Becky’s Bits and Bytes

The holidays are here and SACG is ready to celebrate. Our annual Pot Luck Dinner will be on December 6. This is always a fun time to meet fellow calligraphers, catch up on the latest happenings, and have a fabulous dinner. The hospitality committee has planned a “sparkly” evening for us. Try to make a card for the exchange. It’s always interesting to see what new ideas our members have and what lovely cards they cre-ate. This is a great opportunity to try out some of the things you learned in our work-shops. Some Roman variations, maybe? The guild has always donated generously to the Battered Women’s Shelter. Bring items which you wish to donate to the December Pot Luck. There is always a need for toiletries, children’s clothing, toys and gift cards. Kimberly Hartzog will see that all items reach the donation center. Kimberly has also arranged for the guild’s purchase of twelve turkeys for the shelter’s food baskets. Thank you all for your generosity and thank you Kimberly for taking time during this busy season to see that others have this bright spot in their lives. I hope you were able to attend the opening of the Fall Exhibit at Crumpets. If not, remember that the show con-tinues until Sunday, January 6. Take a break from your busy holiday schedule and enjoy the calligraphic art and maybe stay for a meal. The quality of the work is always exceptional. Thank you to all who entered pieces in the exhibit and a special thank you to Joanne Pacelli and her committee for the many hours of hard work that have gone into arranging this quality exhibit. We have a new SACG logo! Voting took place at the November meeting and we chose a great graphic design using the SACG letters in the shape of a circle with the guild name lettered across the top half. Check it out! Though we have no minis in November or December, we do have the winter envelope exchange starting in De-cember and extending through February. Sign up with Sylvia Stanley. There is also a spring exchange which takes place from March through May. As you learned at the November meeting, the guild’s library has much to offer. Nicole Lozano took us step-by-step through the library’s online site. This is a very user-friendly listing of all the books and items which are con-tained in the 10 library carts. We do have some treasures! The carts will be available at the January meeting. Thank you Nicole and the library committee for all your hard work. Looking ahead to the new year: The January program will be presented by the Reggie study group. The Early Bird will be a display of decorated letters and the program will be the film The Secret of Kells. Be sure to come for this fun and informative movie night. Mark your calendar for the January 17 mini workshop. The Reggie study group has planned a Round Robin evening of Valentine card making. The January 19 Saturday Special, Walnut Ink - Fun With a Couple of Nuts, will be presented by Lynn Rothe and Lenora Jordan. A great start to the new year!

Flourishes, the monthly publication of the San Antonio Calligraphers’ Guild, is published ten times per year, Septem-

Time is Running out to Sign up for the 2012—2013 Envelope Exchange!

It’s time to sign up for this year’s envelope exchange. Last year was a great hit. There are two exchanges this year:

The Winter 3 x 3 exchange takes place from December through February—for a maximum of 9 envelopes. The deadline to sign up for this exchange is November 22nd.

The Spring 3 x 3 exchange takes place from March through May, 2012—for a maximum of 9 envelopes. The deadline to sign up for this exchange is the February General Meeting.

Note that the actual number of mailings will depend on how many people sign up for each exchange. Sign up will be available at the November meeting. You can also sign up by contacting Sylvia Stanley at 210-545-5515 or [email protected]. Sylvia will have more information to share, so be sure to talk to her to sign up for one or both. There’s no skill level requirement, so use this opportunity to challenge yourself. This is a good chance to practice your lettering and see others’ work! Don’t miss it!

Battered Women's Shelter Holiday Collection

The battered women's shelter helps women and children who have been displaced by family violence. The December 6th General Meeting is when we conduct our annual holiday donations drive for the Battered Women's Shelter Donation Center. Items donated to the Center are distributed to each of the shelters serving our community and to families transitioning out of the shelter. Many clients come to the shelter with very little in hand for themselves or their children and are in need of the basics for daily living...hygiene items and clothing. All donations are welcome, and with the holidays approaching the Donation Center has some under-served needs. At the October 4th General Meeting the Guild voted to purchase 12 turkeys for the Shelter's December Food Baskets, which the shelter delivers to transitioning families. The shelter is in need of a variety of canned goods to accompany the holiday turkeys. There is an ongoing need for socks and underwear for school age children, boys and girls. There is also a need for boy and girl toys, ages 6 to 12. Teenagers generally do better with gift cards to places such as Target, Forever 21, Banana Republic, Gap, Old Navy, etc. A $20 or $25 gift card will get the teenager at least one item. Stores like WalMart, Target, and HEB usually have gift cards available for a variety of locations at prices ranging from $15 to $25. Please bring your donations to December's General Meeting. If you will not be able to attend and would like to donate please contact collection chair, Kimberly Hartzog.

Romans Saturday Special and Kirigami

Accordion Book Mini The second Romans class was a great success. Thanks to our great teachers, Maggie Gillikin, Lynn Rothe, and Leslie Winakur who taught the Romans class, and to Beth Morton who taught the Kirigami class.

Everyone was heads down on their Kirigami accordion books. Lots of folks went home to make more!

Our New Logo

Congratulations to Fay Lee who designed the new SACG logo. The vote was taken at the November meeting and here’s the winner. The new logo will be used on the website and other printed items.

Fall Show Opening

November General Meeting

The fall show opening was a great suc-cess. Here are some pictures of those who attended and some of the art work this talented guild was able to share with San Antonio. A BIG “thank you!” to Jo-anne Pachelli and the rest of the Exhibit Committee for all their hard work!

Everyone had a great time learning about all the library has to offer members of the guild. The guild owns a variety of books that are out of print or hard to get. Be sure to take advantage of this awesome resource!
