Piano players and lovers ofpiano music, especially Steinwaypianos, will enjoy a new book byJames Barron, “Piano: The Makingof a Steinway Concert Grand.”
Barron, a staff reporter forThe New York Times and accom-plished amateur pianist, tells thefascinating and enlightening story ofSteinway, one of the most recogniz-able names in music both to buffsand neophytes. He follows the com-pany’s number one product, theConcert Grand K0862, from aremote spruce forest in BritishColumbia to the Steinway factory inQueens, New York. The story of theK0862’s 11-month journey to com-pletion is a captivating narrative witha disparate cast of characters fromHenrich Englehard Steinweg, theGerman cabinetmaker who beganmaking pianos in his kitchen beforemoving to New York in 1850, to hismarketing savvy sons to present-day individuals who work faithfullyon each piece of a K0682.
The Wall Street Journal hailsPiano as “Engrossing…Barronmakes it vividly clear that the con-struction of grand piano is a skilledand labor-intensive process…Anaffectionate view of one of two greatartisans of Western musical cul-ture.”
And, The Fort Worth Star-Telegram proclaims “By the end ofthe book, Barron has turned a 990-pound hulk of wood and metal…intoa living, breathing main character.”
