DECEMBER 2012 South Mountain District Newsletter

The BSA has a year round growth plan which is designed to facilitate Scout recruitment and pack-troop relations. The South Mountain District Membership Committee supports the individual units as they implement their yearly growth plan and will offer monthly advice to units in this column to give your unit leaders some ideas and suggestions.

DECEMBER:

Our Contest is Almost Over!

The South Mountain District Membership Committee is wrapping up our first ever TOP GUN recruitment campaign for the district PACKS. It’s not done just yet, so every new scout that joins still earns valuable points for your unit until the end of December. We hope you had as much fun with the program as we did and this helped to energize your recruitment plan. Please visit the South Mountain District Website and click on the Membership Tab for current totals. Below are the point totals by unit logged thus far toward their goal of being awarded the coveted TOP GUN award as the top recruiting PACK for 2012 and a pizza party for their entire PACK. Remember, the program wraps up in December and our District needs scouts so make dash to the finish. Contact Mark Firth, District Membership Chair at [email protected] for details.December - TOP GUN POINT TOTALS BY UNIT:UNIT POINTS UNIT POINTS UNIT POINTS UNIT POINTS199 37 333 34 352 17 1742 9306 16 334 14 359 9311 9 335 2 360 9317 9 343 9 362 2319 14 346 29 364 26321 30 347 21 368 9329 34 349 7 383 0

December:

Having a holiday event? Why not invite families to come out to discover what scouting is all about? Most scouts don’t join because they were never asked. Parents need to know where you are and when you meet.

New Tiger Leader Liaison: The district membership committee welcomed out newest member Matt Woodruff. Matt, a highly experienced den leader has agreed to assist all new tiger leaders as they begin their programs. Matt is available to answer questions, give program advice and assist new parents to deliver the tiger program. Matt can be reached via email at: [email protected].

DECEMBER

Now is the time to invite Webelos scouts to a January troop event. Do you have Eagle Scouts under the age of 18? They are a perfect resource to reach out to the Cub pack and the webelos dens and make a personal invitation to your event or to make a presentation about your troop.

Let us know your successes and your challenges with youth recruitment. The district Membership Committee wants your feedback so please drop us an email with your thoughts to: Mark Firth, SMD Membership Committee Chair at: [email protected]

South Mountain District - Activities Committee Report - 11/13/2012

Cub Fall Event report from Marci Weaver: The Cub Fall Event, “Jungle Fever”, was held Sat. Oct. 20 at the Hellertown Sportsman’s Gun Club. We had 124 Cub Scouts attend the event. Attendance has been increasing over the years. We had 11 units participate in running events (OA, 2 packs and 8 troops). There were some that ran more than one event, and other helpers that ran events. Thanks to Lisa Szydlow for chairing the event. We’ll have a District Cub Scout Activity Badge event Sat. Jan. 12 – if you can help with that event, please contact Marci Weaver at [email protected].

District Cub Scout Pinewood Derby: is Saturday, March 16, 2013, 8:30 am. to 12 noon at the Family Center (gym) at East Hills Moravian Church, Bethlehem, hosted by Pack 364. We need adults to help with registration and other crowd-control. We have a detailed “how-to” written guide on the various tasks, so you don’t have to know anything :-) If you can help us, contact Cubmaster Chris Smith, at [email protected].

Boy Scout Klondike Derby: is Saturday, February 16, 2013, at BSA Camp Minsi, Pocono Summit, hosted by Troop 302. Planning is almost complete under the steady hand of T.302 Scoutmaster Paulo Benatti but we still need adults to help with registration and staff activity stations. We have a detailed “how-to” written guide on the various tasks, so you don’t have to know anything :-) If you can help on Feb. 16, please contact Scoutmaster Paulo Benatti, at [email protected].

Activities Committee: Your Activities Committee [Marci Weaver (Cub events), Chris Smith and Mike Mayrosh (Boy Scout events), and myself need a couple of good men or women to fill-out the committee and help plan District events. Please contact us if you can help.

We also still need units to step up to host the April 13 2013 Boy Scout Compass/Orienteering Event, the 2013 Cub Fall Event and the 2013 Boy Scout Fall Camporee. Will your unit step up to help us?

DECEMBER 2012 South Mountain District NewsletterGENERAL INFORMATION

The District Award of Merit is a council award presented by districts in the same manner that the Silver Beaver is a nationalaward presented by councils.

The award is available to Scouters who render service of an outstanding nature at the district level.

The award is made available annually on the basis of 1 for each 25 traditional units or fraction thereof. The district need not present all the awards to which it is entitled each year.

It is not appropriate to nominate a Scouter who has already received this award.

A professional Scouter or other council employee may not receive this award based on employment service. However, a professional Scouter or employee who also serves as a volunteer Scouter may be eligible, based on volunteer service.

REQUIREMENTS 1. A nominee must be a registered Scouter.2. A nominee must have rendered noteworthy service to youth in Scouting, outside Scouting, or both.

Note: The nature and value of “noteworthy service to youth” may consist of a single plan or decisions that contributed vitally to the lives of large numbers of youth or it may have been given to a small group over an extended period of time.

3. Consideration must be given to the nominee’s Scouting position and the corresponding opportunity to render outstanding service beyond the expectations of that Scouting position.

4. The nominee’s attitude toward and cooperation with the district and/or council is to be taken into consideration. 5. Nominations cannot be considered for posthumous awards.

PROCEDURE

1. Annually, district chairmen will appoint a temporary special District Award of Merit committee of not more than five persons who will consider all candidates and make recommendations of those to receive the award to the council through the Scout executive.

2. The Scout executive will inform the district chairman of those nominations approved by the council committee. 3. The following procedure is suggested for such presentation ceremonies:

a. The recipient and spouse should be in attendance at the annual meeting or recognition dinner. b. A district and/or council officer should explain the award and its significance. c. Eagle Scouts or Silver Award Venturers should be asked to escort the recipients to a place of honor at the head table or on

stage. d. A suitable citation for each recipient should be read indicating what each has done in Scouting. e. The award (certificate, No. 33719; plaque, No. 17565; and lapel pin, No. 17551) may be presented at this time with

appropriate congratulations. f. The only uniform insignia which accompanies this award is an embroidered overhand knot, No. 05013. g. A group picture may be taken for use in neighborhood or community newspapers (district responsibility).

The next step in Leadership Training!

An integral part of BSA’s Youth Leadership Training Continuum, National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) is the next step after Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops/Crews (ILST/C). The Minsi Trails Council will be sponsoring a two Troop course in 2013 to provide additional opportunities for the Scout-masters and Crew Advisors to train your youth leaders. The NYLT course supports Scoutmasters and Crew Advisors in their primary responsibility of training youth leaders. The Minsi Trails Council will offer the two weekend course in April 2013.
