red-light-cameras/studiesI have never gotten a red

light camera ticket nor am I opposed to strict enforcement of the red light law, but Sugar Land’s program is unfair to the driving public. And, because the promised reduction in accidents has not occurred it needs to be shut down.

It also must be pointed out that the claim made by the city’s spokesman that a collection agency is used by the city to go after unpaid RLC fines is false. It is a blatant

attempt to cover-up the fact that RLC fines are virtually voluntary. There are three reasons a vehicle owner might feel justified in refusing to pay the fine. These are explained here: www.houstoncoalition.net/three_reasons

Ray Patel, in his letter in the same edition, requested that the city ban red light cameras. While hoping for his success, I will continue my petition drive. Volunteers are needed.

The burned body of an unidentified woman was found Monday in Fulshear.

Fulshear Police Chief Kenny Seymour said about 10:30 that morning a local rancher was checking his property when he discovered the burned remains of a woman and called authorities. Seymour said, “The body was found in a rural area located in the 6000 block of Katy Fulshear Road in Fulshear Texas.”

Katy Fulshear Road runs north off FM 1093/FM 359, east of the old town of Fulshear, and in between

Woman’s body found in Fulshear

Huggins Elementary and the new LCISD Bus Barn. Although the area has seen rapid suburban growth, this area still remains rather rural.

Seymour said, “Our first objective is to determine who the victim is and where she is from.” He said that the Fulshear Police Department was working in conjunction with the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Department to identify the victim.

The body was only described as that of a small stature female. Further information is expected after the completion of the autopsy by the Galveston County Medical Examiner.

He fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash in a silver or grey Jeep Commander.

The suspect was described as a black male, about 6’, weighing 240 pounds; with a stocky build. At the time of the incident he was wearing a grey t-shirt, blue jeans, black tennis shoes and a black ski mask.

Fort Bend ISD’s Community Partnerships Department welcomed more than 150 Volunteers In Public Schools (VIPS) to its annual VIPS Salute, held at the FBISD Administrative Annex. The event is held each year to honor volunteers for the wonderful contributions they make to students and schools.

Welcoming guests to the event were Michael McKie, FBISD Acting Superintendent; Pamela Shaw, Volunteers and Partnerships Coordinator; Bobbie Anderson, Shared Dreams Facilitator; and Reba Cook, Volunteers and Partnerships Administrative Assistant. As guests arrived, they enjoyed spirited music performed by Dulles High School’s Encore String Quintet, directed by Michael Isadore, and viewed a slide presentation highlighting volunteers in action. In keeping with the spirit of the season, guests were also invited to bring donations of canned fruit, soup or cereal to benefit the District’s Shared Dreams Holiday Cheer program.

Pamela Shaw kicked off the program by welcoming the honored guests and thanking

them for sharing their time and talents with the District. Michael McKie followed, echoing Shaw’s sentiments. “Volunteers are an integral part of our equation and the backbone that supports the efforts of our teachers and school staff,” he said. “Without you, we wouldn’t get the job done.”

Also attending the Salute were: Grayle James, FBISD Board Member; Dr. Rhonda McWilliams, Assistant Superintendent; Dr. Phillys Hill, Assistant Superintendent;

Dr. Javier Villarreal, Assistant Superintendent; and Robert Calvert, Chief Information Officer. They each personally thanked volunteers representing various campuses for the remarkable job they do in support of FBISD schools.

Before guests departed, Shaw joined Nancy Porter, Chief Communications Officer, and Stacey Crews, Communications Director, in presenting door prizes that were generously donated by area merchants.

AARP Sugar Land Chapter 4075 distributed one of three holiday donations at their November monthly meeting. City of Sugar Land Firefighter, Darryl Teague accepted the first donation to be used for the purchase of toys. Presenting the gift is Tom Garguilo, AARP Board of Directors. Other recipients of AARP donations will include The Fort Bend Women's Center and Wreaths Across America (Houston National Cemetery).

The annual Candlelight Tour once again a success

The annual Candlelight Tour, offered by Fort Bend County Museum in Richmond, and hosted by the Museum Docents, was a success.

Candlelight Tour opened Friday through the first weekend in December, and this year over 350 visitors toured the Moore Home, which was decorated for Christmas inside and out. Each room of the house, hosted a docent tour guide, provided a history of that room, bits and pieces of interesting trivia about the past residents, and additional history about Richmond and the community.

Every year, people who have lived in the county for most or all of their lives, come out to tour the Moore Home, for the first time.

“However, some families have made the Candlelight Tour a yearly tradition, others are drawn to the particular themes of the tour, and every year we have new faces. On the Friday of the tour weekend, senior adult tours are provided during the morning and early afternoon, so that the retirement and assisted living homes may bring their residents, many of these come annually,” said Claire Rogers, spokesperson, Fort Bend County Museum.

The John M. Moore Home was built in 1883 by John M. Moore (1862-1940) for his bride, Lottie Dyer. A prosperous rancher, Moore served in the state legislature and in the U.S. Congress. Following his 1905 election to Congress, he remodeled the home from its original Victorian design to a neo-classical style popular in the early 20th century. Richmond’s First Baptist Church was founded in the house and noted politicians and cattlemen often visited.

“The house will stay decorated all through the month of December so we will continue to give tours of the house . Many school groups sign-up for programs during this month specifically so that they can tour the house while it is decorate,” Rogers said.

Over the Candlelight weekend and throughout the month of December, over 500 schoolchildren are expected to learn about Fort Bend County, as they tour the home.

The Candlelight Tour takes approximately eight months of planning, according to Felesa Baker, who served her fourth term as chair of this event.

After the tour, visitors were invited to enjoy wassail and cookies on the patio, and browse the gift shop.

The Fort Bend County Museum Association has preserved and interpreted Fort Bend County and Texas history for nearly 40 years.

The Fort Bend Star announces the launch of a new online and on demand TV show in 2013 about real estate professional and companies in Fort Bend County. To be produced by Star Digital Studios, each weekly, 15-minute show will feature in-depth interviews, real estate agents and their listings, current mortgage rate information and real estate issues. The Fort Bend Real Estate/Hot Properties Show is already showing community interest from prospective advertisers who will be offered 30 second commercial spots which can also be produced by Star Digital Studios. Two interviews will each highlight a guest and the company with whom the person is associated. There will also be a photo segment for a real estate agent showcase of listings.

Mortgage billboard ads will be included in the show and are available for purchase. These will keep prospective buyers and sellers on top of current rates for the hot property listings. “The new real estate show is being made available in conjunction with the existing real estate ad section in the Fort Bend Star,” said Michael Fredrickson, its managing editor. “We’re very excited to be expanding our impact as one of the advertising leaders along these lines, and we hope to be offering those already in this area and others moving to Fort Bend with valuable real estate information.”

To inquire about advertising on the Fort Bend Real Estate/How Properties Show, contact Becky Hall at 281-690-4205 or Jerry Poscovsky at 713-569-4204 to schedule an appoint-ment to see our demo dvd.

Shown are members of FBISD’s Diversity Conference Committee and the District Student Advisory Committee. Pictured (front row, from left) are: Jill Anderson, Valerie Vaughn, Renee Edwards, Joanna Ritterbeck, Greg Foulds, Ilene Harper, Priscilla Cordero, Demetria Howard, and Annette Henderson; and (back row, from left) Keryn Miles, Michael Bevan, Milan Doshi, Twinkle Joseph, Dimple Joseph, Nicholas Tripp, Kelly Ann Medrano, Sheree Henry, and Chris Sabbagh; and Derek Smith.

For the third consecutive year, the Fort Bend ISD Administration Building has been designated a “No Place for Hate” building by the Anti-Defamation League of Houston (ADL). “No Place for Hate” is a campaign against prejudice, bigotry and discrimination of all kinds. The program helps set a standard of respect for diversity and anti-bias efforts in schools across the state.

To become a “No Place for Hate” campus, participants complete the Commitment, Intent, and Coalition Forms and sign the Primary or Secondary Resolution of Respect Form. Participants must also complete at least three anti-bias activities, documenting the activities on an Activity Form.

FBISD was recognized for hosting its annual High School Diversity Conference,

coordinating the “No Place for Hate” Youth Summit, and hosting the “Peace, Love and Respect” High

School Quiz Bowl. Each event helped promote respect and appreciation of the District’s diverse cultures.
