STATESBORO-BULLOCH COUNTY FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY DECEMBER, 2011 Membership dues provide over half of the Friends of the Library’s (FOL) total contribution to the library! YOUR membership is crucial to our continuing success in supporting the library. In addition, we need your help by bringing new members into our organization. Be a good Friend by making another Friend! Extra membership forms are available at the library and online at www.statesborofriends.org. Take a few and encourage others to join us! PLEASE send the form and your dues in promptly to the address on the form. Why not consider increasing your membership contribution this year? Help make 2011-2012 the best year yet! MEMBERSHIP RENEWALS Every Saturday this growing season, the Friends of the Library had a booth at the Mainstreet Farmers Market downtown. And what a great outreach it was! The most popular? We gave a free used book to every child each week. It was such a delight to see children rummaging through our selections to find the perfect one. For some, you could see it was going to become one of a few precious books they could call their own. And for all of them, it was a wonderful invitation to reading. And what could be more important to the long-term health of libraries! It also gave us a chance to talk to parents about the wonderful library programs for children. For adults, we had a miniature Everlasting Book Sale where people could pick up a week’s worth of reading and often sign up (or renew) friends membership. In general, we raised about $50 per week to support the library’s good work. We also brought in local authors to the Market. Loretta Brandon shared her memoir of growing up in a lighthouse: Lightkeeper’s Legacy: A Personal History of Presque Isle. Verdery Kennedy brought her lovely children’s book, The Potato Bug Race. Del Pressley and Marvin Goss editors of Out of the Past: Selected Writings by Maude Brannen Edge, signed their book published by the Bulloch County Historical Society. And Annette Laing presented The Snipesville Chronicle, her time-traveling stories for children. FARMER’S MARKET

Ted Dunagan A Night and An Author for Adults and Children

Thursday, February 9, 2012 7:00 p.m.

Ted Dunagan was named a Georgia Author of the Year in 2009 for his debut novel, A Yellow Watermelon, and again in 2011 for his second book, Secret of the Satilfa. His third novel, Trouble on the Tombigbee, was released in August, 2011. While these books were written for youth, they also speak to adults as well. In the best Southern literary tradition, they explore poverty and racial segregation through the eyes of two twelve-year-old friends. Children should be accompanied by adults, please.

Janisse Ray

Award-Winning Environmental Activist, Writer, and Poet

Annual Meeting Monday, May 21, 2012

Janisse Ray, is the award-winning author of Ecology of a Cracker Childhood, a highly praised book that combines elements of ecology and autobiography. The New York Times, says of Janisse Ray that her “passion for preserving and restoring the unsung landscape is heartfelt and refreshing.” She’ll introduce us to her newest book, Drifting into Darien: A Personal and Natural History of the Altamaha River. It's the true story of what happens to Ray on a week-long trip down the river one spring, a trip she’d dreamed of taking since a girl. However, just before the voyage, a strange and disturbing piece of mail arrives. The river journey becomes a way to accept a world that contains both good and evil. The journey, like the river itself, is transformation.

ALL MEET THE AUTHOR EVENTS ARE HELD IN THE SORRIER ROOM OF THE STATESBORO REGIONAL LIBRARY

Representatives from the Statesboro Bulloch County Friends of the Library met with Statesboro Cracker Barrel representatives to accept a generous donation in the amount of $1,500. Cracker Barrel also donated two of their signature Cracker Barrel rocking chairs that were placed in the atrium. The Friends of the Library used the money to help fund the Library’s Reading is Fundamental (RIF) Program.

Will McIntosh, the award winning sci-fi writer, was the speaker for the Meet the Author event in September. The Sorrier Room was filled to capacity as Mr. McIntosh read from his first novel, Soft Apocalypse, and answered numerous questions from avid readers and potential novelists.

In November, the Friends of the Library had the privilege of hosting a genealogy event that covered both genealogy research and writing family histories. It was led by Janice Strickland, Loretta Brandon, and Sharon Rowe.
