Volume 2016 Issue 12

At the beginning of this year, the council met on retreat and came up with 5 goals for 2016. Below is an update: Goal #1 - Focus on unity of congregation in worship planning for 2016.

• 12 times per year educational message on worship: We are so grateful to Linda Dohse and the puppet ministry which help share the gospel message to children at both services on the 4th Sunday of each month. Also Pastor Emily and I have shared information about Holy Communion practices, Confirmation education, differences and similarities of both worship styles, Lent, the Reformation, and Advent.

• Acapella music at both services: We enjoyed this group on 5/29 and for the 12/11 Christmas Music Celebration. • Celebrate rituals (blessings/ commissioning) at both services: On the first Sunday of each month we bless the Eucharistic

Ministry kits that are used to share communion with our homebound. We also recognized council members, those being confirmed and our new members.

• Interchange worship elements while respecting worship styles: During two of our traditional worship services we celebrated communion in the style of the contemporary service. Periodically during some of the contemporary worship services we sang a few more traditional hymns/songs.

Goal #2 - Establish plan for the needed and/or aesthetic enhancement of property. • Front lawn – tree removal: Around the Lenten season was when the two large Oak trees were removed and the front lawn

was cleaned from the debris that was left. • Replacement decision for front lawn: A group from the tree task force and the property ministry combined efforts to contract

with a landscape architect to propose a wonderful welcoming atmosphere. This proposal was accepted by church council. • Identify other property areas which can be improved: All the parking areas on our campus were resurfaced, striped and new

handicap spaces were added. Also considering the replacement of tables and chairs in the fellowship hall.

Goal #3 - Encourage/ Equip/ Engage Disciples to tell the story of the Good News by living the Christian Life. • Teach a track on Christian Life: Several topics were taught throughout the year—Christian

response to mental illness; Stewardship-living a life that counts; The Beatitudes in daily life; Lutheranism 101; Dealing with stress and anxiety; The Advent conspiracy.

• Support activities outside Sunday morning (LMM, WELCA, etc.): ongoing support for small group ministries.

• Preach sermon series: Lenten series of sermons on Wednesdays and Sunday Advent series on Hope, Peace, Joy & Love.

• Help disciples understand Christian Life includes all of life (inside/outside church): this is a continual process.

Goal #4 - Discern needs of our members, community partners, and Spartanburg community and develop recommendations for ministries of St. John’s Lutheran church.

• Identify needs: Unofficially this was done in preparing for goal #5. Also, health ministry continues to keep in touch with many members through home visits and special Eucharistic ministry visits.

• Identify common transitions/ vulnerable periods in life: Unfortunately this was not accomplished during the year, but in preparing goal #5 this will be addressed.

• Recommend how to fulfill the identified needs: Again, this turned out to be an influential part of goal #5.

Goal #5 - Reestablish Long Range Planning committee to develop a Five year strategic plan by the end of 2016. A group gathered together throughout the year and prayerfully identified several wonderful areas to be addressed during the next 5 years. this plan will be presented to church council this month.

I am grateful to the council, staff, and the congregation for working together and seeking God’s guidance to help bring to life many wonderful experiences this year. May God continue to guide and inspire us as we look forward to 2017. Peace, Pastor Mike

2017 Altar Flowers - What’s Changing & What’s Not . . . a flower opens itself to outgrow its plantedness. . . it yearns to be carried away. (Author Unknown) When was the last time someone surprised you with

flowers? When was the last time you did the surprising? Beginning in January, you will have such an opportunity! In December, the 2017 Flower Chart will be posted across from council mailboxes in the hallway outside the church office. Sign up to honor or memorialize family, friends, saints or others. The cost of donating Altar Flowers has not changed in almost 10 years. The price from the florist remains at $45 for two vases. Beginning in 2017, those who sign up to give the altar flower arrangements are to take the flowers after the 11 o’clock service and “surprise” a friend, neighbor, local business or “carry away” the flowers to enjoy themselves. Professionally printed St. John’s enclosure cards will be provided for use with your delivery. Thank you for your partnership to share beautiful flowers throughout our community.

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS!WELCOME NEW MEMBERS!WELCOME NEW MEMBERS!WELCOME NEW MEMBERS!

We were delighted to welcome these new members to our St. John's family on Reformation Sunday.

Tommy, Larrah, & Maelie Quarles Tom and Larrah met at Officer Basic Training at Fort Eustis, VA in September 2004. Larrah was actually born in Spartanburg, but moved when she was 2! Tom hails from Stephenville, TX. His first assignment was Colorado Springs and Larrah's was Busan, South Korea. They were married at Garden of the Gods in Colorado in April 2005. Three days later, Larrah had to return to Korea and Tom deployed to Iraq shortly after. They were newlyweds but separated for 11 months! They have lived and visited various places around the world. Tom has served two tours to Iraq and an additional assignment to Kuwait and also had a two year tour to South Korea. Larrah served for 5 years and did a tour to Iraq as well. Their favorite place to date was Taipei, Taiwan! They loved the sights, food and people. God has grown their marriage

and relationship through the years. They were told they would never have children. We were pleasantly surprised (okay, shocked!) when they discovered they were expecting in 2012. Maelie was born March 2013 and has been their greatest blessing. They were equally surprised to learn that a second child was on the way and due in a few short weeks! Tom & Larrah look forward to raising their children at St John's and are open to where God would like their family to serve. They love the St John community and thank you for welcoming they so openly!

Robert & Melissa Wells Robert comes from Florence, SC, and grew up in the Methodist Church, Melanie grew up in Hickory, NC, and is a life long Lutheran. Her family was very active in Music Ministry. Music is still a love for her as she sings with the SC Bach Choir and serves on their board. She also plays flute and piano. She is finishing her Phd at USC, but finds time to play with her much adored Border Collie min, Oreo, and loves to read and travel. Robert's grandfather was a Methodist minister who baptized he and his brothers. His

parents are retired lawyers. Brian also loves music and plays the piano, composes and arranges music, and music theory. He also loves to read but enjoys the creative art of origami, and … roller coasters!

Bryan, Tara, & Chandler Cohen Brian is originally from San Antonio Texas. With parents, Randy & Noreen Cohen in the military has traveled extensively. Tara is from Long Island, New York. She has a deep love for animals and developed her talent for grooming. She and Brian met when he was in New York attending graduate school. He proposed in from of Mickey Mouse in Disneyworld! Taking the opportunity to own a business, they moved south and operate 4 Paws, LLC, a grooming, boarding, and daycare facility on the west side. Shortly after arriving, they were blessed with a baby boy, Chandler. He now rules their hearts and lives! They look forward to growing their faith and connection with God

and teaching their little son to love and trust in the Lord, as they were brought up to do.

Craig T. Brooks We came to know Craig when Boy Scout Troop 5, along with Cubs Scouts, began meeting here at St. John's. Through the last few years we have grown closer to the Scouts and Craig participating in many Social Ministry projects. We are thrilled that Craig has grown spiritually toward St. John's as well, and we welcome him into our worship family. Craig is married to Jennifer Brooks and has a devoted companion in a handsome Boykin Spaniel named, Tilly. They enjoy hiking and exploring together in our area parks.

Christian Education in Advent will have some great offerings!

Kids Classes Classes for Pre-K through 5th grade are in the hallway below the Fellowship Hall. Our SparkHouse curriculum connects kids with the same stories they’ll hear in worship each week, so that the lessons are more easily learned and remembered. Each class is tailored to its age-level with caring and fun teachers and hands-on learning opportunities.

Confirmation Class for grades 6 through 8 are upstairs, above the staff offices. Pastor Emily will lead this year’s study of the Old Testament and other topics.

High School Students meet in the Youth Room of the Parish Life Center with Corey Carson and Kevin Lageman for discussions about life topics and current videos.

Adult Classes Alpha & Omega, led by Judy Lybrand, meets in L08 (below the sanctuary). This is a thorough and friendly study that walks the whole Bible through chapter by chapter. Fall of 2016 will continue reading through the Psalms. This is an ongoing course that is always welcoming to new participants.

Contemporary Discussions meets in the PLC Senior Room under the aegis of Dick Conn. This lively class seeks to relate current world events to God's Word and enjoys a good conversation and a good cup of coffee. Contemporary Discussions is an ongoing course and there’s always room at the table for one more.

Martin's Table, in the PLC Conference Room, is a multi-generational class is dedicated to providing short-term studies on various topics in the spirit and tradition of teaching, debate, and discussion found at Martin Luther's own table. Many of their sessions this year will be in preparation for 2017’s 500th anniversary of the Reformation. This Advent, Nov. 27-Dec. 28, they’ll be discussing Not a Silent Night, led by Walker Stockley.

Lutheranism 101 will be taught by Pastor Mike in L12, under the sanctuary. This class will cover Lutheran basics, including the essentials of the Lutheran perspective and how it differs from other branches of the Christian tradition. Lutheranism 101 will continue through the Advent season, allowing us to use Luther’s Small Catechism for deeper study.

Living the Christian Life meets in the Downstairs Conference Room, under the sanctuary. This track will rotate by topic and teacher, and seeks to encourage students to think through how their faith impacts their everyday life. Nov. 27-Dec. 18, Doug Kurz and Daryl Jones will lead the class in the Advent Conspiracy, an alternative way of looking at the Advent season and how we celebrate this joyous time.

Please help us continue to grow God's work through the ministries of St. John's by participating in the Growing our Future Capital Campaign.

The Campaign is being established to help fund the landscaping project and other facility needs of the Church.

St. John's began in this location in 1948. Since then , we have had several additions and building projects. As our facilities age and deteriorate, upgrades and replacements are needed. We set aside

reserves to handle most of these items but the front landscaping project, along with future upgrades, would reduce these reserves below an

acceptable level.

The goal of Growing Our Future Capital Campaign is to raise $100,000 by Palm Sunday, on April 9, 2017. Half of this goal would need to be raised by January 1st in order to begin groundbreaking in the spring.

Contributions should be designated in the memo portion of your check or enclosed in a labeled envelope. Thank you for prayerfully offering

your financial resources to help make our physical campus be an inviting and welcoming place for sharing God's love to our neighbors.

Growing Our Future Capital Campaign As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, and established in the

faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. Colossians 2:6-7

Growing Our Future total to date is: $12,608
