Above: Arts & Crafts Center managers from U.S. Army garrisons recently gathered at the Arts & Crafts Center at McChord Field to learn how to con-duct Resiliency Through Art at their own centers.
On the final training day, participants practiced “building bridges,” a team-building and problem-solving technique used in the program.Right: Wounded warriors mask-works show how
feelings can be communicated without words. Program participants find that you don’t need to be artistic to produce art, and you see benefits that you can apply to all areas of your life.

Family & MWR offers a multitude of ways to help
Service members and Family members cope with military life. Now, the Arts & Crafts Center also offers an outlet.
Throughout these magazine pages, you can find programs, classes and events to help you stay strong and learn new ways to cope with changes and challenges, whether you’re active duty, reserve, spouse, veteran, retiree or caregiver.
You now can take advantage of a new program — Resiliency Through Art — facilitated by trained staff members at the Arts & Crafts Center at McChord Field.
“I’ve wanted to start this program for a long time,” says Lesley Hill, Arts & Crafts Center manager. “Our trained staff mem-bers are excited to offer this program at JBLM. Participants will find a little oasis
Quotes from program participants:“It’s a great way to relax and take my
mind off of everything.”“I like this program because, even
though it’s mandatory, I can choose what to do at this place.”
“It helps me stay calm and get focused.”
“If someone were to have told me I could create this, I would have never be-lieved them. I get that opportunity here.”
“It’s so relaxing here. I get away from home and focus on myself.”

“Let’s help all the time, not just during crisis prevention.”
Michelle Sterkowicz
here where they can work at their own
pace on a choice of creative projects.”
Adult participants won't need a referral
to attend the facilitated activities, but
many referrals will come from the War-
rior Transition Battalion, Military Family
Life Counselors, New Parent Support
Program, Exceptional Family Member
Program, Servicemember & Family
Assistance Center and Servicemember
& Family Readiness Program.
What Resiliency Through Art helps you achieve
When you attend the program for the
first time, the first thing you’ll learn is
that it’s not art class instruction, nor
art therapy, nor art interpretation for
therapy.
Instead, the program allows you to take
charge of your environment, helping you
to express yourself in ways you never
thought about and succeed in ways that
may surprise you.
The process, not the skills, is the most
important part of the Resiliency Through
Art program. You’re able to use your
imagination, make choices along the way,
let your creative expression flow, open up
and relax.
“It’s a new avenue for healing and
coping with stress,” says trainer Michelle
Sterkowicz, Family & MWR Arts & Crafts
Center USAG Italy supervisory arts spe-
cialist and Italian-certified art therapist.
“A lot of Soldiers and Airmen use sports,
like boxing or running, to let go of stress
and anger. But what if you have an injury
and can’t do that? Many reach for a six-
pack as an alternative way to cope.
“You need healthy outlets. You need
to take time for yourself in order to be a
better person, friend and co-worker. Art is
a naturally relaxing outlet. What we can
do is introduce you to a relaxing way to
engage in art, such as abstract painting or
clay work. There’s no right or wrong way
to do this art, so it helps take your mind
off your stressors. It helps relieve depres-
sion, stress, anxiety, anger — both the
emotional and the physical challenges.”
Sterkowicz says Resiliency Through Art
is not a cure, but even if someone comes
in and they’re not having a good day,
they leave feeling better, with a sense of
accomplishment. Without even know-
ing it, they’ll begin to open up and talk
about their lives. It’s not therapy, but it
can help with the healing process to in-
crease their overall sense of well-being.
And it has far-reaching results that add
to life skills, according to Sterkowicz.
Participants can say, “I didn’t know I had
this in me!” It provides confidence, con-
tributes to self-worth and dispels precon-
ceived notions about what someone can
or cannot do.
“Our Service members and Families are
the ones to choose how they’ll get better —
Resiliency Through Art is a new resource
available to them,” says Sterkowicz.
Finding Resiliency Through Art at the Arts & Crafts Center
Resiliency Through Art is free of charge
to wounded warriors. Other adult par-
ticipants receive the first four times free;
after which they’ll be charged $5 each
time they use the facilitated Resiliency
Through Art room.
The Arts & Crafts Center is accepting
registration for two times: Tuesday morn-
ings from 9:30–11 and Thursday after-
noons from 2–3:30.

gram, call 253-982-6726.

7 ways to flu-proof your workplaceSubmitted by the JBLM Armed Forces Wellness Center
Get your annual flu shot. It can take acouple of weeks to build immunity, so don’t put it off! Add hand-washing reminders to yourwork areas and restrooms and tissues and hand sanitizers to high-traffic areas. Stress the importance of adequate hydra-tion. For example, if your breakroom runs through a lot of coffee, provide alterna-tives such as herbal tea. (Coffee can have a mild dehydrating effect). Bring a water bottle and fill it up throughout the day to stay hydrated. A good rule: If you drink 12 ounces of coffee (or other beverage with caffeine), drink at least 12 ounces of water.Encourage regular, moderate activity/exercise among coworkers for an immune system boost. (Intense exercises, such as high-intensity interval training, can temporarily decrease your immune func-tion, so make sure you have an adequate recovery period between intense exercise
sessions.) Post signs to encourage staff members to move and make healthy decisions (like taking the stairs instead of the elevator or taking a brisk walk on your break instead of sitting in one place). These point-of-decision reminders have been proven to maintain a healthy work environment and encourage activity. Promote healthy sleep habits, good nutrition and stress management by at-tending one of the “Healthy Sleep Habits” classes, “Upping Your Metabolism” class or stress management classes offered at the JBLM Armed Forces Wellness Center, located inside Jensen Family Health & Fitness Center, 2022 Liggett Ave. at Lewis Main. Poor sleep, stress and dietary hab-its can have a negative impact on your immune system. Keep a sense of humor! Humor has beenproven to boost your immune system. If you’re sick … stay home!

making changes to better serve you!AFCS has updated names & operating hours at McChord Field
As JBLM Armed Forces Community
Service continues to evolve as a joint
base resource, we’ve changed the name
of our facilities at McChord Field.
Buildings 551 and 552 Barnes Blvd.
were previously renamed Servicemem-
ber & Family Readiness Center (S&FRC)
and the S&FRC Annex. Those names
were adapted from the original Airman
& Family Readiness Center. To avoid
unnecessary confusion, we’ve simply
renamed these facilities “AFCS—
McChord.” AFCS—McChord houses
several AFCS Family Programs. Call
253-982-2695 for more information.
Bear with us as it will take a while lon-
ger to update signs, websites, brochures
and such!
Additionally, we’ve extended the hours
of Escape Zone, McChord Field’s parent
and child play center. The facility, which
is located at located at 841 Fairway Rd.,
is now open weekdays, 9 a.m.–noon. For
more information, call 253-982-8590/2695.

t’s that time of year again — the holiday season. It can be
a cheerful time full of fun and celebration with Family
and friends, but it can also bring about spending money that
you really don’t have. The average credit card debt per house-
hold is $7,697 as of 2015, according to U.S. Census Bureau, U.S.
Federal Reserve.
You can help keep your holiday spending in check by trying
this tips:
• Develop a budget and stick to it.
• Know your limit.
• Plan ahead — make a shopping list.
• Find deals and know store policies.
• Keep track of all your receipts (this will help you plan for
next year’s holiday budget).
• Open a Christmas Club account with your bank or credit
union.
• Be creative: Bake cookies or cakes for Family and friends.
Enjoy your holiday season by thinking about how grateful
you are to have a loving Family and friends, whether they’re
around you or at a distance. Staying focused with loved ones and
other joys of the season can help you keep stress in perspective.
You can make your holiday season less stressful by:
• Eating healthy.
• Going to the gym or taking long walks.
• Reading a great book.
• Volunteering (i.e., at Santa’s Castle at JBLM). For information
about volunteering, call the JBLM Volunteers Corps Coordi-
nator at 253-967-2324.
There are many ways to get into the holiday spirit without
breaking your budget. Check out your local JBLM community
calendar for free holiday activities and performances such as the
annual holiday tree lighting (details on page 8). Have Family time
‘T I S T H E S E A S O N
and watch a holiday movie, go to the kids’ holiday plays/musical
at school, invite neighbors and friends for a potluck dinner.
Whatever you do this year, it will be great and less stressful.
Follow the tips and you’ll be singing ho–ho–ho!
Make it cheerful, on-budget & stress-free
