MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENTDecember is party month and a time for just plain fun together.Don't forget to bring a small gift if you can to the meeting onDecember 15, a few treats and your best flowering orchids forthe Show table. Your board has been working all year for youand I would like to thank them for their efforts. Each job isimportant and together they give us the fine programs, Orchids101, web site and newsletter, hospitality etc. that we all enjoy.

And now we would like a small gift back from you as members. Please tell us whether the Society is meeting your needs, and ifnot tell us how we can better serve you. We are open to allsuggestions. We already have one suggestion, to have aprogram on trends in Phalaenopsis breeding and we are

searching for a speaker to meet that request. Give us up to 3 suggestions and put them in the suggestion box whichwill be on the show table. Your Board will review them in the New Year and report back to you. The American OrchidSociety is also conducting a campaign shortly to determine how it can better serve its members and attract new ones. Some suggestions are: updated power point presentations with audio for those meetings when the speaker doesn't orcan't show; T-shirts upon buying membership, free cultural information on the web site, extensions to the magazineOrchids when you buy an electronic copy there are links to other articles of related interest.

Looking foward to seeing you in December at our Christmas party.Happy growing,

Jean Hollebone

The Trustees and Members meeting was held in Coral Gables with most of the meetings being held at FairchildBotanic Gardens (the new home of the AOS). It was a great opportunity to get to know Fairchild and for Fairchild tosee what the AOS is about. A nice show was arranged by the Coral Gables Orchid Society and at the AOS judging, awards were given to many local orchidists. In conjunction with the meetings, a number of AOS awards werepresented. The Distinguished Affiliated Society Award (DSSA) was given to the Orchid Society of WesternPennsylvania for their volunteer commitment to Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh. An article will be forthcoming inOrchids about their joint project whereby they will be assisting in the establishment of an historic slipper orchidcollection. An AOS Gold Medal was given to Harold Koopowitz for his dedication to orchids in conservation, biology, hybridizing and publishing; two AOS Silver Medals were bestowed upon Aileen Garrison and Jose Izquierdo inrecognition of their service to the AOS judging system. Leon Glicenstein was recognized with an AOS Fellow for hisoutstanding scientific, horticultural and hybridizing in addition, Leonid Averyanov was recognized with an AOS Fellowfor his work on Vietnam orchids. Two Hybridizing awards were presented to Milton Carpenter for his work withOncidiinae and warmth-tolerant cymbidiums and to Gene Crocker of Carter and Holmes for his art-shade cattleyas.

Anyone wishing to be considered for judging at the 21st

WOC in South Africa, must submit their application to do so byDecember 31, 2013. There will be no late registrations considered. In addition, discounted registration ends onDecember 31, 2013. For more information or to register, go to www.woc21.org.

Save the date for the Spring Members and Trustees meeting to be held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, April 30 throughMay 4, 2014 in conjunction with their show – Orchids – A Growing Obsession. This event will be held in conjunctionwith meetings of the Mid-America Orchid Congress, the Slipper Orchid Alliance, the International PhalaenopsisAlliance, Pleurothallid Alliance and Angraecoid Alliance.

Wishing you all the best during this holiday season and for a happy 2014.

THANK YOU JANET and JOHN JOHNS!The Society would like to thank Janet and John Johns for hosting our last two out-of-town guestspeakers, Francisco Miranda (November guest speaker) and Tom Etheridge (October guest speaker). Our out-of-town speakers appreciate very much the kindness, warmth and hospitality extended to themwhen they arrive in Ottawa. Oftentimes our speakers arrive by plane at the Ottawa airport and are metby Janet who picks our speakers up, brings them to her home and makes sure they arrive in good timeat the Tom Brown Arena to set up their presentation and sale table if they are bringing plants for sale.Janet and John look after our guests’ needs during their stay in Ottawa until it is time for our guests todepart for home or to another orchid society destination in Canada. Thank you very much, Janet and

John for everything you do!

If any member would like to host any one of our out-of-town speakers, please let Jean Hollebone or André Coutureknow. It’s a wonderful way to make new friends and learn a lot of new things.

2014 OOS ANNUAL SHOW

Dave Cooper, our Show Chairman (pictured on left, photo taken by Arlene Lang), along withJanet Johns, our 2014 Show Co-Chair, held their first show committee meeting this November17

that the McNabb Community Centre. Many of the Society members who have served on the

Show Committee in past years have volunteered to continue which is always a great help.Thank you one and all!!! At the end of this newsletter members will find a List of the ShowCommittee Members looking after the different show related responsibilities. In the monthsahead we will be looking for volunteers to help with specific activities. This volunteer help isessential as there are many things to do. If you would like to help or would like to learn moreinformation about a particular show activity, do not hesitate to contact either one of our ShowCo-Chairs or the member looking after the show activity that may be of interest to you.

As most members now know, our 2014 show will not be held at the Nepean Sportsplex. The 2014 show will be heldApril 19

th-20

th(Easter Weekend) at the Kanata Recreational Complex (KRC) located at 100 Walter Baker Place,

Ottawa, ON K2V 1A2, just off from Terry Fox Drive. Special arrangements have been made with the City of Ottawa toopen the Complex expressly for us to hold our annual show. We hope to return to the Nepean Sportsplex in 2015.

The 2014 show posters have been produced and the English and French versions are available on the Society’s website (http://www.ottawaorchidsociety.com/show_2010.html). In view of the change of venue, we are encouragingmembers to inform their friends and any other folks you may know who may be interested in our show of the newplace and time of our show. It would be unfortunate if folks coming to our show for many years go to the NepeanSportsplex under the mistaken assumption that we are at the same location in 2014. So please do share this info withfolks you know who may have an interest in what our show offers.

Other Photos from November Meeting (photos taken by Rick Sobkowicz)In addition to our show table, we usually have Society members who are selling orchids from their own collections.Sometimes these plants are as stunning as the plants on the show table. However, because they are not on the showtable, these plants are not ribbon judged. So here is a “peek” of what you can buy from our members at our monthlymeetings:

They live in Green Valley, Ontario.

NOVEMBER MEETINGThe November meeting with our guest speaker, FranciscoMiranda of Miranda Orchids (Brazil), was an excellent andinformative presentation. Francisco (pictured on the rightstanding between our Society President, Jean Hollebone, and our Program Coordinator, André Couture) provided avery interesting overview of the Brazilian ecology andexplanation of where the different orchids grow. Sadly, asthe Brazilian surface is stripped of its natural vegetation, the orchid species that once grew in these areas haveeither disappeared or are disappearing at an alarmingrate.

Francisco brought with him a generous and diverse supplyof Brazilian orchid species grown by Miranda Orchids. These plants were priced below his catalog price andmembers buying his plants at the November meetingsaved themselves the shipping, handling and documentation fee that would have applied if buying these identicalplants by mail order. There were a lot of excited members acquiring plants and we hope to see these beautiful orchidsin bloom at upcoming monthly meetings and in our annual show.

Our sincerest thanks to Francisco for coming to Ottawa. It was a pleasure to have him. Many thanks to all the OOSmembers who made this visit possible, took care of Francisco and helped him with the sale table.

Above from left: Francisco’s sale table at the mid-point of our meeting; examples of some of the orchid species thatwere available for purchase: Cattleya intermedia aquinii x sib; Cattleya harrisoniana (Peloric); Cattleya leopoldii; and,Cattleya maxima. All these orchid species were offered for sale at $20 (CDN.).

There were approximately 55 members and one orchid in the audience to hear Francisco’s special presentation.

SILENT AUCTIONAt most monthly OOS meetings, membersand visitors will see a table towards the backand off to the side of the meeting roomlooking very much like what you see in thephoto on the right. This is our silent auctiontable. What you see on the table are booksthat were once in our society library. As ourlibrary received less and less use and itbecame harder and harder to find volunteersto help with the library, the Society decidedto close down this one aspect of Societyactivity and the books are being made available to anyone wishing to buy any one of the books on theauction table by way of a silent bid. There are many expensive books in the library collection and many ofthem are no longer available from the publisher so if you are interested in owning a hardcopy edition, this isone way to acquire your copy and at a much reduced price to the original retail price.

Some of the more expensive and scarcer books have minimum bids at which the bidding may begin. Othershave no minimum or reserve bid and will be sold to the highest bidder. Persons interested in any book areencouraged to write their name and bid on the bidding sheet corresponding to their book of interest. Thething that makes a silent auction different from a regular auction is that the bidding action ceases at anunknown time, sometimes with or without forewarning and the highest bidder gets their “prize”. You canreturn anytime to the bidding table to revise your bid but if you wait until moments before the auctionceases, you may risk not writing down your bid in time. So if you really, REALLY want something on thebidding table, write down your highest comfortable bid and hope you are not outbid.

Good luck at the next silent auction.

(Editor’s note: There will be no silent auction of library books at the December meeting.)
