Almost 70 years ago in the 1950s, a fashion student named Helen Hutko was one of the first people to proudly graduate from the then newly established Ry-erson. She opened a dressmaking business in Yorkville and later on came back as an instructor at Ryerson. She never missed an alumni event until her death in 2010. As testament to her and her husband Sulo’s affection for the School of Fashion, she stated in her will that there were to be six scholarships for fashion students offered on her behalf.

WHEN GIVING BECOMES RECEIVING

One of this year’s Helen and Sulo Hutko Award winners is Shreya Barath, originally from India. The fourth-year full-time student has been working at the International Student Services as a peer supporter facilitator for three years, where she helps new international students adjust to life in Canada. Having moved to Toronto on her own, Shreya is aware of the challenges of moving to a new country alone with little to no guidance. “The best part of this job is the gratification that comes with knowing that I have helped make someone’s life a little easier,” she said. On top of her studies and her job at ISS, she also spared some time during the past two years to be a mentor at the Tri-Mentoring Program where she gives academic advices to students from the Faculty of Communication and Design.

Shreya testifies how these positions at Ryerson allowed her to encounter people of diverse backgrounds and expose her to various cultures from around the world. Upon receiving this award, Shreya believes the honour “will make the process of learning and consequently contributing, that much easier.” Let’s congratulate Shreya upon winning the well deserved Helen and Sulo Hutko Award!

ATTEND A MIXERMixers, or networking events, are good in various ways. Firstly, you start building your network (for new friends of business) early. Secondly, you grow as a person. You learn how to approach people, how to respond when people approach you, how to keep up a conversation, and you’ll get to learn from other people. Speak to friends, professors, your program office, or Ryerson staff to find out if there are any upcoming events!

MASTER A DISHFrom appetizers, mains, to desserts; from Italian cuisine to Chinese; choose one dish and master it. If you’ve never cooked before, choose something simple and find a great recipe off the Internet. If you cook regularly but always finding yourself eating the same dish, step up your game!

APPLY FOR A SEASONAL JOB Toronto is graced with a lot of stores, along Yonge Street, in the downtown area (particularly the hip Queen St West), or even in malls like Yorkdale and Eaton Centre. Boxing day (Dec. 26th) is probably the busiest day in the retail world so most of these stores are usually hiring and you stand a chance to be hired even if you don’t have previous experience. Just walk in to various stores with a neat résumé and wait for a callback!

WATCH A MUSICALThis holiday season, Jersey Boys, the Tony Award winning musical is back from Dec. 17th to Jan. 4th at the Ed Mirvish Theatre. This one has upbeat songs so unless the warmth in the theatres is just irresistible; don’t worry about falling asleep out of boredom if musicals aren’t your thing.

INVEST IN VINYLSToronto is a haven for Vinyls. From Kensington to Queen St West, you can find various shops selling Vinyls for good deals. Get a record player and build a collection. Look forward to classy nights and surprise yourself how far good quality music can go.

Why not Try Something New

over the holidays!?When was the last time you did something for the first time? If you can’t answer that question yet, make sure you can before the end of the year. Here are some ideas to make your stay in Toronto during the holidays a bit more interesting!
