Roméo Dallaire Public School Our Peace, Passion and Purpose Notre paix, passion et Mission December 2014 Volume 4 Principal’s Address du Directeur This past Saturday the SCC hosted the third annual Winter Festival. What a won- derful community event it was. This year we were thrilled to see how many families dropped in and stayed, visiting with neighbors and friends. What a wonderful way to bring November to a close and welcome the month of December. Thank you to the SCC for coordinating this community event. A few weeks ago the Parent Teacher interviews were held. Many of our students participated in Student Led Conferences where they shared their learning and goals with their parents. Student lead conferences are an opportunity for students to take ownership for their learning and is part of our overall focus on Student Self- Regulation. The students did a fabulous job discussing their strengths and self- identified areas of future growth. Last month and this month we have been inviting our parent community into the school for a number of events. Our Grade 3’s hosted a dance presentation that was very well attended, Grade two FI students in Ms. Cooper’s class shared their learn- ing with their families and of course we continue to host our Dragon on Fire Assem- blies where we recognize the many students who exemplify our monthly character trait. December’s character trait is kindness a fitting trait for a month filled with family celebrations and reconnecting with friends. This year we will not be hosting a Seasonal Concert. Just the sheer size of the school does not make it logistically possible. However we are planning a variety of other opportunities to have parents join us throughout the year. As we approach the holiday season we would like to remind all our students that the greatest gifts in the world are not wrapped in paper or tied up with a bow. They are without a doubt the people with whom we get to know and share life. On behalf of the staff, Ms. Pipher-Hogg and myself we wish you a wonderful holiday season filled with joy and happiness and please know we appreciate your ongoing support and encouragement as we work with the greatest gift of all, your children. This year we were thrilled to see how many families dropped in and stayed, visiting with neighbors and friends. What a wonderful way to bring November to a close and welcome the month of December. Snowballs The weather is cooling down fast and with the new cold weather our rainy days will turn to snowy days. Please remind your children that snow is to stay on the ground! Because students can get seriously injured by snow and ice, any student caught throwing snowballs will be sent to the office on the first offense. We are asking parents to please help us by reinforcing this at home!

School Bus Transportation News Durham Student Transporta on Services announced in Spring 2014 that it was upda ng weather cancella ons for Fall 2014. In an effort to be er address inclement weather cancella ons, DSTS has introduced weather zones. DSTS encourages you to review the new zones on our website at www.dsts.on.ca. The four zones are as follows: Zone 1 - Brock Area Zone 2 - Uxbridge Area Zone 3 - Scugog Area Zone 4 - Southern Durham Region Area

Custody and Access Orders If there are any special arrangements for your child of which the school needs to be aware, please ensure that school administration and office personal have an updated copy of court orders for access or custody, signed by an Ontario Court Judge. We must have a copy on file if you wish us to carry out the direction of the stated in the order. The school will continue to provide infor-mation on a child’s progress when requested by a non custodial parent who has legal access. Your prompt attention regarding this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Student Use of Telephones Due to the many demands placed on the phone system in the office, stu-dents are only permitted to use the phones for emergencies. Forgotten homework, gym equipment, team practices, games, rainy or snowy weather and social planning are not considered emergencies. Please remind your child to make necessary arrangements before he/she arrives at school.

LUNCHES Please send your child’s lunch with him/her at 8:10 am in the morning. If you must drop your child’s lunch off, ensure that your child’s name is clearly marked on the lunch bag and place it on the table just inside the front doors. Please make sure you inform your child before school that he/she will need to come to the front of the school to retrieve their lunch at lunch time as we will not be calling students to come and pick up their lunches.

Dress for the Weather...

Brrrr…… it’s getting cold outside!!! As the weather gets colder students are re-minded to dress to be outside for protection from the elements. Wearing a hat, gloves/mittens, and “doing up jackets” are wise choices as the weather changes.

Herizon House Toy Drive

Some of our grade 8 students are working within a DDSB initiative The Heart of Ajax that encour-ages students to be leaders in the school and the community. Our grade 8’s have spent many hours re-searching and planning ways to help and decided that our school can have a large positive impact on Herizon House. Herizon House is a 30 bed Emergency Shelter serving women and their children fleeing abuse and violence in the Durham Region. Herizon House provides crisis counseling for abused women, 24-hour crisis phone counseling for abused women, support programs for resident children, housing and legal support, and referrals and community advocacy. It is a safe, non- judgmental environment for women leaving abusive re-lationships and wishing to live independently of their abusers.

We are asking all students at Romeo Dallaire to donate to our toy drive so we can provide some holi-day spirit to the children residing at Herizon House this December. Toy donations should be new, un-wrapped gifts for boys and girls age 0-16. Donations will be received at the school from Monday December 8 to Friday December 19.

We will also be selling candy canes, 2 for $1 on Tuesday December 9 and Wednesday December 10 where all proceeds will be donated to Herizon House.

Thank you for supporting our student’s initiative and our community.
