Winter and the Holiday Season are upon us. As I write this I am preparing for the family get together at Thanksgiv-

ing and the December holiday season is not far behind. The days are getting shorter, and with daylight savings time over it seems like we have very little sunlight in a day with even less time to get everything done.

This time of year can be stressful for so many. The pressures of the holidays and trying to make everything perfect for everyone can try even the most positive of us. Something that works for me is focusing on what it is that brings me joy. Since

I am not a shopper, I have reduced the number of gifts I buy and increased some entertaining. I would rather spend my money and time with good friends and fam-ily than at a mall shopping. But for those who do love to shop, earth friendly and fair trade options are becoming more readily available. By being kind to our earth we can give so much more than just a present. Gift certificates for services are another good way to give.

In this month’s feature article, Everyday Grace, Finding the Sacred in Everyday Life on page 20, Lisa Marshall examines the many different ways we can find spiritual-ity in our everyday life. Being raised Roman Catholic, going to church every week was part of my life growing up. It is not something that I continued to do on my own, as I have taken my own path to spirituality and goodness, however; many find comfort and community in the structure of an organized religion. The number of people who are not affiliated with any particular faith continues to grow. And yet, most of us believe in some form of God, or spirit, and many of us pray and meditate. Walls are no longer required to appreciate spirituality, although for many belonging to a church and being with like-minded people is just as important as being in nature to others.

Travel is a great way to expand your mind, your horizons and awaken your con-sciousness. We were lucky enough to spend a week in Sedona AZ last month. There are few words to describe the wonder of Sedonas amazing rock formations or the Grand Canyon. While hard to imagine this mostly desert land was once the bottom off an ocean and once again home to some of the earliest forms of life on this planet, to see it is to realize all that the earth and nature is capable of. Travel can also open you up to different cultures, thoughts and beliefs. It’s good to get outside of your own space sometimes and realize there really is a whole big world out there. While we love our little state, we are part of something much bigger. Enjoy it!

After Loss Expo:Messages of Hope & Eternal Love

Created to bring options when dealing with grief, the Fourth Annual After Loss Expo will take place on

December 11 from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Sheraton Providence Airport Hotel in Warwick. Presented by The Inspiration Foundation and its CEO and Founder, Roland Comtois, the expo will feature numerous keynote speakers,

presenters, healers and resource people who have volun-teered their services to guide and support attendees through the

grieving process. “Grief and loss are uniquely challenging events in one’s life, and no two people deal with it the same way,” explains Comtois. “Therefore, finding the right support to guide you through the process is most imperative.” The expo encourages the bridging together of metaphysical philosophies with traditional and non-traditional therapies, in order to begin to encourage the heal-ing within. “By restoring your energy with Reiki or relaxation exercises, learning to quiet the mind or receiving nutritional choices to support your body, you can begin to move through the pain and suffering,” says Comtois. Whether sitting in a healing circle or in a garden, sharing feelings in a group setting, or receiving spiritually charged channeled messages, the expo is designed to help participants begin to untangle the deep sadness within. Also on tap for the day: Channeled Messages for the Soul from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. and Soul Stories with Roland Comtois live radio broadcast at 2 p.m. The After Loss Expo is open to the public and is free.

Sheraton Providence Airport Hotel is located at 1850 Post Road in Warwick. For more information and to register, visit BlessingsByRoland. Due to limited seating for scheduled events, pre-registration is suggested. See ad page 7.

For those trying to keep up with overloaded schedules during this busy holiday season, Infinite Potential is of-

fering complimentary consultations. According to owner, Dave Monson, Infinite Potential works with healthy, thriving individuals who find themselves frustratingly unsuccessful at this time of year. “We help by developing improved strategies for managing your life, family and commitments around the holidays,” he says. “In November and December greater attention is demanded from every area of life and people often work harder, but not always smarter, to meet their own desires and expectations, as well as those of loved ones.” Infinite Potential can assist in developing concrete steps to successfully navigate the holiday season, leaving cli-ents feeling more satisfied, empowered and even invigorated to begin the New Year.

Infinite Potential is located at 181 Main Street, Second Floor, in Blackstone, MA. For more information or to schedule a no obligation consultation, call 508-883-1007 or email [email protected]. See ad page 19.

New Location for Women’s Group Fitness

Margie Caldwell, group fitness instructor and personal trainer, has moved the location of her classes to better suit the needs

of her clients. The Sculpt and Tone class, which includes a light cardio warm-up and resistance training sets mixed with short bursts of cardio to ramp up your metabolism, will be held at Caldwell’s personal training studio in Warwick. According to Caldwell, the move will allow the incorporation of more equip-ment such as stability balls, steps, and weights. The ZUMBA fitness classes will be held at Body Language Plus, located at 1170 Post Road in Warwick. This change allows for the class to be held in an improved environment with proper flooring and mirrors to assist in fol-lowing the dance moves more easily. Participants will be given a free two-week membership to the gym or will be allowed to continue classes as walk-ins for $8. “These changes will greatly enhance the quality of the classes,” says Caldwell.

The Power of Giving

Complications from gastric bypass surgery had left Linda Pazienza

with impaired motor skills, vision, speech, motor and writing skills. After some rehabilitation, her vision has improved somewhat due to visits to a neuro-opthamologist, and she can send emails and play cards. Determined to lose weight the natural way, Pazienza lost 200 pounds in the past two years through diet and exercise. She credits Jennifer Mello, owner of B.I.A. Fitness and Melissa Sischo, owner of The Journey Within, for helping her reach her fitness goals through personal training and yoga. Pazienza says she wants to help others lose weight and reach their health and wellness goals the con-ventional way. Therefore, she and her mother are providing a year of personal training and a gym membership at B.I.A. Fitness/The Journey Within to one overweight individual. In order to be considered, indi-viduals must be considered obese by standard evaluation, must be willing to work out six days a week and must sign an agreement of commitment. He or she must also work with a nutrition-ist and attend required meetings and doctor evaluations. Financial hardship is also a factor.

Interested parties should contact Jennifer Mello at 401-732-2899. For more information, visit BIA-Fitness.com. See ad on back cover.

Go Green for the Holidays

Green Envy Eco-Boutique in Newport invites you to shop green this holiday season,

with super deals on gift certificates. A $100 gift certificate can be purchased for only $85, and a $50 gift certificate for $45. To get the discounted price, just mention this article. “You can add a whole extra level to your holiday gift giving by choosing eco-friendly or Fair

Trade gifts,” says store owner Rachel Lessne. ”You are not only bringing joy to the gift recipient, but also turning around the lives of disadvantaged artisans in develop-ing countries, or helping to sustain the environment with a recycled or organic gift.” At Green Envy, which is located in the Brick Market Place, Rhode Island style is never sacrificed for sustainability. This season the store is filled with beautiful and unique gifts. Some of the bestsellers include mittens made from upcycled vin-tage wool garments (no two are alike), hand crafted ornaments carved from Tagua nuts, and desk clocks made from recycled records. Consider a bottle opener made from recycled bicycle chains for your beer loving brother, or one-of-a-kind funky jewelry for your great-aunt with the “unique” personality. “There is something for everyone,” says Lessne. “You can actually feel great about your purchases because you are supporting a great cause. The less fortunate and the environment will be better off because of your holiday shopping list. “

Winter Fun at Indoor Dog Park

Indoor Dog Park is now open at Alexandra Morgan’s Animal School

in Warren. Offered Sundays between 2:30 and 3:30, Indoor Dog Park welcomes dogs of all sizes and ages, as long as they are dog friendly. It’s a great way to give your dog some exercise and play time, even in the coldest winter weather. The cost is $5. If you are bringing your dog for its first visit, you must call ahead, so the dog can be evaluated to make sure it is suitable for Indoor Dog Park. Once accepted, your dog is welcome at all sessions. Trainer Alexandra Morgan also wants to remind dog owners that the holidays are “dog bite season” - when dogs are stressed by factors such as holiday visitors, changes around the house, and decreased attention and exercise from their overly busy owners. Her blog offers an article, “Happy Holidays and Welcome to Dog Bite Season,” which contains tips and advice on how to make the holidays easier on your dog. You can find the article by clicking the “Dog Blog” link on her web site, and scrolling down the blog page. New dog training classes at all levels are always starting at the Animal School. If a puppy is on your holiday gift list, it’s important to get yourself and your puppy into classes as soon as possible. The puppy’s “imprinting period” before 16 weeks, is a critical time to learn important social behaviors. And if you’re a Pug lover, don’t forget the East Bay Pug Meet-up, always held the first Saturday of every month (the January Meet-up will take place January 8).

For more information about Indoor Dog Park, new classes, and other services such as Dog Day Care, adoptions, and boarding, call 401-434-3687, visit at 84 Cutler Street #7 in Warren, or go to alexandramorgan.com. See ad page 35.

Learn to Protect Children from Common Illness

Dr. Gay Ben Tré, D.Ac., R.N, will present “Natural Im-mune Boosting for Children,” a workshop designed to

introduce parents to a simple but powerful protocol used to protect children from colds, sore throats, earaches, and other common childhood illnesses on Wednesday, December 8 at her Newport office and again on December 14 at her Provi-dence office. Both workshops are from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. She explains that children are exposed to new objects, people and experiences on a daily basis that he or she must integrate into his or her rapidly growing understanding of the world. These exposures, she says, will challenge the child to adapt and integrate this new information or let go of what is not useful. When it doesn’t create conflict, the child will eas-ily incorporate the new data; or if the child’s system registers the experience as not useful, the system easily and harm-lessly discards it. However, when a new experience creates a conflict for the child to integrate and appears to pose a threat of some kind, the child’s integrating capacity may be overwhelmed–which results in illness. “Mother Nature has designed children so they are maxi-mally receptive to their environment and to other people,” says Dr. Ben Tré. “For the most part, this is a brilliant plan and makes learning easy and helps guarantee survival.” As the brain matures, she explains that our systems automati-cally discriminate and exclude what we don’t want or isn’t

good for us, which we experience as increased im-munity. Dr. Ben Tré says that the workshop will discuss how parents can reduce the work for the child’s immune system, keeping it from going into overwhelm and keeping the child healthy. “At an appropriate age, the child can be directly included in the protocol and can choose to process upsetting experiences or encounters with support from an adult,” she explains. “Wonderful side benefits from this prac-tice are enhanced feelings of competence and control for the child, as well as a few minutes of loving quality time shared with the parent.”

Cost for the workshop is $25. Dr. Gay Ben Tré has offices located at 19 Friendship Street, Suite 300 in Newport, and 1 Richmond Square, Suite 103K in Providence. For more infor-mation, call 401-207-4670 or visit DrGayBentre.com. See ad on page 19.

Exceptional EndingsReally Good Raw DessertsOver indulging in sweets during the winter

festivities can produce unwanted weight gain

and a general feeling of sluggishness—a not-

so-wonderful gift for anyone. But adding a raw

food dessert to our holiday repertoire could

introduce a new, healthier tradition to holiday

occasions that’s welcomed by everyone.

by Judith Fertig

Raw Food Desserts KitchenAlthough no oven is used in making raw desserts, other electronic equipment is necessary.

Blender Makes sauces, puddings, smoothies and fillingsDehydrator Removes moisture from raw foods at 112° to 118° F; “bakes” cookiesFood Processor Makes nut crusts and fruit puréesElectric Juicer Presses and juices fruits and vegetables

A raw dessert no longer means only a simple piece of fruit or a handful of nuts. While a traditional holiday story conjures sleeping children with “visions of sugar-

plums” dancing in their heads, the dreams of raw dessert chefs more likely spring from Medjool dates, cacao nibs and exotic fruits. That’s because raw desserts are made from uncooked, minimally processed and generally plant-based foods. Raw foods aficionados say they are usually first at-tracted to this type of food preparation because the recipes do not contain wheat, refined sugar, eggs or dairy products, which eliminates the need to work around food sensitivities. Plus, they feel better after they’ve eaten a raw foods dessert, which might feature nuts, fresh and dried fruits, agave nectar and/or chocolate. When these raw foods are ground or puréed in a food pro-cessor or blender, they contribute mightily to dessert crusts, fill-ings, sauces and frostings to grace tarts, cakes, cookies, puddings and ice creams—all of which can be made without cooking. Sometimes, dessert recipes call for using a dehydrator, a simple appliance that dries foods slowly at around 112° to 118° F, to avoid the enzyme changes that occur when foods are cooked at higher temperatures. The dehydrator yields a charac-

teristic that raw foods enthusiast Nathalie Lussier describes as “...a warm, chewy, comfort food feeling, so that you can make cookies that come out slightly warm from the dehydrator.” With raw desserts, “You really can have your cake and eat it too, because the recipes are packed with nutrients and fiber,” advises raw desserts chef Heather Pace, the author of four raw dessert e-books, including Just Desserts and Raw Party Parfait. Most raw foods desserts, like most exceptional sweets, involve several steps to make each part. “While at first glance, a raw dessert might appear to be complicated and time-consum-ing,” notes Pace, “it’s really very simple. Each component can be thrown together quickly and easily and can be made ahead.” The benefits of raw desserts extend beyond the simply nutritional, affirm devoted adherents. Rose Lee Calabro, author of Living in the Raw and Living in the Raw Desserts, had experi-enced a host of personal health issues that virtually disappeared when she began to eat a mainly raw foods diet a decade ago. But more than that, she says, “Eating raw foods has contributed to a career change and a dramatic shift in my life.” According to eco-lifestylist and raw foods author Ani Phyo, “Eating more organic, fresh, whole foods helps us main-tain an ideal weight, lowers cholesterol, boosts the immune system and helps us look and feel our best.” But for her, as well, raw foods are more than a diet. She remarks, “It affects the way I live and interact with planet Earth and all other living beings.” Phyo is the author of Ani’s Raw Food Essentials, Ani’s Raw Food Desserts and Ani’s Raw Food Kitchen. Lussier agrees all the way around. “I believe raw foods can heal you on a physical, emotional and spiritual level,” she comments, because like many others, “I’ve personally experi-enced it myself.”

Chocolate Pecan Brownie with Maple Maca Ice Cream and Spiced Apple Compote “Picture a dense chocolate nut brown-ie, smooth, cold ice cream and warm fruit compote that has just the right touch of spice, with a velvety chocolate sauce to round it all out. If that weren’t enough, I garnish it with a drizzle of pure maple syrup,” says raw foods des-sert chef Heather Pace. She explains that Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is a Peruvian root with a strong flavor and recommends using only a little, until one is acclimated to the taste.

Serves 6 to 8

For the brownie:4 cups raw pecans½ cup pitted, packed Medjool dates¼ cup maple or palm sugar2/3 cup cacao powder2 tsp pure vanilla extractPinch of Himalayan or sea salt

For the ice cream:2 cups raw cashews2 cups waterSeeds from ½ vanilla bean1/3 cup maple syrup1 tbsp Maca root powder or to taste

For the compote:4 medium apples, peeled and cored½ cup maple syrup¼ cup raisins2 tbsp goji berries2 pitted Medjool dates, chopped1 tsp lemon zest½ tsp cinnamon¼ tsp nutmeg2 pinches ground cardamom

The Raw Food Dessert Pantryby Judith Fertig

A basic raw food dessert pantry includes plant-based foods that are in

the purest state possible. It differs from a conventional pantry in that items have undergone very little or no processing; plus, many familiar foods find new uses. Nuts become flours or milks for sauces. Natural sweet-eners replace highly processed sugar. Chocolate assumes its most natural state. Fresh, ripe fruits provide flavor and smooth texture. Dried fruits amplify taste and sweetness. Psyllium powder thickens sauces and fillings in place of flour, eggs, cornstarch or tapioca. Here’s a taste of the possibilities…

Nuts: Raw almonds, pecans, pine nuts, cashews

Sweeteners: Medjool dates, date sugar, maple sugar, palm sugar, agave nectar, maple syrup

Chocolate: Cacao nibs, cacao powder, carob

Fats: Coconut oil, nut butters, cocoa butter, cold-pressed oils

Flavorings: Whole vanilla bean, pure vanilla extract, spices, fresh citrus zest

Fresh fruits: Ripe bananas, avocado, pine-apple, strawberries, apples and pears

Dried fruits: Raisins, goji ber-ries, figs, desic-cated coconut

Thickeners: Psyllium powder

For the filling:1½ cups cashews1/3 cup agave syrup¼ cup liquid coconut oil¼ cup filtered water, as needed2½ cups chopped, cored pineapple

1. To make the crust, combine the cashews and vanilla in the food pro-cessor and chop to a crushed wafer texture (like a cookie crumb crust for cheesecake). Add the agave syrup and process to mix well. Sprinkle half of the crust onto the bottom of a loaf pan.

2. To make the filling, combine the cashews, agave syrup and coconut oil in a high-speed blender and blend until smooth, adding water as needed to create a creamy texture. Spoon the mixture into a mixing bowl; add the pineapple and stir to mix well. Spoon the filling into the loaf pan and sprinkle the remaining crust on top. Pat lightly. Freeze for 2 hours or until chilled. Will keep for 4 to 6 days refrigerated or for several weeks in the freezer.

For the chocolate sauce:1/3 cup cacao powder¼ cup pure maple syrup2 to 3 tbsp water2 tsp melted coconut oil

1. For the brownie, grind the pecans into crumbs in a food processor. Add the remaining ingredients and process into a moist, crumbly dough. Press the mixture into an 8-by-8-inch pan. Chill.

2. For the ice cream, blend all ingredi-ents until smooth and creamy. Chill for a few hours. Process through an ice cream maker according to the manufacturer’s instructions; or fill ice cube trays and freeze.

3. For the compote, soak the raisins and goji berries in water for 2 to 4 hours. Drain. In a food processor, chop the apples into small pieces. Add remaining ingredients to the apples, including the drained fruit, and stir together. Process half the mixture until smooth. Fold into the other half. Dehydrate for a few hours at 115° F, until the apples take on a warm, “cooked” feel.

4. For the sauce, blend all ingredients together until smooth.

5. To assemble the dessert, cut the brownies into portions and place a brownie on each plate. Top with ice cream. Swirl compote around the brownie and drizzle with chocolate sauce.

Pineapple Icebox DessertThe pineapple, a renowned symbol of hospitality for centuries, can make a refreshingly welcome holiday des-sert. “Pineapple is full of the enzyme bromelaine, which helps decrease inflammation and swelling—and that can translate to increased circulation and clear skin,” says Ani Phyo, of Ani’s Raw Food Desserts. “I always choose fresh when available, but frozen pine-apple will also work for this recipe.”

Makes 6 to 8 servings

For the crust:2 cups cashewsSeeds from 1 vanilla bean, or 1 tbsp alcohol-free vanilla extract2 tbsp agave syrup

Incredibly Decadent Chocolate CakeThis recipe from Rose Lee Calabro’s Liv-ing in the Raw Desserts gets its body from almonds, its sweetness from dates and agave nectar, and its scrumptious choco-lateyness from cacao nibs—all available at better grocery or health food stores. Plan ahead several days to allow time to soak and then dehydrate the almonds.

Makes 8 to 10 servings

For the cake:2 cups almonds; soak for 12 to 48 hours, then dehydrate for 18 hours2 cups pitted Medjool dates1/3 cup raw almond butter¼ cup raw cacao nibs, ground super fine; or cacao powder¼ cup agave nectar2 tsp vanilla extract

For the filling:2 large ripe bananas, thinly sliced

For the frosting:1 ripe avocado1 ripe banana5 pitted Medjool dates½ cup water1/3 cup pine nuts; soak in water 1 hour, then drain2 tbsp raw cacao nibs, ground super fine; or cacao powder1 tsp vanilla extract

1. For the cake, place the almonds in a food processor fitted with a steel blade and process into a fine meal. Gradual-ly add the dates, almond butter, cacao, agave nectar and vanilla extract, then continue processing until the mixture is well blended and forms a ball. If the mixture isn’t blending, add a small amount of water, as needed, to achieve the desired consistency. Divide the mixture into two equal parts (for two layers), and form each part into a round cake layer about 8 inches in diameter. Place each layer on a plate.

2. For the filling, arrange the sliced bananas on top of the bottom layer and place the second layer on top of the bananas.

3. For the frosting, combine all of the ingre-dients in a blender and process until smooth, thick and creamy. Frost the top and sides of the cake. Decorate with fresh strawberries or other seasonal fruit. Re-frigerate for 2 to 3 hours before serving.

A sunrise jog, a home-cooked meal with a friend, the smell of moist soil in a freshly tilled

garden, a smile from a stranger on the subway… Most would agree that such Earthly experiences can give us something to look forward to or add a spark to an otherwise ordinary day. But to an increasing number of people these ex-periences are nothing short of spiritual opportunities—a chance to tap into the Divine, beyond the walls of any synagogue or cathedral. “For a long time, there was an idea that there was only one way to do ministry, and that was within the church walls,” says Barbara Brown Taylor, author of An Altar in the World: A Geography of Faith. “But there is an explosion of spirit going on right now, and people are ex-perimenting with other ways to serve and seek that go way beyond that definition.” Taylor, an Episcopal minister, left

a 15-year stint as a parish preacher for life as an organic farmer and professor of spirituality at Columbia Theological Seminary, in Decatur, Georgia. She is among a host of faith leaders who have moved beyond the confines of the altar to shine a light on the sacred nature of the outdoors, physical activity, food, garden-ing and even mundane workaday tasks. The proliferation of such uncon-ventional sacred practices comes at a time when the number of Ameri-cans who identify with one religion is dwindling, while those who consider themselves “spiritual, but not religious” is at an all-time high. According to the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life, the number of adults who say they are not affiliated with any particular faith has grown to 16.1 percent, twice what it was 20 years ago. Among adults under age 30, one-quarter say they are unaffiliated. Mean-while, 92 percent of Americans believe

in God or a “universal spirit,” three-quarters pray and two in five meditate. With the recent publication of such atheist tomes as Richard Dawkins’ The God Delusion, and the meteoric rise of conservative Christian personalities like Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin, those on either end of the spiritual spectrum have taken center stage in an increasingly divisive dialogue in recent years. Meanwhile, former Episcopal priest J. Pittman McGehee points out that the more moderate seekers have been quietly creating a modern-day al-ternative all their own. “There is a 21st -century spirituality out there that is neither fundamentalist nor atheist,” ob-serves Pittman, a University of Houston psychology professor and co-author of The Invisible Church: Finding Spiritual-ity Where You Are. “People are looking for the extraordinary in the ordinary, the miraculous in the mundane, and the sacred camouflaged in the profane.”

God in the WildernessRaised in a devoutly Jewish family and ordained at the prestigious Hebrew Union College, Jamie Korngold was following a fairly typical rabbinical path in the 1990s. She presided over Saturday services at an ornate syna-gogue in Calgary, where she lead a large congregation in songs, chants and readings. Still, she often found herself thinking about the people who weren’t there. “No matter how great my sermons were, I knew I wasn’t going to reach beyond the pulpit,” she recalls, noting that 70 percent of Jews are not affiliated with a traditional congregation. “I needed to meet the people where they are.” Today, she has no synagogue at all. Instead, through her rapidly grow-ing Boulder, Colorado-based Adventure Rabbi program, she leads brief Shab-bat services at a mountaintop warm-ing house at the Copper Mountain ski resort, before spending “a holy day” carving turns on powder-filled slopes with her congregants. For the Jewish New Year, she leads them on a hike to a mountain top, where they unroll a giant Torah and toss snow into a rushing stream to bid farewell to past mistakes and welcome new beginnings. At Passover, they—like their Biblical ancestors—gather in the desert, where she tells the story of the Jewish Exodus from Egypt during their hike to a strik-ing red-rock arch in Moab, Utah. “It was an experience like none that I had ever had,” says Lori Ropa, 45, a lifelong Jew who attended an Adven-ture Rabbi Rosh Hashanah retreat with her husband, a Christian. “The opportu-nity to have a peaceful connection with God and with myself amidst all of that beauty really creates an intense expe-rience for me,” says Ropa, who now attends Korngold’s services regularly. “I go because I want to be there, not because I feel I need to.” Korngold’s God in the Wilderness: Rediscovering the Spirituality of the Great Outdoors, includes a reminder that Moses had to hike across the desert and climb a mountain to receive the Ten Commandments. “The physical ex-ertion of the desert climb, coupled with the stark desert beauty, helped Moses to arrive spiritually and emotionally

in a place beyond internal chatter—a place often called awe,” she writes, suggesting that, regardless of one’s faith, the very act of experiencing awe (for example, over a beautiful sunrise or the life cycle of a tree in the yard) connects us with something bigger. “So, you spend much of your day in a cubicle… Get a spider plant, and watch the miracle of its growth on top of your file cabinet,” Korngold advises. “Change your route to work so that you can drive through a park.”

The Sacred TrackFor 58-year-old Warren Kay, Ph.D., a track coach and religious studies pro-fessor at Merrimack College, in Boston, the act of running represents a move-able sanctuary where mental clutter falls away and time seems to bend to allow him to connect with himself and his higher power. Kay, author of Running: The Sacred Art, believes that, “Running is the new yoga,” and notes that spiritual traditions have embraced running as a sacred vessel for centuries. In the village of Mount Hiei, Japan, members of a small Buddhist sect, known as the Marathon Monks, engage in a grueling, seven-year challenge in which seekers run as many as 50 miles a day in 100-day blocks in pursuit of enlightenment. In Tibet, the Lung-gom-pa runners use multi-day running journeys as their meditative practice. In Copper Canyon, Mexico, 50-mile barefoot races across the rugged desert comprise an integral part of the Tarahumara Indians’ spiritual fabric. For Kay’s sought-after class, The Spirituality of Running, students read scripture from the religious tradition of their choice, and then go for a run, using the time to reflect on what they read. Or, they run first, and then come back to journal their thoughts. Across the country, at the Shamb-hala Mountain Center, in Red Feather Lakes, Colorado, 51-year-old Marty Kibiloski, an Ironman veteran, com-bines Buddhist teachings with trail runs during a three-day running meditation retreat. “What we are trying to show is that you can overlay the practice of meditation onto so many aspects of your life, not just sitting on a cushion,” says

Kibiloski. He once lived what he called, “… a high achievement, low satisfaction life,” as a competitive marathoner, but has evolved a less competitive, more thoughtful pace in both his running and personal life. Whether run-ning for miles or walking from the car to the grocery store, simply focusing on your cadence and your breath and being mindful of where your thoughts take you can illuminate great things, he says. “Once you start really paying attention, you will be amazed at all that you’ve been missing.”

Delicious and DivineL. Shannon Jung, a professor at Saint Paul School of Theology, in Kansas City, Missouri, says he sees the burgeon-ing local food movement and surge in backyard gardening as welcome signs that people are rediscovering the heav-enly roots of Earthly bounty. “We are rediscovering food as a link between us and God,” he says, add-ing that many of his students have gone on to start congregational community gardening programs in churchyards. “When you watch a tiny green bud of spinach break through the surface of the soil, it really reminds you of our depen-dence upon things far beyond us.” Meanwhile, in Liverpool, England, members of the Somewhere Else “bread church” meet twice a week to bake bread and talk about life as they wait for it to rise, the comforting smell filling the kitchen. Half of the bread, the staff of life, feeds the homeless. To McGehee, the mere act of eat-ing can be a reminder of what a divine wonder our own body is, as it stimulates every sense: the smell of an orange, the sound as we bite into it and its texture on our tongue. But when a meal is pre-pared lovingly and shared with a friend, it becomes even more sacred. “If you buy a sandwich at the drive-up, you are

probably just fuel-ing your body,” he comments. “But if you invite someone you care about to sit down with you for a sandwich, it can become a tran-scendent experi-ence.”

Attend to CommunityTaylor, whose acclaimed book, Leaving Church, recounts her part-ing with parish ministry in 1996,

finds that some of her greatest moments of spiritual connectedness now come while digging her hands into the soil to find potatoes, bringing water to her chickens or sowing seeds. But she still believes that the traditional, walled church plays an important role, in that it brings us together physically. “My worry is that in a culture that is individualistic and busy, if we aren’t careful, we might end up alone, with no one to talk to about the things that matter most to us,” says Taylor. She encourages everyone to make time for community—whether it is at church on Sunday, a running group, book club or something else—wherever one’s spiritual life resides. Most importantly, adds Korngold, pay attention to the moment: “The point that is often overlooked in the story of Moses and the burning bush is that he was busy tending his father-in-law’s flock, when he saw a bush out of the corner of his eye that was burning, but not consumed by flame. It was only when he stopped what he was doing, turned aside and paid attention that God spoke to him. “If that were to have happened to-day, Moses’ cell phone probably would have gone off and he may have missed it altogether.”

Extraterrestrial ExplorersSearching for a New Earth“By 2020, or even a little before that,

we’ll know if there are other Earths

out there,” states Laurance Doyle, Ph.D. The astro-physicist is part of the NASA

Kepler spacecraft science team mon-

itoring 170,000 of the brightest stars in our galactic neighbor-hood based on the recent discovery of numerous planets around stars other than the Sun. Launched in 2009, they’re watching for a pattern of three small, annual reductions in brightness that would indicate an Earth-sized planet orbiting another star. “If we don’t find any Earths… then we can say, ‘Wow, Earth is really rare. We need to take care of it,’” says Doyle, who is also a principal investigator at the SETI Institute and president of the nonprofit Planet Quest. If the scientists do find another Earth-like planet, the next step would be to search for signs of biological life by checking to see if free oxygen is present in the atmo-sphere.

Healing crystal practitioners believe that crystals create a change in subtle energies on

the mental, emotional, physical and metaphysical planes that, in turn, effect healing. They may be handled or laid on the body, incorporated into jewelry, contribute to gem elixirs (polished quartz only), and used to complement meditation. Following are 10 of the many stones commonly used for such purposes and some of the reasons why.

Agate Agate, a variety of quartz, comes in several colors. Properties shared by all agate are char-acterized as stimulating the intellect and balancing the intellect and emo-tions. Commonly known types and uses include:• Blue lace agate, to increase effec-

tive communication and treat throat ailments.

• Fire agate, to inspire action and free-dom from inertia.

• Moss agate, to enhance prosperity and self-esteem; elixirs made from this stone are applied to relieve skin problems and eye disorders, and to aid digestion.

Amethyst Amethyst, another variety of quartz, is found in shades of purple,

from light to dark. It has been applied to aid meditation, increase psychic ability and spiritual awareness and relieve headaches. It, too, is consid-ered a help in balancing the emotions and intellect.

Aventurine Aventurine, of a generally pale green color, is often combined with rose quartz, because of both stones’ association with the heart chakra. It is portrayed as protection against negative physical and emo-tional influences on the heart center.

Bloodstone Bloodstone, also called heliotrope, is a form of chalcedony quartz that is green with red specks. It is portrayed as helping to purify the blood and increase strength and vitality. In meditation, it may be considered supportive in opening a communications link with ancestors. Because of its association with blood, it has become a popular stone asso-ciated with healing wounds and for menstrual issues.

healingwaysFULL DISCLOSUREby Adam Graham

When shopping for a healing crys-tal, it’s good to know if it has been altered in any way. Many gemstones are routinely treated to enhance their appearance. So, those inter-ested in their healing properties will want to ask a reputable dealer for full disclosure of the source and treatment of an individual stone. Ask if a stone of interest has been heated, irradiated or otherwise chemically altered. Also inquire about its country of origin and mining and distribution process and conditions. Is there any chance that child labor or onsite chemical toxins were involved? Could the stone have been stolen, or traded on the black market? Members of the nonprofit American Gem Trade Association have signed on to uphold the highest ethical standards in their business practices, including decla-ration of gemstone enhancements; they can be a good place to start. Following are some general guide-lines provided by the association.

• Agate: usually dyed, but natural colors are available

• Carnelian: usually heated and oc-casionally dyed

• Amethyst, aventurine, bloodstone, clear quartz, lapis lazuli, moon-stone, rose quartz, smoky quartz: not typically treated

and red-brown, is intended to stimulate creativity and compas-sion. Because of its as-sociation with the second chakra, it is also used to arouse passion and assist with sexual dysfunction.

Clear Quartz Clear quartz is the name for the variety of silicon dioxide that appears colorless. Appropriately, it may promote the clearing of the aura and physical surroundings of unwanted influences. Because of its amplification properties, clear quartz is often brought into play to enhance the energies of other stones, as well as increase overall positivity. Practi-tioners feel that it can help bring a sense of clarity to any situation.

Lapis Lazuli Lapis is deep blue, with

gold and white specks. In healing, it may assist in releasing deeply buried emotional disturbances,

as well as assist in resolv-ing problems like anxiety

or depression arising from such distur-bances. It is sometimes used as an aid in psychic development, dream recall and astral travel.

Moonstone Moonstone is a form of translucent, white feldspar that may help bring one’s emo-tions under control by facilitating a happy medium between extreme emotionality and repression. It’s said to

enhance intuitive skills and encourage psychic development.

Rose Quartz Rose quartz runs from pinks to whites. Known as a heart or love stone because of its ability to produce a calming, gentle feeling in the aura and atmosphere, it’s often used to heal emotional distur-bances related to relationships.

Smoky Quartz True smoky quartz appears to be transpar-ent, with tones of gray or black throughout, and should not be confused with clear quartz that has been irradiated to create a

darker color. This stone corresponds to the root chakra at the base of the spine and assists one in feeling grounded and able to provide for material needs. It also helps to balance spiritual pursuits with the physical in day-to-day life.

Green GuidesUnited States Updates Rules for Green Marketing

Following three public hearings, a period for

public com-ment on the proposed doc-

ument that ended December 10 and 35 months of development, the U.S. Fed-eral Trade Commission will publish a much anticipated update to its original Green Guides. First published in 1992, the last update appeared in 1998. The guides comprise a common sense set of rules defining required sub-stantiation and disclaimers for the ex-plosion of evolving green claims made by marketers. Like its predecessors, the new edition will represent a helpful, if low, bar, intended to eliminate outright misrepresentations and fabrications. “The new guidelines [still] don’t really keep up with the world of sus-tainable business practices,” comments Joel Makower, executive editor of GreenBiz.com. Rather, they address a fraction of what companies are doing—the behind-the-scenes innovations that reduce use of water, energy and materi-als. While a step in the right direction, they have yet to provide, for example, guidance on reduced packaging or use of the words “sustainable” and “green.” Plus, they don’t yet address the potent eco-claims of cradle-to-cradle, biomim-icry and green chemistry. Makower observes that, instead of “greenwashing,” [making false claims or leveraging words like “natural” to intentionally mislead consumers], most companies today are engaging in ran-dom acts of greenness—tweaks to their products, facilities, policies or practices, rather than undergoing systemic change. While some are seriously changing their ways, for most companies and consum-ers, “going green,” notes Makower, means making a series of incremental changes that over time reduce their worst environmental impacts, while perhaps also garnering some PR points.

So who are we, really? Are we our roles? Are we our thoughts, our emo-tions, our body? If we are aware of the roles, aware of the thoughts and emotions, and aware of the body, then how can that be what we are? Wouldn’t we have to be what is aware of these things? And if we’re aware that we’re aware, wouldn’t we have to be what is aware of the awareness of all of these experiences that make up ‘me’? When we deeply, truly investigate “Who am I?” or “What is here now?” and tell the truth about it, we find that who we think we are is really just a thought. It is possible to discover what that thought is appearing in, and with this comes the end of suffering. The Awareness Process of Self Inquiry is a process of investigation into

Awareness Process

Who are you? Such a simple question.

One that will undoubtedly be answered in

many different ways – mother, father, sister,

brother, teacher, friend, healer, student,

banker, waiter, spiritual being – and the list

goes on. However, these are various roles

that we play, not who we are.

what is actually present and true in ev-ery moment. It is a process of complete surrender to ‘what is,’ and seeing the deeper truth that is at the core of each experience, allowing one to live as the freedom of present moment awareness. Our thoughts tell a story about our experience, about what we think is happening in this moment, and we label the experience as good or bad. Believing those thoughts about our experience creates suffering. We can choose not to believe the thoughts or the labels, and instead investigate into what the experience actually is, and who it is that is experiencing it. Anything can be inquired into – any thought, physical sensation, emotion, or experience. Every moment can be one of self-inquiry.

This is an invitation to try it right now. Bring your awareness into your body. What sensations are you noticing? If you bring your attention into one par-ticular sensation – maybe it’s an ache or a pain – and don’t do anything with it, simply notice it – what is it really? What is it made of? What does it look like? Feel like? What if it isn’t possible to have a thought or tell a story about it? What happens if it is allowed to be exactly as it is, without judging it or trying to change it in any way, without trying to get rid of it, and without trying to hold onto it? What if you can just ‘be’ it – whatever the sensation, thought or emotion? Then there is no problem with the sensation or the thought or emotion. It just is. By simply allowing the sensation or experience to be exactly as it is, it can shift on its own, and what is under it, or before it, can be revealed. If we continue to be present to ‘what is’ in each moment, without mov-ing toward or away from anything, we can discover that who we really are at the core of all of these experiences and sensations and thoughts and feelings is already, and has always been, Perfect Free Awareness.

Kindness is Contagious Pass it OnThe best gift of all can be as simple as an act of kindness,

generosity and cooperation. Even better, we hope that our good acts may spread. Now, a study published in the online edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences provides the first laboratory evidence that kind be-havior is indeed contagious and that it spreads from person to person. In short, the researchers found that when just a few people benefit from kindness, they pay it forward by helping others who were not originally involved. This cascade of coopera-tion can influence many known and unknown participants in a broadening social network. Here’s how researchers at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), and Harvard University illustrated the principle: When one person gave money to help others in a public-goods game where people had the opportunity to cooperate, the recipients were more likely to give away their own money to other people in subsequent games. This type of behavior created a domino effect, in which one person’s generosity spread first to three people, then to nine and then to others in subsequent waves of the experi-ment. Better yet, the effect of being part of such a kindness circle persists, observes James Fowler, associate professor at UCSD, who co-led the study, observing, “You don’t go back to being your old selfish self.”

Long after our soldiers have left the battlefield, the fight contin-ues for many in the form of PTSD

(Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). Endur-ing PTSD while re-adjusting to civilian life can adversely affect mental wellbe-ing, day to day living, employment, re-lationships and may lead to addictions, homelessness, incarceration, abuse and suicide. A 2008 RAND study showed 18.5% of Iraq & Afghanistan vets suffer from PTSD or depression. Fortunately, our military and government are now recognizing PTSD as a lingering scar of war for individu-als and families, and are taking steps to make it easier for those who suffer from PTSD to receive necessary treat-ment without the stigma associated with mental illness. While therapy and medication may be used to address the effects of PTSD, many are turning to an effective, safe, and natural blend of the ancient & modern, in the form of yoga and breath work. Yoga and yogic breathing techniques are accessible to all – with modifications made to honor individual limitations. Yoga soothes the body, calms the mind and quietly energizes – directly addressing the fight or flight response, the core of PTSD. Several public/private programs have been created around the country to enable vets to experience the healing

power of yoga. One of these programs is Yoga Warriors, developed by Lucy Cimini of Central Mass Yoga in West Boylston, MA. At the urging of one of her Vietnam Vet students, Lucy shared yoga with Worcester area vets with initially surprising, amazing results. Through many sessions, tears and triumphs, the Yoga Warriors program developed into a specific methodology uniting breath, movement and affirma-tions into a potent weapon in the battle against the debilitating effects of PTSD on the individual, family and society. Yoga Warriors is a well established and respected program and is actively involved in studying the impact of yoga on PTSD and training yoga teachers how to share yoga with the vet commu-nity. Yoga Warriors now boasts dozens of teachers all over the country. Chris Belanger, RYT, a local Kripa-lu Yoga Teacher, was recently certified to share the Yoga Warriors program with local veterans. In fact, when Belanger expressed his desire to participate in the program, many of his students donated money to cover his Yoga War-riors training and related expenses. Because of their direct experience with the healing power of yoga, they wanted to make yoga more accessible to those they knew could benefit most. As a thank you to those who have served

Solstice Evergreen

For millenia and cross culturally the world over, the turning of the year on the Great Wheel of Life was

marked by the Winter Solstice. Falling on December 21, the Winter Solstice was celebrated as the time of the re-turn of the Light. The shortest day and longest night, it was ritually observed by the lighting of bon fires, feasting and celebration, because from that day forward, human kind was assured that the days would become increasingly longer and, with the warmth of the sun, life would return to the barren snow covered lands. The idea of celebration from Christ-mas through the New Year is not new to modern times. The Romans celebrated with a period of feasting called Saturnalia and Kalendea, while the Greeks celebrated Helia and Basilinda. Whether the celebration occurred in northern lands of Europe or the warmth of the Mediterranean Basin, people honored the shift by gathering greens into their homes and exchanging gifts. Even older customs continued to be celebrated in more isolated places, such as having the men of a village dress in animal hides, masks and horns–a tribute to ancient fertility rites that assured the shift of the seasons.

The plants that are traditionally gathered in homes this time of year also have ancient meaning. Mistletoe, for instance, represents Life in the deepest part of winter. It grew upon the Sacred Oaks in groves, used as ancient “ca-thedrals” or places of worship by Celtic Druidss and Germans. The spines of holly are thought to snare evil spirits, therefore holly was gathered and hung over doorways. Ever-greens represent life in the midst of dark-ness and therefore hope. From Egypt to South America and India to Siberia, folk would gather whatever was green and growing at this special time and decorate their homes with the living green. Nordic regions ritually found and

burned the “yule” log. Ritually brought into the village or home, this master log was burned throughout the season. Its ashes were saved and used to assure fertility and pieces of the log kept to ward off lightning. The word “yule” is con-nected to the old Saxon word for wheel–hweol. It is associat-ed with the lighting of wheels of brush that were rolled down the hillsides during the Solstice. It was a small step to amend ancient ritual beliefs to embrace the new wave of Christianity that emerged through-

out the world. The metaphor of Christ as a return of the Light or enlightenment to the world was easily transposed onto the already occurring ancient beliefs and celebrations. While we can recognize the origins of many of our most cherished holiday traditions imbedded in the historical record of our ancient ancestors, many of us would recognize the expansive icon of Santa Claus as a more modern affectation. Or is it? Most of us know that the idea of Saint Nicholas came to the Americas with Dutch settlers in the 1700s. The Dutch colonists brought their winter celebrations along with the win-ter gnome, who was dressed in animal skins and brought both gifts and punishment in the form of a broom stick. Our modern concept of the “jolly old elf” had a gradual evolution over half a century. The legend of Dutch Santa was introduced by Washington Irving in his Knickerbocker History of New York, and was reinterperted by Clement C. Moore in his poem T’was the Night Before Christmas,” and given form by a Thomas Nast illustration for Harper’s maga-zine. It wasn’t until a 1931 advertising campaign for Coca Cola that artist Haddon Sunblom gave us the image of the jolly, friendly fellow in the red suit. Yet even our modern concept of Santa holds on to his pagan/pre-Christian roots. His “history” is over 4,000 years old so we can but highlight a few of the connections. The ancient diety, Herne/Pan, was represented by sha-mans who led the ancient Winter Solstice rites. Since these rites were associated with fertility, the return of the Sun bring-ing return of life to the land, Herne generally dressed himself in animal skins (usually reindeer or deer), wearing their horns or skull as a type of crown or mask. Herne often scared or threatened the children into good behavior, much like the Dutch companion to Santa, Black Pete. Nowadays, parents use that same threat of putting black coal into the stocking if he or she is “bad.” The Germanic god, Wodan, was honored as the bringer of Light and gifts. If one left a sacrificial harvest treat for his horse, Sleipner, you received gifts in return, which were left in socks, boots or shoes. Shamans often had the ability to transverse the worlds, Heaven and Earth, by utilizing a connector, such as a world tree or pole. Much like our Santa, they could magically fly from one place to the other and access both the sacred and profane, much like Santa gaining access through a chimney. His bag was constantly and magically refilled with gifts that offered food, drink and other presents for the people. Although it is the 21st century, many of us will still be lighting up our homes, gathering evergreens, feasting with friends and waiting for the magical elf to come through our chimneys to leave gifts under the tree. We will shiver with the cold, yet realize the return of the Light, and have hope. On the 21st of December, if you go out to the woods and put a stethoscope against a tree, you can hear the whooshing of the sap as it begins to rise, and you can know, in your deep-est knowing, that the Light will return.

Tap Away Food CravingsDelectable morsels are

traditionally hard to resist, but psychologists from Griffith University’s School of Medicine, in Australia, show us how we can successfully reduce food cravings by using a tech-nique they refer to as psychological acupuncture. It involves gently tapping on pressure points along the body’s energy meridians using the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), while focusing on particular emotions and thoughts. “Participants in the trial were surprised by how quickly the technique works—that it doesn’t take a lot of time to eliminate food cravings they may have had for many years,” notes Peta Stapleton, Ph.D. Food cravings for sweets and salty snacks significantly lessened after just four, two-hour sessions, and were confirmed as being maintained at a six-month follow-up consultation.

Cocoa Takes the Pressure OffFifteen scientific studies attest to the good news: For people with hypertension, eating dark choco-late or cocoa can significantly dilate blood vessels and lower blood pressure. Researchers at-tribute the positive effects to the flavanol compounds in cocoa.

At this year’s 2010 Global Pet Expo, buyers attending the an-nual pet industry gathering were

abuzz about a new exhibit area called Natural Pets. “Natural products are expanding the industry. When you have a new trend for humans, this appeals to the pet industry, as well,” observes Steven King, president of the Pet Industry Distributors Association. Just this year, Americans will have spent an estimated $47 billion on pet products and services, according to the American Pet Products Association. Categories include food, pet supplies, over-the-counter medicines and vet care services and products, many of them incorporating natural materials. The

industry reports that, on average, pet owners annually spend $40 per dog and $19 per cat on toys alone. One more fur-raising fact: Ameri-can Pet Association statistics reveal that of the nation’s 140 million household cats and dogs, 31 million dogs and 39 million cats will have presents waiting for them under the tree on Christmas morning. Also, people will celebrate the birthdays of as many as 13.5 million cats and 9.8 million dogs with parties and pet gifts. What is a politically correct, Earth-conscious shopper to do? We can choose organic and natu-ral products for the same reasons we would go natural in buying decisions for human family members. Concerned

citizens are demanding greater use of nontoxic, pesticide- and chemical-free materials that are better for the health of people, pets and the planet. As Patricia Castaneda, owner of Pet’s Life Naturally, in Palmetto, Florida, advises: “Don’t give anything to your pet that you would not put in the mouth of a small child.” That means no dyes or toys that have small parts to swallow or that are made of toxic materials. Pets can be sensitive to fabrics that come in contact with their skin, just like humans are, creating painful and costly aller-gic reactions. She admonishes, “Your animals count on you to protect them.”

Feline ProwessThe Humane Society of America believes that wise use of toys, combined with regular playtime, contributes to the health and happiness of cats of all ages. Play satisfies their instinctual hunting drive, develops mental and physical agility and provides bonding time with their humans. The society recommends cat toys that offer variety: one to carry, one to wrestle with, one to roll and one to “baby.” What is right for your cat? Pet store professionals know which products cus-tomers purchase and enjoy. As Castane-da remarks, “Cats are so creative and independent they can have fun with ping-pong balls, cardboard toilet paper rolls and plastic shower rings. Just make sure that what they play with cannot be eaten or harm them.” Of course, the whole family can enjoy creating original cat toys using a bit of imagination, along with organic cotton, natural ingredients and a needle and thread. Just follow the same rules of thumb for homemade playthings to keep the animals safe.

Canine WisdomDogs need toys to fight boredom when left alone for any length of time, accord-ing to the Humane Society. They also recommend four types of toys for dogs: at least one to carry, one to shake, one to roll and one to “baby,” for play and to release stress. Many dog toys should be interactive, to increase time with people. By focusing on a specific task—such as repeatedly returning a ball or playing hide-and-seek with treats or toys—dogs can take advantage of the opportunity to

We have good news for anyone in search of a nifty gift for a furry or feathered family member. Whether the occasion is a holiday, birthday or animal appreciation day, there is a “green” pet gift to celebrate it. The mantra of reduce, reuse and recycle is now present in the pet industry, providing many more eco-friendly options.

Savvy Shopper TipsFriendly Brands for Pets, People and

the Planet

Looking for inspiring pet- and Earth-friendly gift ideas? Here is a list of the top six eco-friendly brands recommended by natural pet store owners in an

informal survey. Other local natural pet stores will have additional appealing ideas and products.

WEST PAW DESIGN (WestPawDesign.com) – Look for hang tags that say “I used to be a plastic bottle,” on toys and bedding for cats and dogs. The Bumi boomerang invites pooches to bend and tug. The Hurley encourages an active canine to chew, bounce and float it, and even comes with a replacement guarantee. Cats take to their catnip toy mouse. And, if a pet tires of a West Paw Design toy, their Join the Loop program will recycle returned products into new pet toys.

PLANET DOG (PlanetDog.com) – Planet Dog eco-products range from recycled balls and bones to a Zoom Flyer for throwing and an after-bath towel for canine comfort. The company operates a foundation providing products and funding to worthy causes based on the phi-losophy, “Think Globally and Act Doggedly.”

KONG NATURALS (KongCompany.com) – Their eco-friendly line of cat toys feature straw cones with feathers, crinkle caterpillars and entertaining fantasy animals. Kong also offers cat scratchers made of recycled products, some reversible for longer wear, with feathers attached for play.

THE GOOD DOG COMPANY (TheGoodDogCompa-ny.com) – Innovation here includes two Labrador employ-ees, Howard and Ruby, who “lab” test the company’s hemp toys, collars and leashes. Good Dog claims that its lab-sized hemp biscuits and bungee bone tug toy are good to fetch, catch and carry, and can even improve dental health.

SWEET FEET & BEAK (SweetFeetAndBeak.com) – If a favored pet is feathered, try this bamboo perch, which of-fers the gift of a daily calcium supplement, along with an ongoing pedicure for bird friends.

In the end, it’s all about just doing what comes natu-rally for all of our gift-giving.
