From The Desk of Father Jon“American Express, don’t leave home without it!”

For those of us reading this that grew up in the 1970’s, we remember this advertisement. It’s like another: “Orange Juice, it’s not just for breakfast anymore.” Whether we want to admit it or not, these jingles and ad lines get stuck in our head. It is like looking at a professional football game. We come to expect someone in the stands to have a sign which reads “John 3:16.” We have this verse from Scripture imbedded in our minds – “For God so loved the world that He gave His only-begotten Son, that all who believe in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”

To all that is truly important in our relationship to God, I would like to add one more saying that can make all the difference.

Confession – It’s too late to wait!

So you might ask, “Father Jon, what’s the rush? Why the hurry? Glad you asked that my dear spiritual child in Christ Jesus, glad you asked. First, let us all understand the spiritual necessity for our participation in this great Mystery of Repentance and Confession. Not only do we inherently know the need for us to be reconciled unto God and each other, but we experience the blessings through the lives of the saints! The Holy Scripture bears witness to this in abundance.

Just find the passages about the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32), the Paralytic (John 5:1-15), Peter the Apostle (John 21:15-19), the woman caught in adultery (John 8:3-11), and you will come to understand the transformation that occurred in the lives of these blessed souls because Christ forgave them their sins. After the resurrection of Christ, Jesus commissioned His Apostles to continue this most wondrous ministry of forgiveness when He said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” (John 20:22-23) Jesus even foretold the Apostles of this ministry in Matthew 16:16-19 and 18:18.

With forgiveness comes the peace from above, the peace that goes beyond all understanding because it comes from God Himself. But why the hurry to repent and come to confession? The Lord Himself gave us the answer to this question. He said, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand,” (Mt 4:17) and in the parable of the 10 virgins He says, “Watch, therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.” (Mt 25:13, see also Mk 13:35-37 & Lk 21:34-36) Our Lord is coming, let us be prepared to meet Him! May Jesus find our souls repentant, forgiven and shining like the day of our baptism!

If you are ill, you go to the doctor. Usually when we go to the doctors they will ask about our symptoms, do an exam, and run tests. After this, the doctor may prescribe medicines, that will effect a cure of your sickness. Who would go to the doctor, find out there is a cure and decide to remain sick or even allow the sickness to progress until death? No, of course not! Yet, the Great Physician of our souls and bodies, Jesus Christ, has given us the one medicine that can save our souls, repentance and confession, and many times we reject the cure and would rather remain sick. My dear child in Christ, may this never be so! Your heavenly Father loves you, and like the Prodigal Son, He is ready to receive us back into His loving embrace and make us whole again.

Let us run, not walk, to the hospital of the faithful, our Orthodox Church. Let us seek out time to renew our souls and find forgiveness. We have the blessed opportunity to do just that on December 5th and 6th. Fr. Christodoulos, our Iero Kyrix, and myself will be available for confession on these days. Please call the office and set a time to visit with either of us.

Love in Christ,+ Fr. Jon Emanuelson

From Emanuel Miliotis,Parish Council President

I want to thank all those who attended our General Assembly meeting on the 24th of November. It provided a great opportunity to update our parish on all the great things that we are doing. Additionally it highlighted that fact that as a church that is growing, so is our expenses. Thus now more than ever as we look ahead to the 2014 Stewardship Drive, we ask that each of you prayerfully think through your offering to our church. We know we have a big goal but we know also we have a God that will help provide.

Additionally we are in the midst of having our parish council elections on Sunday, December 8. Anyone who is interested in running please call the office so you can be steered to the election committee. We are always looking for a variety of backgrounds and ages that can bring talents to serve the church.

December is also a busy time of year with church services and activities. The following are just a few to keep on the calendar.

• Our church will be celebrating our name’s day and we will have vespers on Thursday, December 5th.

There will be a light meal in the Hellenic hall afterwards. We will also celebrate Divine Liturgy on Friday, December 6th. We are blessed to also have Fr. Christodoulos, who was at our Cross Dive, be here also to celebrate our Feast Day with us. He and Fr. Jon will be hearing confessions. Please call the office to make an appointment.

• Sunday School Christmas Nativity pageant will be on Wednesday, December 11th. Please take the time to come out and support our children.

• As a reminder we will be holding services this year on both Christmas evening Tuesday, December 24 as well as Christmas Day Wednesday, December 25. Please consult the bulletin or our website for the specific times.

Finally I would like to wish all our families as St. Nicholas a very Merry Christmas.

In Christ’s service Emanuel Miliotis

Outreach & EvangelismJim Stasios

Best wishes to all Parishioners for the Nativity Fast, which began on November 15th and will conclude on Christmas Eve.

A big “Thank You” to all volunteers that helped at the community-wide STOP HUNGER NOW (SHN) meal-packaging event on the UNC Wilmington campus on Saturday, November 16th. Parishioners from St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, St. Basil the Great Orthodox Church, brothers from AHEPA’s Cape Fear Chapter #408 and teammates from DaVita HealthCare Partners worked during SHN’s first shift. We provided a total of 95 volunteers

We also thank the parishioner who made financial contributions for this SHN event. The St. Basil Parish contributed $500, AHEPA 408 Philanthropies, Inc. contributed $1,000 and the KT Community Foundation (DaVita) awarded a $3,000 grant this year. Our two parishes and two partners contributed a total of $9,284! This amount covered the cost of 37,136 of the 285,120 meals, which were packaged on November 16th. Thanks everyone for your contributions, encouragement and support!

As we begin the month of December and prepare for the Nativity of our Lord, let be mindful of those less fortunate than ourselves. As you shop during the holidays, drop some change into the Salvation Army’s red kettles or perform random acts of kindness. Try to visit the sick, homebound and those in nursing and rehab facilities, donate food for our Parish’s Christmas baskets, adopt an angel from the Angel Tree. Let’s try to do more for others this Christmas/Nativity Season.

Save the Date: February 9, 2014-Our Parish’s 4th Annual “Family Outreach Sunday”. If you know someone you think we should invite, we ask that you forward their name(s) to the Parish Office. Look for more information to follow.

If you are interested in working with our Outreach and Evangelism ministry team, please contact Fr. Jon or our Parish Council President, Manny Miliotis.

Best wishes to you and your family for a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!

From “The Art of Prayer:An Orthodox Anthology”, Ch. 2 “What is Prayer”? by Theophan the Recluse

…Desire to be filled with the Spirit, and sing with that aim in mind. Singing will set alight the Spirit or lead to a state of infusion by the Spirit, or show forth His action. According to Blessed Theodoret, the Apostle refers to spiritual rapture when he says, “Be filled with the Spirit” (Eph.v.18), and he shows us how to attain this, namely by “ unceasingly singing praises to God, entering deeply into oneself, and always stimulating thought”. That is to say: by singing with the tongue and heart.…Feeling, expressed in words, is carried by words into the soul of those who hear or read them. The same can be said of Church songs. Psalms, hymns and Church songs are spiritually inspired outbursts of feeling towards God. The Spirit of God filled His elect and they expressed the

Page 6: December 2013 Monthly Newsletter

6

plenitude of their feelings in songs. He who sings them as they should be sung enters again into the feelings which the author experienced when he originally wrote them. Being filled by these feelings, he draws near to the state wherein he is able to receive the grace of the Spirit, and to adapt himself to it. The purpose of Church songs is precisely to make the spark of grace that is hidden within us burn brighter and with greater warmth. This spark is given by the sacraments. Psalms, hymns and spiritual odes are introduced, to fan the spark and transform it into flame. They act on the spark of grace as the wind acts on a spark hidden in firewood.

Zoyra and Romiosini

Many of our Zoyra and Romiosini Dancers are busy preparing to go to the Hellenic Dance Festival in Orlando, FL during the Martin Luther King Holiday in January. Zaharoula Katsikis is teaching our youth new dances. Nota Dukas is sewing new costumes, with elaborate embroidery work - Beautiful work Nota! These costumes remain property of St Nicholas and will be used for future generations of Hellenic Dancers.

We will be doing some fund-raisers so that new costumes can be sewn for our dancers. On December 15th, the coffee hour will be sponsored by our dancers and their families. On December 21 and 22 our dancers will go Christmas Caroling. Please sign up to invite them to sing at your home. See signup sheet in the Hellenic Center. Please donate generously for our youth. Thank you.

Merry Christmas!

Just a few weeks ago, I didn’t even want to hear a Christmas carol - I said “please don’t play them - it will stress me out!” The very next day was when we

delivered our table centerpieces to the Good Shepherd Center and it certainly put everything into perspective! I left there with a new attitude about the holidays and remembering to focus on what is important. We are here to serve and the goal is to make everyone we encounter feel BELOVED. I want my family to truly understand that we are celebrating the nativity of Jesus Christ! Such a beautiful time in our life!

Thank you to all our teachers, parents and children who created such a beautiful table setting for the Good Shepherd Center. We had several parents bake treats as well. What a blessing! They would like us to do it for Christmas as well! Anytime you feel like baking, let me know. They have about 50 overnight guests on average. It would be a cool project for a couple of families to do together. We will aim for December 15th to create our Christmas centerpieces.

Our Christmas Pageant is coming up on December 11th at 5:30! A big thank you and shout out to Renee Psilos and Marianne Fulton for coordinating and directing it. It is going to be fabulous!! Dinner will be provided and…………………..We will have a surprise visitor as well! HO HO HO!

Thank you for all you do and we are so happy to have U in CH RCH!

GOYATina Bostic

As we prepare for the busy holidays with family and loved ones let's remember those in need. Each year the GOYANs focus on helping children in need. And we thank our St. Nicholas family for the wonderful support you've given us each year. It is truly amazing the love and generosity felt from all of you!

Our focus this year is on homeless or displaced high school teenagers. New Hanover County high schools have a total of 131 students under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Act. This act defines homeless children as “individuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence”. High school is a time for teens to focus on school and to have fun. This should not be a time to worry about the basic necessities.

How can you help? Please adopt one of our 20 teens we are helping this year for Christmas. We are working with the high school social workers to assist these teens and a list of teens will be out soon. Some of the basic items they need include shampoo, conditioner, soap, and toothpaste/toothbrush. The GOYANs will shop and make 20 gift bags of toiletries for each teen, so we need your donations.....please help our teenagers help these teenagers!

Please look in the weekly bulletin for more information. You can also contact one of the GOYA advisors, Tina Bostic, Koula Katsikis, Irene Vogiatzis, David Snow or Mary Beth Miliotis if you would like to adopt a teen or donate items such as toiletries or gift cards. We appreciate your support!

OCF Meetings & Host Family Sponsorship Program

Alexandros Theodoropoulos

On Monday, November 18th, 2013, our UNCW /CFCC Orthodox Christian Fellowship (OCF) campus ministry group hosted a Guest Speaker and Documentary Screening event at the UNCW Lumina Theater, which was open to the public. Sarah Tellis, who was the guest speaker, presented her documentary "Nefarious" and spoke about slave trading around the world and what she does through the Pearl Ministry (http://pearlministry.org/). Just imagine that over 27 million people are enslaved around the world. This is more than double the number of Africans enslaved during the Trans-Atlantic slave trade … We would like to thank all of you that came to the event and further express our appreciation to our OCF officers that worked to make this event happen! All of us in attendance definitely felt that both the documentary as well as the guest speaker Sara Tellis's presentation on the human trafficking issue were very powerful.

On another note, our OCF group meets at 7:00pm every other Tuesday night at our church. In addition, the group has informal lunch meetings with Fr. Jon and Fr. Timothy (from St. Basil) at the Varsity Cafe in the UNCW Fisher Student Center starting at 12:00pm every Tuesday. All are welcome to join. In case you know of any students that would be interested, please encourage them to attend. We would further like to identify potential host families for our OCF students. The pertinent document/form can be found on our website at www.stnicholaswilmington.org/Docs/OutreachEvangelism/OCF/OCFSponsors.pdf . Please see Fr. Jon for more information about our new OCF Host Family or Sponsorship program. Please consider becoming a host family for one of our OCF students.

Hellenic CultureKitsa Wiersteiner

The Hellenic Culture ministry would like to thank Fr. Jon for his support of the OXI Day celebration. Many thanks to Susan Lawler and family for donating the desserts in honor of the 40-day blessing of their grandson and to everyone who brought drinks. Many, many thanks to Zaharoula Katsikis for her dedication to teaching Greek dances to Zoyra and Romiosini Dance groups. Also many thanks to Zaharoula’s dance helpers working with the Zoyra dancers; these volunteers are Dimitri Brown, Dino Ioannou, Katerina Katsikis, George Malahias and Maria Poulos We are so thankful to Nota Dukas for the endless hours she puts in sewing the beautiful Greek costumes. STEWARDSHIP 2013

Just a reminder to all parishioners that we would greatly appreciate everyone completing their 2013 pledges. We are currently running at a deficit of approximately $25,000! Please make every effort to complete your pledge and if anyone is able to give any additional funds at this time, it is greatly needed!Thank you to all St. Nicholas parishioners for your contributions of time, talent and treasure to our beloved church.

STEWARDSHIP 2014

We will begin our 2014 Stewardship Drive on Sunday November 24. We always enjoy hearing our youth and parishioners speak to us on the topic of Stewardship. It serves as a reminder to all of us of the importance of sacrificial giving and that we are all called to give our “first fruits” to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

We have a great deal to be thankful for here at St. Nicholas. We ask you to support our many worthy ministries. Giving to His Church is a way to thank God for His grace and generosity. The question becomes “How can I thank God for my many blessings?” We are asking all parishioners to please consider increasing their pledge amounts in 2014. Our expenses have increased and we need everyone’s help!

You will be receiving a Stewardship packet in the mail. Before completing the Commitment Card and Information Form, please give prayerful consideration to the commitment you are making. Giving is not a substitute for commitment – it is an expression of your commitment.

“A Rich Man is not one who has much but one who gives much. For what he gives away remains his

forever” (St. John Chrysostom)
