CAMPSMOUNT NEWS December 2014 01302 700002 www.campsmount.com I would like to start by wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and successful New Year. Our school year in September started with record numbers coming back into our Sixth Form, and our new Year 7 students arrived with great enthusiasm. The long sunny days in September seem a long time ago now as we have packed so much into the Autumn Term. I have received many letters from visitors to Campsmount over the term regarding the students and staff and thought it appropriate to share a couple of examples with you all. ‘Your children are wonderful and are a credit to the school’. ‘The students were great and that is down to you and your staff. The Academy must, in my opinion rate amongst one of the best’. These demonstrate the positive learning atmosphere around the school and indeed a very recent visit by the Department for Education stated that there was a positive picture of learner engagement and that students were pleasant and courteous and very positive about the quality of teaching. Our school values of Pride, Ambition, Community and Responsibility help shape everything we do as a school, and create a learning environment which will challenge our students academically, be socially responsible and be a valued member of our community. As we move into the new year it is clear that we still have some areas to improve, as do most organisations, but we are very much on this exciting journey together. The Presentation Evening and Duke of Edinburgh Awards Evening in November rewarded our students for their hard work and achievements and was very well attended by proud parents and families. The many articles in this edition include students both achieving and enjoying different learning experiences and being part of the community. One of the most enjoyable afternoons was the visit of Askern Spa for their Christmas lunch. This term we had our first Parents’ Forum which gave the opportunity for parents to have a voice as to how we can move forward as a school and I am very grateful for their contribution. We are also launching other new initiatives in the new year including the Edge, Progress Reports and a brand new website. In order to ensure we keep you fully informed about everything happening at Campsmount, please ensure you update your contact details on the Progress Reports. Finally, please enjoy a safe festive period and we look forward to welcoming everyone back in 2015. Mr A Dale, Headteacher NEWS & EVENTS THE BUZZ

I would like to start by wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and successful New Year.

The Presentation Evening and Duke of Edinburgh Awards

Evening in November rewarded our students for their hard work and achievements and was very well attended by proud parents and families.

Christmas Concert

The annual Christmas concert kick started this year’s festive season. Performing for the first time were the Year 9 Ukulele band and Year 7 singers Katie Jones, Harriet Storr and Jodie Fraser. We were also wowed by the school Choir and Orchestra, and bands The Resistance, Trial and Error and Rock Band. Well done to all involved.

Women’s International Football

Our girl footballers were part of footballing history in November, making the very long journey to Wembley to be part of the 55,000 crowd witnessing England's first women's football international to be played at the national stadium. Unfortunately we also witnessed a German victory.

Charity Christmas Concert

Askern Welfare Club

On Friday 12 December, Askern were treated to a range of musical and dancing performances by the students from Campsmount Academy. The evening was organised by Sixth Form students, raising over £400.00 for Cancer Research and the Mitochondrial Research Fund.

Rugby Success

Our Year 10 and Year 11 Rugby teams started this season where they left off last year with convincing victories over local rivals Don Valley.

Diana Award Anti Bullying Ambassadors Day

Campsmount hosted its first Diana Award Anti-Bullying Ambassadors Day. This was attended by our very own Peer Mentors and over 100 students from other schools in our area. The activities of the day were enjoyed by all and it was a great way to promote anti-bullying in school. Our Peer Mentors were then invited to Blackpool for the National Anti-Bullying Conference. They met stars such as Bars and Melody, and participated in fascinating workshops throughout the day, including an 'Apprentice' style competition. This was a fantastic experience for all involved and we hope to enjoy it again next year.

London Trip December 2014

This week our music and drama students experienced the thrills of London's West End. Warhorse and Matilda were the shows on this year's visit. Students also ate at Planet Hollywood, shopped in Covent Garden and Ice Skated in the Winter Wonderland at Hyde Park.

Halloween Bun Sale for Charity

The students taking part in our Health and Social Care and Psychology trip to Budapest put on a ‘Spooktacular’ bake sale. They raised £132.68 which will go towards their visit to an orphanage. The students worked incredibly hard and produced lots of creative treats, that were hugely popular. A special thank you goes to Jodie Walker and Rebecca Clapham who gave up a huge amount of their spare time to help out with the sale, despite being unable to go on the trip.

Visit to Germany

In July this year, 24 students from Year 8, 9 and 10 enjoyed a fantastic four day trip to Cologne in Germany. Phantasialand, Germany’s largest theme park was the trip favourite with the famous Lindt Chocolate Museum a close second. Our students made a beeline for the museum shop after the tour and although most of them bought lovely tasty gifts for family and friends, we are not sure how many made it home! The hotel was beautiful, with a superb view of the river Rhine, made even more spectacular by the glorious weather. A great trip was enjoyed by all!

Girls Football

The girls Year 10 and 11 football team are Doncaster Champions for 2014/15 season. After finishing top of our league in the rounds of games played before half-term we qualified easily for the finals night. On 6th November, we travelled to Balby Carr for the central venue finals and after winning three and drawing one of our games we were crowned champions of Doncaster. The girls played some excellent football and scored some great individual and team goals. We are immensely proud of the girls and their achievement.

Following on from our success we entered Darsey Faulkner in the U14 South Yorkshire Girls Football trials at the end of November. We are pleased to report that Darsey was successful and selected into the 20 player squad to represent South Yorkshire Girl’s Football. We wish her every success in the squad this season.

Netball

All teams have enjoyed success this term, playing against Balby Carr, McAuley and Hall Cross, winning some of their matches. The Year 7 team have been practicing well on a Wednesday night and managed to get off to a winning start against Hall Cross, they have formed a strong team. The Year 8 team are the most consistent at practice and this is certainly paying off with the excellent level of netball they are playing in their fixtures. Both our Year 10 and 11 teams have started this year in the same way they ended the season last year; playing attacking netball to a very high standard and again enjoying success against most of their opponents so far. The Year 7-10 Doncaster Netball Tournaments will take place throughout January and February and will hopefully bring further success for Campsmount!

Year 7 Visit

On 13th November Year 7 students took part in a walk around the local area to St Mary Magdalene's Church in Campsall to learn about the church building, when it was built and the features inside and around the church. The students were shown around and spoken to by the Revd. Dr Richard Walton. He was very inspirational about the stories of the marriage of Robin Hood and Maid Marion and the internal architecture of the church along with the meaning behind the stained glass windows. The experience was very well received by all and very interesting, it brought the topic of community to life for the students.

Zumbathon 2014

A big thanks to all the girls that took part in the sponsored Zumbathon to help raise funds for a new Cheerleading kit. As hard as it was, you all kept going, and with a smile on your face!
