W hether it’s the Tory Burch jacket you fell for then seldom wore, or the fabulous

designer handbag that now you want to upgrade, your once-loved treasures can be a true joy to someone else. And just think of all the kids’ clothing that your kids outgrow! That’s what consignment shops do – they connect your underloved items with new owners who will adore them!

Two Great Reasons to Consign:It’s Good For You, and

It’s Good for the Environment

C onsigning keeps your closets filled with only the things you actually love and

use. It simplifies your life and saves you time otherwise spent maintaining under-appreciated possessions. Best of all, it turns cluttered closets into cash!

And, the best part of resale is replacing! It’s nice to clean out our closets but filling them back up with things you love is even more exciting!

According to the American Cancer Society, the early detection of breast cancer saves

thousands of lives each year. One of the newest tools in this effort is 3-D mammography,

or tomosynthesis, which is now available at St. Luke’s Sugar Land Hospital.

3-D mammograms allow physicians to take images from

different angles, providing sharper, better quality

results and a reduction in “false positives.” The new technology is

recommended for women with dense breast tissue and allows

physicians to view images with pinpoint accuracy in order to

detect smaller tumors earlier.

See if a mammogram is the answer for you.

Dear Fort Bend Friends,

Our halls are decked, our tree is trimmed – we are ready for the holidays at Fort Bend Focus! I can’t quite believe it’s already the end of 2013. The year has flown by at Fort Bend Focus, so we thought what better way to end the year than with a readers’ choice poll highlighting Focus Favs. We asked our readers what their Fort Bend Favs were in food, shopping and entertainment, and the winners are featured starting on page 17. Take a look, and see if your favorite made the cut, and be sure to vote in our 2014 poll this fall!

This year was all about milestones at absolutely! focus media. We now have four community magazines, and we celebrated our 100th issue of Fort Bend Focus in February with an amazing event with our readers and advertisers at the Houston Museum of Natural Science in Sugar Land. We celebrated the first birthday of our newest magazine, absolutely! Brazos, serving West Fort Bend. We launched the GEMS of Fort Bend and provided nearly $15,000 to a worthy community organiza-tion: AccessHealth. Yes, it’s been a great year at absolutely! focus media, and we owe it all to you – our readers and advertisers. Thank you for helping us continue to bring the people, places and happenings of Fort Bend to your doorstep each month. Our readers and advertisers are definitely our Focus Favs!

The holidays are a time for sharing with family and friends, and in this issue, we bring you a great idea to do just that: an old-fashioned cookie swap. A friend of mine hosts a holiday cookie swap each year, and while I honestly do not relish the idea of baking 10 dozen of anything, I always enjoy getting to sample – and take home – delicious cookies that others have made. Check out page 66. Maybe this is the year to start your own tradition with a cookie swap!

As our days get busier and the hustle and bustle of the season is upon us, I hope you will take a moment to remember the reason for the season. “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” – Luke 2:11

From our family to yours, we wish you a blessed and Merry Christmas filled with faith, family and friends.

Stay focused,

Patti [email protected]

U nderstanding the tax basis of investments and the tax rules regarding capital losses can help you re-duce your income and taxes. You can do this by gen-

erating losses to offset income or gains and by generating income or gains to utilize unused losses. You usually don’t have a gain or loss for tax purposes until you sell an invest-ment. Therefore, you have a certain amount of control over the taxation of capital gain income.

Put very simply, the sale of investments and investment property generates a capital loss when the asset is sold for less than your adjusted basis in it. (Although there are ex-ceptions, adjusted basis generally refers to your cost, plus or minus certain adjustments.)

Let’s assume Hal purchases 10 shares of ABC stock in year one for $10,000. By year five, the fair market value of the stock has dropped to $8,000. Because Hal needs cash, he sells the stock in year five for $8,000. He has a capital loss of $2,000 ($8,000 sale price minus $10,000 basis).

With one exception, capital losses can be used only to re-duce or offset capital gains tax. Capital losses must be net-ted against capital gains according to specific ordering rules. Excess losses can then offset up to $3,000 of ordinary income per year ($1,500 if you are married and file separately), as-suming your taxable income is at least as much as the deduc-tion. Losses remaining after the limit may be carried forward indefinitely to offset future income.

Assume you had $5,000 in capital gains this year, but your capital losses amounted to $12,000. You could apply $5,000 in losses to offset all of your capital gains. You could also ap-ply $3,000 against your ordinary income, thereby reducing it. The remaining $4,000 in losses could be carried forward to next year.

Planning your year-end investment decisions with an eye to taking advantage of capital losses is important. If you ex-pect to recognize a capital gain this year, you should review your investment portfolio for possible capital losses to offset it. If you have any capital losses that can be carried forward to next year, you should review your portfolio for capital gain opportunities to make use of the capital losses.

Worried you’re not making the most of your capital losses? Call us today at 713-853-0879. Let us take a closer look at your portfolio to see if we can find the silver lining for you.

The event provided AccessHealth with a total contribu-tion of $14,825 from casino chip sales, a wine basket auction prepared by the JEWELS of Fort Bend and additional event donations.

“Supporting important community organizations such as AccessHealth is part of our mission of being commu-nity focused,” said Lisa Fredrickson, executive publisher of absolutely! focus media. “Through two of our commu-nity magazines, Fort Bend Focus and absolutely! Brazos, we were thrilled to

be able to host the GEMS of Fort Bend and provide much needed support to AccessHealth so that they can continue to serve the healthcare needs of our friends and neighbors.”

The first GEMS of Fort Bend hon-ored three stellar examples of commu-nity service: Joe M. Gurecky, Carl P. Favre and S. Scott West. “Giving back to our community is so important,” said former Rosenberg Mayor Gurecky. “Community service is how we both maintain and grow our community for future generations. The well-being of our community is in our hands, and we must serve as good stewards and good examples.”

The check was presented to Ac-cessHealth CEO Carol Edwards. “We are very honored and excited to have been chosen as the beneficiary of this wonderful event,” said Edwards. “These funds will certainly help us

Fort Bend residents made up a large part of the 7,000 participants that demonstrated their commitment to end global poverty in the annual Partnership Walk on

Saturday, November 2nd. This year, the Partnership Walk was held at Sam Houston Park, and Sugar Land Council-woman Amy Mitchell partnered with Channel 13’s Sharron Melton to emcee the event.

The Partnership Walk is an initiative of Aga Khan Foun-dation USA (AKF USA) to raise awareness and funds that reduce poverty, hunger, illiteracy and poor health in Africa and Asia.

The November event raised over $1.4 million for AKF USA programs worldwide. One of the most admirable quali-ties of the Walk is that 100% of the funds raised go directly to projects supported by the Foundation, and not a cent is spent on administration.

Special guests and keynote speakers included the Hon-orable Annise Parker, Mayor of Houston; First Lady Kathy Hubbard; the Honorable Marty McVey, Member of the U.S. Agency for International Devel-opment’s Board for International Food and Agricultural Develop-ment and President of McVey & Co. Investments, LLC; Sujiro Seam, Consul General of France; Dr. William Flores, President, University of Houston-Down-town; Dr. Noel Bezette-Flores, Co-Chair, Citizenship Month Houston; Claudia Ortega Hogue, Co-Chair, Citizenship Month Houston; Terence O’Neill, May-or’s Office of International Com-munities and Sugar Land Coun-cilman Harish Jajoo.

The Partnership Walk was an all-day event of fun for the entire family including fun runs, lively

entertainment, dances and cuisine all celebrating a rich di-versity of cultures. One of the most inspiring features of the Partnership Walk was the Village in Action, where attendees enjoyed interactive exhibits spotlighting the Foundation’s practical solutions for alleviating poverty in various coun-tries. The festivities began with The National Anthem, sung by Sugar Land’s Chloe Choudhury.

Partnership Walk events were held in 10 major U.S. cit-ies this year. Since 1995, Partnerships In Action activities, including the annual Partnership Walk and golf events, have attracted over 410,000 participants and raised $54 million for poverty alleviation projects supported by AKF USA. Par-ticipants help communities in some of the poorest areas of Africa and Asia to create long-term, self-help solutions to lift themselves out of poverty. These contributions make a tre-mendous impact in creating opportunities for farmers in Mali to feed their families, mothers in India to lead healthy lives, and girls in many countries in Africa and Asia to go to school.

AKF USA, established in 1981, is part of the Aga Khan Development Network (www.akdn.org), a private, non-denom-inational, not-for-profit interna-tional, development organiza-tion committed to alleviating poverty, hunger, illiteracy and poor health. AKF USA works to address the root causes of pov-erty by supporting and sharing innovative solutions in the areas of health, education, rural devel-opment, civil society and the en-vironment. The Network’s agen-cies work for the common good of all citizens, regardless of their gender, origin or religion, and its underlying impulse is the ethic of compassion for the vulnerable in society.

Sugar Land Council Member Harish Jajoo, Ashraf Ramji, University of Houston Downtown President William Flores, Dr. Suleman Lalani, Sugar Land Council Member Amy Mitchell, Houston Mayor Annise Parker, First Lady Kathy Hubbard, Marty McVey and Channel 13’s Sharron Melton kicked off the Partnership Walk.

Sugar Grove Christian School (SGCS) laced up for its 5th Annual 5k and 1Mile Run/Walk on Saturday, October 26th. More than 300 runners and walkers turned out at beautiful Meadows Place Park in support of the school’s annual event. Proceeds from the Run/Walk helped to finance the brand new gymna-sium and classroom additions built this past spring. This expansion furthered the school’s goal to nurture the “whole” student – mind, spirit and body.

Meadows Place Mayor Charles Jes-sup, who served once again as the of-ficial starter for the race, said, “I just love this event. It gives us an opportunity to showcase our city. We feel so blessed to be able to partner with Sugar Grove Christian School to hold this magnificent event in Meadows Place. Good people doing good things is great for our city.”

Sugar Grove Christian School is a ful-ly-accredited, non-profit school provid-ing academic excellence in a Christian environment to students in preschool through 6th grade. Established in 1969, the school is conveniently located one block off of Hwy 59 and West Airport Blvd. in Meadows Place, Texas.

FOCUS CARESBy Whitney Vige

To Stephanie Martin, her reason for volun-teering with Parks Youth Ranch, an organization which provides shelter, counseling and services to homeless and at-risk youth in Fort Bend County, has always been clear: to be the voice of children who can’t speak for themselves.

“I’ve always had a passion for kids,” said Mar-tin, who previously volunteered with Child Advo-cates of Fort Bend. “Unfortunately, children are not able to advocate on their own behalf. It often takes someone to listen to them and advocate for them. That’s always been my goal: to advocate for children who aren’t able to advocate for themselves.”

For Martin, who said her involvement in volunteer work started at “a very young age,” volunteering with Parks Youth Ranch was a “natural progression.” She joined the Fort Bend Junior League in 2007 and after circulating around a number of different organizations, which the League sup-ports, discovered Parks Youth Ranch. “I had been a child ad-vocate volunteer,” said Martin. “I advocated for children in foster homes, for children who came from bad situations. It was just an easy progression volunteering with Parks Youth Ranch. It made sense to do both.”

Martin currently volunteers at the organization on an “as needed” basis, giving “as much or as little time” needed. Al-though she noted that there’s never a “typical day” for a vol-unteer, duties may include administrative work or working

on fundraising events. The ranch, which split into two service facilities, one which offers counseling services to both youth and their families, and one which provides 90-day emergency shelter for ado-lescents between ages 13 and 17, also has volun-teers who mentor and teach the children, and who work with the community. “The volunteer oppor-tunities are endless,” said Martin. “Whether you have a little time to give or a lot of time. Whether you have a special skill to teach or just have love in your heart.”

Ultimately, Martin said she hopes her time with the or-ganization will “somehow impact” the lives of the children who come through the ranch. “Often, these children come in to a situation that is beyond their control: maybe their mom has kicked them out, or they’ve come from an abusive situation and have no other place to go,” she said. “These children fall through the cracks of the system. They have no one to advocate for them, to care for them. It’s always been a passion of mine to find people who are in that situation, who fall through the cracks, and advocate for them, and lift them up in the system so they’re able to fix themselves.”

For more information regarding Parks Youth Ranch, call 281-392-5794 or visit www.parksyouthranch.org. For ad-ditional volunteer opportunities in Fort Bend County, call Volunteer 713-965-0031 or visit www.VolunteerFortBend.org.

absolute ly!AUTO REVIEW

By Steve Kursar

T he 2014 Volkswagen Beetle TDI is a thoroughly modern vehicle that holds a strong re-

semblance to the car that first hit the road back in 1938. The “Bug” was in-stantly recognizable, and it went on to become hugely popular worldwide. But, although times caught up to the original rear-engine, air-cooled model, the iconic shape continues to live on in a new version that is loads of fun to drive.

This Beetle is actually the third gen-eration of the car. In 1997, VW intro-duced the second generation on the vehicle which they called the New Beetle. Its exterior design was very round and curvy and easy to love. Un-like the original; however, this one had

VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE TDIa front engine with the truck in the rear. It was highly popular with wom-en and even boasted a small plastic flower vase on the dashboard.

The newest generation Beetle is decidedly more masculine in its exte-rior design with a lower, wider stance and sharper angles to the sheet met-al. It also drives much more like a sports car, which makes sense since it shares a platform with the Audi TT. The interior is remarkable roomy in the front row so don’t expect the rear passengers to be happy on a long road trip.

The base Beetle, with a MSRP of $19,995, is powered by a 170 hp, 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine that gets estimated EPA fuel economy of 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. The R-Line Beetle will cost you about $5,000 more and comes with a 200 hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 22 mpg city and 30 mpg highway. Both are available with either manual or automatic transmissions.

2014But the real star of the Beetle lineup

is the clean-diesel 140 hp, 2.0-liter tur-bodiesel TDI with an MSRP of $24,195. If you still think of diesel engines as loud and smelly, you need to test drive a modern diesel. It’s remarkably quiet and refreshingly peppy. And, with fuel economy numbers of 29 mpg in the city and 39 mpg on the highway, you can go two weeks without filling up. You can easily drive the roundtrip from Houston to Dallas on one tank of fuel.

If you’re shopping for a fun vehicle that will turn heads but not break your budget, the 2014 VW Beetle should be on your list of vehicles to test drive.

P arents have several choices when it comes to the education of their

children. Those who visit the Inter-national Preparatory School (IPS) are looking for something very specific. They are searching for a fresh philoso-phy and a renewed energy in teaching. Smaller class sizes rank as the number one concern. Why? Because this pro-vides individual attention for students who require more support in some ar-eas while addressing the needs of the gifted child. This all translates into a school where both the teachers and ad-ministration set common expectations in an open, interactive, understanding and energizing manner.

Parents want a safe environment that maintains a high standard of dis-cipline and respect, one that fosters a strong sense of community through school-wide activities, for all ages. Em-phasis on a well-rounded education makes participation in extracurricular activities such as music and art, an in-tegral part of the everyday curriculum. Studies demonstrate that healthy com-petition, such as math or chess clubs, lead to a higher motivation for learn-ing.

Going to school should be an ad-venture. That adventure begins at age three at IPA with a creative learning environment, which continues through elementary and middle school. The curriculum emphasizes a balanced ap-proach in all academic areas while de-veloping a strong social, physical and moral aptitude.

Join the IPS staff for the 2013 - 2014 school year Open House on January 23, 2013 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Guests will have the opportunity to take a guided tour, meet with the faculty and preview the curriculum. IPA is located at 1717 Dulles Avenue in Missouri City. F ort Bend Academy of Dance (FBAD) has focused on the needs and dreams of aspiring young dancers since 1999. Directed by Michael Banigan and Dianne

Jarrell, the emphasis of FBAD is on dance as a performing art rather than a com-petitive event. The school strongly believes in an avenue for personal expression and an opportunity to fulfill professional aspirations. Many students at FBAD are currently pursuing professional careers or degrees in dance.

The Academy utilizes an age and level based curriculum that emphasizes the proper technique of classical ballet as the basis for all other dance forms. They offer classes in classical ballet, pointe, jazz, contemporary and tap. There are also four divisions in the Academy from pre-school through pre-professional.

FBAD is also the home of BalletForte, the premier pre-professional ballet com-pany in the area. BalletForte is a member of Regional Dance America/Southwest and has been entertaining audiences with its annual production of The Nutcracker for the past 16 years.

FBAD provides an encouraging environment where every student is expected to strive for excellence to the best of their ability while experiencing the pure joy of movement. In turn, they are committed to making a positive contribution to the lives of their students and community. This is achieved by giving students the individualized guidance and attention that they are entitled to while instilling the value of commitment, respect, hard work, discipline and artistry.

Memorial Hermann Health Sys-tem recently announced a $93 million expansion and upgrade of its Memorial Hermann Sugar Land hospital into the area’s most advanced facility.

The expansion to Memorial Hermann Sugar Land hospital is designed to sig-nificantly enhance the patient experi-ence and meet the healthcare needs in the rapidly growing Fort Bend County region. Through this expansion, Memo-rial Hermann will continue to provide high quality, safe and nationally rec-ognized patient care to families in the Sugar Land community as it has done for nearly a decade. When complete, the expansion will include a new six-story, 120,000-square-foot patient tow-er that will increase the hospital’s total bed count to 141, as well as an addition-al professional building, new equipment and related facilities.

“One of our highest priorities is to pre-pare for the growing market in Fort Bend County,” said Dan Wolterman, President and CEO of Memorial Hermann Health System. “As the Houston region’s only full service health system, Memorial Hermann is focused on providing out-standing care to people throughout Southeast Texas as we have done for more than 100 years.”

Phase one of the project will see eight new beds added to the Emergency Cen-ter, increasing the total to 26, and the building of a new surgical suite with full digital integration affording surgeons ac-cess to patients’ records and imaging studies within the operating room. Shell space will also be added to accommo-date future surgical suites. A new MRI and an advanced CT scanner will tech-nologically upgrade the hospital’s imag-ing capabilities. Phase one is expected

“Sugar Land and the surrounding area continue to grow and it is our re-sponsibility to respond to that growth not only with upgraded and expanded facilities, but also with new technology and a higher level of services,” said Greg Haralson, CEO of Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital.

Phase two of the project, expected to break ground in November 2014, will add a second professional office building. The new structure will provide 100,000 square feet of combined physi-cian offices, expanded sports medicine and rehabilitation services, along with outpatient imaging. Construction on the patient tower will begin in the fall 2014, marking phase three of the expansion. When completed, the intensive care unit bed count will increase to 14, and 16 new beds will be added to the intermedi-ate care unit. Including shell and expan-sion capability, the tower will ultimately house 210 beds.

This is the first major development project undertaken at Memorial Hermann Sugar Land since its opening in 2006. In addition to facility expansion projects, Memorial Hermann continues to expand its services and medical specialties on campus and beyond. The expansion plans for Memorial Hermann Sugar Land hospital comes on the heels of major growth initiatives at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands, Memorial Hermann Katy, Memorial Hermann Northwest hos-pitals, and development of a medical campus in Pearland that will feature a Convenient Care Center, a 64-bed hos-pital and medical office buildings.

Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hos-pital is embarking on a major expan-sion that will add a new six-story patient tower and include its first development in Missouri City. Five major projects, with a total cost of more than $131 million, are planned for groundbreaking between now and summer 2014 that will expand the hospital’s physical footprint, signifi-cantly enhance its ability to serve pa-tients across Fort Bend and surrounding counties and add a number of new jobs.

“We are investing in Houston Meth-odist Sugar Land Hospital because Fort Bend continues to grow in size and population and our patients are seek-ing an ever broader range of sophisti-cated medical and surgical treatments close to home,” said Houston Method-ist CEO Marc L. Boom, M.D. “Since its inception, Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital has achieved a significant number of medical ‘firsts’ for Fort Bend County, and we want to ensure that our outstanding physicians and staff have the facilities they need to continue that level of quality care.”

Houston Methodist Sugar Land HospitalPlans Major Expansion

Emergency Care Center The expansion effort kicks off in

November with groundbreaking on a new 9,600-square-foot emergency care center on Highway 6 in Missouri City, between the Sienna Plantation and Riverstone communities. The facility is scheduled to open in summer 2014, and will house 10 treatment rooms and the latest technology in diagnostic imaging equipment.

“This is an exciting development be-cause it gives us a physical presence in the heart of the fast-growing Missouri City community,” said Houston Meth-odist Sugar Land Hospital CEO Chris Siebenaler. “The new emergency care center will give Missouri City residents a first-class medical facility within minutes of their homes.”

The new Emergency Care Center on Highway 6 in Missouri City, between the Sienna Plantation and Riverstone communities, will open in 2014.

The new patient tower will be located between the Sweetwater Pavilion and Main Pavilion on the Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital campus.

Patient TowerThe new patient tower will be added

between the Sweetwater Pavilion and Main Pavilion on the Houston Method-ist Sugar Land Hospital campus, and will add 104 beds, bringing the hospital’s to-tal to 339 beds. The tower will add much needed capacity in the form of intensive care beds and medical/surgical beds, with space remaining for future expan-sion. Groundbreaking will take place in the summer of 2014; the tower should open to patients in the first quarter of 2016.

Orthopedics & Sports MedicineThe hospital is also building a new

facility on campus for Houston Method-ist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine phy-sicians. Currently located at Highway 6 and Brooks Street, the practice will move to a new 60,000-square-foot building lo-cated on the corner of Highway 59 and Sweetwater Boulevard. The facility will include space for physical therapy, oc-cupational therapy, speech therapy, aquatic therapy, cardiac rehabilitation, expanded physician clinic space, an out-side training facility for athletes recover-ing from injury and an employee gym. The Spine Center will also be relocated

from the Main Pavilion to a larger space in this new building. Groundbreaking will take place in the second quarter of 2014; completion is expected in the first quar-ter of 2015.

Cath Lab/Heart Center“Houston Methodist Sugar Land

Hospital has been a consistent leader in bringing the most sophisticated and complex cardiac care services to Fort Bend, and our physicians are now regu-larly performing a number of procedures that simply weren’t possible outside of the medical center just a few years ago,” said Siebenaler. “The expansion and re-location of our Heart Center and Cath Labs will make it possible for us to pro-vide an even higher level of cardiac care in the years to come.”

The hospital is building a new Cath Lab/Heart Center that will relocate closer to the emergency room to en-sure the utmost speed in caring for pa-tients suffering from heart attacks. The 20,000-square-foot Cath Lab/Heart Center will include four state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization suites, including two electrophysiology labs. The Heart Center will also offer nuclear, echocar-diogram and stress testing on an out-patient basis. Groundbreaking is sched-uled for summer 2014 with the facility’s opening planned for the fourth quarter of 2015.

Birthing Center The hospital is currently renovat-

ing and updating its Birthing Center and will add additional capacity in the Sweetwater Pavilion when the Cath Lab moves into its new facility.

“We are thrilled to move forward with all of these plans and begin shaping the next generation of patient care facili-ties in Fort Bend,” said Siebenaler. “But one thing will not change, and that is our commitment to providing excellent, compassionate and personal care to our patients and families. That will always remain the foundation of our efforts at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, even as we continue to expand.”

A Christmas Cookie Swap

If you are unfamiliar with the idea of a cookie swap, it goes a little like this: Invite a group of friends and neighbors who bake to come to your home. Have each one bring 10 to 12 dozen home-made cookies. Bake up a big batch of your family’s favorite holiday treats, and exchange baked goods together in a cheery, festive environment. Everyone leaves with a variety of goodies to stash away for Christmas entertaining – and perhaps a new recipe or two.

Mark the beginning of the holiday season by bringing your friends together for cocktails, conversation and a cookie swap. Hosting the party is a great way to slow down, spend valuable time with friends and enjoy the blessing of friend-ship.

M y favorite part of Christmas is the food. December is full of baking, cooking, party

planning, shopping, decorating and fun crafts, which all revolve around food. My favorite gift to give is home-baked goods, made with love, care and a de-lightful heart right from my kitchen. It seems with each passing year, it is harder to find the time to bake all of the delights I would like. In fact, if you received a gift from me last year, it was a jar of muffin mix, prepared in my kitchen, but jarred and unbaked.

I love getting in the kitchen and baking; it’s a family tradition with my girls that I look forward to each year. Their favorites are the gingerbread cookies that they decorate. They also appreciate all the “fancy” cookies that come out of the oven as well. With fam-ily schedules running from morning to evening, it is a challenge to get it done in a festive manner without rushing or grumbling about time.

I love searching out new recipes, and I am coveting some of my friend’s and neighbor’s recipes. In an effort to have a house full of baked goods, the aroma of cinnamon and vanilla wafting through my halls, and lots of happi-ness, I think it’s time to think about a cookie swap. This way, I can spend an afternoon in my kitchen with the girls creating beautiful, delicious treats and be able to have a pantry full of cook-ies for guests, events and my family throughout the entire season.

Recipe from Amy’s Finer Things: http://amysfinerthings.com/reeses-peanut-butter-cup-cookies

absolutely!DELICIOUS

By Stephenie Cox

Benefits of an old-fashioned cookie swap:• Save valuable time during the bus-

iest season of the year. It is much faster to make multiple batches of the same cookie than to purchase ingredi-ents for seven or eight different reci-pes, and prepare each one.

• Provide a wonderful selection of homemade baked goods to serve your guests over the holidays.

• Introduce new types of cookies to your palate and unique recipes to your rep-ertoire.

• Provide a fun, casual social event that is easy to host – the guests bring the goodies!

• Offer an opportunity for a charitable outreach. Guests can be asked to bring non-perishable food items to donate to a local food bank.

No holiday cookie plate would be complete without my favorite cookie:

If you don’t know a person’s preference, is it bet-ter to give red or white wine?Chuck Jenkins: If I have no idea, and the wine is not go-ing to be paired with a food item, I always go with bubbles. You really can't go wrong with bubbles!Amy Gross: When you have no idea of a person's prefer-ence in wines, consider giving sparkling wine or Champagne. Two sparkling wines I especially like to give are J Cuvee 20 Brut from Sonoma County and G.H Mumm Cordon Rouge Champagne.

Do you have any specific white wines you recom-mend for gifts?

CJ: A California Chardonnay for around $15 and $30 should both be welcome. Ask someone at your wine

shop what they've had lately for "unique" selections.

AG: Naia Verdejo, a crisp wine with a nice, long finish that sells for about $15. GreyWacke Sauvignon

Blanc from New Zealand sells for about $15, and Laurenz V Singing Gruner Veltliner sells for about $14.

Do you have any specific reds you recommend for gifts?

CJ: I'd go with a nice Pinot Noir from Sonoma for under $20, and perhaps a Pinot from Oregon for

something over $20. Your wine shop staff is your ally here. Don't be afraid to ask for suggestions!

AG: Rodney Strong's Symmetry. It's a Meritage or Bordeaux-style blend that I enjoy both with food

and without. The price is about $50. Etude Pinot Noir is full-bodied, but not too full, and sells for about $45.

What is your opinion of the screw cap versus the traditional cork? Is it okay to give a bottle of wine with a screw cap?

CJ: Screw caps are our friend! There is zero percent chance the wine can be spoiled by a bad cork if a

screw cap is used. Bring 'em on!

AG: It's definitely okay to give a wine with a screw cap! There are some fantastic wines

which use other closures than corks, and a screw cap is not any indication of lesser quality.

How do you feel about wine of the month clubs?

CJ: Clubs from wineries can be a fun activ-ity, but I'm wary of clubs that send you

unfamiliar wines. However, you can generally can-cel a club membership any time if you're not hap-py with the selections, so it's worth a try if you want an easy way to expand your wine knowledge.

AG: Wine of the month clubs can offer vari-

ety and help to explore new wines, bringing fantastic new options to your door, but they can also bring wine you may not enjoy. I am a mem-ber of one, but I also don't mind trying a few wines that won't be my favorites.

HOT SHOTHigh School

Madison Richards: Frame by Frame

Madison Richards is a se-nior at Fort Bend Chris-tian Academy (FBCA). As

a senior, her schedule is non-stop with school activities, extracurricu-lar sports, photography sessions and volunteer activities. Madison is an ac-tive and joyful teenager who has been faced with tough situations and still manages to see the glass as half-full behind the lens of her camera.

As an optimist, Madison always sees the best of any situation, which has made her a natural photographer. Madison began learning about the art of photography when she was in mid-dle school from her aunt. Thus far, Madison has taken senior pictures, birthday party photos, engagement pictures and has even been a wedding photographer. “I like photography because it allows me to convey differ-ent messages and tell a story through photos,” said Madison. “I hope to do photography for a long time.”

Currently, Madison is on the year-book staff and in the Photography 1 class to learn more about the art. Madison is the Editor of the yearbook and served as the Photo Editor last year. In her photography class, Madi-son has completed different projects such as working to illustrate adjec-tives through photographs. In the future, she would like to be a photo-journalist to continue to develop her knowledge and skills of the art of photography. Madison is looking to attend the University of Texas next fall to begin her studies in photojour-nalism.

In high school, Madison is a “Dis-tinguished Scholar” and an honor roll

By Lauren Dante Benoit

student. Her favorite class in high school has been her Moral View and Ethics Bi-ble class. In this class, she has learned about her beliefs as a Christian and how to support them. As a participant in the Student Leadership University, Madi-son attended conferences in San Anto-nio and Washington D.C. on how to be a Christian leader and apply her beliefs in real-world settings.

Madison continues to build her faith foundation through her service and vol-unteer activities as well. She has trav-eled from New York to Guatemala on mission trips. “As the first mission trip that I have been on, I loved my trip to Guatemala,” said Madison. “The trip changed my outlook on life and was very eye-opening.” While in New York, Madi-son and her classmates assisted the resi-dents of New York in cleaning up after Hurricane Sandy. The trip to New York was memorable for Madison because she bonded with many of her classmates on this trip while having fun and helping others.

Madison continues to bond with her peers while at school as Captain of the volleyball and tennis team. Madison has been a three-year Captain of the volley-

ball team and two-year Captain of the tennis team. In volleyball, Madison is the outside hitter and serves as the power hitter for the team. The varsity team has gone through some transi-tions the past few years, but Madison finally feels like the team has gelled as they reached their goal of making it to the state championship this year. “No matter how bad we are losing, we can still fight through,” said Madison. “We know that we can always lean on each other as teammates.”

Her teamwork skills in volleyball have made Madison and her doubles tennis partner unstoppable on the ten-nis court. The girls went to state last year and are looking to return again this year for the top prize.

Between athletics, school and vol-unteer activities, Madison keeps busy; however, she always keeps things in perspective. After Madison’s diagno-sis of melanoma on her leg this past summer, she was quickly able to see that having one’s health is something that shouldn’t be taken for granted. Regardless of your age, if you are not in good health, life can be extremely challenging. Madison was able to un-dergo surgery and the cancerous spot was removed. Throughout the process, Madison remained calm, hopeful and steadfast as she waited patiently for her doctor to give her the okay to re-turn to volleyball and tennis.

As she continues to view her glass as more than half-full, Madison is per-fecting her photography skills and is a leader both inside and outside the classroom at FBCA. We are so proud of you Madison and everything that you have accomplished!

Living the Sweet Life:By Alisa Murray

www.AlisaMurray.comNationally recognized

portrait artist and award-winning columnist.

In 2012, Alisa embarked on a life-changing journey to the Hope Endowment's orphanage in India. On the nine-hour ride to visit the children, Alisa captured this image that she describes as "a perfectly peaceful image that represents balance and calm amidst the chaos in an imperfect world."

O ver the past several months, I have been listening to family and health radio. One afternoon, doctors were discussing genetic mutations, and how what

we do to our bodies actually genetically rewires our DNA. Did you know that? They stated what we put into our bodies actu-ally alters how we react and respond. They were discussing the e-cigarette and how it uses antifreeze to vaporize tobacco, therefore making the e-cigarette way more dangerous than a regular cigarette. The hookah bars we see popping up where teens are socially gathering and smoking are actually more dangerous than cigarettes because of the carbon used to light the hookah. The point, though, that came across alarmingly clear was that what we do to our bodies genetically modifies us and will pass to our offspring. Yes, I know what you’re thinking. Reread the last sentence once more! What we do now changes what kind of people we are creating. Bingo!

I started contemplating the possibilities. Can you imagine what was going through my head? We know our minds are the timekeepers and destiny makers of our time. We know that what we think we actually become; this is the most im-portant lesson to learn in post-Freudian psychology. Our minds are so pliable. This is why parenting is, of course, the most important job we have to accomplish in life. Passing the good stuff to our children and hoping they don’t suffer too much because we have never done it before, and we will and do make mistakes. Nonetheless, if we know that what we put in our bodies genetically transforms the system, effec-tively rewiring it for future generations, then we cannot deny the grand possibilities of what passing on views and overall

concepts towards mankind will influence future generations. We can see through generations that racism and equality

change and sometimes disappear over time. Why then, can not all of the hate be wiped from the earth? How can we as a whole in humanity make a genetic rewiring of man and woman and their views on each other, the way they choose to mate, the way they choose to disagree? I’ll tell you. Every parent and every adult has to make a conscious decision to with their minds feel and act with love. They have to teach that it is the only way to a peace like we have never seen on earth.

It is easy to decide to never smoke again if a doctor can genetically prove to you that you are disrupting your DNA by doing so, and what’s worse, actually mutating your genes to pass to the next generations, making them more susceptible to cancer. disease and addictions. It should be very clear, then, that our mindsets are absolutely no different. Each family affects their next generations by teaching hate and non-tolerance, and that is why there is no peace on earth.

My wish as we celebrate the beautiful joy of Jesus’s birth, and we hold dear to us our loved ones is that we choose to in 2014 become finely tuned in as humans to our greatest poten-tials and ways to influence the next generations. Every new year brings New Year’s resolutions. By conscious modifica-tions, we have the greatest potential to create peace on earth!

Take Care of YOU!
