Page 2: December 2016 Established 1885 THE MESSENGERbondurantchristianchurch.com/uploads/3/4/8/8/34888384/december_2016.pdf · privilege. The ministry we do here is sacred and I cherish it,

Traditions change, but one thing remains:

Jesus Christ and the hope He brings into the world!

I love holiday traditions because they give me something to look forward to.

Growing up we always had Christmas Eve dinner and bingo with my dad’s extended

family. It was a night I anticipated all year long and it was filled with good food, fun with

cousins, presents, and the best part was that Christmas morning was just a few hours away!

Even among this tradition were traditional bingo presents that came back year after year,

including a pair of red underwear, an Indian statue that had a traveling picture book, and a

plastic red lobster. It was always a surprise who would open these presents which would be

creatively disguised. The best was when the red underwear was hidden in a Jack-in-the-box

and when it was opened the person turned the crank and when jack went “pop” out flew the

red underwear which landed half way across the table. The room erupted into laughter!

Sadly this particular tradition has run its course. Time moves forward as time always does.

Traditions change. And my family no longer has this particular gathering….but Christmas still

remains.

These days Christmas Eve looks a lot different for me. It’s not the quaint family event it once

was. Now I help lead the Christmas Eve service (our biggest service of the year). This year

we’re having 2 services, 5:30 & 7 pm, with a short time of fellowship in-between in Fellowship

Hall. Even though traditions change, Christmas Eve still fills me with an abundance of anticipa-

tion and fun. And instead of celebrating with my extended family, I get to celebrate with an

even more “extended family” in Christ. Instead of the red underwear present we have red,

juicy apples. Instead of Bingo presents (which could be stolen) we have gift bags for the kids

and share in Christmas Eve Communion.

Times and traditions change, but one thing remains constant: Jesus Christ, and the hope,

peace, joy and love he continues to bring into the world. My prayer for you is that you might

experience the hope, peace, joy and love that Jesus brings through your traditions. And if they

change, know that the One whom our holiday traditions honor always remains there for us.

May your family traditions point you towards Christ. Praying that you might find ways to

“prepare the way” for Christ this Christmas season. We have Advent devotionals, Advent by

Candlelight event, weekly services leading up to Christmas Eve, and a special Church School

study.

In Christ’s service and love,

Pastor Jason

Dear BCC Family,

Thank you for all of the kindness you’ve shown me during ministry appreciation month.

The beautiful homemade card (Cindy Tendall), notes, words of appreciation, and generous

gifts have all been a source of encouragement. Serving as your pastor is truly an honor and

privilege. The ministry we do here is sacred and I cherish it, and I cherish each and every

member and friend of BCC. Thanks for sharing the journey of life and faith together!

Clothed in Christ,

Pastor Jason

CONGRATULATIONS!

Congratulations to BCC member

Shari Walling on being named

All-Iowa Girls Swimming Coach

of the year.

THANK YOU PRESCHOOL!

Thank you to the students, families

and teachers of the Bondurant Christian

Church Pre-School for their very generous

donation of 131 canned good items for

the Food Pantry.

The Missions & Outreach Team proud-

ly added this donation to the food items

that were taken to DMARC's Food Pantry

this past week. The canned items you

donated will feed many families and will

be greatly appreciated by those who will

walk away from the dinner table with full

stomachs. Thanks again for your kindness

and generosity.

The Missions & Outreach Team

THANK YOU

FROM WAUKEE CHRISTIAN CHURCH

The 3rd Annual Shoe Drive is back in

the box for another year. Thank you to

the many DOC congregations who helped

make this year’s mission a success. With

your help, we collected nearly 8,000 pairs

of shoes.

The last of the shoes were loaded on

trucks in mid-September and headed to

developing countries. Once they arrive,

they will create inventory for a local

entrepreneur. This isn’t your typical shoe

store, however. These shoes are sold on

the side of road or in small villages and

the income helps to support a family and

boost the economy.

Your generosity makes a big impact.

Thank you! Thank you! And thanks to

Tiff Williams, Assistant Regional Minister,

for organizing the shoe drive with our

summer camps. What a great collabora-

tive mission.

STAFF CHRISTMAS GIFTS

Throughout the year, the Bondurant Christian Church

staff goes above and beyond what is expected to provide

a wonderful and meaningful church experience for our

members. If you are interested in expressing your

appreciation for their efforts, this is the perfect time of

year to do so.

If you give a monetary gift, please feel free to put your

donation in the weekly offering or mail to the church

office no later than December 18th.If you are

giving cash in the weekly offering, please place it in an

envelope, seal, mark “Staff Gifts” on the front, and write

your name on the envelope if you want to receive a tax

deduction. If you write a check, please make it payable

to the "Bondurant Christian Church" and mark “Staff

Gifts” on the memo line. Only contributions marked

"Staff Gifts" will be used for this purpose. It is important

to identify as a staff gift so Stewardship knows how to

record it in the accounting program. If it isn't identified

as a staff gift, it will be placed in the regular offering.

Your gifts are income tax deductible, as are your regular

offering gifts to the church. When Kristin provides

personal taxable income lists in January for everyone

who has given to the BCC in 2016, the amount of your

staff gift will be included.

The BCC staff includes the Pastor, Administrative

Assistant, organist, choir director, Treasurer and custo-

dian. Please take a moment to show your appreciation in

any way you choose. Your generosity will help to make

the holidays merrier for our minister and church staff.

Red Kettle Bell Ringers

What is the red kettle? … In 1891, Salvation Army Captain Joseph McFee was

distraught because so many poor individuals in San Francisco were going hungry.

During the holiday season, he resolved to provide a free Christmas dinner for the

destitute and poverty-stricken. And, so it all began. Each November through Christmas

Eve, volunteers are the difference between the empty kettle and one that raises about

$30 per hour – enough to provide a family with two large bags of groceries or shelter

an individual for a night.

We are “almost” there. Thanks to your willingness to volunteer, nearly all of the sign-

ups are complete! Please take a second look at your calendar to see if you and/or your

family could squeeze an hour or two out of your busy schedules to ring the bell at Brick

Street Market. You will be so glad you did … and you are likely to see friends you

haven’t seen in a while. Presently, the following dates/times are still available:

December 10 10:00 - 11:00 am (1 person, 1/2 shift)

December 14 6:00 – 8:00 pm (1 person)

December 15 6:00 - 8:00 pm (2 people)

Please call Tamara (967-2328) if you can help out for an hour or two. She can add

your name to the sign-up sheet or simply note it yourself on the clipboard located on

the bulletin board in the hallway. We hope we can count on your support!

Birthday Gifts – Home Ministries Children (ages0-12)

Thank you to everyone who continues to shop and drop off presents for the children

at Hope Ministries. You are doing a fabulous job selecting gifts! I dropped off our latest

round of gifts and learned they also have two boys … one age 9 and one age 10.

Please keep this in mind when selecting gifts. I don’t think we have boys in this age

group covered.

I did ask about Christmas gifts for the children and learned they have people from

other organizations who have volunteered to purchase gifts and food for the moms and

children. I was told they will be well taken care of. So pleased to learn this.

As a reminder, birthday gifts need to be “new” and not gently used. Hope Ministries

said it is important for the children to know they are worthy of a “new” gift. Educational

presents are recommended since most are 18 months behind in development of other

children their age due to the environment they came from.

What a month November was! The preschoolers really worked

hard on sharing this past month. Between all of our classes, we

were able to collect 132 cans of soup to donate to the food

pantry! A special thank you to the parents for encouraging their

children to share! And, a special thank you to the church for

delivering these for us!

We will continue our season of giving by collecting items for a few different organiza-

tions this Christmas season! With the generous support of our families, I’m sure this

will be a successful service project as well. If any of you are interested in helping,

please see the “Pajama Drive” note and “ornaments” outside of the preschool door.

All pajamas/items/monetary donations need to be returned to the preschool

(unwrapped) by December 12 (with the “ornament” attached). Thank you!

Christmas is also just around the corner and that brings much excitement to the

preschool! This month we will be focusing on all things Christmas. We have a lot of

exciting art projects planned and books to read. Our Christmas program is scheduled

for December 4 and the preschoolers have really been practicing their songs! They are

really excited!

We, at the preschool, wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

We hope you can all take the time to enjoy the real reason for the season!
