Tax Time Tips As the end of the year approaches, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all Happy Holidays. I hope that you can have some fun before you have to deal with all of the not-so-fun stuff that is to follow, like taxes. If your Chapter has a year-end date of Dec. 31, you have until May 15 to file form 990-N (e-Postcard) with the IRS. This form must be filed electronically. There is a link on the RSES website that will take you to the 990-N (e-Post- card) filing site. When you log onto the RSES website, you need to click on the My RSES home page line under- neath your name. You then click on the Chapter Officer’s information line that will appear in a listing on the left-hand side. In the tax information section, select the blue link that says “click here,” and you will be connected with the 990-N (e-Postcard) filing site. If a Chapter has paid any individual or non-incorporated entity $600 or more for services during the year-end date of Dec. 31, the Chapter must file Form 1099-MISC and 1096. Form 1099- MISC is a multi-part form that can be purchased at any office supply store. To correctly fill out this form you will need to have the name, address, and tax identification number for the person or entity you paid at least $600 to dur- ing the year. Copy B of this form must be given to the recipient by Jan. 31, Copy A must be filed with the IRS by Feb. 28, and Copy C should be kept by the Chapter. Form 1096 is a summary return and must accompany Copy A of the 1099-MISC to the IRS. In order to fill out this form, you just need the Chapter name, address, tax identifica- tion number and number and type of form you are filing. If you have received a notice from the IRS stating that the Chapter has lost its not-for-profit status, the deadline for getting your Chapter’s tax-exempt sta- tus reinstated by Dec. 31 is rapidly ap- proaching. Headquarters Staff has prepared a package with line-by-line instruction that will assist you in filling out all of the necessary paperwork. If you need a copy of this package, or have questions on how to fill it out, please contact Headquarters today. If you have any questions on this or any other tax or accounting issue, please let me know and I will be happy to help. As the end of the year approaches, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all Happy Holidays. I hope that you can have some fun before you have to deal with all of the not-so-fun stuff that is to follow, like taxes.
