hOW yOU DEFINE WORk PROBABLy DETERmINES hOW yOU APPROACh IT By Rich Shefren
The way you define your work says a lot about your attitude — and it can shape your motivation to succeed.
consider these basic distinctions:
• JustaJob.You’re working for the paycheck and nothing
else. Fine in the short term, especially if you have other goals
in mind, but not usually a viable strategy for lifetime satisfaction.
• career. You’re invested in a particular industry and type of
work. You have goals, and you’re working toward them with
an eye toward finding and giving value to your employer and
your customers — both worthy objectives.
• Passion. You feel a calling for the type of work you do that
doesn’t limit you to a specific organization, or even a particular
industry. Be realistic, but look for opportunities to do work you
feel passionate about. In the long run, that’s the most fulfilling
way to do your job.
kEEP yOUR DESk & yOUR CAREER WELL ORgANIzED FOR SUCCESSA messy desk doesn’t just slow down your ability to find things — it can impede your career development. A survey of HR executives by Office Team found that more than 8 in 10 said an untidy workspace influences their view of that employee’s professionalism. Peter Walsh, of Peter Walsh Design in Sherman Oaks, Calif., says that almost 49 percent of your co-workers wonder about your abilities if you’re not capable of keeping your desk clean.
With that in mind, try these tips for keeping your working area neat and efficient:
• Create“zones.”Don’t just toss documents, books, supplies, etc., across your desk. Designate specific areas for particular items: progress reports in one corner, mail in another, staplers and paperclips in your top drawer, and so forth. This will make finding things quicker and easier.
• Cleanupregularly. Before lunch, and right before you go home, spend a few minutes sorting your desk. File what you need, discard what you don’t, and straighten everything up so it’s waiting in the right location when you return.
• Respondpromptly. Resist the urge to set stuff aside for an indeterminate “later.” Make a point of filing, discarding, or acting on items right away so they don’t pile up and become overwhelming to contemplate.
INCREASE yOUR “TECh” IQKeyboard shortcuts to save you Time
If you are like many people, you probably rely pretty heavily on your mouse for carrying out common functions such as copying and pasting. But if you happen to find yourself working on a laptop where space is restricted and a mouse isn’t a feasible option, keyboard shortcuts can take away much of the hassle and time that typically go into using a touchpad to do the same things.
Here are some of the most commonly used keyboard shortcuts for changing or editing text:
• Toselecttext:shift + arrow left / right
• Toselectanentirepageoftext: shift + page up / page down
• Tocopytext: control (CTRL) + C
• Tocuttext:control (CTRL) + X
• Topastetext: control (CTRL) + V
• Toundoyourlastaction:control (CTRL) + Z
• Tocloseaprogram: ALT + F4 or ALT + F + X
• Toopenthetaskmanager: control (CTRL) + shift + escape (ESC)
• Totabbetweenapplications: ALT + tab key
• Toreturntoyourdesktop: Windows key + M
• Tolockyourworkstation: Windows key + L

IS ThE WORLD mOvINg FASTER? By Tim Murphy
I’m not sure if it is just me, or if things have really changed? Gone are the days when time moved slowly. Itseemslikewehaveenteredintosometypeofnewdimension, wheretheworldspinsfaster. Are we now in “4D?” Compare our lives now to prior decades like the 50’s-90’s. Although we have more time saving devices now than we ever did back then, it really seems as though we have less time.
The same inventions that were created to make life easier and faster have not helped this. Microwaves, emails, faxes, cell phones, movies on demand, Google, and GPS — just few examples of things that should have made us have more time. Instead, there is less time?
Oh,Iknowthereisstill24hoursinthedayanditishowyouchosetousethosehours,butstill,doesn’titseemlikethingsarereallyfasternow?
Could it be that we are now the victims of our own “time saving” devices? With the proliferation of “efficiency,” we now have so many choices at our fingertips that we are trying to fit all of them into the same space. Do we have so many competing products for our time that we now have no time?
I remember an event that happened at a Jason’s Deli one day about 8 years ago. I commented to a friend of mine that it seemed like it was taking a long time to move through the line. A wise old gentlemen in front of me turned and said, “it just takes time,” ”it just takes time.” I instantly agreed and waited patiently for my turn to order.
Ironicisn’tit?
P.S. I would write more, but I am out of time!
INTERESTINg TIDBITSbloodtypes— What Do They Mean?
According to Dr. Peter D’adamo in Eat Right for Your Blood Type, “A” is Agrarian, “O” is for Oldest, “B” is for Balance, and “AB” is for Modern.
What is The Mineral That Most americans are Deficient in?
It’sMagnesium! What does it do for you? Over 300 functions but 2 important ways — Helps your body to create more serotonin and thus feeling more relaxed and in a better mood.
Attracts water to your body and aids in “digestion.” Best taken with calcium. Look for CalMag in the vitamin section.
What did doctors use for depression before Pharmaceuticals solutions such as Prozac?
Tryptophan! That’s right, the same stuff found in turkey meat!
ARE yOU RATIONAL OR EmOTIONAL?We have heard it time and time again, humans are emotional rather than rational. We say that we believe it, but how many of us actually believe that this is true? If we do believe that it is true, then why don’t we use it as a tool in our daily lives?
In a recent study of the NationalBasketballAssociation(NBA) what do you think determined the playing time of new players? Skill, quickness, or toughness? How about rebounds?
What if I told you that this did not matter? That’s right, what if I told you that performance did not matter? Instead, whatifItoldyouthattheorderinwhichaplayerispickedintheNBAdraft, determineshowmuchplayingtimehegets?
According to the authors of “SWAY”— The Irresistible Pull of Irrational Behavior citing a study done by Staw and Hoang, they concluded that the determining factor in playing time was the equivalent of a PE playground method. Thedeterminingfactorastohowmuchtimeaplayergot, wasbasedonhisDraftPick.Yes, you read it correctly. What they found was that “the variable most responsible for an NBA player’s time on the court ‘above and beyond any effects of the players, performance, injury, or trade status’, was his draft selection order.”
“Even after controlling for all other factors in a given season, every increment in the draft # (like getting drafted 9th instead of 8th) decreased playing time by as much as 23 minutes. Incredibly, draft order continued to predict playing time all the way through the players 5th year in the NBA, the final year measured in the study.”
