The holiday season is upon us. Decorations already adorn our downtown lampposts and colder temperatures have arrived. On Friday, December 6th Governor Bentley will light the State Christmas tree, we’ll have our annual Christmas Parade on Dexter Avenue and then Montgomery’s

Christmas tree will be illuminated in front of City Hall. Marching bands and floats from across the River Region will proudly show off their talent and creativity. It promises to be fun for everyone.

During the month of December we’ll also observe the 58th anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott. This year, our festivities are part of a special year-long commemoration of civil rights events that occurred across the South. A traveling exhibit of artifacts will be on display and a special tribute is planned for the Rev. Robert and Mrs. Jeannie Graetz and Attorney Fred Gray.

4 The Pride of Montgomery

A Word from Our Mayor

Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange

These activities are the start of our ramp up to 2015, the 50th anniversary of the Selma-to-Montgomery voting rights march. The eyes of the nation and world will be upon us; and we’re preparing for the spotlight. A major renovation will soon clean up blighted portions of the Voting Trail. A construction project to enhance the Dexter Avenue streetscape has just begun after years of planning. The sidewalks will be more accessible for the disadvantaged, damaged trees will be replaced and there will be a uniform appearance from the Court Square fountain up to the Capitol.

Renovation and upgrade projects are taking place across all of Montgomery. In a few weeks, some our police officers, firefighters and medics will have a new base of operations at the former Montgomery Mall location. This will allow for shorter response times and better protection.

Key portions of the Genetta Park on West Fairview have been completed that will protect our waterways from pollution. The park acts as a filter to trap substances that would otherwise contaminate the Catoma Creek and the Alabama River. This revolutionary design is one of the first of its kind in the country, and represents the efforts we are taking to ensure Montgomery lives up to its reputation as the “Capital of Dreams”.

Have a joyous holiday season and safe and prosperous New Year.

Donnie Sasser opened

Two Blessings Gift

Boutique in April 2013.

When asked about his

passion for his store,

Donnie is quick to respond, “It’s a great feeling at the end

of the day to know you’ve made new friends, brightened

their day and their gift will bring joy to their friends as well.”

Donnie strives to help his customers find the perfect gift

by listening to their requests and trying to accommodate

them as much as possible. Donnie is constantly looking for

unique and different items - things you won’t see in other

stores in the area. He likes simple gifts that have some

meaning, a great story, and simple message - gifts that

inspire both the buyer and the recipient.

Do not be surprised if one of the gifts you pick out is one of

Donnie Sasser’s original Faceless Angels and/or Reflection

Crosses from The Donnie Sasser Collection, which are

featured in hundreds of stores across the country. The

store also features several other local artists. When asked

about owning his own business, Donnie responds, “It’s a

great sense of accomplishment owning your own business.

You know at the end of the day that the hard work and

planning has been a blessing to others.”

Two Blessings Gift Boutique is open Monday 10 a.m. - 5

p.m., Tuesday thru Friday 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., and Saturday

10 a.m. - 5 p.m. It is located at 8127 Vaughn Road in the

8 The Pride of Montgomery

What was Christmas like in Montgomery, and the South, during the War Between the States? Supplies were scarce, es-pecially as the war continued, paper money was almost worth-

less, most able bodied men were off fighting, unless they received a short leave, and the women had to add “making Christmas” to the load they already carried.

There were two sisters who lived in Montgomery during the war. Bell and Sarah Follansbee were from New England and taught school in Montgomery. Sarah Fol-lansbee kept a diary of her time in Montgomery, which includes Christmas of 1864. She and her sister spent that Christmas with friends between Wetumpka and Hayneville, eating, dancing, and exchanging gifts. She notes in her diary they were given “bundles of the richest ‘lit wood’ clean cut in small splints delighted us.” These were small bundles of kindling, which were popular gifts as re-sources became scarce. Gifts also included homemade woolen mit-tens, fruits, nuts, and cakes. Food

at one of the parties consisted of “Chicken salad, fruitcake (a nov-elty)” along with other items. An-other event recorded by Sarah Fol-lansbee stated a nice tea was served.

Another recorded Confeder-

ate Christmas is from an article written by Varina Howell Davis, wife Confederate President Jef-ferson Davis. She writes of how most of the focus was prepara-tion for Christmas at the local Episcopal Orphanage as well as her own family. Mrs. Davis de-scribes how young ladies learned to “make do” with what was avail-able. She states, “some small feath-ered chickens and parrots…were furnished with new tail feathers, lambs minus much of their wool were supplied with a cotton wool substitute, rag dolls were plumped out and recovered with clean cloth, and the young ladies paint-ed their fat faces in bright colors and furnished them with beads for eyes.” The young ladies learned to remake items or take an old item and turn it into something new. Mrs. Davis records, “Trunks of old things were turned out and

snipping of silk and even woolen of bright colors were found…the beauty of those home-made things astonished us all, for they looked quite ‘custom-made.’” Gifts were made for everyone, including servants, who were included in the family game of who could wish a “Merry Christmas” be-fore someone else said it to them. Everyone also attended Church in observance of Christmas.

Despite the desolation of war, Christmas was still observed throughout the South. Having parties, sharing laughs, singing songs, and exchanging gifts, no matter the quality, helped every-one during that time. Mrs. Davis remarked, “These young people are gray-haired now, but the les-sons of self-denial, industry and frugality in which they became past mistresses then, have made of them the most dignified, self-reliant and tender women I have ever know—all honor to them.”

In all the years I’ve been a dentist, I’ve had the honor of being involved in the ever-changing and improving field of dentistry. It has, and continues to make, some incredible strides in learning more about your dental and general health, improving the materials and methods to raise the quality of the dentistry you receive, and always discovering new breakthrough facts about the art and science of dentistry.

I’ve also been here long enough to come across some pretty worthless facts about dentistry that have no therapeutic value at all. So to round out this year, I’m dedicating this article to share with you 10 of the most worthless ones… I hope you enjoy them!

Dr. Frank K. Rho received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from Loma Linda University in 1997. He has worked with numerous dentists and specialists and has lectured in communities on the subject of dental care throughout the United States. He is an active member of a number of organizations composed of dentists who keep abreast of the latest trends and techniques in dentistry. Dr. Rho practices general dentistry in Prattville, Alabama.

by Dr. Frank K. Rho

1) The average human produces 25,000 quarts of saliva in a lifetime. That’s enough spit to fill 2 swim-ming pools.

2) The Statue of Liberty’s mouth is three feet wide.

3) An elephant’s tooth can weigh over 6 pounds.

4) In 1994, a prison inmate in West Virginia braided dental floss into a rope, scaled the wall and escaped.

5) A sneeze comes out of your mouth at over 600 mph.

6) According to a Time Magazine sur-vey, 59% of people would rather sit in a dentist’s chair than sit next to a person talking on a cell phone.

7) Dogs have 10 more teeth than people. Cats have 2 less teeth.

8) A mosquito has 47 teeth.

9) Doc Holiday was a dentist.

10) The first commercial toothbrush similar to what we use today was invented by a man in prison in 1770 made from bristles and an animal bone from his prison dinner.

I hope you have a very fun and merry Christmas and a happy new year!

Every year, the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce honors an outstanding minority or female-owned small business for its achievements and contributions to the community with the Point of Light Award. We are so proud to live in a community rich with citizens who routinely pay it forward. We are equally blessed that one of the nominees for a Point of Light Award this year is our own Virginia Saunders!

The award process is open to minority-owned and female-owned businesses in Montgomery and the River Region. Two awards are given, one for businesses that

have been operational for one to nine years and another for ten or more years. In addition to the afore mentioned criteria, nominees must be for-profit, their business must show stability and growth, they must have positive community involvement and they must be a member in good standing with the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce.

The 2013 Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce Point of Light Award ceremony was held on November 7. Many deserving people were nominated for both awards. The final contestants in category one, people who have been in business from one to nine years, were: Tish Leonard- Cupcakes by Tish, Shankar Yalamanchili M.D.- River Region Psychiatry Associates, Jennifer Cooper- Gigi’s Cupcakes, Kim Hall- Kreative Moments, Barbara Handmacher- Unbelievable Flooring and Décor, Eugene Tinker- Certified Technical Experts, Charles Lewis- Supreme

Cleaning, Inc., Ahmad Austin- Cy3 Computing, LLC, Temisha Mitchell Young- Little Magic Cards and Virginia Saunders- Pride of Montgomery Magazine. The winner of this category was Shankar Yalamanchili, M.D. with River Region Psychiatry Associates.

The award for this category went to Sherry Weeks with ERA Weeks and Browning Realty.

We are very proud of all the contestants and congratulate you on this honor. Thanks to all of you for your continued service and dedication to making our community better and brighter!

On a sign was printed Hunter Salder, D.C.Now Santa was not one to like a new tactic,But all else had failed so he’d try chiropractic.

“It must be the hurry, the tension and all,I simply can’t seem to get on the ball,Life used to be easy, just toy guns and whistles,Now I have to dodge fall-out, spaceships and missiles.”

“And Doc, take a look at the size of this pack!Have you any idea what it does to my back?”Poor Santa was miserable, just barely able,With the help of the doctor to get on the table.

The doctor was gentle, without fuss or tussle. He examined the vertebrae and relaxed the muscles. He spotted the trouble and then with a click,Started aligning the ailing St. Nick.

Santa felt his aches and pains quickly abate,In no time at all, he began to feel great. His cheeks were glossy with a brand new glow,And a healthy Kris Kringle was roaring to go.

As he went out the door, he threw the receptionist a kiss,Why, it had been centuries since he’d felt as good as this! Then once more he shouldered the bagful of toys,His heart overflowing with true Christmas joys.

T’was the day before Christmas, but there was no cheer, No jingle bells jingled, no sound of reindeer.

The word had got out that Santa was sick,There’d be no friendly visit from a sick St. Nick.

The people were sad, no happiness sounded. For Christmas had come, but Santa was grounded.

He walked down the street and what should he see?

We’ve made it through the holiday of giving thanks. Now it’s on to the holiday of giving gifts. When you think of giving an individual a present or gift during the holidays, fitness doesn’t normally surface at the top of the list. Why is that??? A runner would love nothing more than a brand new pair or two of his or her favorite running shoes OR a paid registration to the next half or full marathon of their choice. Why wouldn’t they also be excited about a holiday gift certificate for training sessions with a personal trainer OR a RezFIT BOOTCAMP gift certificate? There is no better gift to give a loved one than the gift of physical fitness!

We have had a great year sharing our experience and expertise with the River Region community. And what a privilege it’s been for us to have the opportunity to write for The Pride of Montgomery. We would like to thank all of our readers for staying interested and tuned-in to our articles. We enjoy sharing our knowledge, advice and compassion towards those that are continuously seeking motivation and encouragement while working on individual lifestyle changes.

The year 2013 has been amazing for fitness and the upcoming year will top this one by far. There are so many more people trying to live healthier and so many more striving to get in shape. If you have an individual like that around you and you are thinking about a gift for the holidays, please consider the gift of fitness. Merry Christmas!

Feelings are neither negative nor positive. Yes it is true - feelings are just feelings, and nothing more than that! All of us, men and women, have been endowed with or should I say, blessed with an awesome set of tear ducts and the ability to release tears. Not just when our eyes need to clean themselves, but when we are filled with the most intense emotions or filled with a high degree of emotional pressure. Those tear ducts are like a set of feeling pressure valves. Crying helps to release some of the pent up emotion, so we can perhaps focus again and make decisions without those emotions being the single guiding force controlling the decision-making process .

Feelings are neither negative nor positive, but rather energy looking for a way to be expressed. And our tears, or feeling pressure valves, are just there to help us release pent up emotions. I believe this is the reason we all have the ability to cry. To further support my claim, researchers have found stress hormones in our tears. All of us know how euphoric we feel after a good cry and how good it feels to laugh until we cry.

However, when we learn or train ourselves not to use this awesome set of abilities that we have been blessed with, trouble begins. In such pent up emotional situations, we walk around looking for opportunities to feel or to vent, or find ways to numb ourselves, often with overuse of sedatives like alcohol and prescription drugs.

Even though emotions are neither negative nor positive, there is danger in not feeling. If all of us find a place, a person or a regular time to keep our emotions safe and fully feel them, we will most likely be capable of a clearer thought process. I wish all of you a very happy holiday and hope give yourself permission to feel the spirit of the season!

The holiday season is here - What happened? It seems like it just left a few weeks ago! What's on your wish list this season? It's funny, we read an article on the air earlier this week that stated more people are asking for "updated versions of already existing technology" this year. In other words, the iPhone 4 is no longer good enough - we want the iPhone 5. Nintendo Wii is being replaced by Xbox One (soon to followed by Xbox One-2, I'm sure) and don't forget the Ipad Air (the new thinner, sexier model), and Playstation 4 (because 1, 2 & 3 just don't cut it anymore). WHOA!

Somebody definitely knows what they're doing when it comes to marketing and selling us electronic gadgets! We also discovered the cheap iPhone chargers that we pick up ROUTINELY at truck stops on the road during vacations when 3 teens all need to charge their phones simultaneously no longer work with the new iPhone models. No, you have to buy the expensive "official" iPhone chargers.

But don't plan on bringing any of these things to the 2014 Sochi Winter Games, because the Olympic Committee has banned them from the events! Kind of a stunning move quite frankly - I wonder if it will hurt ticket sales? How will spectators survive without them?

It truly is our Christmas Wish that you will take time out of the busy, hectic lives we all lead to spend time with family and friends and maybe even let the iPhone battery go dead for a day or two. I mean really, do we need to post EVERY move we make on Facebook during Christmas? Do we like our relatives we only see once a year that much? JT goes home to St. Louis now and doesn't even know half the people there!

To help you stay connected with what's going on this holiday season, we hope you'll tune in as well to Mix 103-3 for our "Sounds of the Season" broadcast - Christmas tunes 24/7 thru Christmas Day! We'll see you around town as the

Are you in the mood for some cuisine inspired by the beauty and culture of Italy? Then Carrabba’s Italian Grill is the place for you! Carrabba’s was founded by Johnny Carrabba and Damian Mandola in Houston, Texas over 27 years ago out of a desire to create a family-style restaurant experience that made guests feel as though they were dining in a friend’s home.

Carrabba’s Italian Grill offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere featuring a unique dining environment for their customers. Dining experiences range from an intimate Family Table in the main dining room, where families and friends can share quality food and time, to a more intimate, social experience, where mature guests can meet-and-greet at the bar and sip some Italian or Californian vintages.

Many of the recipes on the menu here at Carrabba’s are those of Damian’s mother, Grace and sister, Rose. Damian travels the world in search of the best ingredients and the most unique Italian dishes to ensure that the food at Carrabba’s tastes authentic and delicious!

Carrabba’s is best known for its wood-burning grill. Signature dishes such as Chicken Bryan, Pollo Rosa Maria and Marsala are enhanced with flavor imparted by this grill.

II know you’ve already re-alized it, but Christmas is almost upon us! Time (if I can paraphrase the old say-ing) sure flies when you’re living life. But regardless of how many Christmases our God allows us to share with family and friends, some things never change. The gifts we give and receive be-come more sophisticated as we age, but one basic truth will always remain: the best things in life really are free. Here are three that are most valuable and precious to me.

Time. When I come to the end of my journey here on earth, the one thing I don’t want to do is look back over my life and say, “Girl, you wasted too much time!” So each day I try to make sure each moment is filled with something valuable. That doesn’t mean I try to spend every day working to gain something of value or working to earn money to buy things of material value. Filling each moment with something valuable means that whatever you do, it’s a blessing to you or to some-one else. Being a blessing to you means taking a vaca-tion sometimes, getting in some “me” time, or just sit-ting quietly to contemplate where you are in reaching your goals, obtaining your dreams, or being fulfilled. When it comes to being a

blessing others, well that can happen in so many ways and most of them have noth-ing to do with money. Just sharing some of your valu-able time with them can be life-changing.

Laughter. You know that side-splitting kind of laugh-ter you experience when you hear a really funny joke? It comes from an uncontrol-lably free place inside. It comes from your soul. It frees you, makes you have to hurry to the restroom, and causes mascara to run in spite of itself ! That kind of laughter can ease the harshest pain for a moment, calm the greatest fear for a few seconds, and soothe a troubled mind if only for a little while. But you know what else that kind of laugh-ter does? It makes us all the same. It connects us. It helps us realize that we’re not alone in the world. Now what better gift could you find anywhere in the uni-verse?

Love. This one is so im-portant because sometimes we get too caught up in try-ing to “prove” we love oth-ers or wanting them to do the same for us. We buy. We give. We expect. We buy more. We give more. We expect more. During this holiday season, I want to challenge you to think about only giving gifts that

your loved ones really need (especially the adults). It might be a very hard task, but I can almost guarantee you that beside each name one gift will fit all . . . and that’s love. Unconditional. Uncomplicated. Uncompro-mising. Love.

As a gift to me, do this for the special people in your life: buy three boxes for each of them. Leave them empty and wrap them beautifully. On Christ-mas morning, sit quietly as they open them one by one. With each person, decide which gift you want to give them first – time, laughter, or love – and tell them why you’re sharing that gift with them. Do the same for the other two. It might sound a little strange, but I’ll bet the sincerity of your giving these gifts will be appreci-ated more than you know.

Merry Christmas, PRIDE readers.

Fifty-five years ago, I became really fascinated by this man with many names. When I was five years old, I sat in his lap, explaining how “good” I had been and how much I deserved the Chatty Cathy doll I wanted so badly. As the first talking doll, Chatty Cathy was at the top of every little girl’s list. My mother had told me that due to her popularity, Santa would need to make substitutions. I looked deep into Santa’s eyes and assured him that should he choose me, Chatty Cathy would be loved forever, and I didn’t want any other toys. As the elf finally had to gently remove me from Santa’s lap, he laughed his “Ho!Ho!Ho!” and reminded me to believe. So I believed with all my heart and Santa delivered. Our Christmas tree seemed to have a special glow on Christmas morning because Chatty Cathy was sitting there in her red velvet party dress waiting for me. I ran to her and immediately pulled her talking string. Her first words were “I love you.” I promised to believe in Santa forever.I never understood why every year during my childhood, there was always some “kook” that would ask my teachers, scout leaders, and other adults the same question, “Is Santa real?” The answer was always the same: “Yes, Santa is real.” I mean, come on already. Why keeping asking, “Is Santa real?” That’s like asking, “Is love real?” Just because you can’t see him doesn’t make him less real. Sure he is surrounded by stories and legends, but that doesn’t make him less real.

Remember, Santa chose Christmas Eve to deliver his love to the children of the world. Each time I asked my mother and daddy the question, their answer was always the same, “If you believe in love, then you believe in Santa.” Since that time, the question, “Is Santa Real?" has crossed my mind. Through the years I have kept my eyes open and I am happy to report: Yes, Santa is real!!! Proof ? I have it; my daughter Karoline’s face when she discovered the Molly doll she wanted so badly under our tree. She cried with joy. When Emily, my daughter, noticed Santa had freckles she suddenly loved her freckles and announced freckles must be magic. When I asked my new son-in-law where he stood on the Santa question Eddie told the story about how his mom had set a trap to catch Santa, only to find a piece of red velvet and a note to “Believe,” so he believes too. My husband’s voice changes when he describes the stockings stuffed with simple and exotic Christmas goodies he and his brother shared. This year was my first year without my parents, yet Santa still came and Chatty Cathy is still with me. I believe… so, “You better watch out ‘cause Santa Claus is coming to town!" . . . and I will always believe in love and Santa.

This holiday season I am challenged to really think about the lessons I am teaching my children and how I am spending my money. I want to be intentional and purposeful with each purchase I make. This year instead of focusing so much on what my children are "getting," I really want to impress upon them the joys of "giving." One way we can do that is to fill a shoebox through Operation

Christmas Child. You can find these at Chick fil a, most churches, or on the Samaritian's Purse website. In addition to doing this with my

children, I also want to purchase things that give back as well. Here are a few things on my list this year.

"TOMS" shoes for my kids- for every pair your purchase, they give a pair to a needy kid.

This cute LOVE tote has tons of purposes. My little artist will fill it with on-the-go art

supplies, I am sure. You can find this at www.globalgirlfriends.com. This company helps to employ women in remote areas so that they can make a living creating beautiful products. This bag was made by some women who live on

the border of South Africa.

Cute Kids Tees. You can find this at www.commonthreadz.com. When you purchase one of their products, they either feed an orphan for a month or provide school uniforms for an orphan.

I am so inspired by companies who give that we have created our own product that gives. Buy this tank and it feeds an orphan for a week through the "Rice Bowls" organization. Find

this at www.kaseyhope.com.

And locally, you can pick up a few of these Christmas

Cards at "Blessings" in Prattville. 100% of profits go to the A.I.C.C. This organization gives food, clothing, and financial assistance to those in need in the tri county area.

This Christmas lets think beyond ourselves and our little world. Let's teach our children and remind ourself that it truly is better to give than to receive!

Kasey Hope is an Auburn University graduate and the

owner of P'zazz Art Studio in Prattville, where she has been teaching art lessons to adults

and children for 6 years.

Dog & Cat Vision: What DO They See?

Take a stroll down your local pet store shelf and chances are

good you will spot pet toys that are fire engine red, bright orange, and vivid yellow or green. Pet toy manufactures do a great job advertising to the “human eye” but what about the actual “consumer’s eye” (your pet)? Unlike the known misconception that pets are color blind, dogs and cats do see color, but their world still doesn’t look quite like ours. Research has shown any shade of red is difficult for your pet to see and may actually appear as a brownish gray. This probably explains why Rover has a hard time locating the red ball on the lawn. In fact, the latest research has shown that if the ball is red it is highly probably that your dog’s sense of smell leads him to the ball rather than his vision.

Dogs and cats do see colors, but the colors seen are neither as

rich nor contain as many color hues as those seen by humans. The eyes of people, dogs and cats contain special light catching cells called cones that respond to color. Dogs have fewer cones than humans suggesting their color vision will not be as rich or intense as ours. Another difference is humans have three different types of cones, dogs only have two.

Dr. King is a 2005 graduate of the Auburn School of Veterinary Medicine. He is a current member of the American Animal Hospital Association, Alabama Veterinary Medical Association and the American Veterinary Medical Association.

by Dr. Zeb A. King, DVM

So what exactly do dogs see? Recent testing done at the

University of California, Santa Barbara, has answered this puzzling question. Instead of seeing the rainbow as violet, blue, blue-green, green, yellow, orange and red, dogs would see it as dark blue, light blue, gray, light yellow, darker yellow, and very dark gray. Basically, dogs see the colors yellow, blue and gray. Which means, dogs see colors green, yellow and orange as yellowish and they see purple and blue as blue. So the red ball in green grass is obviously hard for your dog to see. A better option for pet toy manufacturers would actually be two contrasting colors together, like white and blue or white and purple.

As for cats, many researchers believe there color vision is comparable to a dog’s BUT with less

richness of hues and saturation for the colors. However, cats do have an advantage. Cats have a wider field of view—about 200 degrees, compared to humans who have 180 degree view. Cats also have a better range of peripheral vision which helps them spot your toy or mouse wiggling in the corner.

As most people know, cats are also crepuscular, which means they are active at dawn and

dusk. This means they need better night vision. Cat’s eyes have 6 to 8 times more rod cells, which are more sensitive to low light than humans do. This could explain why cats like to sleep during the day…it is a blurry world for them until dusk.

The bottom line “do you see what I see?” doesn’t necessarily have a clear answer. Basically, your

pet sees things differently than you do, and in some cases , especially at night, they see better. But, when it comes down to seeing color, humans have them beat.

Holiday Driving Tipsby Henry Hernandez, State Farm™ Insurance Agent

Henry Hernandez State Farm AgencyFind us on Facebook and let us know what other topics Henry can help you with!

For many of us, the holidays mean more travel, and that means more potential pitfalls in transit. Oftentimes drivers are battling seasonal weather, and what’s more, the increased amount of traffic means fewer resources available to help if you break down.

Here are a few tips to stay safe and keep those holiday plans on track.

•Saynotoholidayeggnog. Never drink and drive, but also be on the lookout for haphazard driving and drivers operating their vehicles under the influence. Unfortunately, the number of accidents and fatalities caused by drinking inevitably rises around the holiday season. You can take other steps to avoid drinking and driving.

•Plan for shorterdays. The more light, the safer the roads. During the winter months, an earlier sunset means you’ve got less daylight to work with. Ideally, plan your trip to avoid driving at night. If you think you’re going to be out after dark, keep these night driving tips in mind.

•Bereadyifyourbatterydies. Cold weather takes its toll on car batteries. Double-check to make sure you’ve got jumper cables in your trunk. You never know when an easy jump-start could save you time and hassle – or when you could use them to help someone else.

•Preparetobestuck. A winter storm can leave you spending your holiday stuck in a drift or stranded in a blizzard, particularly if you’re traveling on unfamiliar roads. Stock your vehicle with other items that might be helpful in case of a problem: thick blankets, extra food and water, coats and jackets, and a flashlight.

Whether it’s the abundance of shopping or thieves channeling the Grinch, holiday season in the United States brings with it increased vehicle break-ins – especially at shopping malls around the country. To make yours a positive holiday shopping experience, be sure to:

•Keepallreceiptsinyourwalletorpurse.Leaving the receipt in the bag makes it difficult for you to prove your purchase, and easy for thieves to return the items for cash.

•Moveyourvehicle toanotherspot in the lot if you opt to drop off purchases to your vehicle at a midpoint in your shopping trip. Onlookers will think that you have left the mall, and your vehicle will be less of a target.

•Makesureyourpurchasesareoutofsight.Keep them in your trunk or covered in the front or back seats.

• Spread your shopping over several days. You are away from your vehicle for a shorter period of time each day, and shopping becomes less stressful.

Shopping Spree

Today in bracelet design, people are mixing fine and vintage pieces with rough metals, blackening agents around stones, and materials like leather and wood. The juxtaposition of the more casual and natural-looking materials create a less formal, everyday look. The stacking of the many designs gives a person the ability to get a different look each day and has an artistic flair as well.

Everyone wants to use their jewelry to make a statement and express their personality in different ways from day to day. The ability to use bracelets as a component part of an overall look makes us all like painters with different colors and designs. Tennis bracelets are just plain lines of diamonds and many people have them and think that they are only dressy. Famous tennis player, Chris Evert, made them sporty and popular for daily wear in the 1980s. Now people seek to stack sterling, leather, solid stone bangles, and vintage designs in addition to blackened almost gothic looking pieces with these to create a modern impression just like a room with furniture from different periods with all the pieces seamlessly flowing.

Many people inherit tennis bracelets from mothers or grandmothers and are not sure how to wear them with their existing pieces. Often the person has all white gold jewelry and inherits a yellow gold tennis bracelet. By stacking this piece with a two-tone or blackened bracelet, it makes a new design that is more reasonable and relevant to the person's existing wardrobe. Something awesome on your wrist says something cool about where you've been and where you're going. So check out the many directions for your own bracelet wardrobe! Many are as low as $200 and create a more earthy or vintage feel paired with the items you already own.
