March 2018 President’s Message

Looks like we might have any early spring so time to look at the little thing that become big things if ignored. Fire extinguishers need to be inspected and turned upside down, shaken, as the powder inside tends to compress and compact making them fail. Fishing lines need to be stripped back as a minor abrasion can cause a trophy fish to be lost. Bites sometimes are hard enough to come by so check you hooks and sharpen accordingly. Get your lower units serviced as that last line curled around the prop can wipe out the seals and cause major damage. I’m sure there are lots of little things that should be done and hopefully they do before the early morning get out and get going becomes the call of the day. REMEMBER that you can get great deals at our upcoming Fishermen’s Flea Market on March 10th to replace old line, increase your hook inventory or replace the filet knife that fell overboard.

We still are fighting for our fishing lives with all the regulators and the outcome seems dubious. The regulators seem blind and deaf to our pleas and hopefully they will eventually listen to common sense or maybe go fishing and see what the real world is about. We still haven’t won this battle and now we have a new danger, offshore drilling. Sen Connors, Assemblyman Rumpf and Assemblywoman Gove have requested to join as Co sponsors on companion legislation A-839 and S-258, which would prohibit offshore drilling for oil or natural gas in State waters. Offshore drilling poses far too big a risk for New Jersey’s marine life and coastline. This is the same message conveyed by Florida prior to being granted an exemption by the Federal Government. If Florida’s concerns were deemed justified by the White House, then so should New Jersey’s if there is to be an expectation of fairness and consistency in public policy

New Jersey Fish and Wildlife has announced the Skillful Angler program, which

recognizes “not quite record” size fish, but worthy of recognition like John Howell’s 8-pound Tog.

"THE HAWK" (March 2018)

THE BIRD: We have had a pretty awful January & February, which has not been conducive for a fun day of fishing. I've heard very little this winter from our Snow Birds other than it's been relatively cold and windy. Just think in little more than a week (March 11th) "Daylight Savings Time" begins. SPRING is soon to be SPRUNG!!!

UP-COMMING EVENTS: Annual FLEA MARKET (Saturday March 10th. 9am-2pm) held at the LACEY ELKS CLUB. Bring your friends & neighbors; this is a MAJOR club FUND RAISING event. "PLEASE ATTEND"!! NOTE: Table set up will be Friday night the 9th. If you can help contact committee chair Maurice Schnakenberg @ (917) 558-3620. Your help would be appreciated.

MONTHLY CONTESTS & $25 BONUS:

We had 4 First Place winners for December. The $25 Bonus winner was Jim Schiller with a 1.95 lb. Winter Flounder. The other 3 winners were:

Blackfish 6.45 lbs. Ray Givens Striped Bass 27.4 lbs. Gene Makitra Sea Bass 4.33 lbs. Harry Combs (also Largest Sea Bass of The Year for 2017).

Monthly Contest Forms are within this month's Newsletter & at the March Club Meeting.

FISH BITES: Monthly Contests & Tournament Days START in APRIL, submit your forms as soon as possible after the Fisheries Regulations are available. Our first Tournament Day of the Year is Saturday April 28th

REGULATIONS: We at this time do not have any firm information on Sea Bass & Fluke. We should have some information by mid March. Let's hope that New Jersey is considered it's own Region, separating us from New York & states to the North. New Jersey needs a break especially for our Sea Bass fishery, which has been particularly unfair under Regionalization. Winter flounder & Striped Bass Season OPENS March 1st.!

PARAPROSDOKIANS: Is a figure of speech in which the latter part of a sentence is

unexpected and often times humorous. "I WAS GOING TO WEAR MY CAMOUFLAGE SHIRT TODAY BUT I COULDN'T FIND IT"

"BE SAFE OUT THERE" "THE HAWK"
